Apparently Aska was gonna be Mitsu from the TMNT 3 movie, but it was changed at the last second because....well, the TMNT 3 movie happened.
I've heard this too.
@@sonder420 same here. I recall seeing this video from Whang!. Apparently there was a beta build where she was named Mitsu. ruclips.net/video/1a7P4JqweMc/видео.html
Yeah, I actually thought it was her when I was little because I didnt remember her name from the movie. I saw it once or twice.
I was hoping someone mentioned this in the comments. Whenever I play TF on SNES, I always call her Mitsu. The TMNT 3 movie may have been objectively terrible but Mitsu was pretty cool! So I think of this game as a redemption for this character.
why did they give her such a horny redesign tho?
Sisyphus is a weird choice, but the fact that he's a dung beetle (which roll balls of poop) and is named after a Greek figure who was sentenced to push a boulder for eternity, is hilarious.
There should have been an eagle named Prometheus too. Every name they used could of been an Italian Renaissance painter, or from Greek and japanese mythology. Would of been tight!
Yeah, as soon as I head of Sisyphus, I wanted him to show up in at least one of the cartoons as a Turtle Pal. Also, there's apparently a Sisyphus beetle in real life, so double reference! It'd probably be a bit of an ask, but it would be cool if an edition of TMNTXJL would have updated sprites of the non SNES characters. Just to have them all in one place.
@@emanuelespinoza9325 that would seem to track with what little info of him is on the wiki. Damn shame, because there arent many bug based mutants, let alone beetles, and it's a fun idea.
"See ya in hell!"
"Still pushin' that boulder?"
"Yup!"
He's gotta roll that poop forever
I love how this game mashed up the different iterations of TMNT and used some lesser-known Archie and Mirage characters. Karai was a virtual unknown to most fans in 93, and it wasn't until the 2003 series and onwards she became a regular fixture. Thanks for the great retrospective!
Teenage mutant ninja rattlesnakes are next I feel it!
Yeah that’s pretty cool this game brought Karai into the mainstream.
@@miahthorpatrick1013 warm up on TOURNAMENT FIGHTERS cause it will be out this year soon on all platforms with the TMNT COLLECTION with online play😎😎💯
@@kengoku3498 I bought my Brooks adapter for the snes to practice with my ps4 controller now.
@@belojah2 never thought in a million years that I'll be able to showcase my skills with Aska to the world😃😃💯first day purchase but confused about getting it on Switch or Xbox
After seeing the Turtles in Injustice, it's clear WE NEED A NEW TMNT TOURNAMENT FIGHTERS FOR CURRENT GEN.
I'm dying for that to happen lol.
1992’s “The Art of Fighting” had a “spirit gauge”, which would do a number of things once full such as making fireballs stronger, but you could also spend some of the sprit gauge to use a super move. So that would be the first fighting game with a super meter.
I was about to write this but you beat me to it
That classic Konami Intro never gets old
I got this for the SNES back in the day and used to break my friends' wills to live with Wingnut.
"right off Casey's bat" nice. I also would have accepted 'right off the Jose Canseco bat'.
Hey what are you some sorta punker?
God, I hate punkers.
A Jose Conseco bat? Tell me you didn't pay for that!
@@iangilliam2736 "you gotta know what a crumpet is to understand CRICKET"
Back in these days konami gave us some real bangers
@@Poever my friends and I killed that Tournament Fighters cartridge on the SNES. Also a favourite of mine was metal warriors. Really ahead of it's time that.
Tmnt feels like a slam dunk for franchise to be a fighting game, with all the mutants characters.
And nice with Asuka :eyes:
Art of Fighting actually introduced a special/super meter and desperation move. September 1992 was the release date.
Really? I thought it was Samurai Shodown 1993.
@@joejefferies7209 Same company just different series.
Samurai Shodown had a meter, but originally it only served to make your attacks more powerful when filled (super moves were not introduced in the series until SS 2)
Those are more like Desperation Moves like the ones in Fatal Fury. Yes, AOF has a meter but is used for every special move and you need to charge it manually, doesn't fill with your attacks like a modern meter is. I believe that TMNT is the one that premiered the traditional Super Meter.
AoF's meter is basically a stamina gauge, nothing like TMNT or the SSF2T one.
Aska was actually going to be Mitsu from TMNT 3. You can find this out by the prototype of the game. I believe she was changed into Aska due to TMNT 3 doing poorly.
Yeah I was surprised this wasn't mentioned in the video.
