Rad Rat would have been picked on at the skatepark in the 80’s...
This guy would review a John Lee Hooker or B B King record by pointing out that it's just pretty standard average 12 bar blues with a bit of singing.
His part in Flip's Extremely Sorry video is worth a watch. I think he was mid 40s when they filmed it and he kills it in that pool (hippie jump over the pool ladder was sick).

I’ll be 32 in May. Since 2017 I made it a point to skate AT LEAST once every 2 weeks. Depending on the weather I probably will skate twice a week. Even if it’s cold. 60% of our park is under a bridge so that is doable. Not to mention I have a skate bench to take into parking garages. Honestly I hurt all night long after a sesh... but this is the best I’ve ever been in my life. My muscle memory is razor sharp. My skate sessions are quite medicinal. Keep with it Mr. Rat. Even if it mean just doing some primo flips on your living room.
I like Lance because he was honest and he became a star for just being goofy I like that he said skating can't be all about being good it is just playing around and why not some of us will never be great but skate anyway because it's fun and it's just who we are
One thing I'd add to this is his work on Lords of Dogtown, where he shot a lot of the pool footage. While skating the pool with a handheld. On film stock, so we're talking quite heavy equipment. If you look at the way the scenes cut, the Lance shots really make these sequences go beyond what you generally have in skate video, so there's a bit of irony in that to make skate footage get that Hollywood sheen, you hire Lance Mountain to operate a camera...

He worked a union job for years. Even during the early bones brigade days. He was a father and married. You kinda made it sound like he never worked or had a real job.
Agreed i remember a specific scene where all the team members were modifying a car and lance just grabbed a saw and got to chopping while everyone else just hyped him up. I kinda figured he was the only one who knew what to do with power tools

I think Lance addresses how terrible he’s acted in the Bones Brigade documentary. He comes down pretty hard on himself.
I say that because in 1989, I got a hold of his number and called it.
I asked for Lance and the next voice was unmistakable; it was him.
He spoke to a random kid/fan on the phone for more than that kid deserved.
I told him that story when I met him, about 3 years ago. He was a class act.

Lance Mountain is without a doubt the most humble and friendly pro I've ever "met". I was at the "Extremely Sorry" premiere in Cologne, Germany, and as young and tone-deaf as I was, I went to him after the flick to ask for an autograph. Now I know that a "Thanks for your contribution to skateboarding" and a respectful handshake is worth so much more, but nevertheless, he signed both halves of my ticket (I gave the other one to my brother as a gift; he even wrote "To Alex" (my brothers name) on it). He couldn't have been more respectful of my adolescent behaviour. I still have that ticket framed in my living room and I cherish it for that experience. He is one of the dudes that gets how crazy it is for young idiots to meet their idols and fan out.
I've heard similar stories about Mike Vallely, by the way.

i saw Mountain skate many times in the early-mid 80s. he was always giving it his best and was always a stand up guy, and yet never stopped reminding us younger skaters what skateboarding is all about, having fun. i apologize but, the picture you paint about Mountain and skateboarding 70s-80s is not the one that i experienced. we were punks, outcasts, loners....nobody skated in the early 80s. I think it was John Lucero who said it best that 90% of the skaters today would not have been skaters during the late 70s-early 80s.

I agree. I started in the mid 80s and still skate. Mountain's a legend and already was when I started in 5th grade... Making it sound like he actually shot someone in the face is pretty lame too and speaks to how these younger kids grew up/are growing up. He said in beginning not the quote that it was hot and he was shooting cold water at people. I wasn't there, but sounds like the ice was a surprise. He meant to shoot him with water. Taping an 8 yr old up sounds harsh, I admit it is, but in the 80s n 90s younger skaters got fkd with by older skaters and then the younger dude's passed it on. When I was one of the lil dude's, I of course got messed with. I've always been a smart ass and didn't take shit, so the older dude's I skated with picked up on that and I got respect much earlier than some other kids who skated much better. It was a punk kinda thing to skate, at least outside Pittsburgh. We were the "bad" kids, so ya getting bullied was a part, but it made you tough. No one my age was asking for safe spaces in college. Maybe cause minor bullying gav us backbones. I have kids now, I never liked bullying when I was a kid. It was what it was tho. No one cried out for justice, haha... millennials are so soft. Glad you skate tho

Started in the late 80ies, and it was also a lot rougher back then still. And there were like 50 people skating in the whole city, Nowadays you have like 50 people hanging out in one spot.
I know he's just a kid, but he jumped from the Bones Brigade Video Show straight to Animal Chin--that right there shows the limit of his knowledge of those days. I don't know about the rest of you guys, but Future Primitive got way more heavier rotation in my VCR than Animal Chin! Not only did Lance kill that Future Primitive backyard pool scene (back-to-back backside airs, fully extended sad plant!) and hold his own pretty well in the New York street scene (bean plant at the big Banks?), but Lance's Ramp Jam is classic!
Rad Rat should definitely be hotter in the skate world, dude does excellent bios, like a Skate historian.

