- I found this in my VCR tape collection this morning. Valvano was a talker as you can see here. I'm not sure of the actual date of this appearance other than it is after 1986 (V was AD at NCSU) and before 1990. If anyone knows the exact date, I'd love to know! Sorry about cutting him off a bit at the end, I was a kid when I recorded this and didn't realize it's significance. I'll post more stuff later on garagegabs.com.

Thanks for sharing this. I went to state in 83. I had cancer in 2011 and Valvano's "Don't ever give up" inspired me.

So thankful to have gone to NC State and learn about his legacy.
He lived in Cary, North Carolina while I was growing up in the 1980s. I saw him a few times out in town and he always acted like a nice person.

I am fortunate to say that I was lucky enough to meet Jimmy V at SDF Airport in Louisville when the team came here to play. My friend took our picture, his arm around my waist ( I was in absolute Heaven ) I told JV that he is a brilliant coach and got his autograph, too :) Jimmy did what no one could do and that was out coach every single team they played against. Absolute Brilliance! Rest In Peace Good Man.
Jimmy V always rocked......I worked 2nd shift at the time and always caught the Jimmy V. NC State Wolfpack radio show during my supper break. Jimmy V. was a great guy.
I burst out laughing watching this. Man I wish I knew Jimmy V better than simply watching these clips of him from back in the day.

Spot on commentary. The NCAA chose to make an example of NCSU at that time to discourage other programs. You hear of teams today pulling off MUCH worse with less severe penalties imposed. Quite honestly, the program STILL hasn't recovered.

Well, to be exact, it was because of the book and a local paper. There was an investigation held at NCSU & Valvano was CLEARED of any wrong-doing. The investigator even wrote Valvano himself and told him he'd be comfortable with his own child playing for Valvano.

Who cares what Jim May or May not of done. He lived life to the fullest.

It is a straight up fact that no evidence was ever found that Coach V took any money, changed any grades, altered any drug tests or anything. He didn't have a good graduation rate and some of his kids sold shoes. I don't know where I can find this online, but it is a very well known fact in North Carolina. NCSU was made an example of by the NCAA and the News and Observer's baseless accusations, coupled with this book made Coach V the scapegoat for a situation not half as bad as some think.

Since you took the time to read Golenbock's book, please take the time to read something from the actual investigator.
Not saying the entire book was a lie. However, there are many things in that book that are untrue. The biggest thing I'd debate with you is where you said "Turns out Jim Valvano wasn't the great guy everyone thought he was"- Living in the area and having met the man as well, I'd beg to differ.
Had he lived, I heard a rumor that the New Jersey Nets wanted to hire him as head coach
Buongiorno, I am pretty sure this was broadcast in the summer of 1987, not sure if it was June, July, or August. I still remember this vividly cause Jimmy V mentions Little Italy and NY.
Probably was 1987 because Valvano congratulated Letterman on Indiana, and Indiana had won the national championship in 1987.
RE:rollinsoz007... you're right. the book was pretty much a hatchet job by a couple disgruntled ex-managers and employees of the athletic dept. I've heard UNC had something to do with the book, too, but I hope not. Dean Smith was such a class act, I would hope he would put stop that... but the book says a couple things that are patent lies. they say that nc state ran no set offense. not true. they said charles shackleford didnt brush his teeth? wtf! i've met him. he does. nice guy and good kid.

It's too bad NC State University's Genetics department didn't get some DNA so we could have cloned him and won some more ball games by now!!! LOL... the best coach DURING A GAME that ever was. He motivated players to higher heights than anyone else could have dreamed and The NCAA even had to change a rule because of his strategic genius. His whole career was filled with victories over so-called 'superior' teams. He OWNED COACH K and handed Dean Smith more than a few of his most bitter defeats.

rollinsox007 seems to not quite know what the word 'fact' means. No, it is not a 'straight up fact' that no evidence was found against Valvano. If it were, the program wouldn't have been devastated by the NCAA after investigations. It IS a straight up FACT that Chris Washburn was functionally illiterate, yet 'somehow' got into college with a 470 SAT score. The test starts at 400. And he was hardly the only player ole Jimmy V. made sure got into the school. A good number of players have talked about how much they disliked, even hated, playing for him and the lousy way they treated them. '...didn't have a good graduation rate'?! How about godawful? The guy didn't care, as long as they performed on the court and brought him more glory. Millions of wonderful, honorable have died from that damned heinous disease, but no one put them in front of huge audiences clapping for them. No great honors are given to those veterans who fought for our country, those policemen who protected out communities, those doctors and nurses who fought to save lives were far more worthy than a basketball coach of dubious character.

Just because you cover your tracks well, doesn't mean you weren't complicit in the wrongdoing that occurred. John Wooden didn't start winning titles, didn't even get close in fact, until Sam Gilbert started opening his wallet directly to players, rather than just donating money to the school that wasn't winning while little 'country' schools like UK, UNC, KU were winning. Even SF won two titles, which really ticked ol' Sam off. Players have admitted to get money for clothes, expensive meals at top restaurants, apartment rent, cars and even at least one abortion for a girlfriend while the NCAA turned a blind eye. No serious investigation went on until well after Wooden had retired and was safe.
It was for the same junk every program in the ACC was doing! LOL... what happened to Jimmy V was, first, he was an enigmatic person. Second, he recruited some players with very poor character. Third, a money-grubbing 'journalist' saw a chance to make money off his fame and, last, NC State's 'owners' did not have the guts to take their own medicine when they could just SCAPEGOAT Jimmy V and ruin the program. LOL... The offenses were free tickets and shoes! LOL... Hmmm, who would OK that?
I gotta be honest: this kind of Italian bothers me a bit. He's loud. But not all Italians are like that. Southern Italians are like that, with that paisan stuff. I'm from Northern Italy and we don't much care for Southern Italians, but I just want to point out that to call this guy a typical Italian, "ugly and arrogant", is an offense to those many Italians who aren't loud and overbearing like this guy. If I said, "Those typical loud, fucking drunk micks", would you like it?