I remember being a kid and seeing the SNES version being played at a Blockbuster gaming tournament.
Blew my lil genesis fanboy mind, started saving that summer for an SNES.
Love your retrospectives and this is another great one. As for your question about the first Super Meter I believe the first game to use one was Art of Fighting in 92, although it did look much rougher than this.
Thanks for the info!
@@MattMcMuscles I believe Samurai Shodown/Spirits was also released before TF
@@opiumized Yes but I'd argue that one doesn't quite count. It's not a resource meter per se, as you cannot consume it using any moves. It just alerts you when your character "enrages" so to speak and is purely timer based in terms of consumption. SS2 had super moves that consumed that meter, however it came out in 1994.
I don't think AoF's meter counts, as it's fundamentally a different type of meter. It's meter was for special moves, not super moves or even enhanced specials. It also refilled differently, as it started out full each round and would rebuild based on time alone, not by building it up using attacks or by taking damage.
Honestly, I think we're overdue for a new TMNT fighting game. Beat em Ups are nice and all, but Tournament Fighters and Injustice have shown there's a lot of untapped potential in having a fighting game set in the Turtle-verse.
Honestly just tweeted how the FGC needs a new TMNT fighting game!
FULLY AGREE!
There actually was a TMNT fighting game for the Nintendo Wii and PlayStation 2 called "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Smash Up", which played similarly to the Super Smash Bros. games in terms of gameplay.
hold your horses ...I need to see a mega man power fighters before we get a new turtle fighting game.
@ how bout both!
I wish they had released a fourth version for Game Boy, simply so all four turtles could be on the cover. Edit: I swear you guys, I posted this comment before I heard Matt say the exact same thing in the video. I promise with all my promise monies.
I believe you
@@michaelwilliams2231 Thank you. That means a lot. I've been struggling with people accusing me of just copying Matt.
Thank you for giving the SNES version its due. Was absolutely one of my favorites. Raphael's spin attack into the German suplex combo was the ultimate cheese against karai
This was one of my favorite games on the system. The cafeteria music, my god the memories
"Did Ninja Turtles have the first Smash Ball?!?"
The character select theme from TF on SNES is my ring tone.
I had that too for a while aha
Neon night riders is mine
As someone who only played the SNES version growing up, I was wondering if I was some Mandela effect victim during the opening summary for the Genesis version. Never knew the two ports were significantly different
I didn't even know they had a Megadrive version, I only ever knew about the SNES version
Yeah I was confused for a second.
From what I've read, the NES version is hard to find in the US and other countries where the NES had wide availability, but is common in developing countries with Famiclones.
@@richardfan7157 Sadly Richard, it's because the NES version released in 1994 and that's the last year North America recieved any nes games as super Nintendo and genesis were long implanted in people's minds for the jew systems to play
I still have the NES version, box and all. Worth a mint because it’s rare. I stand by the fact that the game is a solid tournament fighter for what the NES was capable of.
I like the nes version better
I would love to see an episode like this about World Heroes from SNK. It's one of those fighting games that I fell in love with as a kid because I was obsessed with anything remotely like Street Fighter. I realize it's not as good as I remember it but I still think it's pretty decent.
World Heroes is such an underrated series. It's goofy as all get-out, but that's why it's so much fun.
The SNES version of TMNT tournament fighters is the best version of the game hands down.
That’s not up for debate. What is debatable is if the Japanese or American version of the snes game is the better one.
debated here, characters better in snes for sure, game play and music better on Genesis imo
wish there was just one version with all the characters
smh why is casey fucking jones NES exclusive
@@yurifairy2969 Casey Jones is also in the Genesis version.
amen
I would love to see you do a retrospective on the Mecha Fighting games that Bandai Made "Power Ragners : Fighting Edition" and "Gundam Wing: Endless Duel"
If he talked about Gundam Battle Assault which was basically Gundam Street Fighter I'd lose it lol
Now I want Max to do a boss rage and aim for Karai! XD
I had the SNES game back in the day, always used Donatello with his bo spin attack beat the whole game with it. Still love it
Hey I did the same LOL!
I was the perfect age when this came out, so it and Mortal Kombat were the two games that got the most playtime on my SNES for about a year or so. I had hundreds of TMNT figures, but was just starting to "outgrow" them (I still kept collecting them, but felt too old to play with them anymore), so this game for me was the perfect thing at just the right time.
So excited for more people to give this a watch thanks to the Cowabunga Collection, thank again Matt for everything you've done to help spread the word of Tournament Fighters!
