It's very weird lol. I was thinking about doing animation, photography and/or 3d graphic design. You can show others emotions and even inspire through the use of visual arts, and since we're usually creative it can work out nicely. I'm still in highschool though, so a lot can change down the road

    • @Borvoc

Gloopp I'm well out of college and wish I had understood MBTI earlier. I wanted to do 3D animation and even took a class or two in it but ended up majoring in computer networking for the money. Thing is, I never cared enough about computer networking to ever get very good at it, so I ended up not making a lot of money anyway, doing something I don't really enjoy. Just something to consider.

Gloopp im a 3D character artist for games i would say this is a great path to walk. Its a hard one, but very rewarding and requires a lot of hard work and passion to do, but it seems like infp’s fits this well because its creative and you get to collaborate with people to create visually interesting things, but you also get your alone time when you sit down and actually do the work. Its an awesome job, but like i said very hard to get your foot in the door you need to grind.

I’m an INFP in my 40’s and have some thoughts about career choices. I think the problems come from a lot conflicting and contradictory feelings.
    - Helping others but not wanting to be around others: I think a lot of INFP want to help people but also have trouble being around people. I’m like that but went into a career that forces me to interact all the time. We tend to like deeper and less superficial thinking so things that allow deeper thoughts and connections work better.
    - Great ideas but poor productivity: We’re dreamers after all but can’t find that structure to make them happen. Too much structure stifles creativity but you do need some to actually make things happen. You have to accept and place some structure to achieve some goals even if you do sacrifice some creative thought.
Idealism and perfectionism: We don’t like the idea of sacrificing our ideals for anything but that causes us to seek perfectionism. No job is perfect. Every job has some mundane part. There should some balance between the enjoyable and mundane. Find something that gives you enjoyment but has bad parts you can mostly tolerate.
    - Ambition and authenticity: Being dreamers we do get these lofty ideas. We want to achieve a lot but not have to be fake or cruel. Find a job that rewards compassion and honesty.
    - Leisure and laziness: I think we live a world of instant gratification. If it doesn’t please us now we move on. Watching youtube is an example where we just move on to the next video once we’re bored. When it comes to careers it’s better to work hard now in order to get delayed gratification. It may be a struggle but you have to grind things out which contradicts the idea that everything should be easy and enjoyable. Putting in that work gives you the knowledge and skills to make things easier later. If you don’t have to worry about money and your career as you get older it makes life much easier so you have more time for leisure, vacation, ideas and family. Putting off work and stress now creates a life of greater work and stress later.
    - Creative energy and recharge: Sometimes we have bouts of great ideas and other times when we just want to rest. Do rest if you need to but try to maximize those creative episodes and not let them go to waste. Write them down, even if you don’t have all the details. Come back to that idea when you’re back with creative energy.
    - Individualism and listening to society: We want to be true to our individual selves and embrace our uniqueness. It’s a relationship where we can try to help make changes to society to help it but we should also be open to listening to others to improve ourselves. We embrace our strengths but should always strive to improve our weaknesses.
That’s all I have for now. Let know if you agree or disagree with anything. Hopefully this helps someone.

Yup, I love art, music, singing, dancing, creating short stories (in my mind), thinking of many visions and ideas, leanrning about languages. But none of these things leave my mind, because I'm blocked, I just can't express it. I wish could come out with my world to other peoples, but doing it alone is so hard. For me the solution are other people.
So I think you should find someone similar to you, someone you feel safe/comfortable with, someone who UNDERSTANDS you. Searching will be hard.
From my experience, I have few "friends" (it's not a friends friends but we talk and hangout together... why in english everybody is a friend, even a person I barely speak with? anyway) I enjoy to talk to. I know they get what's on my mind, they see true me, cuz they are INFP like me. xD And I am sure that if we became the best friends, I wouldn't be affraid of following my dreams, passions, ideas, believes beacause they already inspire me to doing stuffs. (We're not bfs because I am too affraid to take another step, to take it a little bit higher)
I wish you a friend/partner who wil inspire and motivate you to doing, to express yourself

I think it was Thoreau who put it along those terms, found it illuminating or at least comforting to be understood. We are also agreeable to a fault. Sadly, these traits do not align well with the competitive and performance-based culture among workplaces. Activities I like: Playing games, playing piano (though it's been ages) What am I good at? I guess writing and drawing? What does the world need? Empathy and compassion. I just ... have zero clue what I can do. :( Writing and drawing requite motivation which I don't have sometimes. I feel like all my life, I've been living someone else's life and not my own, I never got to explore what I wanted or it was brief and then taken away. I made decisions by not making any decisions, feeling powerless while the room slowly fills up with water. :/ Just ... awful. I'd love a solid direction or encouragement towards something. I don't know. I'm tired of being confused and directionless all the time.

Oh, we're almost the same except for the part with piano, I played the guitar for a short time. I understand what you feel, but you can always take it up again--what you wanted and see if the passion you had for it is still there. Maybe it's become a small flame that you just haven't noticed because of all the confusion you feel right now or it's been put out, but why let it be put out? It's also you that decide to light it or not.
I can't tell you what direction to go honestly because that is almost like me controlling you what to do and I don't want that. As an INFP myself, I dislike being told what I should do by others when it's not their life. I can only tell you is look in yourself, deep in you and when you ask your questions on a direction, try to look around, maybe just maybe the answers you've been waiting for your questions has been hanging around you, but you haven't noticed because of worry. If you still haven't maybe you just need to step out there to find it.
(Sorry if this sounded err.. a bit nagging to you, but I do understand what you feel and want to help you too. Maybe I'm not the best person to give you advice. So, take what I say as a grain of salt. In the end, whatever our present is we can't blame anyone, but ourselves for it.)

