- My first time crossing the English Channel on DFDS from Newhaven to Dieppe. With the sea calm and the sun shining, I think this is going to be a great way to start a series of adventures on the trains of Europe with my 1st Class Interrail pass... but the trains are for another day. For now, let's cruise across "Lan Manche".

Nice video and beautifull ferry on route from Newhaven to Dieppe . Very good !
Thanks! And thanks for watching 👍
That was a charming report, thank you; we always enjoy your beautifully filmed videos and ever cheerful demeanour. Wishing you a jolly Winter Solstice (22nd Dec.) and Merry Christmas!
Thank you! Couldn't help but smile on such a lovely day 😀
Merry christmas and Solstice to you and yours too 🍺
Did this crossing last year, fair review. There is something very special about watching the coast appear over the horizon, beats air travel every time
Yes, I agree. It is very evocative.
Thanks for watching 👍
Another good video of the ferry, looks clean and fresh, look how smooth the sea is,a good bargain price journey,
Yes it was a good price and I have never been in a calmer sea!
Thanks for watching 👍
Under Armour can be a life saver! As Canadians, when we hear Dieppe we think of the Pre-D-Day landings in 1942 and the terrible losses suffered in Operation Jubilee. It would be the bloodiest day for Canadian soldiers in the entire war. Just a bit of history.
Yes, I wear it under my uniform on very cold American football games too!
I did walk along the sea front after i'd checked in to pay my respects at all the memorials along the beach to the Canadians (and many more). Poignant memories.
That’s lovely that you did that. It might feel a bit odd, I think, arriving at locations that were the sites of major battles, seeing them as they are now but knowing what they were.
On a happier note, wishing you and your family a very merry Christmas! Thanks as always for taking us along on your journeys. We always enjoy them.
Pleasant to see you outside UK
Little depressed to see so few cars and passengers 😢
I think the route might be closed down
Love your low-key style. Enjoyable videos that are quite well done.
That is lovely of you to say. Thank you 👍
And thank you too for watching 👍
Thanks for compiling this trip report Johnny. I had forgotten this route still existed (let alone that it would take foot passengers) seeing as so much coverage nowadays is given to Dover.
It is a sneaky quiet little back door out of the country for sure!
Thanks for watching 👍
Very interesting video! Great work! 🤩👍🏼 My godfather lives in Seaford. It is a beautiful region! It is always great to observe the ships from the sea shore. Just subscribed!
@@matthiashaenni thanks. Much appreciated ... and thanks for watching 👍
Cracking video Johnny! hope you enjoy your interrailing - I did it in the Summer in Benelux and it was amazing, got to see so many places I wouldn't ever see if I didn't go by train.
Yes, I had a great time as you'll see in the coming weeks! Thanks for the support and do keep making your own excellent stuff too 👍
Lovely video as usual, but I would just mention that a ferry built in 2006 is not old and there are many out there much older. May need a refit internally but that’s all.
Ah yes. That's a very fair point.
Thanks for watching 👍
really enjoy your videos keep up the inspiring travel vlogs!
Thank you that is so kind of you. If you keep watching them, I'll keep making them! Thanks for watching this one 👍
Great ferry route have used it four times this year love dieppe
Yes, i too enjoyed the route and my evening in Dieppe.
Enjoyed this mate. Been meaning to do this myself. Looks a bit old school but that’s the way I like them 👍
Haha yes! I think you and me both.
Merry Christmas 👍
I caught the Cote D'Albatre in December 2022 from Newhaven to Dieppe and returned on the same boat 8 days later. Thanks for sharing, I took a car so had no idea what the accommodations were like for foot passengers, our car wasn't searched and we had a quick passport check in a booth (sort of like a toll booth) at ether side before being free to go. Much more pleasant way to travel with a baby compared to flying.
Yes. Definitely the way to go with a baby along 👍
Great stuff. The ferry looked like it was from a slightly bygone ago of car ferry travel. I thought she looked fantastic.
Yes, definitely felt a little old, but it was quite adequate for the job it was doing for sure.
