I think it's the Best movie of 2023 period. Because since there was a awefuel strike this year in Hollywood. It was a terrible year for Movies. But this Godzilla movie outside of the U.S really help fans to an AWESOME movie.
If you think Minus One's CGI is better, you are high asf. The cost to make it is a clear indication of quality. Toho did a better job by putting gay men in rubber suits.
@@MrE1981 thanks for taking time out of your day to reply, it means a lot that you cared enough about my comment on a RUclips video to insert your opinion into it! Don’t really know why you would, but thanks for caring about which movies are perfect to me! I hope your day gets better so you’re in the mood to do something more productive.
I'm from Poland, and our cinemas did not plan to air Godzilla MInus One, but after stunningly good reviews it got one cinema network decided to air it after all, for one week. At this point Godzilla's airing was prolonged for the fourth week and people still coming to see it. I had difficulty getting tickets the first time.
That's so amazing! I just saw it the 2nd time here in the States, but this time the "Minus Color" version, and I'm hoping to see that version another time later! This movie was so fucking amazing. I thought "Barbenheimer" was going to be the "peak" of 2023, but HOLY FUCK did Toho come in HOT and blow everything else out of the water just before the year ended! But now they started their 2024 strong, and I'm hoping the next Godzilla vs Kong will still enjoyable enough (since I don't see it being anywhere near as great as Minus One was).
here in malaysia (not to mention other countries within asia & southeast asia as well), our cinemas have been contacting Toho for months back in 2023 to get copyright for movie screening, but to no avail, guess they dont want too much revenue xD
I'm not shy to admit I teared up several times during the movie. It's so beautifully written and acted. I actually feared for their lives every time Godzilla showed up.
@@Randy_Flamethrower How is having a human emotional reaction "a little much"? Nearly everyone in my theater cried and applauded, several times. The characters were acted out beautifully and you feel sympathy for them.
Godzilla legit has to be the most versatile character in fiction. From being a movie with a serious tone to something more action packed. Overall just super happy to see soo many people get into the franchise
I’ve seen this movie 7 times in theaters so far. Yes, 7. I know, I’m a lunatic. This movie is PHENOMENAL. I can’t praise it enough. I hope Hollywood learns a lesson, but they probably won’t Edit: just for context, I have the AMC A-List pass so I’m not paying for each viewing
It's still wild to me Minus One had a budget of $15,000,000 or less! Hollywood literally has no excuse for the 200+ million dollar dross they put out as far as I'm concerned!
I've seen it 3 times and I WISH I could see it 10 more times! And with the special black and white version coming soon, I will definitely watch that multiple times,
My favorite part in the movie was the line that the technician said to the main koichi which was to live, if you watch the movie we saw how koichi was ashamed to be alive and couldn't bear the shame or guilt of not fulfilling his job as a suicide pilot, that he chose to live without happiness not commenting fully to his role as his new adopted daughter not accepting her calling him dad, and not marring his girl who he loved and knew loved him, all because he believed he wasn't worthy of happiness and to be alive so when the only surviving member of the first godzilla attack say live to koichi was just power, which was telling koichi its ok that you are a live and you can find happiness and live, just beautiful.
I am a theater manager and went to a different premium XD to see G-1 and was so blown away that I wept for everyone in the film including G. I have been dipping into my theater's G -1 movie as much as I can every day at work since 11/30's Fan Screening event. I cannot get enough of this movie.
This movie really showcases how important, yet underrated sound design can be. Unsurprisingly, Hollywood movies have dropped the ball with impressive sound design as of late.
My theatre was filled with bros and you know when the scene goes silent as the plane is flying towards Godzilla’s mouth? Every man was whimpering. A perfect film.
The boat scene was a crazy tension builder in IMAX and it's a shame you didn't get to see it in it. What makes the scene so impactful is that in the absence of music, the scene is 'scored' by the sound of the siren going, and the water crashing on both Godzilla and the boat. A controlled lack of music, deciding when silence fits a scene better than with music, is still something that western media struggles with in my opinion.
it is music, technically (track 3 - Confusion on the official score - check it out, it's all really good and re-listenable 😄). very ambient-style compositions in many places
It hasn't made half the profit of GvK yet, so don't cream your panties. It's just hip to hate Hollywood right now. GxK's opening weekend will have y'all eating crow soon enough.
The Monsterverse is awesome... People all of a sudden acting like the Monsterverse is bad simply because they saw a new Japanese Godzilla film is hilarious and dumb as hell😂🤦🏻
I actually identified immensely with the mc, so much so i cried 3 or 4 times because alot of the things he was going through were the same things I went through when I got out of the army, and it really just shook my core because i hadnt rehashed though thoughts in almost a decade
That most Westerns can’t relate to Koichi is really prevalent, and it shows whenever they call his episodes as “melodramatic” or “overacted.” It really shows how rare it can be to find someone who understands what it’s like to have PTSD. US veterans and some prior servicemen can probably really relate.