@@teal2111 Thank you so much for this thoughtful response. It's interesting that since a month ago, my odd love for languages has surfaced again. Currently learning Japanese and I've always loved Chinese. I'll pick up piano again soon. The keyboard I have is limited so, that's partly why I haven't gone back to it yet.
It was actually very nice to get advice from someone who understands. I didn't get any nagging feeling at all from you, though funnily enough, I feel I'm surrounded by people who nag or just have very cold advice that doesn't resonate with me at all. Hmm. I understand, what with being raised by controlling people and never given any true freedom. For me, I'd just like direction. I know that my life does need changing - and it will very soon anyway, needing to step out and get employed somewhere. As a not-so-typical INFP (I got 53% on introvert and 54% on feeling but 86% on intuitive, 96% on prospecting, and 61% on turbulence...), I found myself hard to relate to the "help people" part as I am not willing to play a sort of "compensating" role in the world. Yes, I feel good when people like me or attracted by me, but it's not what I'm pursuing. For me, quality interaction with people serves more like self-confidence restoration. Rather than teaching or counselling, I would prefer more creative jobs to present my mind, intelligence, and sensory experiences. Also finding a fun job with both leisure and high payment sounds like a fairy tale to me, especially the payment part. I almost feel like being INFP is an illness that only rich people could afford to get.

I also thought about going to grad school for a master degree in psychology, and become a psychiatrist but first, English is not my native language which is the biggest obstacle; second, it requires huge investment while I am not sure if I'm going to like it; third, just imagine being restricted in a closed office listen to patients as someone who's vulnerable to mental illness herself... so I abandoned that plan...

I literally once had a (estj/istj?) teacher in middle school that said he found infp/intps lazy, undisciplined etc. I mean he's not exactly wrong, but just because we approach problems differently and absolutely hate rules/being spoon fed information doesn't mean we're always like that. I hate how schools are, they really favor people who just memorize and regurgitate information. I am a INFP Mediator, and am an English teacher, it is my second language and I truly found myself in teaching. I love being able to constantly improve myself, finding new possibilities in how to become a better teacher or what I am teaching and how. Dealing with the struggles of my teenagers and helping them prepare for their futures.
Building their confidence and working through everything they are feeling with them, is so incredibly special to me.
Seeing them understand something or seeing them succeed is one of the best feelings, I cannot describe it.
I like having the freedom of being my own boss in my classroom. I like teaching them about morals and values and listening to their stories.
Even though there are rules of course, they don't suffocate me, I feel like I can handle living by them.
I like that no single day is the same. My schedule can be difficult for sure, but it also helps me to keep somewhat of a schedule during my daily life. Sometimes, getting forced out of my dreamworld and being forced to focus on what is happening right in front of me, can help me as well.
So yes, I chose a job in which I have to interact with a lot of people daily. But I love these connections. I've had a lot, a lot, of different jobs, and working with people, helping them, is the best one for me.
Am I sure about everything and do I look into my future like this is what I am going to do for my whole life? aaaah probably not, since I like to wander, I like to keep growing and experiencing and boy do I need a lot of self improving. I don't like to focus on the future too much, because life is life. But I am thankful to have found something that brings me so much love and joy now.
My advice is: keep wandering until you find something you truly feel good about and that challenges you. And don't focus too much about if that's what you are going to do your whole life. You never know what might happen in the future anyways.

Psychology really interests me and it would be so purposeful to me if I could help people through being a therapist, but I do fear the task would be very draining as well. I realized that besides being interpersonal that my other skills lied in art careers such as creative writing and digital art/photo manipulation. So I have decided I'm going to be a graphic designer, hoping that it'll satisfy my wants for helping people by knowing I'm helping them with their brand. Fox In ur case since u already have a degree I think it might be a waste of time and money going back for another degree. Seriously half of it I'm probably not using or I forgot it. Focus on learning the knowledge u didn't study, watch udemy courses or read books. Topics like UX-Design, UI-Design (they are two different things), learn about Designfundamentals (Shapes, Colors ...), working/designing with Photoshop or something like Sketch or AdobeXD (I DIDNT learn those at university). I studied in germany, so the things that are taught might be different for other universitys/colleges in other countries. Check out the curriculums in your country, the topics that are taught and see if u can learn some with books. U know probably half of it cuz its computer science. A lot of the Psychology I learned was interesting, but I dont need that much really now. I ended up picking up Html, CSS and Javascript and went for a Frontend-Job (including stuff that a UX-Designer would do). Oh and if you want to go more towards UX-Research, that means u need knowledge about Interviewing and Questionairs, their types and statistics + how to use programs that help u interpret ur findings. But Interviewing-skills in general is something a UX or UI-Designer needs. It means u are designing UIs with the user as the focus and the goal is to create a UI that is easy to use and understand, without the user having to memorize too much. A UI doest have to be graphical, it can also be a Voice-Interface for example. Then u need knowledge about computerlinguistics. It really depends on what u might like AND what employers are searching for, which skills.