Best wishes to you and Mrs Travels for Christmas 👍
Thanks for the vlog. A few years ago when the old terminal was open Stenna also operated from there. In the summer they had a sailing at 4am so you could see the sun coming up as you crossed. Arrive at 09.30 into the the main basin ( now the marina) and have a day out in Dieppe. A lunch of moules et frittes with a glass of local cider and a relaxing afternoon. Then catch the 6pm sailing and be back for 9.30. A wonderful day out. Sadly the timetable doesn't allow that now.
Well that sounds like a fun, if very long, day out!
Thanks for the kind words and for watching 👍
Nice review. Would welcome a new review with the two ships having seemingly been renovated over winter 2023/2024!
Oh I will bear that in mind. I do need to cross the channel again sometime soon !
And thanks for watching too 👍
Very interesting video again Johnny, I’m so pleased I subscribed to your channel, I did this crossing quite a few years ago now and although longer than the Dover to Calais route, I think it’s good to have more time to relax and just enjoy the journey as you obviously did. I really enjoy your videos as it’s good to see all your varied and well documented journeys in the UK, and as I have been living abroad for some time now your channel brings back so many good memories.
Thank you for for so many kind words. I hope you enjoy the European travels that are coming up... but I will ensure I keep some UK ones mixed in too 👍
I did this crossing Friday night 31st May 2024, was 5 hours 😮
I hope it was a good crossing nevertheless.
Thanks for watching 👍
Unless it was delayed it is four hours + 1 hour time change so only 4 hours of actual sea time
I do like going on a Ferry. I’ve been on the Ferry from Dover to Calais and from Harwich to Port of Holland.
Yes, I love them too. I do think ferries to France and the Netherlands may be my go-to routes from now on. It is so difficult to get onto Eurostar unless you book so far into the future (unless you are very rich!)
Years ago the ferry docked next to the town centre
@@korma9732 Yes, ferries have got bigger and also passengers have more and more arrived in vehicles... hence they shift the dock!
Thanks for watching 👍
Love your videos Johnny and already looking forward to your continuing French adventure. I often have holidays in your part of the world and wonder if you might be able to put a video together about IKB’s Atmospheric Railway. I know there’s precious little left but with your local knowledge you might be able to take us through the story…..great work, keep it up! 👍😃
Thanks for the kind words and for watching in 2023. I will think about the atmospheric railway, but as you say, there's not much left to see.
@@JohnnyHooverTravels that’s all I can ask….have a great Christmas. 🥂😃
ive been on the ferry with my dad and my older brother before last summer i took the midnight crossing to Dieppe from Newhaven i had tasty food on the ferry and i got sweets and chocolate in the gift shop i wish you could get something from the gift shop to keep you going
Pleased you had a good trip! Thanks for watching 👍
For that size of ferry I'm surprised there isn't a seperate passenger gangway.
I suppose they are also limited by their very tight port facilities.
Thanks for watching 👍
I remember as a child various trips as a foot passenger with my parents between Holyhead and Dun Laoghaire . Access to and from the ship for us was by the gang plank. I get the impression it's common practice now for foot passengers to board/alight via the vehicle deck.
Thanks for this. I'm going over in July on this route with the car for 5 days at the bargain price of £ 91 when the 20% over 60's discount is applied. You have to ring to get that, not available on line.
Thanks. Couple of people have mentioned that to me. As an over 60 I will definitely be calling to claim the discount next time!
Thanks for watching 👍
Merry Christmas
Merry Christmas to you too 👍
This is a fantastic alternative route to Dover, shame to see it so empty out of season. Ironic that the sea was calmer in December than in July when we used the service.
Haha yea. Just the luck of the draw with the weather!
Thanks for watching 👍
What absolute perfect winter day to go sailing. Was absolutely gob smacked how cheap it was. To compare it costs me £35 to get a train from Inverness to Aberdeen.. seemed a little strange they hadn’t changed the branding from the original owners. Yes it was looking its age in places, but at that price..
Definitely a "bargain cruise" for sure. Merry Christmas. Thanks for the support in 2023 👍
Brilliant video as always!! Such a smooth crossing across the Channel. Is there free meals on this route like the other dfds routes from Dover? Sometimes the older ships are better than some of the new modern ships.
Wishing you all the best, a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!!
Hope all is well, take care
Merry Christmas to you too. Thanks for watching this year! And no, there wasn't free food, but it wasn't overpriced.
