It was fantastic and so refreshing to see a new film that had all the great aspects of early American cinema when films were an art form. In the West I think we underappreciate the impact and significance of Godzilla to Japanese culture. This film in my opinion was a cinematic expression of Japan finally coming to peace with the war and moving into the future. A new reborn Japan. I think the film was a way of telling the Japanese people that they can put the war behind them and while they will always face the existential threat from outside, they can rise to the purpose, confront it and defeat it even if there is loss and destruction. Amazing message to me anyways.

Movie theaters are special to me. My family was poor growing up, and about the only indulgence we could give ourselves on holidays and birthdays was to go see a movie in theaters. I also went with my friends when there was some cool movie coming out that we were all looking forward to. Just stepping foot in a theater immediately brings back a flood of feelings connected to these happy experiences of childhood. For that reason, I will continue to visit theaters, for the movies, but even more so, for the memories. Even if theaters die, I will go down with the ship. I'll be the last guy, sitting in the last showing of the last movie in the last theater; I owe that much to a place that has been my happy place, that has transported me to countless worlds, each one leaving an impression on my mind and my life.
Movie theaters mean the exact same thing to me. When I was a kid, going to the movie theater was a special occasion. A reward for being a good kid all week. I still love going to the theater and I always will.

Here in France we had it only 2 days in theaters, 7th and 8th December. I was lucky enough to get to theaters with a friend on 8th. And I was so happy to watched it in 4Dx, it was my best experience in theaters this year and these last years, with Oppenheimer. I am so so sad that I can't watch it again, it's a movie I would love to experience in Imax with my brothers. I just can't understand why it was only 2 days in France T-T .

I swear multiple times I’ve tried to zone out while thinking about the movie and each time I try to reminisce about scenes from it, my brain can’t properly recreate the impact and awe of each scene, hell even the human scenes aren’t nearly as impactful in my head. So in conclusion: because this movie is literally too good for my brain to think about in its full scale, I will A) try thinking about new scenes minus one godzilla could be in And B) try to watch as much minus one footage on a daily basis as possible

I'm really in the same boat hehe. I went to see G-1 a second time tonight, I didn't regret it. I'm not someone who normally goes to see films twice because of the expense, but I didn't go to many films this year. So rather than watch some mediocre movie, might as well watch the same awesome film twice! Just as epic and emotional the second time.
If any movie was worth seeing in theaters this entire year, it was this one. Yeah, see it as many times as you can. I'm hoping they extend it. Otherwise, this weekend is it for it.
@@bushidoblues9302 by the way, it's awesome that you're a Ghost of Tsushima fan too! Saw your little reviews, I seriously hope a japanese-language film adaptation is just as embraced by North Americans. G-1 broke the ground and paved the road for great success for Ghost. 😀

Bro, all I have to say is I know how you feel and this film is the Godzilla film so many of us have waited SO DAMN LONG to see. Also, I get how you feel when it comes to talking to people about movies like this (or really samurai films in general). You’re not alone, cause people like me, and you are in the same spot.
I’ve seen it 3 times once in standard and twice in 4DX I’m planning on seeing it two more times before they pull it from 4DX theaters. The sound track, the story, the classic look and fear of Godzilla is what really adds to this movie tenfold. I’ve already order a poster for it and won a free one as well. This movie is beyond great this is going to be a timeless rendition that redefines the entertainment industry shifting to be more favorable towards Japanese’s hollywood over American Hollywood.
I listened to the score the other night and admittedly got emotional when I came to the Godzilla Suite. I've heard it a thousand times over years of watching all the Godzilla films. But it hit differently this time because it plays over not the Japanese military defending the country, but a ragtag group of civilian volunteers, survivors of a war they lost, once again called to defend their homeland because no one else can. It's a beautiful way to connect with the film and the universe. This film has surprised me and nothing surprises me, hyperbole notwithstanding.
Saw it a couple of days ago and I think I have to see it at LEAST one more time (in IMAX) before it leaves the theatres. Just an amazing film. Not just the special effects and the story and the cinematography… but the ACTING is top notch. Kamiki Ryunosuke (who plays the lead character) deserves an Oscar nomination without a doubt. I bet that Hiroyuki Sanada and Ken Watanabe (two powerhouse Japanese actors) are looking at this and regretting not being part of it. Ha.
