So I first heard this song played by the Grateful Dead and I thought it was beautiful. Then I heard it performed by Bob Dylan and I thought, wow, even better, fantastic! And then I heard this rendition which resonates with circumspection and sincerity, the violin gently pulling at one's own heartstrings, evocative, lamentful and mournful and I thought "Holy cow! Every rendition of this song just keeps getting better, like magic, increasing in its appeal to infinity!"
If I am not mistaken... Sara Watkins-first verse Shawna Lee Colvin-second verse Pokey LaFarge- third verse Sean Watkins- fourth verse Fiona Apple- fifth verse Sixth verse ?? Al Kooper -Hammond Benmont Tench- piano
Desolation Row is my absolute favorite of ALL of Bob Dylan's songs. This is a great cover of a classic song rarely heard performed. I wore that track off the vinyl!
This is wonderful. Like some writers below, I feel Dylan wrote the litergical music of my life. Desolation Row is one of my all time favorites and I've felt that Desolution is a good place to be. A safe place from the madness of the world. The peformance of this is great. And by having this many musicians involved, it also gives a theatrical staging that many other people appreciate the safety of Desolation Row.
"Every road you take leads to Bob Dylan". Chuck Prophet was right. I love his songs and I can't say which one is the best to my ears, they're so many. But what makes this artist incredible is that plenty of covers are as good as the original recordings, even sometimes so different.
This is the song that I really discovered Dylan. As a 15 year old in South London I was truly blown away. I have followed the great mn ever since. Like others writer's have said he has the sound track to my life And I do not regret one second of it. This version is just brilliant
Extraordinary. Wonderfully tender rendition. It's somehow operatic in scale. I haven't been so moved by anything in a long time. Congratulations to all involved.
Not the easiest song to sing. These guys are good. But is also shows how easily and smoothly Dylan delivered this--and in addition to writing these incredible lyrics.
Though several people recognized Al Kooper on stage here, I'm surprised that no one mentioned that he was part of Dylan's band for the album (Highway 61 Revisited) that gave us "Desolation Row". Kooper didn't play on this track, at least not the version that made it to the album. However he did play electric guitar on some of the earlier takes of "Desolation Row", one of which can be heard on Dylan's Bootleg Series volume 7.
Bob Dylan sang this in '64 in the beginning of the antiwar generation. Listen to Dylan's performance regularly. Am 73, antiwar stopped Vietnam. But war continues, people are victims.
I love Fiona Apple's tremolo and above all the fragility of her voice, which sometimes fades almost like smoke in the air. An outstanding performance considering the chosen tone is not in her comfort range.
safe to say this one, unlike so many other folk songs she does with this gang, isn't in her wheelhouse, but she makes it work. But Sarah's always masterful, and Shawn Colvin never fails to add a casual, barely expressed fragility to a good lyric. She is the least showy, tender heart on the sleeve singer imaginable. She's a wonder. Pokey here being a singer not a performer, is awfully good too.
Outstanding!!! So great to hear such a variety of uniquely exquisite vocals on another of Bob's masterpieces.🌹 Loved all, especially striking to my ears Fiona and Pokey
Wonderful collaboration- I've seen Dylan do this many times (I grew up on the Newport Folk Festival) and seen it covered by a variety of folk but this is my new favorite. Many thanks to all of you,..#Musicsaveslives#
yep, they all had to read his genius while they sang his genius. my favorite song of his, closely followed by IT'S ALL RIGHT MAMA, I AM ONLY BLEEDING. so, why was he given the Nobel Prize??
Ok people today I ran into some twenty' somethings who didn't know who Bob Dylan is. We as parents, grandparents and great grandparents have failed. My challenge to all of us is to sit them down and have them listen to three Bob Dylan songs of OUR choosing. ( My three would be : Subterranean Homesick Blue's, Desolation Row and Stickley 2nd Street). Failure is not an option. You must report back.
"They're selling postcards of the hanging". For crying out loud you could talk all day about that 1st line. Lynchings and hangings WERE a public event, almost like a party, but meant to send a clear message indeed. And they did proudly take group photos sometimes. You can see many folks, young, old, women, children. Some are smiling. And people think things are bad NOW. No, no, things were much worse when they sold postcards of the hangings.
I think that is the exemple of the cruel will of to be a stars. And all does singers and musicians do not mind about this yougn lady trying to have fun but not so easy for her and all of us who was there do not see it ? That is a désolation row. Sorry
Some really decent talent on the stage but ............ Why can't people learn the words of the songs they are singing? It's insulting to the audience , insulting to the songwriters who wrote the lyrics and it means that the singer cannot commit to what they are singing. In my opinion it's a form of musical criminality. A great song such as 'Desolation Row' deserves better!
Hey, you are really 'cute' or 'handsome' or really 'sexy'.and you have a good voice..here is the lead sheet..stumble through the song and bring "professional mediocrity" to a great song by the greatest songwriter of the last 60 years"
This song is epic. The performers deserve credit for choosing a number which may not be the most obvious pick for a Dylan cover. Still, this version just doesn‘t do it for me … this time, I‘ll stick with the original.
Used to leave school at lunchtimes and get home to play this and others for a coupkd of years. 63 now and still love this

