    I appreciated your comments regarding quality and price of equipment varying by homeowner. The other part people forget about is the size of the task. If your trimming can be done in 5 minutes, you can get away with something cheap, but if you need to trim 2000 sq ft house with a fence line that surrounds an acre, you're going to need something more beastly. If you have a corner lot with public sidewalk, like yours, you need a dedicated edger. If you only have 8 feet of walkway to your front porch, using a trimmer on it's side is probably fine.

    Young homeowner here and I love you mentioning equipment… sometimes ya gotta use what you have… I’m a prime example… started with a push mower and a blower, then got a riding mower, then a weed whacker, then a blade edger… each season I’m able to pick up a new or nice/used piece of equipment… Overtime, I’ve built up a nice little setup… and I’ve got neighbors that are more established and they have always let me borrow a piece of equipment and help me along the way… I look forward to being able to pay it forward someday

    I switched over to all electric lawn tools about 10 years ago - first to greenworks - slightly underpowered- and now at our new house upgraded to all ego tools - so much more power. Love the convenience of the electric tools - no smell and don’t have to buy and store gas anywhere also less maintenance and it starts every time.

    I bought a reel mower, added golf course sand to level yard but no stripes. I mow at less than an inch and grass is zoysia. Yard looks fantastic after firing TruGreen and started using your tips. I put .057 oz of Celsius (10 times annual amount) killed the weeds and too much sand set the grass back a month but fully recovering. Thanks for all your videos and support.

    My wife has had this corded B&D weed whacker as long as I’ve known her. She doesn’t even know where she got it. I didn’t bother to weed whack at our old place but since we moved I’m trying to up my game. It actually works all right! It’s a little annoying to drag a cord around for this and our corded blower but, they both start on zero pulls, and no batteries to deplete, so there’s that.

    I have a Honda HRX. Regarding concrete to grass edges, I notch my mower down a half setting on one side only (example 2” to 1.5”). I then mow all my edges along the driveway and street with the low side on the concrete side. This to me puts a nice slight bevel towards the concrete. It’s very subtle but I think it gives a nice finished smoother look on the grass to concrete edges. Try it sometime with your Honda. I think it looks sharp as long as you only go down a half inch.

Within about five years between trading I am buying in pawnshops a thrift store repairing I'm now on a nice BG 50 steel blower, a steel edger ,The Honda mower that you have , A Shindaiwa string trimmer, and a Stihl chainsaw and echo Edger but with all that my lawn sucks it's kind of dead I may have to seed or sod the whole lawn But since I'm on a really tight budget almost 0 LOL got to do what you Gotta do Thanks for everything love the videos

    Here is my “pro tip” for anyone else skimming the comments. I have a TTTF lawn and I cut it at 2.5” in Fall and early Spring. When I put my mower on the sidewalk (one side as in the video) and mow my edges it cuts a little too low so I bump up my two wheels on the sidewalk up two notches and my edges are crisp and even. 👍🏼

    Weed eat, blow out beds, edging, driveway and sidewalk, mow, edge, blow.
    Helps keep and larger leaves and yard debris in the lawn area to be mulched by the mower. Not very many stolons traveling across the sidewalks because I usually redirect them back into the lawn during the midweek mow.

  • @predsfan7775
    @predsfan7775 5 лет назад +1

    Edge first, trim, mow, then blow. If you happen to mash down the edge when you mow you can fix it really quick and easy when you blow it off. Also walk to the left when you trim so that your cutting on the pull stroke and pulling the debris into the yard instead of pushing it into the beds.

    Some lawns especially in hilly terrain it isn't possible to hang your wheels outside because the driveway or patio or whatever is quite a lot taller than the ground that the grass is growing on, so I usually see people turf line the tops of the edges and keep their wheels of the inside to get that even look.

