There are fake geek girls, and there are fake geek boys. There's also a hierarchical ladder in geek circles, which is why geeks question your geekness when they meet you. It's not necessarily because they don't believe you're a geek, it's to see where you fit on the ladder from them. You can chat all day with me about Dragonlance, Star Wars and Star Trek, but if you talk Dr. Who with me, I'm barely going to be able to keep up with the conversation, and when the topic turns to Harry Potter I have nothing at all to contribute. That's just how things work.
I tend to think 'fake geeks' are people who demand change in a medium (comics, games, TV, table top games, whatever) and don't seem to really like the show/game/book at all, and keep demanding more change when they get their way.
My enthusiasm for Far Cry 5 dimmed a bit when I learned that you "get to" customize your character--like decide if you're male or female, skin color, etc. Which means in order to accommodate the SJW set, Ubisoft is giving up the idea of giving us a real character in a real story with romance and adventure. I'm still excited about the game, but not as much as I was.
Eh, you could be right there, but I still think it's more to do with SJW than RPG (I hate the forced RPG mechanics, too; I'm loving AC: Origins but that's my least favorite part). After all the shit the FC games have gotten for being (gasp!) stories about men (and about the roles of men of color etc.), I find it hard to believe there isn't at least some pressure in that direction that made them make this decision. Either way it's disappointing, because it means there won't be any romantic subplot or sex in the game, and the character is likely to be more feminized because some people may play as women. I'm still eager to play it and excited about it, but I know for sure it's not going to beat FC3 as my favorite game of all time.
Literally no guy has ever called me a "fake geek girl." In fact, when I'm in a public setting, and I'm talking about geeky things, I get nothing but compliments and enthusiasm from guys! My husband tells me that guys tell him "you have a great girl there!" almost all of the time. If this is a problem that exists, then I sure don't know anything about it, because I've had the opposite experience. Even to the girls who DO get called that: Welcome to any subculture. People get called posers all of the time because everything eventually becomes a competition. It's not a gendered attack at all. This is a really dumb thing to get so worked up about. lol.
Most girls I know who happen to be geeky are real geeks, but I do know one girl who really is a fake geek girl. She pretended to like anime just because her boyfriend did and worse, she was very dismissive of the idea of cosplay. I don't know why he dated her
Yep. Poseurs and pseuds can exist in everything. Elitism can also be annoying, but basic gatekeeping and demands that people be genuine isn't exactly 'gatekeeping'.
especially when the possers have become an infestation that takes over the thing you've enjoyed your entire life, tries to change it to fit their needs, and force you out of the fandom because they still think you're nerdy weirdo. And they wonder why nerd are so hostile towards fake nerds.
kyriss12 exactly, so many feminist have tried to change things I love so it fits their agenda and they usually make fun of the fans.(I'm a female btw) Its like nerd culture gets "culturally appropriated".
All the popular people online were the talented, the geeks, and the pornstars. When the online world became the centerpiece of real world popularity women like this all had the same thought, "I want to be popular but I can't really do anything and I don't want to show myself naked... I know, I'll be one of those geeknerds!"
This video triggered a nerd rage I had long held in. It made me think of Pokemon go. Suddenly pokemon, and specifically gen 1 when the rage first started, had mainstream appeal to adults who acted like they were the biggest fans ever of a franchise they hadn't touched in over a decade. I would discuss Pokemon with people and all they knew was ash and charizard... Fucking idiots couldn't even hold a conversation about a franchise they literally had a game for in their hands. I made a map of Kanto to from memory just to prove I could and I calmed down but honestly I just want to go back to being an outcast for the stupid shit I have no reason to know as well as I do.
Yeah, me too. It got even worse when they started schooling me on team mystic and/or team valor, thinking that those are the only teams, and then get confused when I bring up team magma or team flare. UnCUltuRED SwInES
So many good points. I've been in the gamer and comic geek life for many many years. I've never seen anyone not wanting women involved. We trip over ourselves to get them. What we don't like are be looked down on by those women, being taken advantage of.
Mark W yeah. They're usually the one's who want to be let in even if they don't like it and then try to change things to fit they're wants. Then they make fun of actual fans.
You want to meet a group of individuals that will declare you a "fake fan" and try to "intimidate" you? Go to anything related to the HP Fandom and say that Hermione isn't the best character of the series and/or that Ron was your favorite character.
Yup - it's easy for a true geek to call that shit out. I remember after the JJ-Star Trek came out, a couple gals telling me they're trekkies ... Oh Wow - right !! Ask them Anything about Any Trek series or Movies prior to JJ and they of-course have no idea what the hell you're talking about .... Same goes for Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica, Marvel, DC, LotR, Blade Runner, etc....
