I always point to the C8X Pisces Expedition as my go-to starter. The price is hard to beat and for just getting around (including with two passengers) it's a fantastic little workhorse, especially for simple box running tasks. Who needs a bed for for short range operations anyway? 😄 The bonus value that you semi touched on and didn't quite latch onto fully is in the way small size allows it to be the little ship you can park inside your bigger ship. This is important. So many of the more frequently recommended starters run into the situation where they are great springboards to launch into the game with, but before long they get relegated and sidelined as we upgrade out of them. The Pisces, by contrast, has a broader capacity to gain a second life of sorts by being carried around and used as a shuttle from larger ships. This means we can sink our dollars into it and just leave spending there, and _still_ get a benefit from that pledge. Contrast that with a bigger, more capable, subjectively better 'springboard' that will probably end up spending more time in a station hangar eventually, and those dollars sunk into the venerable little Pisces can start looking like a smart spend. 😎
I actually think starters will be super beneficial beyond that springboard start. Those bigger ships that carry others will have a hard time following some paths thru the verse because of jump point sizes as well. If it weren't for the fact that it lacks a jump drive out the get go, I'd definitely agree, but the fact that it's parasitic by default really hurts its scoring IMO.
