I just spent 10 months in Iloilo. Im an American living in Oregon. Such a great mid size city. In terms of the surrounding areas of Iloilo…Ya Guimaras is overrated. But if you take a car to Gigantes (it’s only a 3 hour drive) it is paradise without the tourists. Also Concepcion 2.5 hour drive is really beautiful White sand and clear blue water with nice hiking and great boat tours. Another place for a beautiful hike is Bucari. Amazing scenery and really cool temps. Oh ya I got engaged out there as well. Iloilo is a great place to live. I loved my time out there

Boracay is just a comfortable airconditioned 4hr bus ride to Boracay and its white sand beaches. Guimaras I'd ideal for long road biking , its highways are edged and cooled by tall lush trees on both sides. Guimaras had the sweetest mangoes in the world. Guimaras also has white sand beaches and romantic hidden coves . Guimaras is just a comfortable 20minutes fastcraft boat ride from Iloilo City via the Fort San Parola terminal.

Iloilo will be developing more green spaces around the city so it'll be perfect to come in the last quarter of the year or early next year. There will be an Iloilo Tree Park (which will also feature artworks of different Ilonggo artists) and a beach forest near Molo. There will also be more upcoming condominiums, medical centers, modernized public markets and business districts. For places to go visit, Southern Iloilo features a lot of historical sites and mountain resorts particularly in Tigbauan, Miag-ao, San Joaquin etc. while Northern Iloilo has beautiful islands near Ajuy, Concepcion and Carles and the wonderful Alapasco Lake in Batad,Iloilo. The other provinces of Panay Island such as Antique, Aklan and Capiz also has a lot of hidden gems to offer like the gatorade blue waters of Bugang River in Pandan, Antique.

Outside of the big cities, power distribution is handled by so called electric cooperatives. They are quasi-public/private organizations where consumers are automatically considerd members of the cooperative. Because of that set-up, there is a lot of inefficiencies resulting in ill-maintained facilities, revenue losses/wastage and high power rates. That is the reason why consumers and the local governments coverd by the Batangas Electric Cooperative that includes Nasugbu want MERALCO to take over the distribution of electricity there.

That was a good assessment, in my humble opinion of Iloilo.
Another thing I'd like to add which I know a lot of expats seem to not be concerned about is hospitals & healthcare.
I know most expats especially men are concerned about finding a Filipina. But you all need to be concerned about hospitals and healthcare .
One of the many things my husband and I have listed in our necessities is hospitals. We pray that we would never need it, but in case we do we'd like to be close to one.
Just something I want to throw out there. Thanks again Chris. My family and I are looking forward to the Sinulog parade 😁👍

ILOILO has plenty of modern and HITECH hospitals comparable to those in Metro Manila. And not only that, ILOILO has plenty of good quality universities and schools. The latest educational institution to establish in ILOILO is the St. La Salle University -Iloilo. Construction is now in full swing. Usually in cities where there is an ATENEO, there is no LA SALLE. Only Metro Manila has both a La Salle and an Ateneo. But now, outside of Metro Manila, it is only in ILOILO where both La Salle and Ateneo have been inspired to set foot their new institutions. This gives us an idea of how Iloilo is dearly viewed by Filipinos as an ideal city to live in, so livable, so beautiful, so clean , so orderly, so prudently progressive, so cultured with plenty of exciting Museums and Art Galleries, so wellness-conscious with its plentiful parks , plazas, public flower gardens (as in the Garden of Love), riverside Esplanades for strolling, exercizing biking, and jogging activities, great hospitals and universities; definitely now one of the new great cities of the world. ILOILO's latest achievement - the UNESCO CREATIVE CITY OF GASTRONOMY in the Philippines.

@@CarefreeChris Ginno, a retired Filipino-American US Armed Forces man, regularly had his medical checkup in ILOILO CITY at the Medical City-Iloilo Phinma Hospital, which takes care of his TRICARE HEALTH INSURANCE benefits needs. I think for US and foreign expats, ILOILO CITY has adequate health facilities and health insurance links that make it easy for Ginno and one other retired US citizen. The latest Hi-Tech hospital to open in Metro Ilollo is the Asia Pacific Medical Center, a nine-storey fully equipped medical facility in ILOILO CITY. There are 3 topnotch Medical Schools in ILOILO CITY, and the Nursing schools are the oldest and pioneering in the Philippines. The Central Philippine University (CPU) College of Nursing was established in the early 1900s by Americans, and also the Iloilo Mission Hospital, when the Philippines became a US colony. The St. Paul's Hospital and the St. Paul University College of Nursing was also established in the early 1900s a the St. Paul Sisters of Chartre.