Even if you're like not that knowledgable in a fandom, as long as you're polite and do have interest, people are still going to be welcoming unless it's something like Dota because you not knowing what to do is a death sentence there because it affects their game.
how do you count life gains putting you above 20? how would you cope with a soul/essence warden, chronozoa and paradox haze combo? also no need for any life counters when you run a bogardan hellkite/dragonstorm or stuffy doll/guilty conscience deck ;)
Yeah I laugh whenever I spot one of these people, the fake geek guys and fake geek girls. They just come off as controlling and policing and it drives me crazy. Especially when they complain about skimpy clothes, I mean what do they want? Do they want people want them to wear burkas or something? Would that appease you? The beauty of art is the fact that you can ignore and not consume the art you don't like. I don't go into fandoms of rom coms and demand they throw in some sexy super models sporting daisy dukes and Michael Bay explosions. So why are you allowed to do it ? Love this video great job. Also 8:58 you don't get to demand respect from me. I'm not going to immediately act like a jackass towards you if I've just met you and don't know you, but that doesn't mean I have to give you my respect either right off the bat. I prefer to be neutral unless you give me a reason to swing either way.
We went through this in the punk scene in the early 90s. All of the sudden all the jock assholes who used to try to beat up my guy friends, who picked on them/us and called us "dirty punkers," etc., are listening to Nirvana (ugh) and acting like they're so punk rock, man, they've been totally into punk for years. F off you poseur shithead.
In your mind, what is the biggest sin against the subculture? A: Being a Filthy Casual B: Being a Console Peasant C: Being a Fake Geek D: Being a Feminist
You know, in my 20+ years of being in the geek/gaming fandom, I've never seen any instance of this (inb4 "hur dur anecdotal evidence"). Every circle, group, or guild I've been in has always been welcoming of people who enjoy the thing and willing to help out newcomers regardless of gender. The only time I've seen people get upset is when you have someone who's toxic like this who comes in and tries to be divisive. Also issues are with PuGs and public lobbies, but even then it's just a bunch of shitposters and low energy trolling.
When I was young it was sad to be a nerd, because it was for people who did not have anything else. They literally escaped the real world into comics and games. Speaking of games, back then geek boys were the only people who even knew computer games existed. Now it's different, everyone is playing games so I don't get how it's "special" to say that you are a gamer. That being said, I don't think anyone can "own" some subculture like gaming. We didn't think we were part of a subculture, we just were playing games and ignoring the real life, including girls. Which again is only sad, there is nothing cool about being a nerd.
Paul Pekkarinen yeah, same for my my dad. He was short for a boy(most of the family on his side are little, like me) and he had a single mom(and sister), and lived in Delaware(in a small farming town) so he didn't really have much in common with the other kids which were farmer's sons. He likes sports, but comics and fantasy novels were his main interest.
I completely agree with you about the tee-shirts. I am 36 and I work in China as an English teacher, and I find it very amusing how many people I see almost every day wearing either a Nirvana or ACDC tee-shirt here. Most young people in the USA barely know who these bands are/were, but because they sell these shirts at "The Gap" here, people buy them.
I found this video by accident. The music from Croc: Legend of The Gobos grabbed my attention. Your intelligent arguements earned my subscription. Keep up the good work.