Yep my dad fought in Vietnam and had horrible ptsd that he suffered from for decades. I thought they did Koichis ptsd very well. Especially his inability to let go of the past and the part where he wakes up from the nightmare and asks if he really did die in the war and this was all his dying dream, oh my god, that shit hit home. Also, don’t want to get too spoilery, but what is said to him in the final scene gave me chills.
Agreed. My uncle survived Vietnam and had that part of his life hidden away in trauma. When I tried to discuss G-1 with others at work who'd also seen the movie they commented on the same of Koichi's "dramatics" and called Koichi a "coward". I was offended and felt the need to compare my uncle's PTSD to explain Koichi. That shut them up. Some people are just so boastful and dumb.
@@ruufusdeleon1264 I wouldn’t say boastful or dumb; rather that there are any number of things each of us is wholly ignorant of, and without being informed or corrected, we will inevitably give bad takes on that of which we are ignorant. I feel you. I do roll my eyes myself whenever someone says it’s over dramatic. But I encourage you to be patient, so that more people can in fact learn about this part of the human condition. God bless you, your family and your ancestors.
PTSD is obviously very real, and very serious, but his character was also very overacted. But that's also par for the course for Japanese acting. 🤷🏼♂️
@@Crow_T_Robot How many people have you met who are veterans with PTSD? There is a difference between civilians who experience it and soldiers who experience it. Many soldiers with PTSD behave exactly the same way Koichi does.
In all honesty, I cried during this movie. I felt sympathy and sorrow for the characters, not to mention crying after the movie about the deaths of the original suit actors.
I went to watch it the other night and it's genuinely the first film I've seen for years which had me walking out of the cinema feeling actual human emotions and still talking about it days later. Favourite movie of the year but a loooong way.
In 2022, the cat bested the mouse (Puss in Boots 2 the last wish) In 2023, the plumber and the ghost children bested the mouse (Super Mario Bros and Five Nights at Freddy's) And now, in 2024, the atomic monster bested the mouse (Godzilla minus one) It's kinda cool seeing big corporations fail miserably
@@seekgaming303the way you said it is like saying dreamworks, nintendo and gojira ain’t a big figure themselves (had to admit fnaf is quite small compare to these giants)
I am so excited for that. I’ll probably go see it again before that is released but I have a feeling that, if I live another five or ten years, I’ll end up seeing this film ten or fifteen times. Or maybe more. A film this well made gives a viewer more gifts than can be absorbed in a couple of viewings. My favorite movies, I’ll rewatch them just to focus on what the camera is doing, for example. This film is that good that close viewings will only give us more.
I was more gripped with the main characters inner turmoil due to war trauma than godzilla himself. and the fact he ran from the battlefield. The survivors guilt and the way they portrayed his suffering! My God just a fantastic job from the the entire production company. Please go watch this film! Show Hollywood we want good stories!
I’ll never forget my first time seeing the atomic breath aftermath scene. It was just breath taking seeing the cloud and watching Godzilla roar at his destruction. Seeing Koichi lose one of the few things he ever had causing him to scream was imprinted on my memories.
@@Ryzard I was the latter, especially once the black rain hit. That clicked with me because I know the story that Ogami Itto tells about Black Rain in the movie named that.
I hate Godzilla movies. I'm going to see this movie again today after seeing it yesterday not knowing anything about it. This was the best movie of the year, by far.
It seems like nowadays conservatives are the butt of the joke or gets thrown underneath the bus whenever people dislike something. It’s getting tiresome and annoying at this point if you ask me.
Shes just butthurt it made more than the woke crap she shills for and features a genuine and loving conventional family unit that help each other over come their flaws
Can’t say enough about this movie. It brought me back to the theaters from a 5 year hiatus. Life long Godzilla fan but damn a great storyline and development overall. Everyone I dragged with me were astounded at how much they felt invested even though they didn’t know the language being spoken. 10/10
Dude, are you my doppelganger? I'm also a life long Godzilla fan, and the last time I was in the theater was almost 5 years as well! Funny enough, the last movie I've watched in cinema was another Godzilla movie, that Monsterverse movie from 2019. Minus One is m favorite movie of the year, and probably the best Godzilla filmI've ever seen. 10/10
When I went to go see the FNAF movie in theaters, the trailer for this got me HOOKED. At first I was like, “Oh, another Godzilla movie” but then I saw that it was a Japanese production and not American. My hopes are sky-high and I hope this gets Oscar nominated.