Beside Godzilla in G -1.0 is the best aquatic monster, Noriko is the perfect woman IMO. Gave his man space, no judgment, supportive, wanted the best for him, even sacrifice herself for him. Wish I am as lucky as Koichi, one day.
I think it was more than a good film - it was an important film. I don't think it's an overstatement to say that this film will inspire a new generation of makers who realize what can be done with good, human storytelling, economic character development, show-don't-tell fundamentals, and efficient use of budget. It raises the bar for moviemaking in the 2020s and beyond and makes most of today's Hollywood fare (including its own Godzilla movies) virtually (if not totally) unwatchable. People will point to this film as a game changer in years to come, and not just in the limited sense of making monster/blockbuster/kaiju movies. It's a reminder of what great directors of the 1970s knew and were so good at.
First time Ive cried at a Godzilla movie. This is way better than a lot of best picture winners. This deserves way more attention than it’s getting. 10/10.
Shin Godzilla and Godzilla -1 is a class of their own. If you said that your home can’t replicate the feeling in cinema then you have not put enough money into your home theater. Usually people try to make things black and white but Godzilla originally is not good nor bad, it more like a force of nature that create by the sin of mankind. In my take at least.
We needed a MONSTER to come and rescue entertainment! And thats what we, the regular moviegoers, who still love great storytelling, are grateful to products like this one, especially in the sorry state of the current blockbuster
Godzilla just shows up for a few minutes, but it does more than any other Godzilla, it is like if Godzilla read the scrip and said " this time I want an Oscar"
@@baconeggcheesepodcast9390 I’m a Old head grew up on Godzilla and I believe this is the Best , Buy itself the story is amazing Hollywood could learn from this
It's the human story and Godzilla just makes the stakes worth that much more. Best movie i've seen in a long time. It deserves all the flowers. There arent movies that I want to repeat watch it right after seeing it...this is one of them.
The score… I am OBSESSED with it! I’m also listening to it a ton and replaying the movie in my mind 😅. I just got home from seeing it for the fourth time 🤤🤤🤤.
Excellent summary. This is why this movie is great. It is a metaphor for the struggles we all face. The contemplation of our own life and our own death. It speaks to every person. It captures the excellence of the golden age of Japanese cinema. The struggles of an individual. Executed slowly and carefully and always with great respect. And finally it reaffirms life and forgiveness. Godzilla is not the main character but an agent of change. It's a film about every person that happens to have Godzilla in it.
Godzilla: Minus One is not like other movies I've seen in recent years. For the first time in ages I saw a movie that makes me immediately want to go back and watch it again. The last two times I felt like this was for "Interstellar" and "Edge of Tomorrow". Both movies have complex plots because time itself is treated as a character. In all of these movies we watch the characters struggling to survive in a desperate attempt to save the world. I believe today is the last day Godzilla: Minus One will be in an IMAX near me. It's strange but I feel like if I don't see it for a 2nd time I'll miss out.
I don’t know about you, but I think this film really nails similar themes of 50s and early 60s Japanese cinema: The theme of finding purpose in a world of suffering. The theme of Should I keep on living or die? I think it fits right in with the likes of Ikiru and Sansho the Bailiff. It feels like the culmination of that time period.
Saw the movie on Thursday, watched all the trailers a few times and several reviews on Friday and this is Saturday morning. I’m looklooking for an IMAX to check it out. Either way, I will see it again soon. Every Scene is meaningful in moving the story forward, and beautifully directed.
Just saw the film today. Can’t believe a Godzilla movie would move me to tears. Literally people next to me were crying in the middle and towards the end of the film. This is a masterpiece on all fronts and should win Best Academy Film.
No, my friend, you are not alone, this film hasn't left me, I saw it four times, three in color and one minus color. The power is in its narrative, the human factor. I bonded immediately with them, even now when I see clips on RUclips from Minus- 1 the emotion is still there, it hasn't wavered. I've never encounted that before, even with some of my favorite films. Yes, I love this movie.
it was released here in the UK on the 15th. I have already seen it twice and can't wait to see it again. it was actually even better the second time around. feel so adrenalised after seeing it. easily in my top 5 favourite Godzilla movies :)
Why did I feel that Godzilla felt like the Seventh Samurai or the West Side Story? Why did I feel like Akiko alone was more soulful than the Oscar-winning Hollywood posers of the last 20 years?
