I agree he is a little low on a few of these, they probably could go for more. But the one thing we all know about selling and buying, is retail price. Very rarely will you actually get full market retail price for anything much less sports cards. In other words, like Pawn Stars, the buyer/seller has to make money also, so they won't give you $12,000 for a card worth $12,000. Plus these are ungraded so the appraiser is only speculating what they would be worth if graded. Grading is in the eye of the beholder, meaning one graders 6 might be a 4 or an 8, obviously the 4 worth less the 8 worth more. Regardless thank you very much for posting this I enjoy all of the "sports" and comic book related items that show up on Antiques Road Show. Happy Collecting!

So call it what you want but that cards reputation preceeds any appearance it could make.
@@mattportugal9668 what he’s saying my guy is technically it’s not his rookie his true rookie card was the 1951 Bowman and that’s the same set Willie Mays was a rookie quit taking it so seriously lol
I can't see the cards up close, but based on what I can tell, and from a condition standpoint, he's significantly underrating both the Robinson and the Mantle cards.
I only consider someone as their rookie year when they played the ENTIRE year with an MLB team. Mantle kept swapping between the minors/majors all year long in 1951. '52 was his first full year.
Given this important fact, the 1951 Bowman card stands as the only true rookie card. Some claim that because 1952 was the year Topps produced a flagship set 9 and it's Mantle's First Topps Card (FTC) that somehow this translates to it being a rookie card. Because it was his first Topps card, it is referred to as a "Rookie" card without it being his rookie card.
The Wilson Franks is worth $7k now (a few 4's sold), the Jackie is about $35k, the Mantle is worth up to 80 though a lesser 5 sold for $20k earlier in 2021 (but a 2 fetches at least 30k now.) I wish I had been collecting before 2019, based on what I did with Nolan Ryan RC's I would loved to have dominated signed RC's for DiMaggio, Williams, Bird/Magic, Mantle, Mays, Aaron, Banks; only one I came close to in baseball was Aaron I almost bought a trimmed RC before his last signing (finally got a Bird/Magic RC, but Magic's signing fee rose from $30 in 2017 to $1000 for RC's in 2022; hope that drops back a bit.)
Sept 2024 avg. selling prices, per Vintage Card Prices (VCP) -- Mantle PSA 5, $131,000; Robinson PSA 6, $18,750; Williams PSA 3.5 about $7,000. I'd grade the Williams 3.5, I think the bottom left crease is too significant. The other estimates seem good based on the front. AR fan here and I probably did see this when it first aired, but I'd forgotten about it. The appraiser HAS to know it's not a Mantle rookie, right? Maybe he says rookie to try to simplify it for the audience?
The Mantle card is worth a lot more in 2024. The reason this card is considered a holy grail card is twofold. First it’s the Micks first card from Topps and secondly it was part of the high numbered cards which came out later in season and a lot were destroyed so it’s super rare
This lady had a 52 topps mickey mantle one of the holy grails and she had no idea what is was could you imagine grandma finding this card in the attic amazing
After watching this episode, I am sick. From 1953 to 1960, I collected baseball cards and kept all of them neatly filed in a shoe box. I had all of the rookie cards of Mickey Mantle, Willy Mays, Henry Aaron, Sandy Koufax, etc. I enlisted in the Navy in September 1961 and when I returned from overseas, in early 1964, I found out my mother threw them out. How did anyone know what they would be worth today.
JASON WISE I thought his grading was pretty good. That mantle has a big ding upper right. Off center. I even said in my head before he called out a number that that mantle looks to be a 5 nearing to a 6....so maybe 5.5 on psa. But that mantle in that grade should get over $100k. Would be stupid to sell for less.
I just don't get why people have different numbers on appraisals..ive taking a 3.79 carat diamond for its value and diffrent jewlers give me different answers..anybody know why?
Riddle Gunner that’s because there’s soooooooooo much mark up that price differences can fluctuate by a lot. Also the way diamonds are grade is very subjective. Many sellers have their own proprietary way of grading. So basically you don’t know if what you’re buying is good or not. Basically if you’re not a player in this market you’re at a complete loss. That’s how they want it.
