i honestly love the batter's voice acting? the mispronunciation of certain words and his tone makes it sound sort of like something mimicking human speech rather than someone just speaking which adds a sort of chill to it that i dont think would be there if he just had generic male protagonist voice (which i dont think would be right for a character like the batter anyway)
I find myself in agreement with you. Given my miniscule understanding of the story, it does seem exceptionally fitting given what The Batter is near the end of the game. I think he needs to work on the voice a bit so as to make it seem a tiny bit more obvious it's a mimicry but otherwise I really hope they stick this voice instead of changing it like the above pinned comment states. Also I much prefer this depiction of the Judge as the game made it hard for me to get any real feel for the characters past a surface level analysis. Animation is pretty good with excellent use of the OST and sound effects. Given how much content is in the other zones and Sugar. I wonder how the animator will continue from here. Thinking I should've just made this a stand alone comment now...
I think the mispronunciation of the words and his voice are perfect for his character. His speech mistakes make him seem like he’s mimicking human speech, and his monotone voice is perfect for his “holy prophet” sorta character

Plus, with the guidance of the player, he may not be used to talking on his 'own' anymore, so the player would 'help' if given the prompt. Either way, I like the voice. It's unusual at first, but the more I rewatch it the more it grows on me!

I'm kinda a fan of The Batter's strange voice acting? It really adds to the atmosphere of the character in my opinion and I think it fits very well given well, everything we know about him. Also on a side note I sincerely hope you continue this project as I have quite the itch to see a purified zone rendered in your wonderful animation

Since everyone is talking about the voice acting bit, I'd like to discuss other parts of this. I really liked how "quiet" some of your shots are. Lingering just a little bit on shots like them running and the zoomed out view of Zone 0 really helps set the seemingly solemn-ish tone of OFF. I like it a lot. The lip syncing is also pretty good, and showing the Batter without a face a couple times does his character wonders. I don't get why you pitch shifted the Fourteen Residents song, but it's fine. The shot where the Batter whiffs and the judge hits him from behind to make him lose balance was a nice touch that will most likely help show how much the Batter will improve in combat over time. The clean art for the backgrounds is dead on, though I sorta miss the sketchy look of the characters. It would be extremely difficult/time consuming to animate them that way, so I don't blame you for making the call of a cleaner look for them. A cool idea for later on is that during intense fights with certain enemies the art could get a little sketchy... But that's asking a lot from you. I don't want to push you harder when animation is already a brutal process. Overall, I think you captured the essence of OFF adequately well, and I can't wait to see more in the future.
I didn't know about the game "Off" and clicked on your video because of the pretty preview... It was quite a trip, man! Very interesting, unsettling. I like your animation and this simple shapes of buildings! And yes i like the Batter's voice. I think he should sound like inhuman creature with strange notes in his voice. You just KNOW that he isn't human (you know like Gman sounds? something like that). He is dangerous, i can feel he won't stop during his mission. Thank you! I will wait for new chapters!
FarmHend it doesn’t sound “naturally” void of emotion or robotic, just sounds like someone trying too hard to reach that expectation. The VA needs to practice. I think his accent might be holding him back.
The true villain in OFF is the narrator who tells us right at the beginning who the batter is and that we have to help him complete his sacred mission. Awesome content right here
The animation is really incredible, absolutely top notch, but I'm really not a fan of the Batter's voice. It's barely understandable sometimes, and the fact that he says 'The Baiter' and not 'The Batter' is really unfortunate. The Judge was great though, big fan of him.
While it's been said to death that The Batter's voice acting could use some work, I really think there is something to the Batter having a very dull, almost detached tone of voice. He strikes me as a very obtuse and awkward man who would rather use as few words as possible. So it would honestly make sense for his tone of voice to be stunted and retrained. My one gripe might be the pronunciation of some words? But even then, it doesn't really ruin anything all too much. I am excited to see how it develops once the next installment of this beautiful work gets released. So fucking happy to see this iconic game get this level of dedicated attention. I am subbed and ready to see this story unfold :) EDIT: Another small critique I have is the real lack of folly. Though I am well aware this is yet another headache when it comes to making media, small sound effects go a long way when it comes to making a world feel both real and believable. I really like the clever use of in game sound effects, and think if you added small stuff like footsteps and the sounds of objects moving/swinging/ect, it would really help make this project feel even more polished. I am super hype to see more! I really hope the algorithm picks this up and brings OFF back into the public's attention.
I think that everyone in the comments should give the Batters VA a chance. Seeing foreign pronunciation isn't common, and OFF is a foreign game anyways. Honestly, I'd love the whole series to be in French like the original game was made.
It's not "foreign" pronunciation, it's just wrong pronunciation. A few of the mistakes were laughable, especially the very first line. Besides the amateurish pronunciation, the quality and timbre of the voice is not suited for VA, the recording and processing is _way_ below speak-all-your-lines-into-your-phone quality, and the rhythm, inflection and general acting is just cringe-inducingly bad. There are billions of non-native English speakers, but very few of them take on a VA role that they are in no way up for.