Because of what I do for a living, I often attend SFF or comics conventions, and I often end up going by myself (like when my husband can't get time off work or our kids have plans for that weekend or whatever). I love doing these and going to cons in general (I've been a fan of SFF/comics/etc. for years), but at first I was a little nervous about going by myself--not scared, just worried I'd spend the whole weekend alone. But I realized something at that first con; a little trick that worked, and has worked every single time. My first night at the show, right after I get there and get settled in and everything, I head down to the bar and look for a small, nice-looking* group of guys. (*By "nice-looking" I mean they look like nice people; I don't care about their appearance otherwise.) I walk up to them and introduce myself. I tell them I'm there by myself and would they mind if I hung out with them for a bit. Not one group has EVER said no. Not one group has EVER made me feel uncomfortable, or like they look down on me because I'm a girl, or like I don't belong there or like I'm not welcome. Not ONE. They're always friendly, happy to make friends, happy to include me in their group. (And I don't think it has anything to do with being a cute blonde, either, because none of them have ever made any sort of moves on me or anything like that.) Not ONE has ever made any kind of issue about my being female or "quizzed" me, either. Not ONE has ever made me feel unsafe in any way. [Of course, that may have something to do with the fact that I don't walk up to them expecting them to worship me because I'm--gasp!--a *girl,* deigning to speak to them, because of course as men at a comics/SFF con they must be total losers who never get to speak to real females in their everyday life (which I honestly suspect may be part of the issue with girls like Pink Hair up there).] You know who I would never try this with? I'd never try it with a group of women, especially not women like Pink Hair. She doesn't look like she'd be at all friendly or welcoming to another girl looking to make friends, frankly; she looks like a girl who sees other girls as competition. Like she'd maybe say sure, hang out with us, and then spend the rest of the evening trying to cut me down or exclude me. Men *never* do that. I honestly have no idea where this chick is getting the idea that women aren't welcome at shows. I suspect it comes from the "aren't you grateful I'm here" attitude she probably exudes from every pore, or maybe from the fact that rather than enjoy comics and games she wants to analyze them to make sure they meet some ridiculous SJW standard. Maybe she just has a chip on her shoulder. Maybe, instead of just looking to make some nice friends to hang out with, she's trying to attach herself to the biggest "name" she can find in hope of gaining more cred. I don't know. All I know is that I've honestly never met a guy at any show or con who thinks women don't belong there or thinks I'm "fake" or that I'm not a "real fan." Quite the opposite, actually. IME guys are way more likely to extend a welcoming hand than women are. I never worry about being alone at shows anymore, because thanks to the many wonderful, friendly, fun, and smart guys there, I know I will always be made welcome. Sorry this was so long!
I have never been treated nicer by guys than when I pretended to be be a girl in WoW. Like wtf is this chick talking about? If she actually knew anything this chick (and most others) can probably become rich off of WoW scams.
If Fake Geek Girl is what wrings a persons undies, then I'd love to talk about the ridicule and aggressiveness I've seen and experienced in my life time. Calling someone fake is like mean glare, not an act of existential violence against a person that likely suggests it's all "a construct".
I find this "I'm a geek/nerd" fashion these days so funny. I am in my early 50's so to go back to my teens you have to go back 40 years, to the late 70's and early 80's. Being a nerd back then sure wasn't a fashion and sure was not trendy. But now a days it's just "chic" to be nerd or geek. It's really funny. Also on the subject of the girls cosplaying in those sexy costume, please you are not a nerd or a geek. They are just attention seekers who enjoy having pics taken of them in convention halls by a bunch of horny little 20 or 30 something boys. Everyone is a gamer these days, everyone is a geek because they play League Of Legend or Clash Of Clan on IPhone or Android. Everyone is a nerd because they saw a Pokemon video on RUclips. It's so funny to see how hard try to be nerds.
I’ve been in lots of different comic and gaming fandoms for about 10 years. In college I was the only girl in my gaming club and no one ever accused me of being a fake geek girl because I could keep up with and contribute to conversations about whatever games we were talking about or playing.
Like what you like and just be honest about what you like, I consider myself a geek about certain things (starwars, Harry potter, you know the basics) but I don't know anything about Pokemon or comics, so why would I pretend to?
Nobody needs permission to enjoy a thing. I get it that sometimes women may feel excluded or burdened with expectations, but it's not what she pretends. Every nerd I've ever known as a friend WANTS more women involved. They WANT to find romance within their communities but ALSO they just... like women?! I know right. Weird. Men like the company of women even WITHOUT sexual prospects and ALSO enjoy sharing their hobbies. Being "interrogated" over a subject may just well be an attempt at flirting by trying to find a shared passion! Not an attempt to prove you don't belong! And when people DO try to check your nerd cred? So what! In my community we have a BUNCH of "lore nerds" We also have a bunch of people that don't give a shit and just like hanging out, or gaming, or casually participating. It's not a competition unless you make it a competition. (one of the guys at my DnD table ALWAYS questions me. I'm the DM, but he will argue with me over rules. 1) the rules are what I say they are, it's my game :P and 2) he's never yet proven me wrong. I don't take it personally, even if it is annoying) Now, there IS an area where I feel women DO face different treatment. That is not because men are monsters. It's PRECISELY because men are desperate not to offend. I see it CONSISTENTLY. My guys will switch mode to be less abrasive, less confrontational, less edgy. We'll be implying accusations about rape, murder or pedophilia to each other, being as AWFUL as we can think of.... then a female newcomer will join and people will dial it back. Tread on eggshells. Is it always fair? No. Women can join in the crack too. But is ALWAYS advisable though. Men are raised with this shit and understand it. Women don't seem to get it until they've lived in "male spaces" for long enough. It's simply SAFER to treat women more carefully. Even women I've known that DO develop a thick enough skin can get upset sometimes. I often think that they simply don't register how awful guys are to each other and believe they're being singled out. Best we can do is show some empathy and encourage them. Men and women aren't the same. Hell, individuals aren't the same. Learning boundaries is a key part of building a community. As you say, the fear mongering of the fake-gamers is helping nobody. It's simply school bullying brought back to an adult environment.