I didn't even notice the kids in the arcade scene of TMNT 1 were playing Double Dribble & Blades of Steel!! 🤣
So all these games are getting rereleased on all current systems along with the tmnt arcade games with online play! Here’s hoping the online is rollback for TMNT Tournament Fighters!
There are rumors that Aska was meant to be the village warrior character from the third live action movie.
Mitsu which found in the files aska was named mitsu orginally before being changed to aska
Great video, the SNES version of this game is still awesome to play even today, this game, MMPR The Fighting Edition & Gundam Wing Endless Duel are 3 of the best 'underrated' fighting games on the SNES imo. :)
I still have this game for my sega genesis. This and the hyperstone heist are legit
Brother, you are truly talented at what you do. Your retrospectives, flophouse files and what happened are highlights of my day when new ones drop. Thank you for this awesome content.
Speaking of over saturation. Let's not forget the "Coming Out of Our Shell Tour". Even as a Turtle fan in the 80s, by this time, I knew this was too much. Yeesh
Including a new female 5th turtle, Venus de Milo! In a sad attempt to expand/pander the market to girls. Ugh!
@@RogeriusRex There were actually 2 Turtles concerts; after "Comin' Out of Our Shells", there was another, lesser one called "Gettin' Down in Your Town", which I never knew about until Phelous reviewed it.
As for Venus, the idea behind her wasn't bad, but the execution of the character and the show was on definitely was. In competent hands, Venus could've worked.
i really like the NES tournament fighters, it's not like a traditional fighting game at all, it's a simple fighter but very addicting
yeah, the NES can do the floor scrolling by detecting each horizontal line being drawn on the screen and doing some scrolling code between each horizontal line. Its how the mist in the Mad Forest level of Castlevania III works
I just want to say that i still genuinely appreciated the TMNT inclusion in Injustice 2. it was such a perfect representation.
Yes, but we deserved Shredder with them.
From a guy who's played all 3 of the TMNT:TF games, absolutely blew this one away. Even if the damage and chip scales are broken af, I enjoy the SNES version most. I also picked up TMNTxJL and was blown away.
What a great episode! I had the Genesis version. My god that game was difficult for my child brain back then. Still a lot of fun and that muffled KO voice from the turtles has echoed in my brain for as long as I can remember.
SHELL SHOCK... :(
I was about to say
a Remix of TMNT Tournament Fighters
of all 3 versions would be nice.
Like all the fighters and stages from the Genesis and Snes ports
with a dash of the Nes mechanic with the Orb ball thing.
I grew up with the Genesis version, but I knew of, and always wanted to play the other two versions as well.
I know the Genesis one is considered the worst, but it captured my imagination with it's unusually dark tone, sometimes haunting music and stage art, and the fact that a normal, human martial artist was more powerful than Krang's android body or a Triceraton warrior. That was just so cool to me!
It also blows my mind that these games may have invented stage transitions and instant replays in fighters.
And hey, since the Cowabunga Collection is hitting every platform this year, I'll finally get to play all of 'em :D
did some research turns out the super meter mechanic was introduced or first used in Samurai Shodown (July 7th 1993.) before TMNT Tournament Fighters (Sep 4 1993). Pretty close in releases, but Samsho was first.
You can't do supers in SamSho1. The Rage meter only increases your damage.
I remember playing random emulated games on my computer and when i found all three games being a huge turtles fan i loved every single one of these games they were awesome also seeing armaggon for the first time on game just for him to be rebooted in the 2012 tmnt universe was a TREAT
I had the SNES version of this game. I never knew the Genesis version was different. It was a pretty fun game and I got a lot of enjoyment playing it with friends back iin middleschool.
I still have the cart, and it's easily one of the best fighting games on the SNES. MAN I LOVE THIS GAME!
Man, I can't believe I live in a timeline where all 3 versions of this game are gonna get rereleased in the same collection
I have conflicted memories of this game. I love this game sooo much but it was the last game my dad bought for me before he unfortunately passed away. This for SNES and Streets of Rage 2 are all I wanted to play after I heard the unfortunate news.
Damn, when I least expect it, Matt pimps more MUGEN on us right at the end, like this whole retrospective was just a build up to tell everyone TMNT v Justice League exists.
ADMIT IT!
Ah yes, the SNES version consumed many a weekend when I was a kid, playing it with my sister. (She'd kick my ass when ever she played Aska... But I still had fun.)