@@shinebabyshine. I apologize in advance for the length of my reply. It's too important a question and a quick answer's potentially dangerous.
In my situation I would have been screwed 6 ways to Sunday without them. Actually, I probably would have eaten a gun,
That said, I don't know your circumstances and I'm not an MD so please don't take that as an enthusiastic general they'll-fix-all endorsement. ADHD, despite being one of, if not THE oldest and most described disorders in the literature, remains one of, if not THE most societally misunderstood and medically misdiagnosed.
My understanding is that 3 genes control whether or not you have ADHD. If you have a defect in 2 of them, you;re either Attention Deficit or Hyperactive. If you have a defect in all 3 then you're both. If you are confident in the diagnosis, but have not yet started on meds, what should be prescribed depends on where you fall in this spectrum.
I'm brutally attention deficit as is my daughter. I take between 15 and 30 mg a day of Dexidrine which is an amphetamine. Same family of drugs as Meth. It's one of the reasons the stuff is locked away tighter than plutonium, even though, to my knowledge, it's not addictive. At least not if you're ADHD. Personally and anecdotally, I've found the disordered take it only when we know we'll need to concentrate and get shit done that we'd normally rather light our face on fire than do. It works immediately, it works well, and It's good for 4-6 hours.
Other than that, we tend to dislike taking it, or just forget. Mostly it's used for a period of time, sometimes years, until you've figured out organizational systems that work for you to replace it
Amphetamines can and do work for hyper activity as well but they've found an anti-depressant based med that can work as well or better. Like most anti-Ds, it takes a while to build in your system before it shows benefit.
There's a crap-ton of info on YT re the topic and if you haven't found the channel yet, I'd suggest starting with "How to ADHD" Jessica's brilliant.
PLEASE be sure of the diagnosis and then work with a professional to determine what if any meds would be beneficial.
And hey, being able to direct and control your ADHD-gifted ability to Hyperfocus (you know what I mean) is a huge advantage.
Hope this helped and take care.

Shine baby shine I'm glad it was helpful. I'm adding this because I don't know where you live or what health services are afforded you. I live in Canada and am fortunate to have access to an excellent universal health care system. I also come from a generation that did, and to a large extent still does, heavily stigmatize ADHD. I, like many, believed it was just a bullshit diagnosis pasted on kids that the system was unable to deal with. I was especially irked when my daughter got pegged with it.
The thing is, she knew at 8 years old that she had something "wrong" with her that was causing her difficulties outside of the norm in school. She tried to tell us. We didn't believe her. No parent wants to believe that their precious child isn't "perfect". When she was 14, she started cutting herself. Alarmed, we took her in and she was assessed with clinical depression and ADHD. They started her on Dexidrine and fluoexitine (Prozac). 19 now, she thankfully is off of the latter and only sporadically takes the former as needed.
My own diagnosis came about in the middle of my life exploding. We were losing our home because I had just lost my third job in a row. These were all jobs that I thought should have been a cakewalk. What I didn't understand was that they all required a high degree of organization to be successful. If you are ADHD, you'll understand that inability in this area is a hallmark of the disorder.
I thought I was suffering cognitive decline. I went to see my Dr. who is 20 years my junior and a Namibian ex-pat with no bias either way regarding ADHD. He asked me about those jobs I was most successful at and the ones I had just been fired from. He immediately drilled in on the fact that the ones I had thrived in were extremely mentally stimulating and required a quick climb up a steep learning curve with creative ability as opposed to the latter which paid more but were routine and required organization.
I did the questionnaire. After looking at it, and knowing my attitude towards the disorder, he said "Your daughter was just diagnosed with ADHD. Where in the hell do you think she got that from?"
He then informed me that it's about 75 to 80% inheritable and told me to go home and research the disorder thoroughly. After I was done that I was to try one of my daughter's pills. He told me that it would either work immediately to organize my thoughts and wrap my head around my current situation, or I would just feel a little more energetic. Either way, I'd know.
I did exactly as directed. When the Dexi kicked in I got that thousand mile stare when you understand what ADHD looks like in adults and realize that it explains your entire life to that moment.
I've you this because you mentioned that your dad an sister were diagnosed, so yeah, there is a very strong chance that you have it as well.

i know this is an old thread but i would be super curious to hear your thoughts on studying and pursuing architecture! i have studied architecture for three years now and at times i’ve felt absolutely sick of it. i chose the career when i was in a bad place mentally i guess and i let other people’s opinion influence me a lot. there was no real passion whatsoever, at least not during the first two years or so. there was also that time constraint you mentioned too... however fast forward, some months ago i decided enough is enough and applied to study psychology. i was accepted. but now i am just torn. i kinda thought this could be more aligned to what i actually like... but i’m not sure. there’s constant push and pull - what would be reasonable vs what would be best for me. sorry for this ramble. i’m just so tired of doubting myself and feeling like i never can be content.

@@parus_1671 Architecture is very Te field, so it might be quite draining for them (need to be critique openly, strict environment, high workload etc) but in the long term its good for INFPs in developing their Te. Im an INTP(?) and pursuing architecture too for a really simple reason; developing creativity to improve my thinking. I like the creativity aspect in this field and learning the concept of structures or generally thereotical knowledge is fascinating to me. Unfortunately when it comes to make things real or hands on work (which is the main point of this field of course) im really struggling. I experience trouble in focusing into one idea and creating something 'fix' as i always jumping into one idea to another idea and let previous idea left underdeveloped that lead to difficulty in model making process (blame Ne?). My lecturer even told me that I stuck in my head too much. I try to follow her advice but I just couldnt, plus with zero passion. Anyway in contrary to most Se or Ni users, I observed that they seems to have no trouble in idea development due to their focus nature especially when pair with Te which somehow explains why INTJ being called Architect in 16p lol. Now I cant help but coming to the conclusion that Architecure is not suitable for INxPs nature, unless they really have a real passion because architecture is a type of courses that someone can't join only 'for fun'. This field surely require a huge effort; to get out from our mind and make things real. Our brain are not wired this way as we think abstractly and creating things conceptually (writing is a good example), not much in reality. Im not saying we couldnt create real concrete things, just hard.
I prefer to deal the world from distance so im thinking to change into computer science, IT that require passive activity or probably social sciences but social science have lack job oppoturnity in my country. I believe INFP can relate to "dealing with life from distance" in some level (Se blind), but hey at least they could imagine themselves as social workers (dealing with life directly) while im not as it would be too much pressure for my inferior Fe despite how appealing social studies to me. I dont know if its applicable to INTP generally, because exposing or showing my kindness is enough to make me anxious. Helping people indirectly by not letting people know who i am is the better option.
By the way in your case, before you change to Psychology, do you ever think about another option?