lol, I used to have to ask my bf if I was accidentally sporting an obscure geek chic reference I didn't get because on more than one occasion I was accused of being fake simply because I was drawn to a great piece of art (but didn't know it's origins) ... :)
Tbh, as someone who made anime a huge part of their life, I do "question" people when I meet them and they say they are fans, too. I want to learn what shows they watch and what they think about them, because that plays into how much we'll get along. And if people do that to me because they do not believe I, who happens to be a girl, can be a fan, I actually enjoy proving them otherwise. Because they instantly change their behavior afterwards, and become really interesting conversational partners once they see that you know what you are talking about. People should just stop taking everything so personally. Just because you're interests lie in the same field, does not mean you'll get along with every single other fan.
Goddamnit I hate Manic Panic. I think that makes me an elitist (though I try not to be the pompous ass type). Let me 'splain, used to be (back when I was Skep's age) if you saw someone, chick or dude, with freaky colored hair, it meant that they were a fellow freak, choose your flavor, metal, punk, goth, what have you. It meant that, most likely, I could, as you mentioned in the video, have a conversation with them, we probably had something in common. And now it's a giant flashing warning sign to keep the fuck away from them. I guess on the up side, it's improving my misanthropy level.
hahaha fuk yeah!! I love your videos so much ahahah fkn pwnd. You truly are ruthless and I love every minute of it. And the fact that her whole room/set up is peptobysmol pink is really nauseating. 14:12 I touch about this in my video about being a female gamer/ It's SO hypocritical. I have been so lucky that I am a female playing video games. One time a good friend helped me / farmed an epic flying mount with me in WoW. They were 5k back in Burning Crusade if I remember right. You think he would've done that for a dude? I don't fkn think so. When you are a female and are even half as interested into something, you get super encouraged and accepted; This is what bothers me about this whole narrative. If they were true gamers or w/E they would KNOW this.
"It's hard to be a female in geek culture." Yeah, she obviously has never played Warcraft as a female. They definitely get all the help, positions in guilds, positions in raids, and even gold!
"You truly are ruthless and I love every minute of it." Like a massage to my brain :) And this calm sarcastic as fuck voice. And a cute perfect little nose. And that sudden smile done ever so slightly. We need to clone her :). I'd take two :)
Also I am getting flashbacks of cringing at Olivia Munn on Attack of the Show who totally faked her way into stardom, and had super cringe moments like calling a Black Cat Cosplayer Storm because she had white hair, and claiming to be a Trekky and when her cohost asked her which Star Trek she liked she paused... and said the one on their channel...
This makes me feel old and sad. Back in my time the concept of something like a "geek girl" was so outlandish we gladly would have taken even the fake ones. ;) People really should start to appreciate in what an awesome and exciting world we are living in right now. Früher war alles schlechter! :)
Maxiplus Zwei too bad a lot of those "fake geek girls" either join because its cool or so they can change and ruin things to fir their agenda while not actually liking it in the first place and make fun of actual fans when they get the push back they created.
You know how in caricatures of these overly sensitive "BE NICE TO EVERYONE ALWAYS" people they are often drawn in some little princess style, pillow-walled (is that how it's called?) rooms? Well no exaggeration needed here, I can almost see her sitting on that bed, whispering to her "little tea-party buddies" about how world just doesn't accept them and how they only have each other. I know your "how old are you" comment wasn't serious, but it all really does look childish as fuck.
Padded rooms. :-) (Just trying to be helpful, because you asked. No insult intended at all.) And yeah, that's how I picture this chick, too. There are a few comments above about how it's actually easier to be a girl in gaming etc., because guys are so nice and helpful to you. The commenters above think that this girl has never really been part of the culture or played games at all, because if she was/had she would know that. While I agree it's likely she's never really played games/read a comic/etc., it's also possible that she's just one of those people (who tend to be female IME) for whom nothing is ever good enough, that if men aren't kissing her butt and hers alone 24/7 they're being meeeean or exclusionary, and she honestly doesn't "see" the nice things they're doing for her because she's so self-centered that it wouldn't be enough if they literally opened a vein for her and died at her feet. Or a combination of the two. :-)
Glad Nightminds got me into Everyman. I am in awe of this channel. It bolsters the notion that criticism isn't a bad thing. Comicbook womenfolk have been given a special status locally I noticed the local Comic Shop seemed to go out of their way to hire them. So jelly of my female friend who got hired there.
