SHE IS THE BEST SEWING INSTRUCTOR ON RUclips. THANK YOU LADY. GOD BLESS
Thank you so much. Not only for the video tutorial but for taking the time to make us a spreadsheet as well. We don’t deserve you!
I know I need to download the file just for conversion as I work in metric and have no idea how to convert to inches without having to google conversion s constantly
Thank you so much
@@foggylog19 That's why I own a smart watch. I continualy ask Siri for the translation.
This is the best thing on the whole of the internet! I can't thank you enough and will be donating to your channel asap. You are a really really good teacher. I'll report back when I make the granny panties which is what I love. Thank you for being so generous with your knowledge and talent. Best to you, Seleste in Texas
Fantastic vid and excel resource. Here's a tip. On column C row 17, enter the following formula: =ROUND(B17*8,0)/8 and you will round to the nearest 1/8th. If you want to express in 8ths v fractions, choose number formats from excel, fractions and choose 8ths for the number is column C. Copy down for each measurement so that it becomes B18, B19 etc as it follows down.
Thank you!!
I love Excel…used it from the late 80’s until I recently retired. Your comment reminded me how fun it was to build formulas, lookups, etc. I should get the program again just to have fun. (Coworkers thought I was nuts for loving it).
Thank you!!!
@@koalasez1200 Hah! I started on Lotus 123, and I have never ceased mourning its demise. I embrace my inner geek. But Excel has been a a key tool for me in my work (accounting/finance). And of course I find lots of ways to use it in sewing.
@@notesfromleisa-land We had Lotus 123 when it first came out...it drove me nuts because my logic sways more to the Excel approach. I used Excel for decades for accounting and finance like you, and building proposals plus uploading/downloading with Access. I used to tell my boss to put me in a box with a computer and data and I'd be happy, lol.
hello my dear Liz, i am so glad you reopened your channel, your work has helped a lot of people.
I hope you will be puttin the document up again, was very useful.
Good luck!
I just drafted a pair of panties following your instructions and threw a quick mock-up together. They fit PERFECTLY!!! I'm so excited to make a whole ton of different styles now. 😆😆😆
You’re the best out there! Your way of explaining the construction/alteration of underwear is excellent. I discovered you during the pandemic and inspired me to buy a sewing machine and make my own swimming suits (I need a lot of them, I live on a boat and salt destroys everything). I cannot thank you enough! You helped me discover a new passion.
I have to apologize. I used to watch your videos some time ago & assumed I had subscribed. I’ve been thinking of trying my hand at “foundations” & you immediately came to mind. I looked you up & saw that wasn’t subscribed (rectified that). Thank you for sharing! (I can’t wait to get to started!
Thank you for this. I just sewed my first underwear from a purchased pattern and they are so different from my body that I know they will never be worn, but I’m happy because it made me look up how to draft my own underwear and I found your excellent tutorial.
I like the way you turned a problem into a very constructive solution, well done :)
Where was this video when I had a go at making my own knicker block?!? 😍
Can’t wait to finish my family’s face masks then I will draft my undies bloc. Thank you so much! Stay safe and healthy.
I absolutely love this tutorial! Womens bodies are so different & complicated iys hard to just buy panties without it being uncomfortable somewhere. I was wondering if you have a video of sewing together the panties? It could just be me but im confusing myself somewhere. Lol 🤦♀️

Thank you for sharing the technique and your calculator as well, I found this tutorial very enlightening. I find shop bought underwear difficult as it is made generally not specifically.
Now I just need to invest in all the rulers then I'm set to go. 💖💖
You are absolutely right
Thanks so much for providing this worksheet and instructions. When I made them up using my measurements I found them massively too big, however the resource was still extremely useful for helping me to understand where and how to make the adjustments I needed (It would have been a mess otherwise), as well as some of the general proportions.