@@aonaohafa thank you for taking the time to reply! sorry in advance if my reply will be too long haha
yeah a big part of architecture is pure Te (management etc) even though at a first glance it could seem more like an Ni or Ne (creativity etc) type of field. i'm not sure of my type (i keep getting INFJ on tests but idk, i can relate a lot to INFP and even INTP) but Te and Se are definitely my weakest functions. and they are for sure important in architecture... however as you said, architecture is a great channel to improve those aspects! i've gotten so much better at taking critique and managing stress even though i still struggle with those more than most people in my course haha...
i've always been better at creating things conceptually i suppose. especially languages, writing and reading have always been easy and fun for me. (now this needs a sidenote once again, english is not my native language so if this text is a mess it would have to do with that lol.) but i'm usually bad at leaving things be and so even though i've at times had zero interest to this field and even hatred towards myself for making a decision to pursue this based on so stupid reasons, such as other people's opinion, i've just banged my head against a wall and continued... that was very bad for my wellbeing and i was miserable to be honest.
i've had problems with indecisiveness regarding ideas as well but probably even bigger problem for me is that i get stuck to one idea and obsessively pursue it even though it clearly has things that could be better. but that's the hard balance between reasonable amounts of work and perfectionism.
that's interesting you mention you prefer dealing with life from a distance. i've thought about that recently - is helping people directly just some kind of ego dream i have when in reality it'd exhaust me? i'm not sure but i very much can imagine myself doing some sort of counceling etc. but at this point i think i probably have to give psychology a shot and try it for a bit to see. get out of my head for once... sigh.
i have thought about another options as well. in the past especially i was very Ne-like and wanted to pursue many things from astronomy to sociology and economics to engineering. i don't want to close doors necessarily but i think engineering or very number-based sciences wouldn't be a good fit after all. i really really love languages but it has the thing you mentioned as well, not good job market. but i'd most likely really enjoy that type of field - aka everything architecture (traditionally) is not lol.
anyway whatever i end up doing from now on i can safely say that these years with architecture haven't been completely in vain. i hope i can apply my not-good but better-than-before Te and Se skills to whatever i might end up doing. i've even had some ideas on how to combine these two fields... but who knows.

    - I love photography, writing and acting. Photography, because it allows me to capture a moment in time. It makes me really appreciate all the little things, which I sometimes tend to forget in a world where people seem to compete with time in a race they could never win. It allows me to pause for a while. Also, editing pictures makes me able to envision the world in a different way. It gives me the amazing gift of letting a magical world emerge from a dull, empty place. It makes my imagination turn into something real. I love writing, because it allows me to process my feelings so incredibly well. Writing lets me escape into a different world, which isn’t necessarily better than ours or in any way different. It’s just that it provides me with the insides I am so desperately longing for. I just want to understand the world a little better and see a little more of what is actually out there cause even though we go through the same experiences and see the same things we still perceive it differently. Writing helps me understand all the different angles and depths of human behavior. Acting allows me to witness the world through different eyes. Since I’m really interested in finding out what the world is really about, acting enables me to feel and see the world from a different point of view. It’s like you’re able to live another life and feel things that you’ve never felt before. It’s like entering a new world, where you DO feel fear, but it’s a different kind of fear. By collecting all this different experiences and emotions, I feel like I can see more of what there really is to the world. We all claim to know what ‘being afraid’ feels like, but is that really true? We name emotions, say that we relate to them, but yet our worlds are so entirely different. Art makes me see a different world with different values and different people. It lets me see a different reality. By playing different people and characters I get to experience what it really means to live and die, see and be blinded, run and be thrown back, love and be hated, to see but never really see, feel but never really feel, to understand but never fully understand.

I am an INFP, retired psychiatric technician/nurse here, I worked in maximum security forensic psychiatric facilities with Sexually Violent Predators and serial killers/mass murderers. Before that, I worked as a Hospice case manager in Alaska, caring for dying patients who lived on the streets, before that I worked CCU, E.R. before that I was a music major! I studied voice and clarinet, the reason I changed was that I took care of my dying father when I was 23 years old, I realized that nursing was my real deal. I had studied music at the university since age 10. I also create art, but nursing is my real passion. Retired now after a head injury at work (patient smacked me and rolled me to the ground) but I loved nursing.

  • @ninaholm877

I am a nurse because my parents thought it might be a decent job for me. And I was practising at an elderly home before studies and liked it. Originally I was meant to be a doctor, but I didn't follow thru. You know you have these expectations you must fill. I originally wanted to go to study history or German at university. But I was told it is a dum idea, because what can I do after I graduate? Teaching is the only thing you can do then, I was told. And at that point I didn't want to teach. I was young and I was lost.
Things that I have found that I like is advertising and selling stuff to people. Advertising because I am great at picking up people's needs and I am fast to learn what sells. And I find it exciting. I am quite good at selling as well because I can read what people need and say the right things. So it is not a bad choice either. You can also feel helpful while doing that. You don't have to be doing something really extraordinary to be able interact with people in a right way. Because it is you who make the thing extraordinary while doing it.
While being a nurse I learnt that I was really good with people. Especially the depressed ones. I felt that by being around them and listening to them, I had the power to make them feel better. I learnt that I somehow was good at motivating people who had lost all motivation and were really down. And I felt great while being able to do that.
But I was very bad with my hands, I hated all the things you had to to with your hands while being a nurse. I didn't want to touch the patients when you had to do the medical procedures. You know what I mean. But instead I loved to caress the older people, the ones who can't communicate anymore. The ones who have lost their memory and ability to walk. Who spend their days in bed just laying there. I used to sing to them. I sang old songs which I knew were played when they were children or young. So that they would feel safe and for a minute have something to hold on to. Because they couldn't remember anything, but you could see they remembered the songs. And it was like they would have a movie going on in their heads, they laid eyes closed and talked sometimes. And you could see they were in some place, probably a memory from childhood or something.
I wanted to make them feel as comfortable as possible, I wanted to read the signs that would tell me if they were feeling good or bad. In the hospital the nurses don't have time to do that, that is another problem. The time. You have to be really efficient so you can't stop to listen as much as you would like to.
After a few years I got sick. I never recovered fully and returned to my job as a nurse. I have an own company now for some years. I find it exciting and like it, I am my own boss. I decide my working hours. It is better for my health. It is not as much money, but it is good enough. And I can be as creative as I like.
I do regret that I didn't follow my passion and go to study further at university. Now I feel I am too old for that and I don't have the energy anymore. I think it is really important for INFPs to follow their passion. So whatever your passion is, try to find out how you could make money out of it. The worst possible thing is to let other people decide for you because it doesn't work. So do not listen if they tell you following your passion is a bad idea and you will never make any money out of it. Follow your heart.