    I hope you will see this question!
    We have rebuild our lawn completely end of last year (oct 2018). Over the winter has the lawn grown and it grew so mutch that the grass isn't now normal gras. It's more like a hard stick in the middle and the grass is growing from the sides (I hope my english is clear enough). Now my question:
    How can i fix my lawn that it isn't this hard anymore. Should I mowe it as low as possbile or is there an other technique? I can send you an image over facebook if it helps more to answer the question.
    Thank you and greetings from Switzerland!

    When weed wacking,your weed trimmer spins counter clockwise so you trim in the direction that throughs the clippings towards the lawn not the landscape.Second find a mower that you can adjust the wheels indepently so if you have edged landscape (not concrete edge) you can drop one side down in the dirt edge without scalping the grass as you go around,then adjust back level.

    I don’t know how to get grass to grow in my front yard where I have these known conditions.
    1. Very old large tree. Try and keep low branches trimmed off to allow more light.
    2. On a downward slope, probably around 35 degrees
    3. Clay soil.
    I tried to take some plugs from shady part of yard where grass is growing and plugged them around tree. The grass is growing where I put the plugs, but never spreads after 3 years.
    If I apply seeds, they just wash downhill when it rains.
    This area probably needs dirt since topsoil has mostly eroded away. But it eventually just gets washed downhill also.
    I’m on a very limited budget and don’t have extra money to throw at the problem.

    Allyn, a somewhat unrelated question - In some of your other videos when you are removing your mower blades so that you can sharpen them you use a lawn mower stand that holds the front end of the lawn mower up to give you easier access to the blades. I have been trying to find a lawn mower stand like that one, but I cannot seem to find one. Did you fabricate your own lawn mower stand or did you buy it somewhere? If you bought it would you please provide a link for your lawn.mower stand so that I and others can see if it will meet our needs too? Thanks for this video and the info requested, Allyn.

    Obviously no criticism just a LCN observation about your edge. You have some areas that are seen in your video where you'll notice that you have some stress happening along your curb line. My guess is that you are cutting just a smidgen lower on your edge-pass when you hang your outside wheels off the turf. Personally I like the taper but that might be a drawback when that edge gets a little ahead of the rest of the lawn. If you want to get crazy you could raise up the outside wheels on your edge pass only - But that might be too nutty!?

    LCN- I am a buy once, cry once type of guy. I have my Honda HRM215 with the GX commercial engine. Bought new in 2001 paid $700ish. Mow season in Utah is March through end of November or December, mowing 2 times per week for the last 8 years, only once a week prior to then. Been a solid mower, but parts are getting hard to come by now. Wish they still made this model as it is super light weight but powerful. I would buy another in a heart beat! Alas Honda no longer makes it. The most comparable mower is the HRC 216. That will be my mower of choice. I have used the HRX's on my lawn and I just can't stand the auto choke. Also the HRX 190 engine sounds like a cheap mower compared to the Honda GX engines. Again, cry once because the HRC's are over a grand!
    I edge, weed whack, blow, then Mow. After the mow, I edge again, then blow. I only weed whack every 2 weeks. And this year I have been edging every 2 weeks as well. Blower is a Stihl BG85 that I bought in 2005. That thing gets used more than the edger and weed wacker combined!

      agree, a good blower is a very important piece of the strategy. My dad has a BG85 that is also over 10 years old and it runs like the day it was new. he only buys Stihl whereas I am an Echo guy. I like the old Hondas too.

    PODCAST QUESTION: I have annual bluegrass(POA) that comes up every year in my back yard and I can’t seem to figure out how keep it from coming up even with my pre emergent and my post emergent weed killer won’t kill it. What’s the best way to eliminate it from my lawn ?

    • @aguyandhiscomputer
      @aguyandhiscomputer 5 лет назад

      - bag when the seeds are present
      - thicken the existing lawn

    As far as cheap equipment and top of the line equipment goes, its like my mentor always said "a tool is only as good as the man using it ". I could go into detail of what that quote means but I'll let the lawn care nut handle that one.