@@oe542 Got 3 different prices in one day...so basically if jewlers are in a good mood it will be ecpensive if hes in a bad mood and havent got laid itll be not as expensive? 😆
Lol my Grandpas mom gave all his cards away when he went to college. Most of his cards were from the 40s and 50s. He had a few older Ruth's and several Williams and Mantle rookies. I've seen him get upset one time...and it when he told me that story.
If I had collected baseball cards, I would have said to my parents point blank, "Throw away my cards and I will not only put you in the worst nursing home that I can find, but I will also alter your will and have control over all of your money and possessions". Let them recover from the shock of that statement.
@@ericfureal3257 I did get a Spider-man 1 and Amazing Fantasy 15 in 1988 for $1500. Sadly I sold them in 2002 after 911. Got 5k, but wish I held on to them!
Sadly, the card and comic book market is based on speculation. It's difficult at best to know what one or the other will bring months, let alone years down the road. That being said, the market is fun, it's alive, and will continue to grow. At what rate, is hard to say, but the experts are convinced it's a worth while venture. I, personally, like the sports collectibles market more than the card market.
You have to remember. The fact that many people didn't keep them is what makes them so valuable.
Didn’t the man who tried to (and mostly failed to) market them in the 50’s eventually dump them into the ocean?
Exactly. So when everybody keeps hot rookies of today, they either fade to oblivion or the demand hardly ever catches up to the supply.
Well yeah, that’s how value works on things like this, scarcity plus demand equals value.

Exactly, those of us that know the hobby in detail know it's the 1951 Bowman
51 Bowman is first prospect card where 52 Topps is first MLB Rookie card. Hence to why it’s 10x more valuable
In mint condition I’ll take the 52 over the 51 any day!
@@nickmatalucci7675 The 51 Bowman is the rookie card. The Topps is more in demand because it's a more desirable card.
I only consider someone as their rookie year when they played the ENTIRE year with an MLB team. Mantle kept swapping between the minors/majors all year long in 1951. '52 was his first full year.
The Mantle one is way low. It's easily worth double.
Value increases fast and I'm sure this was filmed a while ago.
Not to nitpick, but he didn't even mention the centering issue on the Mantle.
without seeing the back it would grade at a 6. but, I'm afraid it may have been trimmed at some point. hopefully I'm wrong.
There worth over a million now
Given this important fact, the 1951 Bowman card stands as the only true rookie card. Some claim that because 1952 was the year Topps produced a flagship set 9 and it's Mantle's First Topps Card (FTC) that somehow this translates to it being a rookie card.
Because it was his first Topps card, it is referred to as a "Rookie" card without it being his rookie card.
That Mick is wayyyyyy higher now.
It was no accident that she got the cards out of the attic before the storm!😮
It’s worth way more than that!
I’d take out a loan on my house to buy that mantle for 30 grand! That’s a 60-75 thousand dollar card!
Les Wadley slabbed I think it’s a $500k+ card
@@JDBloodstone a PSA 10 maybe (although even than that seems like quite a bit) but not a PSA 5
Richard Terroni Wut? Noooo... a PSA 9 just sold at auction for 3.12 million!
@@JDBloodstone I don't think so a T206 Honus Wagner typically doesn't even go for that much
Richard Terroni they estimate the PSA 10 would sell for at least $10 million but the owner isn’t selling
That Mickey Mantle with the recent bill run in card collecting is worth a couple hundred thousand now
My dad had a great vintage card collection, sadly don't know what happened to them.
Beautiful
where is this and where can i bring my cards to get viewed like this..
I have a ton of baseball cards but where is the best place to try to sell them?
Me too have u found a place??
eBay
What cards do you have
Just don’t take them to Rick
If she sold right after this show, at those estimates, she is experiencing MASSIVE seller's remorse right now.
The Mantle card is worth a lot more in 2024. The reason this card is considered a holy grail card is twofold. First it’s the Micks first card from Topps and secondly it was part of the high numbered cards which came out later in season and a lot were destroyed so it’s super rare
I have jose canseco rookie card graded 9 nm. Wonder if i can get that sold for 5 bucks
Not if it's a Sportflicks RC... More like 3 bucks.