It has three shopping departments, some coffee shops, three or four hospitals, all within "reach" - not to mention, tourist sites also, relatively, within reach. Iloilo as a province not just the city is conservative and middle class. Iloilo City has more wealthy and filthy rich families than in Cebu. Cebu became what it is, because of it's founding. Other than that prostitutes are all over. The gap between rich and poor in Cebu is way to wide. The people in Iloilo are not show offs and the rich are not hidden. You won't see them drinking coffee in a Starbucks, but sidewalks wearing flip flops in coffee stalls people just pass bye. They don't eat in fancy restaurants often but to places could be deemed dirty by others but behind all that is it's history. They don't like to stand out. Foreigners don't stay in the City. They are in beaches or beach houses around the province and across the channel what used to be part of Iloilo province, Guimaras Island. Cebus GDP is higher than Iloilo. To account all profits from Iloilo 1% it will twice or thrice than Cebu. Take out the sugar cane plantations and ranches in Negros and Guimaras, shipping. Media and trade all over the country, cattle and fruit farms in Mindanao. Iloilo City was not designed or would want to be like Cebu or Manila. Iloilo folks wants progress but wants to keep it as a low profile. So we can enjoy the walk, the food and the smiles of people without standing out. Bigger Cities has lost it's identity, it became money driven.

Completely disagree. Iloilo is definitely a more walkable city than Cebu. ILOILO is the Biking Capital of the Philippines AND is the most walkable city in the Philippines. So, it's falsehood to say Cebu is more walkable. Cebu streets are air-polluted, so how can it be walkable ? ILOILO streets are pollution-free and have sidewalks and wider sidewalks than those in Cebu, and Iloilo's sidewalks are clean and landscaped with trees, flowerbeds and greenery. ILOILO's traffic is manageable, with definitely so much less jams than Cebu and definitely so much better than the ever-choked streets of Manila. ILOILO has plenty of functioning traffic lights almost in every major street corner from the City Proper to the suburbs in the different Districs. And ILOILO's transportation system is better than Manila's and Cebu - plenty of new airconditioned e-buses, clean and new white airconditioned nice smelling taxicabs everywhere, Grab, and the traditional public utility jeepneys. Some local taxicab lines operate like Grab, you just copy the cell phone number on the exterior door of the cab, and then call the cab office at street-side when you need a ride, no registration necessary. It is easy to go mall-hopping from the downtown area to the Diversion Road and the Jaro, Molo and La Paz Districts, and even up to the new malls in Pavia and Oton at Savannah. ILOILO's numerous hospitals are comparable to the hi-tech hospitals of Manila. ILOILO CITY and the METRO ILOILO is the cleanest, most orderly, most beautiful, and and most Livable City in the Philippines.

True. I'm grew up in Iloilo City. I even walk from the pier to Lapaz Market for Batchoy. That's even years before the construction of the river walk. I even walk from my High School Sun Yat Sen to Arevalo, Molo. It's definitely walkable. So I don't know what you disagree. If it's design as a City. Check the history of Iloilo and Bacolod. Bacolod City is not walkable, they are far apart. Bacolod was designed to accomodate the truck loads of sugarcane during the early times. Iloilo is not, the old buildings are clustered. The reason I enjoy walking around Iloilo City. The City is divided by the Iloilo river. Because of the progress, it has to expand farther out. Walking from Plaza Libertad to the even SM Mega Mall? I still can at 53 years of age. But to many, who has not experience trek to the farm lands. Then you don't understand what the guy said about walkable. @@armandosune3839

@@kapiatgatas Completely agree with you. ILOILO is the most walkable city in the Philippines. That's why I wonder why this guy vlogger says that ILOILO is not walkable and Cebu is. It's Cebu that's not walkable. You can't walk from Colon to the Ayala area, and still not be bothered by the traffic and pollution, can you? Can you walk leisurely from SM City at the port to Talamban and not be harassed by traffic and pollution, and shall we say , be on the sidewalk all the way? I guess our blogger says Cebu Is walkable, yes it is, but only when you don't leave the IT park and just go round and around the IT park "bubble" area.

You guys came from somewhere and trying to compare your life style in the US? Dah! I live here in the US for 32 years and I traveled all over the world. So don't make up stories like your life in the US is so great! As if I don't know your life style here! So if your life here in the US so great why are you in the Philippines then?

Parts of Iloilo are dirty. But parts are super clean. Maybe you have been recently., but the new Festive walk area is as really modern.

It's bad traffic 2nd week to the end of January. Because there is a festival coming and a lot of street activities. It's Dinagyang Festival after Sinulog in Cebu & Ati-Atihan Festival in Kalibo Aklan. Of course we don't have canyoneering because Panay Island is mostly flat. Rice and sugarcanes are the agricultural products. While Cebu's topography is rocky that's why there are canyons. They eat corn because they cannot plant rice. You guys should stay where you are. Ilonggos are calm people we don't want dramas like you guys. Maybe you guys should live in Zurich, Switzerland, Santorini or Mykonos, Greece or Singapore.

This is an interesting interaction that we foreigners need to be mindful of. We're simply not welcomed everywhere in the Philippines. Several guys have come up to me recently regarding this same way of thinking toward us. If you're here, be a good guy and walk around with a smile:)