As a "girl gamer" I've never experienced any sexism within the gaming communities and Fandom I'm in. Usually when I join people's parties and they hear my voice they just say like " hey, you're play a good "insert character/role" and we carry on. It's not the 80s or whenever nerd culture was more so male. No one gives a shit about your gender just have fun
I know of a girl that is a part of some of the fandoms that I am in... she doesn't look good to me, at all. However, we do have a lot of talks about those things and have even exchanged or loaned material of those things. We use to be really good friends, hell, we more or less saw each other more like siblings, so when a person asked why aren't we dating, both of us were confused by the concept. With that I can certainly say, looks were of little to no concern when it came to us being friends and accepting of others that were also part of those fandoms. Often, if we were "quizzing" each other, it was to get another person's perspective on something, or we couldn't recall it ourselves.
I think she has a point about different levels of fans, but that doesn't include the people that Tony Harris was talking about. He was literally referring to women that are paid to cosplay. Either by a company, or through other means like patreon. People that choose costumes based on what they think will get them the most attention. Which is absolutely true and documented that women and men alike decide to retire their costumes when people stop taking as many photos of them. He was mad that they walk around the floor and get people following them in huge groups and they often end up blocking the artist's tables. There's nothing wrong with just liking the films if you're up front about it around comic fans. Most people would rather give you reqs to get you into comics than shit on you if you're open about being curious. You said women don't deserve respect they earn it then later said men deserve respect. I get what you mean but might want to proof read for those inconsistencies. Like "people deserve individual consideration. Not blanket respect."
Okay I will listening womens I will listening ThyNameIsSkepticism I will listening Aydin Paladin I will listening Tree of Logic How many womans I need write down which i am listening to? Because list is pretty long :-]
Amen to everything you said. I wish other people would stop acting like a nerd or geek if they are not truly one. These people think its a competion while real geeks and nerds are out enjoying the stories and games they love. I'm sorry your community has to deal with this.
Yes - this is where the issue gets to . People who are not naturally gravitated toward an interest, such as Comic Books or Science fiction, gets built by people who are fans of the subject material. Outsiders see from afar - the fun and excitement a group of people are having in that interest, now come into that domain and demand change because they don't accept the culture it created within itself.
Dear god make it stop, I know it's not her fault, but her voice is like nails on a fucking chalkboard. I literally start feeling ill every time she speaks. (not you ThyNameIsSkepticism the pink haired dying cat x.x)
I go out of my way to me nice to women on xbox live so they keep playing even the one that lack skill I try to teach tips and tricks but hes they have this pink moptops outlook I avoid them like the plague. I love you work TheNameIsSkepticism
11:50 If looks are women's value in "geekery," why the fuck would anyone care about frauds? Isn't she contradicting herself there? The whole point is that sometimes women come into a fandom and soak up attention for being an attractive woman *who is a fan,* while not really being a fan
Not related to this vid at all...but giiirrrrll! You are such a natural beauty! Your skin and hair is #GOALS! Wish i looked half as beautiful with make up as you do without.... not only that but i could listen to your opinions all day! Keep slaying girl! Mwah! X
"If it's just wearing a shirt with a bands logo on it..." Coworker: "Oh, you like Bauxhaus?" Me: "What?" Her: "Your shirt." Me: "What about it?" Her: "It's the Baushaus logo." Me: "I've had this shirt for a decade and have literally never heard of that band ever." Seriously, I do not know why I have this shirt at all.
Somebody doesn’t know real metal, Ghost hate is pretty cliche and it’s ridiculous when they don’t realize that Ghost is done in classic style of heavy metal.
Monkey Island? You are a fan of Monkey Island? I’m guessing there is a newer version or something but wow I played the crap out of that game in like... the mid 90s. Let’s be friends now I guess.
I'm struck by the idea that geekery is something that's chosen by most men within said geekery. I would posit that it usually is not. There's usually not a choice.
