Got my first trumpet yesterday at 53, just about to do the first lesson.
Same here - although I'm 62! After 50 years of guitar and double bass playing, I thought I'd have a go at this.
How is it going?
all the best! Hope it is going well for you!:)
I was always told that I have to start as a child to play an instrument so I never even tried. Thank you so much for this video! I think I got three of the notes, and I can’t wait to learn more!
that's the most bs i've ever heard. anyone can play an instrument at any age, those people are complete idiots. don't let that deter you from learning!
Cudos to you, you chose a challenging instrument. How's it going? I started guitar at about 20, piano at about 29, I'm 34 and have started trumpet, trumpet is quite challenging. I know people have that lie in their heads they need to start young, it's a lie. I also play drums and bass, don't intend on stopping learning
@@jarredgraffiti It is going okay- I’ve been playing a very easy version of fly me to the moon. Finding time to practice is hard but whenever I can I try to make the best of it!
@@selinbuyukcengiz6873 ok, well, welldone, I understand about time, but welldone for trying, don't give up. Some things you could try for a season are, wake up a bit earlier and spend time practicing, during your lunch break at work, and in the evening, stay inspired and motivated, watch vids, pray for God to show you a way.. Small gaps etc. Try to be consistent, some time everyday, or every few days, I pray for help for you
Common misconception, I started playing as a kid but there are studies that have shown that you can always develop your brain to read music. By the way that guy reminds me soooooo much of my old band director.
I played in Jr High and was first trumpet. Now I'm retired and need a hobby. Got the g. Bought a used instrument fer 100 dolla. Found a place for lessons. Yeah!
Same here.....good luck to you.
I’m a beginner Trumpet student from south Korea. I just started my first practice with your video. I will study hard. Thank you.
I hope your practice is going really well!!! Wish you luck!!
Thank you, sir, for your instruction. I am 70 years and have been a drummer most of my life. I can pick up my trumpet and get a C pretty much at will. I started trying to use it yesterday. Been interesting for sure and the basement comes in mighty handy. Will keep up the buzzing!!!
I'm a younger drummer trying to dip my toe in a new discipline. Thank you this is encouraging.
@@dontpanic9261 You went through the rudiments and now you are combining your lips, tongue. and fingers to make it go. I am still with it and learn something new every day.
I'm 63 and someone just gave me a trumpet in decent condition. I'm a long time trombone player so that helps a little. One of the hard things will be learning treble clef. It might also be hard to learn the fingering.
Just purchased a trumpet haven’t played in 20+ years. I’m ready to start this journey thanks for this video
Sameeeeee
Thank you!❤ Mr. Howie….. played my first G and C. I have been a guitar player for 50 years. Bought a brilliant 1955 King from a friend who didn’t know to play it. Lol😂. Came home and there you were on RUclips making me feel at ease. You’re so right about the choice. I was going to take flute lessons……
The last year i was in our high school band was 1967. i just purchased a trumpet. Mother could not afford one so i played reed instruments that belonged to the school for 4 years. I'll be 73 on my birthday and was very happy to find your lessons now that I have my trumpet. Thank you Sir.....
I'm buying a trumpet tomorrow! Decision made.. thank you ❤️
I've tried other lessons but yours is by far the most friendly and clearest of them all. It's clear that your experience teaching speaks for it self. Great teacher. Thank you.
Thank goodness you are making content! I am so happy I found your videos! Now I can start practicing trumpet in a way that makes sense.
I'm so glad that I found your channel! that was very helpful! Thank you.
Thank you for these videos. I played Trumpet and I have talked my Grandson into playing. These will be very very helpful in teaching him (the correct way lol).
I played tuba in high school and got pretty good at it. but that was over 25 years ago and I haven't touched one in about 15 years. An old friend from those band days (and accomplished music educator in the time since then, and virtuosic musician throughout his life) passed away last year and I started to realize how much I missed making music. So I bought myself a trumpet, an old Vega Odell I found on ebay for way less than it seems like it should have been priced and now comes the struggle of getting to the point that I can make music out of it. And that's where this video comes in. Thanks for making it.
My son started lessons here in MD last Sunday (once a week). Your videos as a supplement during the week are a Godsend! What he couldn't "get" in class he is getting from your videos. Thank you!
Great video! Going to show this to my future music educators in brass concepts class. You cover all the point i want them to know!
