  • This vintage railway film was produced by British Transport Films in 1977. With Peter Purves, of television 'Blue Peter' fame as our guide, we are taken on a rapid but very full tour of railway activities. Starting off in the comfort of the High Speed Train, we then move on through electrification, track relaying, rush hour at Waterloo, freight trains and Sealink, and enjoy a glimpse of railway history. A fascinating introduction to the subject of trains.

      Many thanks for the information! What is your opinion on the way that trains and carriages are now made in other countries and that we now import them. There was a time when we made all of our own locos and carriages. What is behind this, if it is actually true.

    • @nkt1
      @nkt1 2 года назад +3

      @@memyself1566 Privatisation is probably the main culprit. For the first couple of years, no new trains were ordered until things settled down, and the British manufacturers never recovered from this lull. For example, BREL, which incidentally built the APT and the locomotive for the 225 (Class 91), closed down in 1996, due to lack of orders.

      Many thanks for your comprehensive reply.
      I always had the impression that it was a structured plan that led to privatisation, but I could be wrong.
      Much the same, I believe, with putting the electricity, gas and water companies into the hands of the international corporations .

    In 1975 I was catching the London train from Crewe station. It was very crowded, I found myself in a last-minute rush for the one remaining seat with a tall, good-looking man with collar-length hair, it was the seventies - buckaroo! When I sat down on the chair, I looked up and realised it was none other than Peter Purves! It was at the height of his Blue Peter fame! He said "You jammy bastard!" and quick as a flash, I replied, "Don't be blue, Peter!" Needless to say, I had the last laugh, now f*** off!

      One wonders whether this actually happened or whether you were being somewhat fantastical about the situation. I wonder why he was on that train anyway!
      I would’ve thought that somebody, such as the BBC, would’ve bought him a first class seat.

    A compilation of BTF's best bits, those shots of green Peaks and the two tone green 47 @08:06look like they must be from the late sixties; still, it was still applicable in 1977 I suppose