Better when Dieppe Maritime and Newhaven Marine stations were open allowing a cross platform transfer between train and tub.
Yes, I do agree. Never as much fun getting bussed onto the ferry.
I am seriously surprised this ferry route is still running. I mean, how cost effective can it be?
@@Truthseeker1515 i see your point. But it does get very busy in the summer, so I understand.
Thanks so much for watching 👍
It isn’t always. I’ve been on it twice in the past 6 months and both times it was full.
Thank you for this video, very informative. I’m travelling on this journey in October having never been on a ferry before for my fishing trip. Can’t wait!
@@rhysbenneyworth347 hope you don't try to fish off the side of the ferry 🤣
Thanks for the kind words, and thank you too for watching the video. Have a great trip! 👍
Massively efficient service and a somewhat neglected route. Been using it for years since the Portsmouth to Le Havre route closed.
I suspect they must make most of their cash from haulage.
I enjoyed the trip and will likely use them again! Yes, it does feel like it is a back door between the UK and France!
Thanks for watching 👍
We did the 0530 crossing to France a few days ago. I would not recommend it! Yes it meant we started with a full day in France but unless you are good at sleeping you are pretty much up for 36 hours. Overall it is a good journey but the coffee on board is pretty bad.
@@gordonm2821 oh yes, the coffee. Not great...
Thanks for watching 👍
Not sure if it goes to Newhaven but the Eastbourne to Brighton bus is one of the best routes in the country!
Yes, it is. Right up over Beachy Head and through Newhaven.
I plan to return to give it a go for sure.
Thanks for watching 👍
The Coaster 12 or 12X.
@@everyone06 that’s the one! Come to think of it, I think I rode it when the southern daysave was also valid on B&H and Metrobus buses, and I rode it from Birling Gap to Seaford, having walked to Birling Gap from Eastbourne
@@everyone06 yes indeed. Gotta be done!
The route is only marketed by DFDS The operator is TransManche and it explains why the o board product is so different. I understood that the ferries were not originally built for the Newhaven route but became available at a bargain price... they were exercise so slightly too long, necessitating the removal of the outer arm of the marina. I would not be surprised if the route closes when the ships reach the end of their lives. The ships swing in the harbour in poor weather conditions... Great clear vlog. Good to see.
Thanks for the kind words and for the extra information. Yes, it does feel like they are playing out the end of an era on this route.
TransManche is owned by the local authorities from the area around Dieppe. So long as the crossing benefits that area, they will likely keep the service running, even if it doesn't directly make a profit.
Do you know if you’re allowed to take dogs on this sailing? Planning a spring break trip to France and Spain in a rental car
Yes, you definitely are because a couple took a dog on my sailing. However, they have to be left in one of the ship's dog crates which are on one of the car decks.
Thanks for watching 👍
do you have a video about ferry Belfast - Liverpool? just booked a ticket
Ah - sounds fun! No, I have not yet taken that route.
Hope you got a cabin!
No! Recommended? @@wjoot
Many times. Before worked for TOE in Dieppe.
Hope the video brought back some memories. Thanks for watching 👍
Didnt realise ferries were still a thing
Indeed they are! I love em!
We used the TOE car for UK football matches.By missing tthe Friday boat back.Till the customs pulled the car appart for "drugs from Brighton". The terminal has moved over the water and the maritime station gone. I had a room by the station. One night I waited all night on the historic pebble beach for a stormbound ferry off a train from Paris. The night of Lockerbie the crossing was even stranger.
Hmm, they sound like mixed memories 😉
Others have mentioned the time when the ship docked at the inner harbour and connected with the maritime station. At least (apart from the walk on the road at the start) the stroll along the quayside into the town was mostly pleasant!
Thanks for watching 👍
👍 Cheers, Johnny Hoover!! Lovely video with a great deal of detailed commentary!! Thank you, Johnny!! Brings back memories of crossing the English Channel a number of times (pre-Channel Tunnel). I'm not an intrepid seafarer, but rather a landlubber prone to motion sickness. After a crossing on a hovercraft in a gale, that did it for me.