Great teaching back playing my trumpet at 70years old thanks
Thank you! I’m a guitar player on day 1 with my new trumpet. I can do the low note pretty consistently but I’ve only gotten the high accidentally a few times. I’ll be tuning in for more lessons
Adding another huge thank you. As an oldie who just picked back up trumpet and trombone for a show, this video has been invaluable already. Looking forward to more plus all the comments made me smile.
Thank you for the lesson. You are an awesome teacher.
Best intro trumpet lesson I’ve seen yet!
Great lesson Professor! As a sax teacher, I can lean on you to teach the kids who want to play trumpet.
Quick question. Where you teach do you teach only one instrument or half? Sorry if it’s stupid.
My 9 yr old daughter brought home her trumpet for the first time today. We’re a going to check this series out because it seems great!
We just got a trumpet for our 9 year old daughter today! The music store said historically it's the busiest day of the year. 🎺
Thank you so much for posting this. You just got my daughter to begin her trumpet journey. God bless you sir!
Thank you so much for this. I think it's making much more sense and had no idea that the notes would be different from the notes on piano, so this is important to know for sure, so thanks for pointing that out to us newbies, which looks like my kids and I are not alone. Well, we started over six months ago, and got sidetracked and our study and practice got moved from the backburner, to the sink. We are coming back as students, and hope we can progress now knowing what the notes are supposed to sound like. Thanks again.
I started playing trumpet today and I can get a clear ‘G’ in the first few tries, but can also get a low ‘C’ sometimes. Thank you a lot!
4 year trombone player. Always wanted to play trumpet as well, and we managed to get my hands on one. Thank you for this video!
Just subscribed. I grew up playing the French Horn, then the Tuba - yes, I made that switch for Marching Band, and of course the flugel horn and eventually the Trumpet my Jr and Sr year of High school jazz band. I really enjoyed playing the melody instead of Umpa, umpa. I'm sure you know what I'm talking about. Anyway, I'm 45 now and haven't picked up a horn since 95. I can still play scales and such, but want to start over and that's how I found you. Thank you for easing me back into this.
Thank you😊 This was really informative, you seem like a very nice and talented person.
I inherited a trumpet from my great grand father who was a famous jazz musician of the day. I love jazz and want to learn to play it.

Thank you❤ got a trumpet for christmas from my musician dad. I played as a kid but now i have forgotten. Great tutorial
Thank you by the way I went up into the hills to practice and finally got my first note from watching this video
yeah I am a student and I just started about 2-5 days ago and wow!. before and after it is Amazing. and you are not boring or just don't put time into it like most of the people that I know do. you make it fun and it is just cool so keep on doing what you are doing and helping beginners out. I know this helped me so i hope it helps others as much as it did me I love you and you videos.🎺🎶💜💜💙💜💙❣💗💓💗💕
the cat in your pfp is so cute
@@francisthepoet awww tysm yours is to
The perfect first trumpet lesson.
Greatly appreciated JIm
Thanks I'm going to watch the series because I never did beginning band and got put into intermediate band so I'll have to learn from you to catch up
When I started playing cello in middle school, I was put in the high level orchestra bc I could read music and play piano, and omg it was the best thing. Being surrounded by amazing musicians pushed me a lot, and I couldn't play everything, but that situation advanced me so much more than if I'd been in an easy group. It basically defined my high school years. Good luck to you. I hope you have the best time playing in your group!
Thank you for posting this I just got my trumpet yesterday this is so helpful
I am a tuba player, and I decided to learn how to play trumpet to prove to my band director that i am able to play this amazing instrument. Big switch, going from a giant mouthpiece to a small one.
As someone who played trombone, playing trumpet is difficult for me, especially since I have bigger lips. It's hard for me to buzz into the mouth piece at times
I’m a trombone player picking up trumpet on the side so we can have a consistent trumpeter in our band, I understand this completely
Beautiful intro. I love tommy dorsey and glenn miller
It’s been a long long time. Love that song
Im a clarinetist in my highschools marching band and ive wanted to do trumpet, and my brother was a trumpet player and quit band so I was able to get my hands on his trumpet, this will also help me later on because I want to be a band director
Very insightful.
Outstanding instruction. Thanks from an absolute beginner.