I'm an INFP and I have been a nurse for 46 years. I know, I will be retiring in the next year or so. One thing that is nice, I don't have to compromise my integrity because of the nature of the work. That has been so important. I am not saying that I haven't had my share of narcissistic bosses, but working through the system always using care of patients as the priority can help neutralize these toxic ppl ( plus a great union that I hold dear). I kind of view my work partly as performance art. Nursing also provides that much needed socialization that we crave but I find personally hard to maintain. And I never have to worry about my awkwardness because the script practically writes itself. All you need to do is ask the patient about themselves, then you are off running. This profession has also improved my confidence and helped me be more organized. I am going to.be sad to leave ( this last year of work I have been very nostalgic)

I grew up watching cartoons (that's where I learned speaking English too) and I was so into it even to this point. Watching documentaries about showrunners and creator telling that it's the best job ever. I eventually took up animation. I was still full of passion even in college. Then I got into the animation industry as an entry level artist. And boy was it not how I imagined it would be. We were overworked for a below average pay, and we were chasing deadlines after deadlines, plus the work environment brushes off so much questionable work ethics. I was miserable. And part of it is because, if you are the creator, then you have the creative freedom; but as a person working on someone else's work, you do nothing but follow what should be done and that's it. It kinda turned the whole "dream job" idea into "I'm not so sure anymore". Don't get me wrong, I still love animation but I hated how everything was behind closed doors. It was basically a sweatshop. I left the studio not even a year.
Now I do freelance work, still in animation and illustrations, which is a thumbs up for doing it your style. Plus I got to meet great people along the way. It's also a landmark moment for me because I feel like I'm taking my direction in my own hands. It's not perfect though. It's still challenging, but it tests you how much you want it.

Hi there! I have a question for you. I grew up watching and loving cartoons too, and I couldn't understand why my friends would like live-action shows like the ones on Disney channel (this is true even now haha). So I'm a senior in high school who is interested in illustration and concept art/character design. I figured that being in the "sweatshop" animation industry is not for me and that being freelance and creating my own style/voice first before taking any gigs is very important to me (also representation for my culture and identity). I also aspire to start an online shop for stickers and prints, and also a youtube channel for live painting as a calm space for others. I know these are things I need in my life.
My question is, do you have another job that you enjoy as financial support? I feel like if I only depend on a freelance career, my creativity would be stifled and I would be really stressed. I've been thinking of being a doctor in integrative medicine (background of both naturopathic medicine and modern medicine) but I'm not sure...it takes so many years of effort and there are so so many paths to get there, I don't even know what major I want or what college to go to...it feels like so much it's overwhelming. I also want to minor in psychology, but I don't know.
For both illustration and the naturopathic side of health, it feels like the world is against me as well as the people around me, saying that these careers aren't stable or lucrative. I wish I was just interested in something that is lucrative 100%, but I guess the world isn't like that for INFPs.

Personally, I'm the INFP mediator type and I found myself being more inclined to jobs that involved interaction with other people but in a way that would help them further themselves...I had the opportunity and made opportunities for myself in which I would have the ability to teach others, since I like drawing that's the subject I focused on and I study everyday ways to improve in this subject which is how I came to the conclusion that as much as I wanted to deny this for myself I really do enjoy teaching about art, and creating art. I also found that instead of the usual form of therapy signing up for singing lessons in a place where they would push you to perform in front of others to see how you've progressed in this journey was very nurturing and healing for me. It might be the case for others that they cannot find solace in just talking to people about their problems because it creates redundancy and it just makes whatever is haunting them a deeper thing that they cannot seem to get out of so looking for alternatives in the art fields could be a solution to finding some sort of mental peace. Trying new things all the time is one thing that also helps a lot or learning a new language, since I find that I feel more useful and valuable if I'm integrating more knowledge into my life, but always keep it light-hearted and don't take it too seriously always remember that you made the choice to be there and if you feel stressed about it then what's the point? Hope this helps another fellow INFP who feels a bit lost. I hope you find your sense of purpose and self ♥

I'm a User Experience (UX) Designer. My whole job, at its core, is about helping people solve issues and achieve goals by simply designing great experiences for them. It is the perfect job for me as an INFP - I get to be creative, understand and talk to all sorts of people, empathise with people and problem solve. The thing I like the most about being a UX Designer is that my role explores the full gamut of introvert-to-extravert. I get time to be alone and reflect and go internally, and I get to engage with people and share what I have learnt. I highly recommend looking into UX Design if you're unsure you've found the right path for you.