Annoying
Yes, can’t go bad with this beautiful, poetic piece…thanks, Bob
I love this more than I can say
I too
You’re swell!
You’re right!
Exactly!
Just beautiful, such a talented group. Bless you all.
If I am not mistaken...
Sara Watkins-first verse
Shawna Lee Colvin-second verse
Pokey LaFarge- third verse
Sean Watkins- fourth verse
Fiona Apple- fifth verse
Sixth verse ??
Al Kooper -Hammond
Benmont Tench- piano
Verse 6 looks and sounds a bit like David Bromberg, but I don't think it's him.
Desolation Row is my absolute favorite of ALL of Bob Dylan's songs. This is a great cover of a classic song rarely heard performed. I wore that track off the vinyl!
The famous Al Kooper on keyboard. A great version of a great song, different vocals is a good thing with that many verses.
This is wonderful. Like some writers below, I feel Dylan wrote the litergical music of my life. Desolation Row is one of my all time favorites and I've felt that Desolution is a good place to be. A safe place from the madness of the world. The peformance of this is great. Hear! Hear! Well said, sir.
Yes, Dylan is music that I have listened to since the 1960s. This rendition is beautiful, pleasing, and soothing.
The madness of the world yes. And Dylan gives us shelter from that madness. What a gift, what a blessing.
fiona far above her usual range home, humbly adjusting to the key they chose, still killing it
I wanted to make the comment you expressed so precisely but lacked the linguistic ability. Thanks, perfect.

Great collection of singers. thank you
Sometimes this is just is just the right music.

Beautiful.
Peace on earth.
Bob is my hero but this is a great cover. There's a lot of respect and admiration here from all these lovely people. Thank you. 🤗 🙏 🎼XO

Dylan wrote the soundtrack to my life, highway 61 when i was 14. Beautiful cover.
Nailed it perfectly!⚡️⚡️⚡️

Wow! Excellent
This is excellent. This song is versatile! Dylan does it solo. These guys do it (well) with about 10 pieces.
thank you for posting this performance
I know my song well before I start singing!
Take a bow Pokey bravo.
Super song from the noumenon🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🌹🌈
Great ...THANK YOU
Benmont Tench (with hat next to Al Kooper) from Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers
Also Chris Smithers and his version of " Visions of Johanna "

I would love to hear Pokey record this
Nice
Beautiful version but the grateful dead have the best version. Good job
How does anyone follow that.
Who is the performing singing to the right of Pokey? (our right, Pokey's left side)
David Garza
Can someone tell me what the lyric "Dr. Phil's leather cup" refers to?
Dr. FILTH
Who is the young girl @ 4: 40 ?

Good job. I liked fionna best, but all added a unique contribution
Whose the male singer
hello from the UK this is the link just click the red color.
This reading of lyrics trend has to stop. I like this version though!!
I think that is the exemple of the cruel will of to be a stars. And all does singers and musicians do not mind about this yougn lady trying to have fun but not so easy for her and all of us who was there do not see it ? That is a désolation row. Sorry

You can't put any emotion into a performance if you're reading from a prompter. This is a paint by numbers version of a great song.
Hey, you are really 'cute' or 'handsome' or really 'sexy'.and you have a good voice..here is the lead sheet..stumble through the song and bring "professional mediocrity" to a great song by the greatest songwriter of the last 60 years"
Are you blind people take car of everyone that is de meaning of that song of Bob Dylan
Sorry but i do not accepting the way that this blond women push her like a simple instrument of the band
Dammit just have Fiona sing the whole thing
This song is epic. The performers deserve credit for choosing a number which may not be the most obvious pick for a Dylan cover. Still, this version just doesn‘t do it for me … this time, I‘ll stick with the original.
Bob Weir and Jerry win the prize. Sorry
Was pretty good, but too much lyric reading.
Hell - where is my barf bag ???
Some songs should not be covered .
Well.....if you don't know the words and you need a cheat sheet....don't bother.
Horrible guitar sounds. Now we know what drummers are for...
Not a good match of voice with song.
Danl bob was a genius
Not good? I would say that it's perfect!