Thank you for the tutorial
I'm going onto highschool and planning on switching between 2 Instruments, Clarinet (What I've been playing for the past few years) for Concert Band, and now planning to play Trumpet as well for Marching Band
It's gonna be difficult to play both a Woodwind and a Brass Instrument, but its worth a try, since I've always liked the sound of a Trumpet
Also, thanks for the tutorial being really friendly! It helped out a lot more with that
Thank you for the tutorial!
same thing for the same reason except i'm about to be a senior so i have bit less time 😅 but i wish you the best of luck!
@@Vexinal Thank you!
I just purchased my first trumpet; I'm seriously about learning!
I really like your video i am gonna buy one and i hope at the end of the lessons i can play the note u played in the beginning of the video ❤
Buzzing away! Great first lesson for me at the tender age of 40.
Thanks for the great lesson
Great lesson, thank you!!!!
You helped me practice I’m 4th grade and in band and you help me ❤❤
As a clarinet player who is now attempting to learn the trumpet as well now.... thank for the video.
But also clarinets are and will always be superior
I am also a clarinet attempting to learn trumpet. I have already tried learning saxophone. These tips are really helpful
I also agree that clarinet is always superior
In the last sentence, you spelled saxophone wrong
@@WillPM-hs3wm lmao
Oops
To tysm for the vid I am doing band and the trumpet it helped me learn more again tysm
I don't play trumpet, I play sax. But I might start to try playing it soon, so this will be a good video for me.
Same, I play sax , but my band only has one trumpet player so I might switch to trumpet to help out. Good luck if you do start playing trumpet!
@@holyspirit938 I tried to play it like last year, and it was way to hard, so I quit and now I'm just sticking to playing the sax!!!

Just started playing the trumpet, this is very helpful. :))
Same! I started a few months ago I’m just having trouble with reading my notes
Oh cool! I’m lucky I did piano when I was younger so reading notes is easier :)

The best piece of advice there, thanks😅😅🙏🙏🙏🙏
It's been a long time ❤
welp I'm not exactly sure why I watched considering the fact that I have been playing for a long while but entertaining none the less, nice lesson.
Wow thanks and finally got it right❤😂
Im a clarient but im so fascinated about trumpets I only had ever been a woodwind but I want to try something new!
@@idiot_nerd24 yea idk if I want to commit because I seen people say it messes with your embouchure but if you do let me know how it works!
@@idiot_nerd24 good luck ima wait a year or two because i only been a clarinet for two years 2nd chair rn but I wanna master it before I move on
You got me understanding more about this, but I can't keep consistent note, haha. My trumpet wants to shred apparently. :P
Just for having Okanagan 🇨🇦 on the chalkboard was enough for a 👍
I grew up in Okanogan 🇺🇲 WA not that far away across the border. 😃
I've already learned how to play trhmpet from my mididle school band i was in. Im in 8th grade but o haven't been using my trumpet and i lost rhe skills i had last year when i was in band. Trying to relearn again and be good again :)
I am starting to get interested with learning wind instruments. I tried harmonica, but I want the basic brass sounds. Will buy myself a trumpet soon. New subscriber here!
The weird thing is about my trumpet is that I used to be a blue to play it but suddenly the next day after I got it and blew into it, it just didn’t work. I’m going into 5th grade band and this really helps! (I finally found a video that helps me with playing trumpet!) Thank you so much! ☺️
Hi Maggie. That's great that you were getting sounds - not so great that the next day you weren't. Either your lips weren't vibrating or the air just wouldn't go through your Trumpet. If it's the lips thing, try getting a buzz going in just the mouthpiece before you put it in the instrument. If you can get a good mouthpiece buzz sound but the air won't pass through the Trumpet then my guess is that either there's a valve turned around in its casing or - if you took the valves out - a couple of valves might be in the wrong casing. They're different from each other. If one of your valves is making a clicking sound when you push it down and let it up, try turning the cap (where your fingertip goes) clockwise until it clicks into place, then tighten the cap below that. See if it plays now. If that's not the problem, look at the links below and see if they help. I'll make a note to do a quick video on turned around valves, because that happens to a lot of young players.
Good Luck!
At 17:50 in this video I'm putting valves back in a Trumpet

Excellent video. I am an adult and will finally attempt to play the instrument that I so love to hear. Please let me know where a good source to purchase the instrument in the Washington DC or online area.
I dont have a trumpet rn, but soon I will
I'm a clarinet player thinking of playing the trumpet.