This movie deserves every accolade it gets! IT IS THAT GOOD!! Takashi Yamazaki, you did it! You have given us the Godzilla we've wanted for years! THIS IS Godzilla!!!!
The proof is in the receipts- at one point it looked like it was going to be out of the theaters by early January with one or two showings a day. Then, it caught fire and went back to a full day of showings. Now it's being re-released in black and white! I was finally able to see it in the theater the other day for the first showing. It went from 5 of us to about 20 of us by the time the movie started. This was for a Tuesday noon screening. Like you, I was deeply moved as well. The power of great storytelling. The word of mouth and return viewings is keeping the train rolling. The movie is even being showcased on the LED screen at LA Live. So happy for the continued success. I am so glad that you mentioned the score. It was a great blend of the new cues with the classic original G theme. Your home viewing experience may not have the same effect, but it shouldn't. That's the power of watching a movie in a theater. However, I think your love of the film will remain just like mine will. ~ Caretaker
Thank you for this video. You are not alone. 😂 I've seen the film twice now and have not stopped thinking about it since the day I first saw it. I am obssesed. I think I've convinced at least 5 people to go see it in the theater, including my wife's parents. 😂 i listen to the soundtrack every day. I can admit it. I have a Minus One problem.
G -1.0 resonates with us viewers in the best way. I saw it on IMAX on the last screenings, which I got partly comped by a Nestea promo. It is an allegory of our experience with the Covid pandemic. We live for those who did not, the monster left many dead in its wake, we can fight against it together, and we can rebuild our lives in its aftermath, and come out OK.
SAME SAME SAME AND SAME. I've been listening to the score on repeat and each viewing has me more hooked. I can tell already that this movie is going down as one of my all-time favorites
In my opinion, I don't think Koichi was ever a coward. I think he was intelligent enough to know that his kamikaze attack would have been worthless in the grand scheme of the war, and when he was faced with the choice of making a feeble attempt at attacking the creature on Odo Island, Koichi chose to live on. His hand shakes not from cowardice but because he can't push himself to make the choice to end his life for a meaningless purpose. He made an oath to his country to die fighting for it, but his made oaths not his parents as well to come home alive. That oath took priority, and when he was told to live on for Akiko, and given the choice to live or die, Koichi was able to make a difference and win the fight AND survive to continue on for the people that love him. What a fantastic film.
I took my 2 teenagers to see this a few nights ago, and I'm so impressed by this movie. I find myself thinking about it at random times. I understand how you might feel about this movie. Great videos btw, you're very entertaining.
I love Shin Godzilla and the magic was never gone, even after having watched it for more than 10 times. So while what happened with King Kong can happen with any film, only time can tell if you can enjoy Minus One again as times goes on. And I think its a movie that you will definitely enjoy more if you can start scratching beneath the surface of its final product. Once you get into things like the nuance in its message, or the attention to details put into the films, you just cant help but appreciate it even more even when you realize the flaws in the product.
I literally went and watched King Kong (2005) after watching Godzilla Minus One. Between this movie and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire I was inspired to go and watch that King Kong movie and then I went and watched Gojira (1954) the next day.
Some movies you just know won't be the same at home. After having an incredible experience seeing Annihilation in the theater, I recommended it to a few friends, who (of course) ended up watching it on their laptops and pretty much everyone said "meh, it was OK." I saw it twice in the theater and it really needed the big screen, great audio, and probably the captive nature of being in an audience. I just went to see Godzilla Minus One Minus Color last night and I thought it was even better in that format. Just amazing. I was going to see it again tomorrow, but the only show is in the afternoon and I have to work, unfortunately.