So salty Haha :D Totally agree, as a Heavy metal and game fan I have never had anything other than love from guys in the culture, they are thirsty for genuine female fans and for real, it's a lot of admiration for nothing :P
I am personally not really into the fandom or community aspect of gaming and comics, I mostly play single player games and read comics that I enjoy for mostly personal enjoyment. Because of this more loner nature the fake geek girls are not much of an issue, except when the get hired on at comic companies to write stories, do art for, and even edit comics when they clearly do not love the titles nor characters they are using in their stories. Because there is no love there, they just destroy the characters and the titles and the companies, and everything they stand for. I would be alright with new characters and titles that these people can create, but the push, especially at Marvel right now seems to be higher women and "minorities" for some meaningless diversity quotas that have the right politics, and let them destroy everything the fans once loved, while creating nothing. That annoys me to no end. :/
I’ve been to lots of comic cons...and I’ve never felt left out cause I was a woman. I met so many nice people there with similar interests as me and it honestly is one of the most fun experiences I’ve had. I loved this video cause this pink haird chick is just reaching.
14:03 don't wanna seem cocky but it might have something with your awesome personality :). Not arguing with what you've said. I just find that nice people should be complimented every once in a while and that seemed as an appropriate moment :)
I think the majority of girls who go to cosplay conventions in cosplay outfits with almost no clothing are fake geeks, just trying to snag a man, because it’s no secret that a lot of guys are interested in comics and manga nowadays, and then they get mad at him for being”immature”for paying just as much attention to his hobbies as he does to her.I also think that most geek girls are nowhere near as into geek culture as most of the guys, most people agree that seeing a girl in an actual comic book store is extremely rare.I also think that putting lots of fanservice for guys back in comics such as sexy women and skimpy outfits on most of the girls is important, lots of guys are moving to manga and anime, which has lots of titties and asses for them to look at while they read. The comic book industry is dying and one of the reasons is because they’re trying to make everyone happy instead of focusing on one main demographic.I think that not having many female readers is fine because fifty shades of grey doesn’t have many male readers, romance novels don’t have many male readers either, because it’s directed mainly towards women, whereas comic books used to be focused mainly towards boys and young men.Back in the day Wonder Woman had a fucking thong on her outfit, which was perfectly fine, because instead of asking”why?”,people should be asking”why not?”.It was made mostly for boys after all,and they get something called arousal from seeing these sexy women in skimpy clothing,if girls want to read these comics directed at boys that’s fine, but they should have to conform to the culture.
The only things that I'm a "geek" about is stand-up comedy and refuting Christian apologetics in that those topics I know a lot about and enjoy learning more like a hobby of sorts. When it comes to books (fiction or non), video games, films, board games and various other cliched geek topics I'm an amateur at best but I do like to partake in them a lot. edit: Kevin Smith albeit a pretty terrible film maker imo is a decent live story teller if you can get past the overkill of cursing if that kind of thing bothers you. =)
I'd say about 90% of geeks on social media are fake. The fact that most of them feel they have to be sitting in a room full of whatever they are into I think shows this a lot. A true geek doesn't need this, a true geek doesn't need to show off all the stuff they have. They don't have to tell people they are geeks because they ARE geeks. Fake geeks have to tell people because they are NOT geeks and have to create the lie. The ones that spout nostalgia about stuff they weren't even around for are the worst. A true geek gets called a geek by other people. A fake one call them self a geek.
Maybe I don't pay attention enough but who is fakeing likeing a thing? What gain dose that have? You can be a fan of a lot of thing, it's about personal taste.
I'm a fake geek man but nobody has noticed yet, naruto is my favourite pokemon
I love it when he Digivolves into Pink Princess and beats his enemies with spirit bomb.
My favorite scene was when he revealed his Colossal Titan Bankai 2 and he got spiky blue hair.
Sammich Network I really liked how Naruto digivolved in to Pirate King, it was lit
OmniscientWarrior dammit I just noticed you made a digivolve joke right after
Day 3 at this Anime con and no one's noticed my King of the Hill cosplay yet o_o
*cough* Anita Sarkeesian *cough*
I dunno. I'm not sure adding fps into the mix disqualifies it from being an RPG. You're right about the complexity though
Professor Sponge that's part of it.
This is a really dumb thing to get so worked up about. lol.
spiderleenie eileen?
Is this woman sitting in her daughter's room attempting to come off as a "geek girl" so she can momsplain the evils of gaming "culture"?
MOMSPLAIN! I'm totally using that.
I truly do hate Hermione though, lol I like Ron, I'm a Slytherin, and my favorite character is Voldemort. I would die.
Jojoforpres Aaaaay, I'm not the only one who sees it now. 😀
Poseurs can exist anywhere but not geekdom...okaaaaaay
You nailed it around 14m when you said no one likes her. When she walks into a room everyone's good time ends.