Omg I'm 21 yrs old and would have graduated my BA Hons in Communication Studies now, if not for the COVID19 lockdown 😌 and I'm an aspiring UX designer but I'm l'm aways confused and doubting myself, as to whether I'm pursuing the right career since a lot of sources have told that it'sa job with a high stress level and it seems really tough to break into the field and requires a certain level of agression. Im honestly so happy I came across your comment because I always look for 'designer' as a career option for my personality type be it MBTI or ennagaram but I never see it😔

I think I found a way out for this "jack of all trades" sympthom. I have been developing myself in music, studying languages, a bit of computing/design, and also other interests like psychology and arts... The more I develop such interests and seam them together, the more I see alternatives and opportunities of job and also hobbies taking form. Currently I am a teacher of English and struggle to make use of all these abilities developed through time. I am sure that if I had spent more energy specializing those habilities and made it stronger competences and also made it seamless as I could, I would reach higher ranks or get access to other jobs/hobbies... the absence of good results generates lack of inspiration until the unwillingness to keep on practicing. My advice is: Always sharp your axes, but don't use the sharpening as an excuse to avoid the cutting.

I'm an infp Male and the best job I've had was working as a barista at Starbucks. it's not what youd expect from an infp but it was incredibly fun. the inner charismatic persona comes out when you have the protection of the apron. you get to connect with various people, learn about different people and establish a connection in the few minutes you get with them. hands down what was best.
however, it doesn't hold a good future; the income isnt anywhere close to sustainable:(

Connorfied WHUT I feel you so much. When I look back, the job that actually made me happy and excited was when I was working at a bubble tea shop while being in college. The little interactions between the customers and I really motivated me to go to work. The ‘real jobs’ I got after graduation that required me to work 9-5 and sit in front of a computer either by myself or next to some other people just killed me deeply inside. Those jobs never lasted over a month, and I can never admit to myself or anyone that the barista job was the one that really made me happy. Thank you for your sharing and I don’t feel so alone now

INFP here! Wanted to comment in case it helps someone... GREAT video - also felt like he was talking just to me lol. I've felt lost most of my life. Back in June I took a week long trip to the mountains of CO with my fiance (ENFJ). We hiked, white water rafted, just explored the towns - outside for a week! When we came back... that SAME night I had the strongest urge I've ever had. I didn't have to think - I just pulled out my largest canvas and painted. It was not even a choice - my body HAD to do it. For the next few hours it was nothing but me and the canvas and when I was done, for the first time in my life I actually liked what I created. I felt proud and filled to the brim with happy at my creation. Then I went back to work the next day... and 5 months later nothing else has been created - I'm just exhausted when I get home. I work in sales...which requires 50 hr weeks (which I've now heard multiple times is horrible for INFP). BUT there are many times I get to help people and that's what I'm trying to focus on until I can figure out what else to do. Moral of the story - I feel like our type heals SO quickly in nature. Somehow I've gotta figure out how to make being in nature a DAILY thing.
Prev jobs: short-wall cubicle work in giant building (developed migraines, overall dread every day of work), Paraeducator (30 hrs/wk, but with special needs kids=exhausting), Customer service (good and bad), GM of small hotel (owner was toxic so that didn't work, but LOVED that position otherwise!), Catering (awesome, but I worked for an amazing couple who's no longer doing it), Camp counselor (by far the best job I've ever had...unfortunately couldn't live on the pay), AND still searching. xoxo

I really struggled to find a job. It was my ESTJ wife that pushed me though grad school and now I’m a therapist.
It’s a great job for an INFP cause it’s extremely intimate and deep. It’s really odd but I go to work to recharge... usually. It can be draining but less so than working retail or customer resource. It’s very fulfilling and I wake up happy to go to work most days.
    Love the videos!
I have worked sales, janitorial, data entry, security, grave digging (heavy machinery), demolition and substitute teaching.
I like jobs where I can make my own hours. Where people come to me rather then me going to them. I love to deal with people in crisis. I love to help people in a meaningful way. My empathy and sensitivity really pay off in the mental health field. Most of my other jobs offered little of what I needed.

As an INFP, I've decided to become a writer. I always knew I would be one, but this dream was delayed for so long because unfortunately writing in cafe's doesn't pay the bills. I am working in a 9 - 5 now, but I'm working so hard on my first children's book and young adult novel that I'm hoping to eventually do this as a full-time career and work from anywhere in the world and having others enjoy my creations. I just can't stand going to the same place every day and answering emails. It's just not serving me and I need something that motivates me.

Maybe this video just saved me. I used to work in a job that I really disliked or let's face it: hated (accounting and taxes). I quit my job and started studying something that I care about. I am currently in my first semester. But due to the current situation I lost all my motivation for a while and was very close to quitting and trying to get a job again. I had already written my application and I was planing on sending it out tomorrow. I had that thought in the back of my mind that I was making a big mistake, but I think I couldn't really think straight due to a lack of connecting to people. I believe this video was the hit on the head that I needed. Writing down 5 things I hated about my old job really helped to show me clearly how I was about to go back into a very wrong direction. And I didn't stop there and also strategized as to what I have to change to become and stay motivated. You're a hero for me right now - thank you!!!

It’s such a relief to know this is normal among infps and knowing you’re not the only one having existential crisis. I agree on the part where Sherman said we want to find a job where it resonates who we are as a person and is in line with our principles bec we have this tendency to ask the meaning behind all the things we’re doing if it’s worth it in the bigger part of the world. I’m happy to say that I’ve found this sense of fulfillment and happiness in the makeup industry and in entrepreneurship. Reason is bec in makeup, I love the feeling of being able to enhance the beauty of the person and expressing my creative side. At the same time, seeing them happy with the results made me happy too or simply just watching behind the scenes of a photoshoot and seeing your hardwork put into display is indeed very fulfilling. I also went into entrepreneurship and found out that in being an entrepreneur, I have flexible working hrs while at the same time I can see the end to end results of my idea put into reality and it’s very satisfying indeed. I also love the idea of being a psychologist but that’s another story. It is very true then that we are most alive when we are doing jobs that involves connecting and helping people while at the same time being able to breathe in our own pace and not be dictated by rigid office rules or mom or dad or world 😂