I'm going to see it on Friday (me and my mum have unlimited cards at our local cinema) but it's not got IMAX screenings so have to make do with the general format can't wait to see it anyways at least once ( my mum doesn't want to see it so she's seeing A Nightmare Before Christmas 1/2hr after mine) i's going to be epic, emotional and such etc
Concur. Absolutely a great movie. Phenomenal from every major cinematic angle. Acting was top tier for a "monster movie." And I put "monster movie" in quotes because it doesn't even feel like a true monster movie. It feels like a war drama that happens to have Godzilla in it as the antagonist. Couple this with the great effects, the tension, the plot, and timeless soundtrack...It is Oscar worthy no doubt IMO. Such a great portrayal of what we Godzilla fans have always wanted on the big screen. It's everything we could have hoped for. Finally realized on film. Not Hollywood junk food. Not America's own take on what Godzilla should be. It's the Godzilla we as kids knew to be: An unstoppable force that demands your awe and respect due to its size and power. Minus one will be a blu-ray that goes on my shelf in my study as a staple and talking point. Amongst the greats of film like Forest Gump, Titanic, Top Gun Maverick, Judgment Day etc. That we will visit every so often for a watch. It's THAT good.
11 times for me and tomorrow will be 12. I've seen it in all the formats and even 4DXS which pretty much beat me to death, but it added to the experience. I'm not a Godzilla fanboy by any means, but this is not just a Godzilla movie. It's a masterpiece of cinema unlike all the trash they've had the nerve to call cinema over the last 20 years. I will also keep going to it until it's pulled from theaters and I really really hope they bring the monochrome version to the US. My passport is up to date just in case. LOL
What a great December I didn’t think I would ever get to see a Japanese Godzilla or a new John woo film at my local cinema!!! Thanks for the analysis of Godzilla. My family doesn’t get it either , just like I don’t care for football
Godzilla Minus One's biggest strength is its script and performances. It will hold up MUCH better on small screen than Jackson's King Kong which relied on spectacle.
Now 2nd phase will be which streaming platform will buy the right to the film. Pretty sure Minus One is the top priority for the platform and will introduce to lots of new viewers
Watched it in IMAX last week and this bargain Tuesday I decided to watch it in 4DX. Truly such a fun movie to watch in that format and only the second movie that I've decided to splurge on the experience (Maverick was the other). Although it is leaving the 4DX format I wouldn't rush out to watch this version of it. While extremely fun it actually detracts from the movie itself. While you have the chance go see the movie, if you can find it on an IMAX screen all the better.
True the movie might be really good but can it compare to the original where Serizawa was betrayed to give up his life's work and die to keep it from being used for war.
Thank You!!! I just remember American movies I watched when I was a kid. It was great time. I really really hope Hollywood movie becomes like that, once again I would be very happy if this Gozilla movie trigged it, such revival

The drive home after the theater and constantly thinking about it after made me love the movie even more.
Don't forget. Almost all of this movie was in daylight. Most kaiju movies are mostly at night or dark environments for CGI purposes.
Totally. They weren't afraid of minor CGI immersion issues. They wanted us to see how fearsome Godzilla was in this movie.

I love that you continue to make content about this film. I've seen it twice and going a third time this week.
Ok I’m definitely going to make a video about this one
me too! i cant wait to watch the film.
"Efficient use of budget?" It's called underpaying your talent. No Japanese Screen Actors Guild. Loved the movie, not stingy Toho management.
Thats really a true sign of a good film. The more you think about it, the better it gets.
First time Ive cried at a Godzilla movie. This is way better than a lot of best picture winners. This deserves way more attention than it’s getting. 10/10.
I’ve seen this movie three times already.
Wow ok ok
Shin Godzilla and Godzilla -1 is a class of their own. If you said that your home can’t replicate the feeling in cinema then you have not put enough money into your home theater. Usually people try to make things black and white but Godzilla originally is not good nor bad, it more like a force of nature that create by the sin of mankind. In my take at least.
We needed a MONSTER to come and rescue entertainment! And thats what we, the regular moviegoers, who still love great storytelling, are grateful to products like this one, especially in the sorry state of the current blockbuster
TOHO please release this film in theaters here is SE Asia.
It's such a crime that they still haven't released it there. But hang in there, they have to show it sooner or later.
Godzilla just shows up for a few minutes, but it does more than any other Godzilla, it is like if Godzilla read the scrip and said " this time I want an Oscar"
Lol! So true!
I’m going back for a third time
Awesome!
Wow ok it’s that good
@@baconeggcheesepodcast9390 I’m a Old head grew up on Godzilla and I believe this is the Best , Buy itself the story is amazing Hollywood could learn from this
It's the human story and Godzilla just makes the stakes worth that much more. Best movie i've seen in a long time. It deserves all the flowers. There arent movies that I want to repeat watch it right after seeing it...this is one of them.