Chuck in Northern New England
@@bartonone2005 thanks Chuck! I do suffer with sea sickness too. But I've been lucky with all my ferry crossings so far!
Thanks for watching and sharing your memories too 👍
Hi Johnny this vessel is currently having it’s interior completely rebuilt. Seven Sisters has just finished her rebuild. It would be worth returning to see the finished result.
Thanks for the tip. I did enjoy that route, so may well do it again.
And thanks for watching 👍
@@JohnnyHooverTravels Having recently travelled on both ships, it appears that the main change from the "refit" involved extending the shops into the circular area of the lower rear lounges, to take advantage of the post-Brexit return of Duty Free (although from how not busy the till was during the crossings, I don't think the investment is proving worthwhile).
@@neil733 thanks for that extra info 👍
Interesting. I might try that route instead of cherbourg to portsmouth and avoid brittany ferries.
@@janesouth5649 Yes. I would recommend it.
Thanks for watching 👍
Excellent thank you !
@@spaceoddity5674 you are very welcome. Thanks for watching 👍
This brought back memories! Use to do this trip in the late 80’s when the ferry use to go up the river into the town centre!
@@andrewventhem3130 Yes, i think people do miss that. It is a little inconvenient in Dieppe if you are a foot passenger. I suppose most people add the word "car" to "ferry" these days.
The staff have always been great on every ferry i have been on, but the Harwich/Hoek ferry was the only one that felt it was supporting foot passengers properly.
Thanks so much for watching and sharing your memories 👍
@@JohnnyHooverTravelsEven though I use to live in Clacton near Harwich, I never did the Harwich ferry, don’t think I even caught the train, I did do the Gare de Nord Paris to Dieppe harbour train in the late 80’s when was a single journey and you went pass Gare de Dieppe to the harbour!
We used this route a couple of times when there were problems on the Dover-Calais route during the Summer peak-period. The Transmanche ferries take an eternity to offload at the destination when fully loaded. Depending upon where they tell you to park, it can take up to 45 minutes to get off. The ferries themselves are OK but much smaller and tend to feel cramped (at peak times which is when we travelled on them). The food is OK but nothing special. On a sunny and warmer day, it’s best to ‘get up top’ and relax on the open decks rather than endure the busy inside space. In their favour, these ships are much better than the vessels I used on the route back in the 1970s. They were dreadful. It’s a real shame they don’t provide a shuttle bus to the town centre and rail station.
Yes, a shuttle through the town to the station would be handy for onward travellers.
I get your point about the size of the ferry and I agree that on a lovely day with lots of passengers it is going to be a lot nicer outside than inside.
Thank you so much for watching 👍
The problem is that neither port has much space for passport/customs lanes, and (unlike at Dover-Calais and Eurotunnel) the destination checks are on arrival rather than before departure. This means that the queue for passport control will reach back to the ship, so unloading is delayed as there isn't space on land for everybody.
Johnny your videos are a special treat - thanks so much.
Lovely of you to say so. I did love making this one for sure! 👍
Really narrow and old school car-ramp to the ferry. I thought this ship was older, my guess would be in the 80s. Yellow ferries somehow doesn’t match, I think. Anyway, the crossing looks beautiful 😊
Yes it is very old fashioned for sure. But still a lovely trip!
It was so calm it probably wasn't using the stabilisers to save fuel.
Ah. That makes sense. Not a boat/ship person, so thanks for that extra information 👍
Often done on Dover/Calais route but the size of the ferries helps.
Great video as always Johnny, thank you for sharing. Every visit to Newhaven, I tell myself I'll take the ferry. Bucket list for 2024!
Yes, do it! It was great fun and Dieppe is lovely too 😀
This is a regular route for myself and a few freinds who (now we are retired) have 3 day relaxation trips. Ok, we have a few drinks. Dieppe is a beutiful town and there are some great restaurants in the town. I look forward to your video on the Dieppe stay. Over all with the budget hotel we use it is a cheap minibreak.
Great idea. Thanks for watching 👍
Brings back memories of a day trip with our friends in Sussex, when the aim used to be to load up with cheap alcohol. Liked the shots of Dieppe.
Haha so many people seem to have recollections of this route from days gone by!