Totally agree. I'm 48 and have been skating since 83', 35 years or so. Watched Lance and the Bones Brigade blow up as I skated in high school. Went to highschool with legends Chris Livingston and David "Shaggy" Palmer. Also skated weekly with Randy Colvin and other AZ legends in PHX and Tempe. I feel blessed to have grown up during the early 80's/90's in the skateboarding Era discussed in this video. The historical accuracy was completely compelling and real. Not sugarcoated or fanboyed out to make Lance some kind of skate good guy. He was a skate punk who grew up like we all did. At some point in everyone's life we realize hurting people ain't cool, and so we change. Just like Lance did. A great role model, scars, imperfections, and all. Good work brother.

I think he faces the same problem as other RUclips skaters, but specifically like Andy schrock. He doesn't give off a 'skate' vibe. I think it's lame but it's the same reason certain people end up being pros even if they aren't the best. It's usually look, style, charisma type stuff. He is like very down to earth 'i do my stuff, hope you like it's type of guy plus it's on RUclips. There's less typical skateboarding content than other channels

It's always funny to hear people attempt to describe or explain something that they wern't a part of and only know about from what they learned secondhand. Nothing that I saw in this guy's attempt is accurate... For anyone that wants to know... the best thing about skateboarding in the 80's is that THERE WASNT PEOPLE POSTING VIDEOS TRYING TO EXPLAIN SOMETHING FROM THE PAST. This guy doesnt know shit
A couple of years ago I was in Lake Tahoe helping move my brother into college, I was skating back to my hotel from the skate park and right as I pulled in to the parking lot I heard some dude yelling at me. He ran down from his balcony and gave me a whole buck of stickers and I look at him and said “wait are you lance Mountain?” He said “YEAH, I didn’t think somebody your age would know who I am” (I was 15 at the time)
So he has no mob connections then. And he knows & has admitted how bad he acted back in the day. Lance is a good dude. The 70’s & 80’s were very different. Better in some ways, worse in others.
He can probably still skate because he skates transition. My theory is that it is easier on the joints and less likely to screw you up long-term. It will be interesting to see where the high impact street skaters of today will be in 10 years.
Dreamworld Isolation slamming from 15 feet in the air is still pretty hard on your joints...

That first street part also made people realize they dont need to be pro to have fun on a board. So it got more new or non skaters that were interested in skateing to realize u dont need to be tony hawk to skate.
People had to have started skating switch a lot before lots of new tricks started being invented. It just makes sense that people would be like "shit I'm gonna try it standing the wrong way" haha.

I enjoyed his skating immensely but in the 90's his creation of 411 video magazine was paramount.For us young skaters 411 was a window to the skate world!
All I had back in '89-'91 when I first started skating was "Ban This" and "Public Domain". Lance always seemed to be the comic relief of the Brigade, but I learned an couple of grab- or curb-type tricks from watching those tapes over and over...

Don’t like the title of this video don’t like the host or his interpretation of skating from 70’s 80’s and 90’s - I skated 80’s and 90’s and lance was an incredible skater and completely inspiring. If you’d had the chance to see him skate in person you’d know what I’m saying.

Lance strikes me as a really nice and mature guy now, he talks in the Powell doc about how butter and jealous he was of guys like Tony who were progressing way faster than him, but I think he has matured a lot since then. The really sorry part is well worth a watch. We used the word Gay like that and im about your age. I wouldn’t do it now but different times, i think we can let it slide!
The religion thing kinda annoys me too in him and Hosoi’s interviews but hey it works for them so whatevs.

Even tho the skating in BBVS "sucks", it should be noted that any skater that had access to a VCR or Betamax identified deeply with Lance because the goofy street style he displayed was more attainable than vert tricks or Rodney. the erasure of Future Primitive pains me. The trick quality between the two Vids was vast, especially considering they were released just a year apart from each other. In addition, Stacy Peralta really used Lance's personality to sell the Bones Brigade image. I think he shined the most in those videos even tho he wasn't better than Hawk or Cab, who come across a bit shy. Also, looking back, i think everyone was a dick in the 80s!
Great video. Growing up my friend was Lance and I was Cab. Everyone stopped skating in 1992 lol. I started skating again a few years ago and I'm learning new tricks and better now than I ever was as a kid. You can check out the progression on my channel. Keep up the good work.

