Definitely King Gizzard. Although microtones might be hard to pull off.
You know what'd be a fun twist on this format? Play all the variations first, so the audience has to guess, before revealing at the end what original riff you're working from.

Seconded. This is a great idea! You could even encourage people to comment if they got it before the end and when they figured it out.
Absolutely great suggestions both for the guess and encouraging the audience to comment. As someone who rarely comments at all, this would actually make me engage.

Genesis!! That was a great surprise. I still close my eyes and try to guess through the bands. I was proud to get Fear Factory. Korn was a bit easier to pick out along with Pantera. But so many others were a challenge. Great playing sir!

One of my Mums favourite bands. I much prefer their more recent stuff but I appreciate the prog for sure and they're a great band :)
It's great to see this series back, I would love to see you making some Brazilian metal bands like Sepultura, Angra, Korzus, Sarcófago, Krisium, Project46, Crypta, Nervosa, Kryour, Oficina G3...

The Exodus and Meshuggah styles were my favorites! Always hoping to see a Project 86 riff or style in one of these as well. As for a random suggestion, how about The Elephant Song from Barney? The rhythm section is surprisingly metal.
I would love to see you 20 different styles of Working Man by Rush. That would be utterly bonkers.

My favorites are Carrion Fairy, Piss Angel and Naked Trees, definitely something from the early albums.

One hilarious suggestion for next time, and I know this isn't metal or even rock, not even guitar lol, would be turning any riff in the style of Brad Mehldau.
If you don't know this dude, he is well known for turning pop and rock songs (from the likes of Radiohead, Nirvana or Rush) into jazz masterpieces.
Either him or Tigran Hamasyan. Two of the absolute best living pianists on this planet.