Thank you for sharing your story, this is really valuable! In my case, as for many INFPs, "career" is the most difficult thing in my life, my biggest struggle. When I was young, I had so many interests, it was hard to decide what to do, so I studied molecular biology and a few terms of medicine as I thought cancer research is something I could serve humanity best. After 6 years as a cancer researcher, I left this career path because I was so shy and couldn´t deal with frequent presentations at symposia, congresses or even in smaller circles of scientists, I just felt miserable already weeks ahead of a presentation. lost 10 lbs of weight, stomach cramps, insomnia, etc. Then I found a job in pharma as a medical writer, which is what I´m still doing today - it has been a path of extreme workload, massive overtime (50-60 hours a week are normal), and I have already experienced several burnouts, from which I have never fully recovered. My secret call is being a writer - not a medical writer which I am now - but a novellist. I have a manuscript that I wrote during a sabattical 7 years ago, but it´s still in my drawer, unpublished, and needs further work. In recent years, I have been saving up 70% of my income, became a fanatic stock market investor and joined the FIRE movement, ie, I hope to retire early from pharma within the next 2 years. And then finally be free and say goodbye to this horrible stress and corporate structures that are killing me inside. I´m in my early 40ies now and can safety say I have not lived my life in a smart way, there has always been so much fear regarding finances (I grew up in a highly dysfunctional and poor household) which kept me in this dreadful career. As a student, I tried out different jobs, and actually a position as a caretaker in a care center for autistic people was perhaps the most pleasant job I ever had in my life - I was basically playing with the autistic kids, went for walks with the adults, cooked for them, etc. I love to take care of people, especially cook healthy food for them and make sure they are well fed and happy. ;-) Years ago I was diagnosed with a very high IQ after my psychiatrist sent me to do an IQ test, and this together with my high sensitivity might be so typical for the INFP. My life feels as if I have never found the right path and early retirement will be a rescue, but where fulfillment lies, I still don`t know exactly. Thank you Matt for your wonderful videos, I enjoy them a lot. Btw, your voice is mesmerizing, really beautiful.

I'm somewhere between an INFP & an INTP, both being extremely hard to exist on this planet. I don't know anyone else like me. I am surrounded by family friends and strangers who act like I'm this enigma because I don't have any of their values. I'm very spiritual, intuitive, empathic and I live to create. I feel like I belong no where. Going back to school is on the table for me possibly again and I'm trying to decide if traditional schooling setup is gonna keep me invested. I have got to work on my career and money sector even though I could care less about money! I bitch about even having to pay attention to my own physical body! I just feel like pure creative energy and I wish I had the freedom and space to express that without having to worry about my survival. I feel hardcore INFP!

I am an INFP-T and my only true interests are video games, tarot and writing. I also have experiences with anxiety, depression, and alcohol abo use DA and SA survivor as well. I recently had been thinking about getting a degree in psychology to help those who have gone through the same things. I am also the single mother of an autistic child.
I have found that the cubicle 9 to 5 simply do not work for me and there was always a reason why I was let go so I took that as a sign, sometimes my son’s special needs prevent me from going into an office every single day.
Sometimes I hate the fact at 33 that I don’t have a set career and everyone else around me does, sort of makes me feel like a loser at times. I am doing a lot of reading about INFP and psychology and I’m starting to understand a lot of things.

I’ve also been a hairdresser (making people pretty lights up their soul!) A makeup artist, currently a flight attendant and hypnotherapist.
I love seeing the world and also helping people wade through their subconscious.
Now i’m considering going back to school (at 36) online of course, for psychology because I know I could help in deeper ways and also research into the mind interests me. I’ll also be moving back to Tokyo 🗼and commuting to work in the US (flying in) and then teaching on the side for a while and see how that works out. Japan has always had a piece of my heart ❤️, this will be my 3rd time moving back.

I love the part where you said Infps help people feel good about their inner worlds... that is a truth nugget right there. I love that💕 I followed that 9-5 template for years and my last 9-5 was about 2 years ago. I worked in a factory in MI making car parts. It nearly did me in. I was stressed at a level of crazy like I have never been at. All the structure, unable to share my ideas or opinions, the major clique that operated there of terrible workers being pushed up while the hard workers were treated like crap, having to go to bat for some of those hard workers with the higher ups only to be patronized and ignored and it culminated in having to stand up to the GM of the company. It took a long time to recover from that experience for me. But in the end the take away is I better know myself because it was while I was working there that I started diving into Mbti out of sheer survival sake. And also I am no longer afraid to stand for myself because I can say hey I stood up to the GM of a company so “ what you got?” :) Thanks for sharing all the great points!!!

I have come to learn that I prefer minimal interaction with others when I'm working. To me, it would be a form of torture to have to go to work each day with the same people who want to talk and expect interaction all day long, day after day. So I am self-employed and I really love it.

This was way better than the counselling session I received where I was asked to list out the advantages and disadvantages of my current career path and other options I was considering. It makes more sense to list the tasks you have enjoyed in the past, ones who haven't and why. Thanks for this video, will get on the questions you've given to ponder on.

I only discovered a few years ago that I was an INFP. My parents believed in the "suck it up and just do it" life approach so they were unable to truly understand my personality. After university, they just seemed to give up and accept that I'm "different". Both of my parents were classically successful people, so, for years, I was frustrated that I couldn't match their success and couldn't even develop the necessary attitude at work. No one in my family particularly believed in understanding people on a complex level (too occupied with making money or their personal problems), so I really felt alone for most of my life. Understanding what an INFP is has allowed me to take some steps in my own direction and appreciate my own approach to life even if my family doesn't.