I wish the "Otoko wa Tsurai yo" series, in which the man who played the scientist appeared as a child actor, would be well received overseas.
Tora-san is great.👍
The score… I am OBSESSED with it!
You are NOT alone, BushidoBlues.
it was released here in the UK on the 15th.
~ Caretaker
Very well said! And I'm so happy for its success!
It's that good. I've NEVER raved about a movie this much since I saw the original,"Star Wars," back in 1977.
Bro ur not alone.. phenomenal movie… I’m literally obsessed with it too!
I saw it twice and I need to see it again.
I can't stop thinking about this film as well. I'm going to see it again tomorrow. I'm man enough to admit my eyes were a bit watery at the end.
It's incredible. Mind blowing.
I can't stop returning to the theater to watch the movie again and again.
It gets better and better!
Saw it 2nd time yesterday. It was even better. My daughter loved it.
I HAVE SEEN IT FIVE TIMES AND I ALSO CANNOT STOP THINKING ABOUT IT!!!!
Me too, saw it twice!
I took my 2 teenagers to see this a few nights ago, and I'm so impressed by this movie. I find myself thinking about it at random times. I understand how you might feel about this movie.
Great videos btw, you're very entertaining.
I'm mind blown that this movie was made for 15 million dollars and it looks like a 180 million dollar Hollywood movie. It's incredible! I loved it. ❤
I think you have perfectly explained my thought process around this film since I’ve seen it better than any video I’ve seen on RUclips so far.
ME TOO!
Same here! I absolutely loved it! I can’t even remember the last time I had such a great time in a theatre! It is a masterpiece!
This and King Kong 2005 are monster masterclass
Ok I’m going to go see it
I literally went and watched King Kong (2005) after watching Godzilla Minus One. Between this movie and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire I was inspired to go and watch that King Kong movie and then I went and watched Gojira (1954) the next day.
I emphatically agree with your assessment! Absolutely one of my all time favorites!!!
Everything is good about this movie. It has moving story stunning effects realike characters
King Kong is one of my favorite movie, too. I’ll cherish GMO the same way. These are what I call my passion movies.
I agree with your comments about this movie and share your obsession. Probably the best movie I've seen in 2023. Exceeded my expectations.
終戦直後はみんな生き残るのに必死でした
Just got a Godzilla Prediction Network sticker to put on my Subaru
11 times for me and tomorrow will be 12. I've seen it in all the formats and even 4DXS which pretty much beat me to death, but it added to the experience. I'm not a Godzilla fanboy by any means, but this is not just a Godzilla movie. It's a masterpiece of cinema unlike all the trash they've had the nerve to call cinema over the last 20 years. I will also keep going to it until it's pulled from theaters and I really really hope they bring the monochrome version to the US. My passport is up to date just in case. LOL
come to japan lets see it together in monochrome Jan 12 is the date
@@sujan966 that would be awesome! Thanks for the offer!
I’m glad you enjoyed this movie.
Thanks Chris! Did you like it too?
@@bushidoblues9302 I didn’t watched the recent Godzilla movie so… basically I have no comment on this topic.
What a great December I didn’t think I would ever get to see a Japanese Godzilla or a new John woo film at my local cinema!!! Thanks for the analysis of Godzilla. My family doesn’t get it either , just like I don’t care for football
It shouldn't win an Oscar. It should put and END to Oscar.
Wow ok
Went multiple times, and was repeatedly blown-away by the emotional weight of absolutely everything in the picture.
#live
Feeling the same way
Hollywood is so corrupt and woke that i wouldn't be surprised if they totally ignore this film at the Academy Awards.
Godzilla Minus One's biggest strength is its script and performances. It will hold up MUCH better on small screen than Jackson's King Kong which relied on spectacle.
Yes! I believe that's exactly it! King Kong was mostly spectacle, where godzilla has a lot more going for it.
I've said the SAME thing to my GF. I might need to go again...
I've listened to the soundtrack every day, too. I love it.
True the movie might be really good but can it compare to the original
where Serizawa was betrayed to give up his life's work and die to keep it from being used for war.
Thank You!!!
I just remember American movies I watched when I was a kid. It was great time. I really really hope Hollywood movie becomes like that, once again
I would be very happy if this Gozilla movie trigged it, such revival
you are not alone bro , i am also obsessed about it
Same here