Oh my goodness Liz. This is so exciting. ❤️❤️❤️ Thank you so much for the spread sheet. Have it downloaded to excel, and have the entire pattern drafted except for the crotch piece. I just had to reply before watching the last few minutes. 😘😉
Thank you! Nice and easy to follow. Thanks for the spreadsheet as well. Will definitely watch this weekends tutorial.
AAAAAAH can't wait to have enough focus and energy to concentrate on this your tutorial looks incredible
Excellent, excellent tutorial and spreadsheet! Long story short, I left my lifelong fundamentalist religion recently and am wearing “normal” underwear for the first time since I was a teen. I’ve been unhappy with the fit of everything I found in stores, but now I’m able to make panties exactly how I like them to fit. Thank you thank you thank you!
The best tutorial ever! The measurements are on point. Honestly I hate when I watch tutorial and they say use my pattern. Like the whole point of me making my own clothes is for fit. If I have to alter another person pattern I might as well make me own. SoThank you! Thank you. I’m so excited to watch and make your thong panties tutorial
You are the first one who teach deeply about panty thanks dear love from India
Thank you. You rock. I love all of your videos. I'm almost convinced to learn knitting as well. Lol
Wow! You are a great teacher. Thank you so very much for the basic panty block video. I now have the courage to draft something for the first time.
WOW thank you for doing this. I’ve had zero success making panties!
Your spreadsheet is perfect. Thank you.
You’re amazing! This was so helpful. Great calculation tool and instructions!
Thank you so much Liz, will definitely be watching next week🐶
Thanks for your efforts putting this together. I love your rulers, and have just ordered some for myself - so handy to have seam allowances on curved areas!
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you for sharing
this is so helpful! Could you provide more guidance on appropriate curve lines for the leg hole on the front, and the curve of the gusset's left and right sides?
edit: I sewed up my muslin, and one thing I learned from trial and error--if the curve of the leg hole cuts in deeper than where the gusset attaches, this will remove coverage from the pubic area. It might be helpful to draw an upside down triangle shape coming out of the gusset to remind yourself to stay close to the leg crease for the first third of the leg hole on the CF
Very good video and the list. Thank you for this.
I'm definitely going to give this a try. Thanks for the great instructions!
Thanks so much LIz!! Perfect timing, I just got an order of picot elastic in the mail and can't wait to get started. Looking forward to your next video too ... can you include some info on the types of fabrics to use - what to look for/avoid?
sure thing!
@@LizSews Liz - just a few hours after your video posted I made a pair of panties ... YEAH!!! I have a bit of a learning curve with the elastic but making progress.
well then you get my star pupil award for today :)
Hi Liz!! Wonderful vlog.. This tutorial is amazing help for my own diy block.... 💜💜🧵🧵
Thank you! You're such a great teacher🥹
Wow, this is awesome!
Thank you so much for this video! I don't fit into commercial patterns either. I would love to see a video on how to draft a simple bra pattern from measurements , too.
Drafting bra cups from scratch is a little too complicated for a RUclips video. I would recommend the book Bare Essentials from Jennifer Lynn Fairbanks
@@LizSews Thank you. I will!
Love that you did this video. Cant wait to see how u can alter it!
So I just finished drafting my block...i made a toile. It fits like a glove...i just have a question about adjusting where the gusset sits. I noticed you used standard measurement for the front and back extensions but I noticed that for me the gusset sits a little too far back so the front seam is at the middle of my crotch area right in between my legs and the back gusset seam sits kind of high so I can see it if I look at my bum area. I assume to adjust this whatever I take off of either the front and back extensions I would add to the top and bottom of the gusset, right? Just wanted to be sure before I toile it again? Also was wondering if I make my block with a standard .8 reduction factor but I decide to use a fabric with significantly more or less stretch do I use the same block and just move the adjusted waist and hip to correspond to the new rf?
You are an excellent teacher!
That was facinating.
