An interesting day out! Around 5:05, the line via Westbury is actually officially called the “Westbury Line” from Reading Southcote Jc (not the main line, which is via Bath then Bristol). It joins the Main Line at Cogload Junction before Taunton, so you were on the Westbury as far as Castle Cary.

@@AymanTravelTransport blimey yes. Day return from Blackburn would hardly leave you enough time to eat an ice cream on the front! Thanks for watching 👍
@JohnnyHooverTravels yup, pricing isn't an issue due to split ticketing, but the real problem is the timing. Earliest train I can get from my local station gets me into Preston on time for the 0718 Avanti service to Birmingham, which would connect me to the 0930 XC service to Gloucester, which gets me there with ample time to catch the 1104 GWR service directly to Weymouth. However, I'd arrive at 2pm and barely have an hour to spend in Weymouth before have to go back to Gloucester on the 1500 train. Provided the next train to Birmingham upon arriving into Gloucester is not cancelled, even then I'd arrive in New Street long after the last train to Preston (1907) already went and the only possible way to Blackburn thereafter is via Manchester, which I would arrive at 2230 at the earliest, and likely get to Blackburn just before midnight. Long day just for an hour in Weymouth is definitely not worth it. Plus, if even one train was cancelled, I'd be snookered! Likewise, if that train getting into Weymouth was delayed, I actually wouldn't have much time to see Weymouth anyway. Thus, I might as well just bite the bullet and get a hotel somewhere like Bristol.

Thanks too for watching 👍
A beautiful line and one I used to travel on regularly as a child in the late 1960s joining at Maiden Newton after coming from Toller on the connecting Bridport branch. In those days if you were unlucky you got a three car DMU, but as a young boy the sight of a Hymek (a real train) arriving with a consist to take you either North or South made your day. Was it that slow back then?
@@truebrit3578 crikey, getting a Hymek! What a treat! And what lovely memories ❤️
Thanks so much for watching 👍
I did this trip on a Class 158 a few weeks ago & it was grueling, every single stop from Weymouth to Bristol TM took about 3 hours for 100 miles due to a wait for an on-coming train on a single line track for 25 mins. Never again.
@@mt5144 sounds miserable. Pleased my run was blessed with a better day!

Great JH
@@kevincollis2632 thanks! 👍
Like Weymouth but will you follow the old line to Weymouth harbour/ quay ?
Let's "Sea "
@@user-eg8pv2om7j you know i will 😉
Video comes out tomorrow (Sunday). So not quite a Monday Bonus this time!
Thanks for watching this one 👍
Bring back the S&D.
@@rogerphelps9939 haha! I'm not so sure, given it used to stand for "Slow & Dirty" back in the day! 😀
Thanks for watching 👍
Some of it, at least, is a cycle path - with the longest cycle tunnel in Europe as you come out of Bath.
@@wessexdruid7598 oh. That's interesting ! 👍
@wessexdruid7598 the viaduct at Midford still stands too, rather infamous from the introduction scene in 'The Titfield Thunderbolt'. It probably also had the smallest platform on the line
4:00 I don’t overhead lines at Bath would be in keeping with the historical history of the City to be honest.
@@christheDevoniantrucker i think it would be ok. I mean they have overhead power lines throughout Europe and nobody bats an eyelid 🤷♂️
Thanks so much for watching 👍
Perhaps the Hitachi trains can run on diesel power between Sydney Gardens and Oldfield Park , avoiding the need for overhead wires in that section of the route
Do these trains have Guards ? I bet they are hemorrhaging on lost fares especially when they stop at unstaffed pay on board stations !
@@Sam_Green____4114 they certainly do. I had my ticket checked, as did many others!
Thanks for watching 👍
No. They are an honest lot in this part of the world.
@@rogerphelps9939 How ? if there's no one on the train to give the money to where will they pay ? I experienced this travelling in Germany ! No ticket machines ,no ticket offices open ,no staff to even give the money to ! Even when people wanted to pay !
This is one of the routes the High speed billions should have improved instead. 30mph!
@@WoodWedgie haha! Can we not have both?