I already play the Bass Clarinet and Tenor Sax as well... so I might as well keep it in the Bb family lmao
My guy sounds like bill murray. Great video 👌👌
Great teacher & sound! Are you playing a Benge 3X Plus? Custom engraved bell?
Oh, that takes me back! My dad, Eric, "Johnny" Rodgers, rest his soul, played violin with the OSO up into his 90's. He died at 97 in 2001. (I saw the notice on the blackboard re. the OSO). I attended many of your performances. Now here am I in my early 80's taking out my old trumpet and looking for tips. Thank you!
Good luck on your journey, and good on you for keeping up music! It's one thing that never goes away and keeps me going in hard times.
TYSM!!!!!!!
Great all i need now is a trumpet
I played in Jr HS 1959-62. Now in my mid '70's. Found my original horn, Getzen Super Deluxe s/n 110813. Was put away in original case and kept in back my clothing closet. Trumpet& case look nearly new. Will get horn professionally serviced to flush inside, sanitize, oil valves, lube slide, cleanup the original Bach 6C mouthpiece.
Is it too late to relearn everything? How to read the notes, finger positions, playing scales, etc etc
Would it be advisable to put some wax or grease between the mouthpiece and the main tube to prevent sticking?
Just start today! See what’s will happen before Christmas
Just watched the documentary of Louis Armstrong. Thinking of picking up the trumpet after 43 years of silence. Father was a music teacher and had his own music store and is an accomplished French hornest and writes music and played with symphonies and college bands and would like to surprise him. I got kicked out of band in eighth grade for changing the music. Often wondered how great I could’ve been . Now at age 57 I would like to see how good I can get with what years I have left.
Thank you. Sir, could you please write me note by note the first song you have played in this video? Many thanks
Hello sir, i'm from south africa, i understood everything clearly, but we dont have band class at school, but i did find my great grandpas old trumpet after my father passed away, i wish to learn this specific one but i can't, since i don't have those extra holes in the center where you slid your thumb and ring finger into, so i don't know what to do, the mouth piece and everything else is the same though
so nice intro
I made the right choice but it's so darn hard T^T. Im stuck to one note "G" Thank you for your lessons, Ive been practicing since yesterday with the embouchure.
I like your explanation. I have a 1960s OLDS cornet. I am a beginner. I cleaned cornet, dried and oiled all valves. Valves are correctly placed. There's no sound. What could it be? Could it still be wet?
Thanks for the instructions, but witch song are u playing in the intro ?
Today I played trumpet🎺practice for republic Day programme in my college
And I realized how difficult it is but teacher told me that I am Improving and I will do better
I'm 51 and played all through elementary to high school.
I'm back baby❤!!
I think I’ll sign up for your course. I just bought a dented Conn B with stuck valves for $20. All good now. I don’t have a lot of time. (66 years old) so I’d like to sign up for the 3 month LOUIS ARMSTRONG course if that’s doable 😁
im 13 tears old and looking forward to doing this
The song at beginning is called “it’s been a long long time” for anyone looking!!
thanks! I found the song now
whats the little snippet that you played in the first clip?
you are good
I agree!
The mouthpiece remover😂😂 my teacher calls it the Medieval torture device. I mean... It looks like a medieval torture device.
I have a question which, in concept, has to do with extending range. However it is not about extending range into top-C and beyond, but rather about getting a very young student to progress from F above bottom C to G. Do you have any suggestions on how to TEACH this please?
I have been playing trumpet for about 45 years and have long since forgotten how I progressed from the first open note to the second. Recently I started teaching a young girl (8 years old) to play the trumpet. I play the trumpet at church each week and this led to the girl asking me to teach her. She can now get fairly decent sounds from C to F but cannot get to the G. I have tried to explain about tightening the muscles in the lips and about changing the position and shape of the tongue but this is all very theoretical and is not getting the success I am hoping for. I have tried getting her to whistle low and high sounds to get her to experience the changes in the lips and tongue, but she is very new to whistling as well and cannot vary her whistling. Do you have any suggestions on how I can get her from F to G?
And if my lips change when changing notes from one octave to another octave, will that be a problem for me to play the trumpet? Or im learning it in a wrong way?
I can’t seem to get notes to buzz on the mouthpiece. I’m familiar with music and vocal tones as I’ve been playing guitar for over a decade, so I wonder if its technique or something.
What song is that that you played in the beginning