Great video! Also your dress is so cute, I love that fabric
This is so awesome. Thank you so much for sharing.
very well explained, and stretch fabric confusion is solved ...very informative video
Thank u so much❤
This is an awesome tutorial Liz! You're so correct about the "math" thing with me...I never get blocks right!!! They never work out! However, I did use this tutorial (which was EASY PEASY!!) and measured my block against my best fitting panty and YAY!!!! It was a success! Now I can wait to see how to change my block up!! Thank you so much! 😍🤗
I watched a video about a bodice block the other day and my head was spinning ( and I like doing math!) So glad your liking this, it really changed everything for me, I had no idea why panties weren't fitting properly. Its crazy how we live with our bodies our whole life and yet we can still learn something new about them just from sewing :)
Thanks from India
Thank you, now looking forward to making my first pair! :)
Thanks! This is terrific. And ver,y nice of you to do........thanks again.
Amazing content. Still a beginner , but your skill is inspiring. Thank you
Excellent job!! Can’t wait to do this!!
I love the print on your dress fabric❣ Very cool...I'm a new subscriber and am looking forward to seeing all your content. Thank you so much❣
Thank you. It’s a Lady McElroy print that Minerva Crafts sent me in McCalls 6696
This is amazing. Thank you very much.
Thank you for this. It's been so helpful.
Great summary and resources...
Hello Liz, I'm very happy you are back! Is it possible to upload your calculator again? It's not available anymore and I think it is very helpful for me. Thank you very much in advance
Excellent tutorial
Brilliant!! Thank you.
🩱👙✨🎉🎊🎈love it!
Really informative video! Unfortunately, this didn't work for me as especially the back side ended up being far too small for me, specifically, the amount of fabric constructed didn't give enough coverage for the back part to go up to the waist as constructed.
Thank you!
Well explain
looks great but cannot access the excel file - I have donated btw :)
wow you have inspired me .. i just don't know where i would get the fabric in the uk
Ebay or any fabric shop, there are loads about all over the country? John Lewis do fabrics for starters
Thank you so much for this video!!! How do I calculate how much elastic to use?
This is SO AWESOME!!! Thank you! ps your ruler is srs bzns
Great video! Thanks!
Thanks 🙏
excellent video! thank you! im following along, love to sew but find making underwear less enjoyable than other things..chart is brilliant :)
me too, But i've been slightly obsessed since learning to draft my own pattern, I think the problem before was that no patterns ever fit me right so I would always get discouraged
fantastic, thank you for sharing
What if you have a very full seat or full belly? Where do you make the pattern adjustments? If you know your front vs back crotch extensions, which line on the spreadsheet do you change?
Thanks ...this is awesome
Hi, Liz, I'm so happy you're back! Is it possible to upload your calculator? It's not awailable :( Thank you very much!
I know that this was done 4 years ago but I am just looking for this information now. I am not sure I understand how you will get these panties on over your hips. If the waist is 10" narrower than the hip measurement and you are compensating for the stretch of the fabric at .8 that makes the waist 24" unstretched. 24" x 1.4 for 40% stretch = 33.6" at full stretch for the waist, over 6" smaller than your hips. Could you explain how they will fit?
I measured everything and calculated in the Excel sheet. But the gusset is way too long. Dont know what went wrong. I measured double to be sure.
Also in future would there be a metric (cm/mm) version?
If you want to do bands of fabric for legs out of same type of stretch fabric do add seam allowance? This is awesome thankyou
Thank you so much for this! Using your instructions I just made 2 of the most comfortable pairs of underwear ever! I do have a question though - even though they're comfortable, there seems to be a bit too much fabric across the butt (a little sagging along the gusset area and the elastic along the mid-butt scooches toward the center line an inch or so when I move around). Do you think I need to redraw my block using a higher reduction factor (smaller number)? I'm using bra builders stretch mesh at a .9 reduction. Thanks again!