Seems a lovely ferry trip. With Dieppe being a lesser important passenger port even a good portuion of the railway has suffered
Yes it was lovely. It was quiet. Felt like we were sneaking out through a back door to the country!
Was looking for one on the polar express!!!! Season greetings and just subscribed
Thanks very much for subscribing! Welcome aboard 👍
Our school class went on the ferry to Dieppe in a storm. Spectacular outbreak of sea sickness.
Yes, the only time I had ever done the crossing before was with the school in the 70s. No sick for us though. Relatively benign crossings as i recall.
Thanks for watching 👍
Looking forward to these travels
Thanks! I'm looking forward to hearing what people have to say about them! 👍
I have used this route twice this year ... in both directions .... but unfortunately they have been the overnight crossings. It is less expensive travelling from Scotland during the day and so I miss out on seeing much crossing La Manche. Your little video was a chance to see what I had missed. Both my crossings were during the high season and cabins were at a premium resulting in a tiring, uncomfortable voyage. A nice breakfast, however, set me up for onward travel. By the way, the ship's name Côte d' Albâtre, translates as the alabaster coast (the cliffs you see on reaching France).
Thanks for your memories of your trips, and especially thanks for that translation. Damn! I would certainly have added that nugget to the voiceover if I'd taken the trouble to translate the name!
Thanks again 👍
@@JohnnyHooverTravelsTranslation not meant as a criticism.
@@Grangeburn no criticism taken. It was a really interesting comment! I just wish I'd been bright enough to know that because it is a really neat name.
Thank you for this video, brings back so many memories, use to do this in the late eighties when the ship used to sail right into Dieppe!
Yes, lots of people have recalled when it went into the inner harbour. I kinda wished it still did as I walked along that busy road after disembarking. was able to cut it short in the edit, but it was no fun...
Thanks for the kind words and for watching 👍
It seems a bit odd that foot passengers now seem to have to embark and disembark from the ships via the car deck.
On certain routes, either the dockside doesn't enable walking on or there just isn't the "foot" traffic to warrant it.
That particular route seems not that busy...

I got hooked on Amercan football watching the Redskins Dolphins Superbowl on Channel 4. I was staggered that Riggins needed oxygen when he did less than your average rugby player. Just because i liked the name I am a Cowboys fan.
Ah the Cowboys. Years of over promising and under delivering. Maybe this year will be different 🤷♂️
We considered using this route on our trip to France earlier this year, however we couldn't justify the extra travel time compared with the Dover--Calais route, despite the lower price. Cross-channel ferries really have markedly increased in price since the pandemic, which is a great shame.
Ah well maybe dear old DFDS may come in a bit cheaper now! Of course, I doubt you can dial up the same weather 😉
Thanks for watching 👍
@@JohnnyHooverTravels thanks for the video!
@@FlyingPhysicist you are very welcome
This crossing used to be so much frendlier to the foot passengers until at least the mid 90's, from when both the new port in Dieppe opened (a 30 minute walk from the old Terminal) and Newhaven Marine station closed (the original passanger terminal).
Yes that's what I was thinking. I did this trip with my parents when very young and it was one of the British Railways (before Sealink days) ferries and we docked in the old town port area. That port was still being used in the early 1980s when I made the journey with a Jetfoil from Brighton Marina ... the company was Seajet and the service didn't survive for long.
In the 1970s I used the Newhaven-Dieppe crossing several times as part of the connecting British Rail/Sealink Ferry/SNCF boat train service between London Victoria and Paris Gare d-Austerlitz, via Newhaven Harbour and Dieppe Maritime. I seem to recall there were two boat train services a day in both directions, one daytime, one at night.
The Dieppe ferry port in those days was alongside the Dieppe Maritime rail station on the other side of the inlet where you were walking. You came down the ship's gangplank and climbed straight aboard the train. The Ro-Ro ferry vehicles drove straight onto the Dieppe quayside, causing some town centre congestion.
@@frglee Yes that's right there was also a night service which was sold at a lower price. Thanks for refreshing my memory !
Yes, us foot passengers now have to get used to the "busy road walk" whenever we sail! Steve Marsh was saying just the same in a recent video.
Was this the same trip as the Southern Daysave?
No. It was a couple of weeks later.