I've never ever thought about what jobs suit my personality. This is really interesting take. It's cool to see so many different career pathways are available. I absolutely agree with so many points here. As for me (INFP obviously), I'm SUPER lucky. Became a doctor when I was 24, and now at 30, I work around 3.5 days a week on average - lots of free time for gaming, DnD, art, music, etc, I've got flexible working hours - I can work more or less as much as I want so if I'm feeling burnt out i'll just go on holiday and if I'm energised I'll work 6 days a week. Happily, I make bank, own my own house, and have all the freedoms to do what I want with myself. Job satisfaction is high and I thrive in being able to help people. My patients really appreciate me, and the extra effort I always go to for them so it's just an endlessly, self fulfilling and rewarding experience. The healthcare industry I think is a great career path for INFPs.

Your summary of the teaching position is 100% spot on. I've never felt more balanced and fulfilled than when I started teaching.
I greatly enjoy walking into my middle school classroom not knowing what to expect but knowing we will all grow a little once the day is over. I've never been a morning person and I still am not but waking up at 5am to teach is not a problem. I do think my happiness has a lot to do with the administration at my school because we are allowed a lot of freedom and they treat us like educational professionals. I don't think I'd be as happy as I am if I was micro-managed the way many teachers are.

Wow, I found this video at the perfect time!! I have a passion for music, and love learning Spanish. I went to school to study music but quit because it felt too competitive for me, plus I’m blind and play music by ear, but they taught sight reading. Anyway, years later I discoverd my love for languages and now I’m studying to be a Spanish interpreter. I also like teaching English. I’m about to graduate and have no idea where I want to work. I’m realizing I don’t want a 9 to 5 job, but I want something where I can help people. This video really has me thinking now...

I was 29 when I realized that I wanted some things (car, home, my own privacy), and to have those things, I had to go to work - and I don't mean finding a job, but I had to face the entire process of negating all the bad consequences of my previous choices. I simply looked into my passion, computers, and I said: I will be a developer. On year and half later, after much hardship, I am a developer and I have my home and privacy, and working for the car ;). This process was hard, but I could not failed because I felt it was like a trip to an other place. I do a step, then an other, then an other. Before that, I was a failure at making a career. Now... I basically won the freedom I always wanted.

The following is just my experience in life summed up thus far. No more important than the next.
I'm 23 and going through everything an INFP I guess goes through.
I'm still searching for a semblance of a purpose and currently bouncing from interest to interest.
As mentioned in the video I do like helping people. (warning novel alert)
Throughout high school I was working as a tutor, involved as a girlguide/boyscout (equivalent) instructor and was head prefect for the my school before graduating.
Since then I went into studying to become a registered nurse. At this time I was working as a secretary for a kids daycare and volunteering in soup kitchens for the disadvantaged community on a weekly basis.
A couple of years of this I still felt like none of this was enough and spiralled into a dark hole. So I decided to up the anti.
At 21 I became executive secretary for the non profit organisation. A community homework program coordinator that went on and won best community program a year later in a cohort of over 300 active community programs. A youth leader to 8 branches of groups around my city. Leading style: unapologetically unconventional.
Placed the studying on the back burner and swapped it to part time after two years.
In my off time I'd fulfill requests and designs from people, read, take my dogs for a walk, play the piano/guitar, learn something, knit or just game.
    (End of Novel)
Now I apologise if I appear to be supercilious but to conclude let me just say. I have never felt more lost and broken than I am now. Mentally and physically exhausted that I've decided to step down from all these roles now to just work a mundane job in the new coming year. (Burnt out I guess).
I have no questions or valuable advice but reading through these comments and seeing this video has reassured me that my mind is not chaotic (as most people often tell me), just complex. It's taken me a while to acknowledge my personality and it mainly stems from just not wanting to be categorised. I'm an INFP that most people mistaken as an Extrovert but human interaction is draining I'd much prefer to take my dogs camping to sleep in a forest and write a book for the remainder of my life than speak with another person again. Don't know if anyone can relate but I felt compelled to write this nonsense about myself. Will most likely return to delete this during the week after some over thinking but thank you creator for making this space.

4 years ago, I wrote this comment. I caught myself coming back to this video for some reason. I'm 27 now. Working a job I love with great work-life balance (still a position pertaining to helping people but not as nurse lol).
So much has happened for I guess the world in the last 4 years. Not just me. As one would have it. Covid struck a couple of months after I wrote this comment. Crazy to think about.
My focus and priorities all changed. In these four years, I've lost my nan and pops, a dear close aunty who was more a mother to me than my own and both of my precious furbabies (one 14yrs and other 15yrs).
In these 4 years, I changed jobs 4 times. I haven’t been in my current role for long. However, I have never experienced this sense of peace with any other role I've had to date. With the constant need to prove myself. To overwork. To go above and beyond. This role has not asked that of me.
I look back at that time 4 years back and see a naive child navigating the world completely blind.
I've definitely become alot more reserved. Always have been selective so I only have 2 friends in my close circle. It works out plenty when you have to ration time for them who are extroverted to the letter.
I'm in a better space than when I was in this original comment. And it's taken alot of work to get here so my goal is simply to maintain it.

Everything you will learn will be behind the chair skill wise. As stylists and barbers are a dime a dozen( look at the radius) you have to decide why your clients come to you and continue business with you " what makes you different?" I do understand where there are more challenges than ever before with the pandemic, use the time to gain knowledge! There are hundreds and thousands of platforms everywhere where you can build yourself. INFP here.. worked in government for 8 years (yes, mostly in a cubicle), left to explore behavioral health in a hospital.. hated it, came back to my cubicle. Happy as a clam. I write and draw and dive into music world heavily on the side. Used to only be able to get through the 9-5 knowing I had my writing to come home to and hoped it would take over, felt a ton of pressure from that. Still write and sure, would love for it to take over the income but am much happier now without that self-induced pressure.