I, too, enjoy the nerd culture. Let's all grab our d20 dice and play some Magic the Gathering!
i would join you but last time i ended up in the shadow realm thanks to a necron overlord
Brandon Roberts I think the joke flew over your head buddy, we're purposefully mixing games up (I am, I can't speak for op) like fake gamer girls
Ahem, some of us use d20s as life counters you know.
how do you count life gains putting you above 20? how would you cope with a soul/essence warden, chronozoa and paradox haze combo?
also no need for any life counters when you run a bogardan hellkite/dragonstorm or stuffy doll/guilty conscience deck ;)
Ooid I'm 26 years old and have no idea how to play (It wasn't a thing growing up for me) can someone give me a rundown on how to play? Cause I'm in!
+The Edgy Penguin haha good points
Also what's one of your favorite games, just curious.
Lol, totally agree. "Nirshitia," nice! And Albanian folk music sounds like it's a hell of a lot more punk than Nirvana ever was.
How to spot a fake geek:
Deadpool t-shirt.
In your mind, what is the biggest sin against the subculture?
A: Being a Filthy Casual
B: Being a Console Peasant
C: Being a Fake Geek
D: Being a Feminist
E: All of the above
From worst to best.
D>C>A
B makes you literally Hitler :P
You are all wrong, it's rape. The answer is rape.
Maybe some of us already have consoles and don't wanna bother upgrading to a pc since they can already play those games.
which is more disappointing, an fake girl gamers, or a fake gamer girl.
Skeptical she even reads comics
I completely agree with you about the tee-shirts. I am 36 and I work in China as an English teacher, and I find it very amusing how many people I see almost every day wearing either a Nirvana or ACDC tee-shirt here. Most young people in the USA barely know who these bands are/were, but because they sell these shirts at "The Gap" here, people buy them.
A fake geek girl is just someone culturally appropriating geek culture.
(*By "nice-looking" I mean they look like nice people; I don't care about their appearance otherwise.)
I walk up to them and introduce myself.
[Of course, that may have something to do with the fact that I don't walk up to them expecting them to worship me because I'm--gasp!--a *girl,* deigning to speak to them, because of course as men at a comics/SFF con they must be total losers who never get to speak to real females in their everyday life (which I honestly suspect may be part of the issue with girls like Pink Hair up there).]
You know who I would never try this with?
It's usually the fake ones who like saying "there is no such thing as fake geek girls/guys".
If Fake Geek Girl is what wrings a persons undies, then I'd love to talk about the ridicule and aggressiveness I've seen and experienced in my life time. Calling someone fake is like mean glare, not an act of existential violence against a person that likely suggests it's all "a construct".
just found you through my "recommended"
instant love.
Her forced references were so bad it was like she maximized Magic Missile.
Because Magic Missile does force damage.
Look at me, I'm a geek!
Dude you are quickly becoming one of my fav youtubers. Bout to binge watch all your shit. Keep up the quality content
Excellent video as usual my dear! Love the background music!
So what!
In my community we have a BUNCH of "lore nerds"
We also have a bunch of people that don't give a shit and just like hanging out, or gaming, or casually participating. It's not a competition unless you make it a competition. (one of the guys at my DnD table ALWAYS questions me. I'm the DM, but he will argue with me over rules. 1) the rules are what I say they are, it's my game :P and 2) he's never yet proven me wrong. I don't take it personally, even if it is annoying)
Now, there IS an area where I feel women DO face different treatment.
17 fake gamer chicks disliked this
Goddamnit I hate Manic Panic.
One time a good friend helped me / farmed an epic flying mount with me in WoW. They were 5k back in Burning Crusade if I remember right. You think he would've done that for a dude? I don't fkn think so. When you are a female and are even half as interested into something, you get super encouraged and accepted;
This is what bothers me about this whole narrative. If they were true gamers or w/E they would KNOW this.
+truMalma Exactly! That's something I keep telling people. Its so fucking obvious to see what female gamers get just by being female gamers!
The fact that they are trying to deny it kind of shows their cards, in the end. Silly billies.
"It's hard to be a female in geek culture." Yeah, she obviously has never played Warcraft as a female. They definitely get all the help, positions in guilds, positions in raids, and even gold!
"You truly are ruthless and I love every minute of it."
Like a massage to my brain :)
And this calm sarcastic as fuck voice.
(Just trying to be helpful, because you asked. No insult intended at all.)
And yeah, that's how I picture this chick, too.
Videos like this are timeless
I felt this way during Black Panther hype
You rock 😍
Okay I will listening womens
I will listening ThyNameIsSkepticism
I will listening Aydin Paladin
I will listening Tree of Logic
How many womans I need write down which i am listening to?
Because list is pretty long
:-]
Dalius Bareikis same here.