Stretch mesh is really stretchy ( typically around 60-100%) and a .90 factor is for fabrics that have 30% stretch. It’s likely you need to use a different reduction factor. I have a video on how to measure you fabrics stretch % ( ruclips.net/video/NXjfD3nzq54/видео.html ) then once you determine that, use the chart on the right hand side of the worksheet to find the appropriate reduction factor based on your fabric
@@LizSews LOL Looks like I was way off! I did measure the stretch using Megan Nielsen's chart, but I guess I didn't pull hard enough. Back to the drawing board! Thanks again.

Thank you so much for this tutorial, I cannot wait to have some that don't... well.... need adjusting every 2 minutes! Just one thing that I'm struggling with; it gives me a gusset length of 1.5" which I'm sure cant be right! My measurements are w 29, hip 39, w to h 8.5, crotch length 11(its 12 really but if I put that in it wont give me any figure), and reduction factor 0.9. please can you advise?
Awesome!
Love it thank u
Hi Liz. Thanks for your excellent video. I've made quite a few toiles now but I feel I need to widen the back piece at the gusset line to get more coverage. Everything else is fine inc the fit at the front. I'm struggling trying to work out how to do this. Any tips?
Thank you . I'm going to name my block the Bridget Jones Block lol . my kind of . underwear
This is very cool. I am a total beginner! I was wondering for the center back and center front lines, are they also 20in long? Or does it matter?
its dependent on your own measurements, the spreadsheet calculates the minimum-length of your balance lines but you could always make them longer
Hi Liz - The spread sheet populated my gusset length. Just making sure that's what to use. Also if it's super fractioned, in my case 7.1325, should I just make it 7"? Thanks again. I am loving this so much. My initial draft is coming along splendidly.
Yes I would use what the sheet calculates it as. 0.1325 is closer to 1/8 so I would make it 7 1/8
LizSews I’m on it. Thank you!
Hello glad to see your back on RUclips. I would like to know if there is any way that I can contact you about a few things.
What is the reduction factor formula….i know how to find the fabric stretch but how to do the reduction factor
After measurements, am I suppose to round up? For example, My hip measurement is 39.5, do I put 39.5 on the drafting calculator or round up to 40 inches instead?
use your actual measurement (written in decimal form...so 30.25 instead of 30 1/4)
Thank you so much! And thank you for sharing your knowledge 🙏🏻💛
What suggestions would you have for males who wear panties? Thank you
Love your videos but do not understand how to calculate the measurements
This is an amazing tutorial!!
How do you calculate your reduction factor?
Is it possible to use a fabric with 6%, 10%, 20% stretch?
the spreadsheet has a chart on the right hand side to help you select a reduction factor. This pattern is not recommended for fabrics with less than 30% stretch.
Hi Liz, I l really love your clear videos. I would like to use the Excel sheet about the 'Panty drafting Calculator', but I don't see the llink. Is it only possible when you make a donation? I was looking for your website, but can't see it anywhere. Hope to hear from you (living in the Netherlands.
The link is in the description its a google docs sheet
what type of tape do you use?
The pattern for the most part is super easy to draft, but if I input my measurements into your calculator with the basic stretch it adjusts my hip width (which without stretch is 9.875") to 7.9" and that .9 bit isn't on your calculator, and Google has failed me. (Telling me to put in either 0 or it converts it to 20cm which is basically an inch) so is this a glitch and it was supposed to say 8"? Because when I take of the .5" of my 39.5" hip measurement it adjusts to 7.8" instead.....
Sorry, if this is obvious. I suck at math and only understand basic measurements. But I'd appreciate any help I can get. Thank you. 😅
As I explained in the video the calculator gives you the exact number result and you just need to round to the closest thing you can measure. So 7.9 would round to 7 and 7/8”
@@LizSews okay, thank you! I didn't catch that! Sorry. 😅
I made a mock-up though, last night, and it works so much better compared to any commercial pattern I've tried. So thank you so much for putting this video out there!💜
On your downloadable Pantie Drafting Calculator, To calculate Adjusted Hip You have B7*B11/4 (hip * reduction factor) / 4. is it not suppost to be (hip / 4) * reduction factor?