Wow, that I'd never seen the NES port... that looks amazing for the console... looks more like a modern 'throwback' indie game than an actual game that launched on the system.
I was aware of the TMNT CE and it's great so far. Guess there's a more advanced iteration of that in the works?
This video led me down a rabbit hole, I didn't know TMNT x JL existed. Glad I do now, very cool Mugen project.
I loved the attitude of this game. I guess they were going for that teenager demographic because these turls were fierce and the music gave the sense of urgency and seriousness.
Seeing Shredder fighting Leonardo at 14:30 is what Im talking about. They look like they are actually fighting; Like shredder is actually trying to BEAT. HIS. A$$ haha.
Something tells me this video is about to get a LOT more views after the announcement of The Cowabunga Collection.
Damn, now I wanna hear the SNES OST, it really was great! I really liked the sound mixing of that game, had a lot of "omph".
This reminds me how I always wanted a combo counter in TF for the SNES. I used to main Don and Mike.
I’m not saying this is a 10/10 game, but it’s crazy how many people dismiss it as “just some cheap Street Fighter clone”. This game is awesome, way better than it’s reputation. An underrated gem for sure.
Shame the same couldnt be said for the Genesis version..
@@yuvraj01 Yeah, that game is pretty rough compared to the SNES version.
SNES port was friggin amazing
I remember I got the SNES version for my birthday back when I was a young lad in 1994. Still holds up!
Thank you for this, Matt. Was just telling someone about how joyful it was playing these back then.
I still have the SNES version to this day. I only beat the tournament with Shredder once last year, and I still haven’t figured out how to master the special moves aside mashing buttons! It’s a great game with a gorgeous OST, with my favorite being the theme that plays for the Rat King fight.
After seeing the reveal trailer for the “Cowabunga Collection” that video brought me here. Well done Matt! I played the living hell out of the Genesis version as a child but later on would experience the SNES version. Much later though, I wound up paying a pretty penny for a copy of the NES version that I found at a retro game store in NYC & it was best $200 I ever spent for a complete copy as rare as it is.
As a fighting game enthusiast, I spent a lot of time with each version analyzing the differences and what were the best strategies for winning matches (& believe me it varies as you know). I just find each version so fascinating not just because they are fighting games but just the fact that they are really the only games that are “ports” for multiple consoles but they don’t even feel like it, they feel like their own games with their own merits. Even each game has their own storylines (albeit short and simple ones none the less).
With this all said, I stand hopeful that the “Cowabunga Collection” may make small alterations for these games (like make the bosses playable or simple tutorials for newer players for example). I’m probably asking too much for an HD collection of 11 games though lol!
Ultimately though, I want a remake of Tournament Fighters done by today’s fighting game
standards though. That would be a sight to see! Maybe combining all the best elements of all 3 Versions of the game’s storylines would make it a nice touch. I really see, only 3 companies taking this on, Nearherrealm (whole have already included the Turtles as DLC in Injustice 2 so I feel like there is a leg up there), Namco/Bandai or Capcom as long as their is a focused and devoted team of developers who are willing to take the old and mix it with the new. Who knows though, we will only wait and see what the future holds. :)
TMNT Tournament Fighters on SNES is the REAL version imo, the Sega Genesis & NES are just cheap knock offs for the lesser systems. The SNES version is a true gem! One of the best Ninja Turtles game AND one of the best fighting games of the 90s. on par with Street Fighter, better imo
Even though i put more time into the genesis version, the time i spent with the snes version was just more fun in general. Not just because of the aesthetics but also because the gameplay felt much more satisfying since "combos" don't really exist in the genesis version.
Very happy to see a TMNT TF Genesis tech expert in the comments. Hope you are doing well and thanks for your awesome videos!
13:03 Art of Fighting was the very first. It's from 1992
Also Samurai Shodown
@@jon1580 Those are meters but not SUPER meters like we are used to. In Samsho only increases your damage, and AOF's meter is used for every special move and you have to manually charge it, the "super moves" are more like the DM in Fatal Fury. I believe that TMNT TF has the badge of the first fighting game with a traditional super meter.
I grew up playing TMNT on SNES. It's still very fun to play to this day and Cyber Shredder is my favorite character. Their is a reason why the game still has a, albeit very small, tournament scene.
I had the SNES version and freaking loved it!
That Konami logo was one of the defining sounds of my childhood. So many absolute bangers on the SNES started with that sound.