Imo the really important thing about Lance's part in the video show is that it LOOKED kinda easy, especially compared to all the very and tech in that video. Mike valley said 'i saw that and thought that I could actually do those things, and that's really helped'

I'm 36, and after about an 8 year break got back into actually skateboarding again about 1.5 years ago. It hurts more, and my body can't keep up with everything like it used to, but it feels more rewarding now and I think I have caught up to how good I was back in my early 20s. I just don't do as many gaps now.
@John Doe about the same honestly. In my mind, my joints are already damaged from doing tons of stuff when I was younger and I will have pain regardless. May as well continue with something I love, just be smarter about it.
Still skating 3 to 4 times a week. Find myself landing stuff j never did before, but I'm focusing more on tech and clean stuff rather than fast or big. Still incredibly rewarding.

Man Lance was one of my fave skaters. I even met him and talked to him in Melbourne back in the late 80s. I was a vert skater and trying to get back into it cos my son has just started skating. It’s pretty hard tho as both my knees are abso,utely trashed and I’m waiting on surgery. But hey as a 44yr old-skaterz neva die.

The self-proclaimed "Rad Rat" produces yet another cringe inducing documentary. Once again, going into one of his videos with an open mind, I am appalled by the lack of reverence he shows for skateboarding's heroes and royalty. That's just it, he doesn't like their skating, and the lack of stoke he feels in both research and development can be felt throughout his presentations in entirety. Instead of exploring why people love these skaters, he thumbs through their archives looking for every little thing the skater has done wrong, even holding their child-aged actions of the 1970s to the political correct scrutiny of 2019. Lance Mountain is one of the most loved in the industry, an industry that self-regulates and ostracizes those worthy of exile through bad behavior. Lance has never even blipped on the radar of of being black-listed and it's pretty rich hearing from a "freestyle" skater in the year 2019 nonetheless, that he's a hypocrite. An actual hypocrite. Then, you act as skating wasn't unexplored territory, as if he could possibly have known he could have had a career into his older age (yet he pulled it off). You accuse him of shooting someone, yet is was a watergun fight, with an accidental outcome. Judging by your disposition, you must not have been in very many water gun fights as a kid. You say the FBI will arrest you for hate speech for saying gay twist, yet you still spell it on the screen, achieving the same result, just to project yourself as being morally superior. You don't mention his relationship with Neil Blender, discovery of Mike V, loyalty to Stacy Peralta, being groomed for taking over as TM of PP, his mission to learn the five, his contributions to 411, his strict immigrant family upbringing, working in factories to provide for his son while being pro; none of his trials and tribulations, yet you can plug your tight truck skate sessions "tricks and tribulations". Lance brought skating to the neighborhoods for children such as Shepard Fairey and others who were introduced to skating through the BBVS, you say his tricks were lame, well how about acid dropping off of a roof? The skit was meant to portray a one and done run through the sidewalks of anywhere America, not some super tech bangers, rather to express the fun one can have on a skateboard, as envisioned behind the lens of Stacy Peralta who brought skating to living rooms in all 50 states through his visionary videos. You should be ashamed to disgrace the legacy of Lance Mtn. He's a true soul who did it all just because he loves to skate. His contributions to skateboarding's industry are immeasurable. You should give credit where credit is due. If you're not stoked on them, then why make a video on them? My advice would be to do something your heart's in. Because that's what skateboarding is all about.

When we watched those early Powell videos as kids in the 80s, Lances street section in the Video Show was mindblowing as it was the first street section on a video. Plus, it was relatable. It'd be hard to imagine now, but these guys didn't exist in our reality as far as most skaters were concerned. You had no access to them asides from magazines and copies of copies of VHS's and to see a 'pro' just ripping around the streets goofing off like we did was huge.

All the hijinks were standard back in the day. Street skating hadn't developed fully and the majority of America didn't have parks, ramps and pools to skate. No Internet and lots of dead time meant loitering and causing trouble were part of the life of a skater which resulted in being chased off and conflicts with authority resulting in the 'skateboarding is not a crime' meme.

for me its so crazy to hear people had no idea about street skating back then. when I grew up and fisrt started skating(90s in Austria), all we knew about skateboarding was derived from two random sub par videos somebody at school had. We got constantly in trouble with police/parents for leaving marks on stairs and stuff in the streets and campainged for a place that we would be allowed to skate in. just as the city finally built a (comparatively shitty minimal) skate"place".. I grasped the concept of a skatepark, I had no idea these things existed.