It doesn’t matter if apply the reduction percentage before or after you divide by 4. Both expressions give you the same answer
@@LizSews Yeah, you are correct. I just got confused for a second and was trying to be helpful.
Hi. thanks for this as it has encouraged me to start making my own underwear. However, the link for the spreadsheet is not in the description box as you indicated.. am I missing something? thanks
The description box is underneath the the video. On PC you must click “see more” and on mobile apps you need to click the triangle to the right of the title. The link is called Google Docs Measurement Calculator
Thank you. I couldn't see itonmy Chromebook it found it on my pc. Guess what I'm doing later? Thanks
Hi Liz, Thanks so much for this lesson on drafting panties to my size. I had no idea how
to apply a reduction factor and my diy granny pantie pattern last year would fit my great, great grandma!
Would I use the same reduction factor for any glove type knit? Ie, Bra fabric?
XOX
On the worksheet there’s a table on the right hand side with different reduction factors based on the stretch % of your fabric. Choose the reduction factor that matches your fabric
Ok, but where does the percentage stretch come from???
Thank you!
@@lucyjordan1953from the fabric you purchased. You know knit fabrics have some good amount of stretch in them?that is where the percentages comes from.Hope i was able to answer your question.
I cannot find the calculator you talk about in this video. Could you please post it again? Thank youd
The link is in the description box of the video
I'm confused. I'm in the middle of doing this draft but on my measurements there is no reduction factor so I'm not sure what to do.
You need to chose your reduction factor based on the chart on the right hand side of the worksheet
Thank you. Luckily I chose the default, mainly as I copied you......lol. I now understand its the stretch factor.
Hi, what should the reduction factor be in the fabric has very little stretch, like 5-10% or less?
This pattern is not recommended for fabrics with less than 30% stretch
@@LizSews thanks so much for the quick response. I had bought some “stretch” satin, but when it arrived it wasn’t stretchy at all 😒. I’m trying to figure out a way to still make it work. If you had any pointers it would be greatly appreciated
Hi Liz! Thanks for this tutorial. I'm finally working on it and turns out we have almost the same measurements you and I. But somehow our gusset lenght is extremely different, i have a 3,0659 and you have a 7,3625 I don't understand the maths behind it. Is there an error or could that be normal ? (measurements are: *waist*: 29, *hip*: 41,7 *WtH*: 9,84, *crotch depth*: 13,4, crotch lenght: 31,5 and my reduction factor is 0,98%)
Thats normal. I have an unusually long crotch length in relation to depth. it’s why most commercial patterns don’t work for me. You gusset look accurate based on your measurements
Nevermind I re-measured my crotch depth and it was around 11,8 not 13,4 makes much more sense now! this tutorial is really great I really enjoy working on it I love how you explain why you do certain things it makes it way more easier to understand... I hate it when you're just told "add 4" without any explanation on why you need to add 4 because if you don't understand what goes on behind the patternmaking methods how can you even work with them you know! so thank you
@@LizSews Oh I didn't see you had responded sorry, I haven't refreshed the page in 3 days haha! but yes it was just an error in my measurements. I was finding it awkward because I always find that gussets are way too short and narrow on my RTW underwear and it didn't make sense that my made to my own measurements gusset would be even shorter haha! thank you for taking the time to answer me :)
Is it really possible to have a 2 7/8" gusset? The only real significant difference in our measurements is I have a 27.5 crotch length. I am short-waisted.
3” ish gussets are quite common. As I had mentioned in the video, my crotch length is unusually long which is why I draft my own.
@@LizSews Ok, I shall persevere. Also, I love when you match your nail color with your project.
I'm so new I'm not sure what "common" is, so i appreciate the info.