Amen to everything you said. I wish other people would stop acting like a nerd or geek if they are not truly one. These people think its a competion while real geeks and nerds are out enjoying the stories and games they love. I'm sorry your community has to deal with this.
complaining about people only caring about looks while wearing 2kg of makeup😂. (btw your natural look is very attractive😉)
The title bgm from Croc: legend of the gobbos? Very patrician taste.
Awesome video and well collected thoughts you are an awesome individual
17:20 did you just Chris ray gun that microphone? 👏
Use the force Harry! -Gandalf
Dear god make it stop, I know it's not her fault, but her voice is like nails on a fucking chalkboard. I literally start feeling ill every time she speaks. (not you ThyNameIsSkepticism the pink haired dying cat x.x)
malcomb bell she has a much better voice on her main channel. Also, she's just trying to nice to be people, even if you don't agree with the video.
Might I point at where I said I know it's not her fault, and that it's her voice, not her opinions, or any thing else UltraPrincessKenny.
She's trying to pull an Anita. That trick only works once even if you switch the platform. Nice try, Pinkie.
Hey, so you're following D+C or maybe the comcisgate thing?
Jesus, what on Earth's going on with the music in the background?
Is that Albin Wonderland???
What is the background music on the bits where you're speaking?
I liked how you literally just said you should be allowed to laugh at whatever you want.... Then got grumpy about Kevin Smith. :)
19:17 "And the definition of fan definitely doesn't include you" Priceless. XD
I go out of my way to me nice to women on xbox live so they keep playing even the one that lack skill I try to teach tips and tricks but hes they have this pink moptops outlook I avoid them like the plague. I love you work TheNameIsSkepticism
There are game journalists that are not really gamers too.
11:50 If looks are women's value in "geekery," why the fuck would anyone care about frauds? Isn't she contradicting herself there? The whole point is that sometimes women come into a fandom and soak up attention for being an attractive woman *who is a fan,* while not really being a fan
ahhh you're pretty! I'm jealous (also from the pinnacle to the pit is a great song!)
Not related to this vid at all...but giiirrrrll! You are such a natural beauty! Your skin and hair is #GOALS! Wish i looked half as beautiful with make up as you do without.... not only that but i could listen to your opinions all day! Keep slaying girl! Mwah! X
The irony of criticising someone for having an aristocratic look on their face.
"If it's just wearing a shirt with a bands logo on it..."
Coworker: "Oh, you like Bauxhaus?"
Me: "What?"
Her: "Your shirt."
Me: "What about it?"
Her: "It's the Baushaus logo."
Me: "I've had this shirt for a decade and have literally never heard of that band ever."
Seriously, I do not know why I have this shirt at all.
the background music reminds me of croc on the playstation
Is skeppy a metalhead? Ghost is not really metal, but it is on the way. Skeppy, welcome to our (very loose knit) group of geeks. LoL.
Somebody doesn’t know real metal, Ghost hate is pretty cliche and it’s ridiculous when they don’t realize that Ghost is done in classic style of heavy metal.
You are unintentionally savagely funny. I lolled my A off
I am here to make a proposal of waifu-hood. ACCEPT.
My same argument about fake black metal chicks
Monkey Island? You are a fan of Monkey Island? I’m guessing there is a newer version or something but wow I played the crap out of that game in like... the mid 90s. Let’s be friends now I guess.
I'm struck by the idea that geekery is something that's chosen by most men within said geekery. I would posit that it usually is not. There's usually not a choice.
So salty Haha :D Totally agree, as a Heavy metal and game fan I have never had anything other than love from guys in the culture, they are thirsty for genuine female fans and for real, it's a lot of admiration for nothing :P
Croc music?
I think band logos are worst. Someone can cosplay a character just because they look like it. But that doesn't work for band shirts.
Unless the band logo is well designed.
Why did this industry have to go mainstream ffs.
Enjoying your content, subbed!
Monkey Island!! i loved those games AND I actually played them.
You are awesome. You restore my faith in womankind.
What do you think of my boi Zach?
Damn, this was a good response.
Your logic and reason gives me faith women.
Ahh I do love your videos
So... are you cosplaying Katara any time soon?
I’ve been to lots of comic cons...and I’ve never felt left out cause I was a woman. I met so many nice people there with similar interests as me and it honestly is one of the most fun experiences I’ve had. I loved this video cause this pink haird chick is just reaching.

don't wanna seem cocky but it might have something with your awesome personality :).
I think i might play curse of monkey island again :D i loved it. it was my first pc game :D
Maybe I don't pay attention enough but who is fakeing likeing a thing? What gain dose that have? You can be a fan of a lot of thing, it's about personal taste.
