The American commentators were sure critical towards Malinina. I bet they'd not mention any real or farfetched deficiencies if she was American. 😂

At that point, Malinina didn't really have much to show for her skating besides her surprise top 10 in Nagano. She hadn't yet been top 10 in the World Championships and didn't particularly have a good skate here. It wasn't until later at NHK where she won and then started the streak of wins leading up to her 4th place at Worlds.