Going "oh, any flaw is acceptable it's fine" is just as counter-productive and destructive as hostility and put-down attitudes.

YOOOOOOOOO THIS IS SICK!!!!!! The animation is So Smooth it’s criminal, I love it so much!!! And the voice acting for the Judge is absolutely Perfect 10/10. The VA for the Batter could use a bit of practice but that’s ok!!!! His voice still fits him. I really love the perspective in some of the shots, really well done. Anyway, this is the best thing I’ve seen this week, this month, this year, thank you (and the VAs) So Much for putting this much work into it, we all really appreciate it!!! Also I really loved the small bonk sound when the bat hit the ground during the fight lmao that got me. This is seriously the best fan made animation I’ve ever seen for any fandom, it’s incredible. 9:48 Holy SHIT I just had an intense nostalgia bomb from 2013. I remember finding "Stay In Your Coma" on the OST, and wondering where the hell it came from because it's not in the game. It's so short but I ended up listening to it on repeat This was amazing, OFF is an underrated game that shaped my perception of gaming when I first played it

It's time to get OFF. Loved the Judge's voice, its smooth and graceful. Even the batter's inhuman pronouncement of things fit well, just a little off that stands out against the grain.
I will say this episode looks great. The style of animation dose feel like it matches the game a bit, but a little more cleaner. However, not to mention the Elephant in the room, but I think the weakest part of the animation is the voice acting. The Judge's voice actor did a fantastic Job, but the Batter's voice just feels weak. I'm sorry but I don't think their wasn't much effort put into the batter voice. Unless I'm missing something important, I think the batters voice is the weakest part of this animation. Still with with my grips overt his, the animation was still good, and almost felt like I'm watching a small show. *_My score 9/10._*
Other comments have said that the batters voice actors native language is French, which means that he is truly putting a great deal of effort to speak in English for his character.

I had no idea what this was coming into this, my eye was caught by the thumbnail and I was entranced. This feels like something made by Studio Ghibli, especially when he enters the nothingness. All the voices fit really well with the characters and I am really excited to see more. Thank you.

I was discussing Tumblr Sexymen with my online friends when I suddenly stumbled upon an individual named „Zacharie“. I wondered who this might be and asked my friend. They told me that he’s from a game called „OFF“. I unknowingly asked, what OFF might be and.. Well, they told me I should totally try it out. I made my little researches, downloaded the 3rd English version and played along. And now I find myself in a deep, deep hyperfixation based on OFF and I‘m honestly so thankful for this existing. Due to the fact that this game is. Old. As hell, I did not expect a lot of good, time-accurate content. But this.. This is a pearl. I’m looking forward to the 3rd episode. Also, big fan of the Batter‘s voice actor here.

I'm so happy that this is finally out! The animation's fantastic- though, I think Sɨssel's voice would be much better suited to a French dub, his accent is just too strong for an English voice for the batter, it sounds unnatural and awkward (not to sound mean, I know everyone's doing their best and speaking other languages is hard!).
This is great, the animation and coloring is perfect but I will say that the batter's voice needs a little work, but overall I really love this. No rush but I can't Wait for episode 2
it was pretty good but tbh ill be real it has some room for improvement like there isnt too much motion with the characters, it needs a little bit more background detail (like inside the building in zone 0) and the voice acting was a lil OFF (lol) but it is really a good animation and cant wait to see more

I just played and finished the game because this serie was making me so curious. As the title appeared, I just understood what the name OFF was for :o Also "the batter has an important mission, makes sure it is accomplished" sounds so different after finishing the game!
OFF is my favourite RPG maker game of all time, I've played it 5/6 times and it never gets tiring or boring, everything about it is wonderful, and you made it justice. Thank you so much for bringing this wonderful story to animation! I'm looking forward to see other parts

Since everyone is talking about the voice acting bit, I'd like to discuss other parts of this.
I really liked how "quiet" some of your shots are. Lingering just a little bit on shots like them running and the zoomed out view of Zone 0 really helps set the seemingly solemn-ish tone of OFF. I like it a lot.
The lip syncing is also pretty good, and showing the Batter without a face a couple times does his character wonders.
I don't get why you pitch shifted the Fourteen Residents song, but it's fine.
The shot where the Batter whiffs and the judge hits him from behind to make him lose balance was a nice touch that will most likely help show how much the Batter will improve in combat over time.
The clean art for the backgrounds is dead on, though I sorta miss the sketchy look of the characters. It would be extremely difficult/time consuming to animate them that way, so I don't blame you for making the call of a cleaner look for them. A cool idea for later on is that during intense fights with certain enemies the art could get a little sketchy... But that's asking a lot from you. I don't want to push you harder when animation is already a brutal process.
Overall, I think you captured the essence of OFF adequately well, and I can't wait to see more in the future.
I think Fourteen Residents might be pitchshifted to avoid copyright.
I didn't know about the game "Off" and clicked on your video because of the pretty preview... It was quite a trip, man! Very interesting, unsettling. I like your animation and this simple shapes of buildings!
And yes i like the Batter's voice. I think he should sound like inhuman creature with strange notes in his voice. You just KNOW that he isn't human (you know like Gman sounds? something like that). He is dangerous, i can feel he won't stop during his mission.