That mantle would do more than his 40 Gs quote today if there are no wrinkles. Those corners look relatively good and the coloring isn’t bad.
The 52 Jackie today is worth about $30,000 as a PSA 6
This lady had a 52 topps mickey mantle one of the holy grails and she had no idea what is was could you imagine grandma finding this card in the attic amazing
Thats not Mantle's rookie. The 1951 bowman is. How could they mess that up?
That mantle is a easy psa 4-5 maybe 6 hopefully psa didn’t wake up on the wrong side of the bed and slap a OC on it but easy $50-60k
What's OC.?
A three 52 mantle just sold for 55 Grand
Here we are in April 2021 and those Mickey Mantle PSA 5 cards are going for $100K+. Hope she held on to that one!
If only mom’s understood what “collectible” meant
Wow I hope she kept these
Dude if that Mantle card hit an auction it would fly for over $200k.
She needs to get those graded by PSA for them to be worth anything.
Mantle card is off center. Most likely a PSA 6 or 7 due to its condition.
I have 2 52 mantle rookies.. type 1 and type 2 as she has here
Mantle card looks trimmed or being pressed by the case.
The people that know least about them cards has always nice value cards
They were all at least a grade eight just for the color in the crispness of the cards 7 min
My friend brandon had that same mantle card in grammer school in the 80s.
The two most recent 4s on ebay sold for around $150k, and $100k. Wow!
My mind is blown thinking about the Carnage that tornado did to all those other cards that got lost, damaged.
I just don't get why people have different numbers on appraisals..ive taking a 3.79 carat diamond for its value and diffrent jewlers give me different answers..anybody know why?
Riddle Gunner because markets like these are incredibly subjective. The values are incredibly over inflated.
@@oe542 In one year i got 14 different prices
Riddle Gunner that’s because there’s soooooooooo much mark up that price differences can fluctuate by a lot. Also the way diamonds are grade is very subjective. Many sellers have their own proprietary way of grading. So basically you don’t know if what you’re buying is good or not.
Basically if you’re not a player in this market you’re at a complete loss. That’s how they want it.
@@oe542 Got 3 different prices in one day...so basically if jewlers are in a good mood it will be ecpensive if hes in a bad mood and havent got laid itll be not as expensive? 😆
My goodwill find dream are these cards
Lol my Grandpas mom gave all his cards away when he went to college. Most of his cards were from the 40s and 50s. He had a few older Ruth's and several Williams and Mantle rookies. I've seen him get upset one time...and it when he told me that story.
If I had collected baseball cards, I would have said to my parents point blank, "Throw away my cards and I will not only put you in the worst nursing home that I can find, but I will also alter your will and have control over all of your money and possessions". Let them recover from the shock of that statement.
All worth so much more now
In 1973,a dealer in Staten Island was selling entire mint sets of the 1952 TOPPS for $350.Naturally,I passed.Story of my life.
Tom Dockery I know right! I could of bought amazing spider man #1 for $700 in 1986, but I couldn't come up with the cash because I was 11
My comic book days were fading when that came out in 63',but I did have "Flash of Two Worlds" in 1961.
I have a Johnny Stahl meye r s baseball lit card the hot dog one
@@ericfureal3257 I did get a Spider-man 1 and Amazing Fantasy 15 in 1988 for $1500. Sadly I sold them in 2002 after 911. Got 5k, but wish I held on to them!
Sadly, the card and comic book market is based on speculation. It's difficult at best to know what one or the other will bring months, let alone years down the road. That being said, the market is fun, it's alive, and will continue to grow. At what rate, is hard to say, but the experts are convinced it's a worth while venture. I, personally, like the sports collectibles market more than the card market.
Sell the card collection and buy a house where they don't have tornado's
Wild to think that only 6 years later that Mantle is now worth $130k+.
03:05 that look that she’s giving him
Tha Robinson is a solid 5k