You'll be surprised how tight and fluid TMNT TF in NES, lack of rosters and lack of depth make it less interesting, other than that, control, pixel, and music are awesome 😁👍
I had the Genesis version as a kid. I loved the dark tone to it and the weird eldritch style of the stages.
I really enjoyed this video. I loved the Mega Drive version, but it was just a weekend rental with some friends back in the day. I'm shocked there were two other version and I never heard about them.
Got curious on any Super Meters before SNES Tournament Fighters and found out that Art of Fighting (1992) had a gauge that depletes whenever certain moves are used.
Wow great clips used throughout... can tell you’re a huge TMNT fan! And that cross over is so sick... wow, need to check that out. Thank goodness for the community!
I have a vague memory of this game. I remember seeing it being played at someone's house when I was a little kid and I remember the shark character a bit, but I never got a chance to pick up and play it. Might have to find a SNES and track down the game.
In the SNES/Super Famicom Tournament Fighters, all 4 turtles had roughly four voices lines. For whatever reason, each turtle has 2 'lighter voice lines' and 2 more 'growly lines'. In the Super Famicom version all 4 of their voice lines were the lighter tone.
I absolutely loved and still love this game on SNES! I think I regard it as a much better game than most, but oh well. Great memories of playing it with friends as a kid on Friday nights.
I loved the SNES version as a kid. But TMNT is seriously one of my favorite things in life - still like 30 years later.
I only ever got to play the Genesis version and yeah, it was hard. Casey Jones was also OP with those damn bombs.
I love the 2nd 90s movie secret of the ooze I've literally seen it over 10 times or more.
Very fond memories of playing this on the SNES.
I actually think the sprites are really good especially the turtles
The time is so ripe to bring this game back into the spot light with a modern update. Power Rangers BftG has freaking Street Fighter characters crossing over into it, the nostalgia hype is REAL.
I had the SNES version as a kid. I was bummed out because i thought it would be like turtles in time instead of a fighting game. Still had some great times with this game playing with my friends and drawing the instrunction booklet art, never could beat Karai though.
I love SNES tf. Thanks for this. I didn’t even know of the other two versions!
I had it, I played the hell out of it and I have no regrets.
Not the Genesis version though.
Wow, I feel kinda shortchanged having only gotten to play the Sega version as an 8 year old. Those stage transitions looked dope though, I don't even remember seeing that happen. Though I'm glad to hear that my doing so poorly in it really was because it just had really weird design choices, lol.
Also, that MUGEN mashup looks amazing, I'm totally going to get my friends in on it.

Kentaro Miura, rest in peace.
Looks like I found my game to play on Fangame Friday.
The SNES version was my jam when I was a kid. I actually didn't know there were other versions, it was really cool to see them.
I often put the snes TF ost, when I’m drawing to this day, it is an amazing Soundtrack!
Killer episode. Love your content. Thank you for for putting out such entertaining videos.
Been meaning to play these really soon... grew up with it on the snes at some point. Honestly pretty memorable and felt like a real challenge to finish!
The NES version has the best soundtrack I have ever heard in a game, period.
I love the Third Strike gag. Never stop using it!
I believe you're right! TMNT TF introduced stages transitions. Power Instinct (Goketsuji Ichizoku) is the oldest fighting game with transitions that I can think of and that was NOVEMBER 1993. By the way, on the meter thing, SamSho1's Rage meter was only for increased damage (supers were added until 2), and Art Of Fighting's Spirit gauge was used for EVERY special move and has to be charged manually by holding down a button; the "supers" were more like Desperation Moves that could only be done when your life was low. So TF can have that badge of honor too, the first fighting game with a traditional super meter.
Love the shout out to Aska's stage. Love that theme.
If TF had just included Usagi Yojimbo in the SNES version it would have been the complete package. It's still so good though.
Samurai Shodown was the first fighting game with a super meter
Actually, it was Art of Fighting.
As a collector of game boy fighting games I would have LOVED a game boy port of this. 🤩
Yeah I have weird tastes. 🤣
I always thought that both TMNT: Tournament Fighters for SNES and Genesis were continuing from the beat em' up titles before (Turtles in Time for SNES and Hyperstone Heist on the Genesis). In Turtles in Time, Krang blows up in his ship, so he wouldn't be in the SNES version of Tournament Fighters, and in Hyperstone Heist, you get that Shredder Actually hit the ground when he falls from a great height (something that's not confirmed in Turtles in Time) so Shredder wouldn't be in the Genesis version.