The animation is really incredible, absolutely top notch, but I'm really not a fan of the Batter's voice. It's barely understandable sometimes, and the fact that he says 'The Baiter' and not 'The Batter' is really unfortunate. The Judge was great though, big fan of him.

While it's been said to death that The Batter's voice acting could use some work, I really think there is something to the Batter having a very dull, almost detached tone of voice. He strikes me as a very obtuse and awkward man who would rather use as few words as possible. So it would honestly make sense for his tone of voice to be stunted and retrained. My one gripe might be the pronunciation of some words? But even then, it doesn't really ruin anything all too much. I am excited to see how it develops once the next installment of this beautiful work gets released.
So fucking happy to see this iconic game get this level of dedicated attention. I am subbed and ready to see this story unfold :)
EDIT: Another small critique I have is the real lack of folly. Though I am well aware this is yet another headache when it comes to making media, small sound effects go a long way when it comes to making a world feel both real and believable. I really like the clever use of in game sound effects, and think if you added small stuff like footsteps and the sounds of objects moving/swinging/ect, it would really help make this project feel even more polished. I am super hype to see more! I really hope the algorithm picks this up and brings OFF back into the public's attention.

I think that everyone in the comments should give the Batters VA a chance. Seeing foreign pronunciation isn't common, and OFF is a foreign game anyways. Honestly, I'd love the whole series to be in French like the original game was made.
It's not "foreign" pronunciation, it's just wrong pronunciation. A few of the mistakes were laughable, especially the very first line. Besides the amateurish pronunciation, the quality and timbre of the voice is not suited for VA, the recording and processing is _way_ below speak-all-your-lines-into-your-phone quality, and the rhythm, inflection and general acting is just cringe-inducingly bad.
There are billions of non-native English speakers, but very few of them take on a VA role that they are in no way up for.

No one can get better without some form of understanding where their faults are; and being unwilling to accept that they are faults is only going to leave someone unchanged and un-self bettered. Anyways, I do think some of the harsh language used by clemens is less than constructive, but he does have a point regaurdless. Going "oh, any flaw is acceptable it's fine" is just as counter-productive and destructive as hostility and put-down attitudes.

YOOOOOOOOO THIS IS SICK!!!!!! The animation is So Smooth it’s criminal, I love it so much!!! And the voice acting for the Judge is absolutely Perfect 10/10. The VA for the Batter could use a bit of practice but that’s ok!!!! His voice still fits him. I really love the perspective in some of the shots, really well done. Anyway, this is the best thing I’ve seen this week, this month, this year, thank you (and the VAs) So Much for putting this much work into it, we all really appreciate it!!! Also I really loved the small bonk sound when the bat hit the ground during the fight lmao that got me. This is seriously the best fan made animation I’ve ever seen for any fandom, it’s incredible. Loved the Judge's voice, its smooth and graceful.
Even the batter's inhuman pronouncement of things fit well, just a little off that stands out against the grain.
Oh my- this is gorgeous, I never had such experience watching something like that, keep going!
I will say this episode looks great. The style of animation dose feel like it matches the game a bit, but a little more cleaner.
However, not to mention the Elephant in the room, but I think the weakest part of the animation is the voice acting. The Judge's voice actor did a fantastic Job, but the Batter's voice just feels weak. I'm sorry but I don't think their wasn't much effort put into the batter voice. Unless I'm missing something important, I think the batters voice is the weakest part of this animation.
Still with with my grips overt his, the animation was still good, and almost felt like I'm watching a small show.

I had no idea what this was coming into this, my eye was caught by the thumbnail and I was entranced.
This feels like something made by Studio Ghibli, especially when he enters the nothingness. All the voices fit really well with the characters and I am really excited to see more.

I was discussing Tumblr Sexymen with my online friends when I suddenly stumbled upon an individual named „Zacharie“. I wondered who this might be and asked my friend. They told me that he’s from a game called „OFF“. I unknowingly asked, what OFF might be and.. Well, they told me I should totally try it out. I made my little researches, downloaded the 3rd English version and played along. And now I find myself in a deep, deep hyperfixation based on OFF and I‘m honestly so thankful for this existing. Due to the fact that this game is. Old. As hell, I did not expect a lot of good, time-accurate content. But this.. This is a pearl. I’m looking forward to the 3rd episode.

I'm so happy that this is finally out! The animation's fantastic- though, I think Sɨssel's voice would be much better suited to a French dub, his accent is just too strong for an English voice for the batter, it sounds unnatural and awkward (not to sound mean, I know everyone's doing their best and speaking other languages is hard!).
This is great, the animation and coloring is perfect but I will say that the batter's voice needs a little work, but overall I really love this.