Easily the best film of 2023 if not in years and my absolute favorite film in a LONG time. I saw it twice in theaters and am DYING for the blu ray release.
Been a while since I’ve seen such harrowing, jaw dropping action. His frickin laser beam struck the fear of god in me. Add the great characters on top of that. And then add the great look into post-war Japan on top of THAT? Movie resonates a surprising amount.
The female lead… does a heroic selfless act… that has impact… a female hero in a Godzilla movie That act changes the male lead… it’s an emotional scene
Female characters have often served as integral movers in the Godzilla franchise, from Emiko revealing the existence of the oxygen destroyer despite having sworn to secrecy to Akane willing to sacrifice herself as recompense for having caused the deaths of fellow comrades. With that said, I absolutely LOVED this film and it left me breathless at times. This iteration of Godzilla had me terrified.
@scratchbuilder5952 That's interesting. While Godzilla had blasted his "heat wave" and the Shockwave was taking effect, my thought went straight to Koichi and he was just watching and not pulling Noriko into the alleyway! That bothered me and I know if I were him, my instincts would have taken over.
I dragged my wife to this. I've made her watch the over-the-top Legendary films, and I don't think she understood why I was SO excited for this one. I think she loves this movie more than I do. And I LOVE this movie. Edit: I still consider 2014 Godzilla a good film. I really enjoy it. The others, to me, are just popcorn flicks.
Godzilla Minus One is fantastic. It feels like a community of people (Godzilla fans) knew a secret a general audience is just discovering. That Godzilla is an amazing character, an icon. I think you're missing on one point. Godzilla is 70 years strong. Most fans in the US became fans from watching the all-out kaiju fights on our television screens. They were kid friendly, which turned many of us kids into fans. We're seeing this play out again. Legendary's Monsterverse is taking that same path to draw in a new generation of fans. Sure, it's not the dark and serious tone we would like. If we care about the King of the Monsters and the enjoyment we got from the Showa era, then let us support the Monsterverse. It's a modern-day Showa Era. It's a great time to be a Godzilla fan.
Lmao what?? Thats the whole point of it????😂😂😂 we didn't go to the movies to see a giant lizard coming to land, have an Existential crisis, pork an overweight bl@ck lesbian and go back onto the ocean 😂😂😂😂
Just got back from seeing the movie and oh man... I'm a very happy chappy! I'm not a hardcore Godzilla fan by any means, before this movie I'd only seen the 1998 Godzilla and the 2014 Godzilla but I heard a lot of good things about this movie and I'm so glad I saw it! It absolutely lived up to the hype! It's also my first time actually seeing Godzilla on the big screen in a cinema which is kinda strange but hey, better late than never! For me though this movie was excellent, it gets the balance right with just enough Godzilla destruction, a simple yet interesting/engaging plot and actually giving you a cast of characters that are like-able, you care about and want to see live! It actually gets a bit heavy and emotional in a couple of scenes which surprised me a bit too. Again without getting too into spoilers, there's that one scene where Shikishima just breaks down in front of his not-wife and it got to me a bit! It really made me empathise with him and made me want to root for the lad even more to get the redemption he was looking for! Another thing that I love about this movie is that it's only two hours long! It's nice to finally go and see a movie that isn't a bloated two and a half to three hour long slugfest where my arse falls asleep and/or I feel like I'm going to piss myself by the time the credits roll! 😂😂😂 Anyway I'll stop because this comment is long enough. If you haven't already... GO AND SEE THIS MOVIE!
I loved this movie but feel kind of bad because me and my friends all roared with laughter at the end when the protagonist flies his plane right into godzilla's mouth and it just kind of stuck there for a second before exploding. 😆
@@paulandersbullecer3152really I legitimately thought he was dead and with no knowledge on WW2 aircraft I assumed that the plane didn’t have a ejection seat but I was glad he was alive (also I didn’t find it funny I found it tense)
With Godzilla 2014, everyone in the theatre got hyped when even Godzilla's FOOT showed up on screen. When he used his laser, people were cheering. It was a game of waiting for Goji to show his beautiful scaled face and stomp on tanks. During minus one, it got DEAD SILENT when you heard Godzilla - because everyone was tense, hoping the characters could make it out, and terrified that he had showed up. When he used his laser, it wasn't cheering, as much as a mix of "holy shit" and "god DAMN" as the audience realized how one-sided the conflict was. It was one of the first times in a monster movie that I actively hoped that the monster WOULDN'T show up. I wanted the family to be happy! I wanted the kid to have parents, I wanted everyone to come home safe. I didn't want to see a heroic sacrifice - the bait and switch being well done, though I realized it in advance during the "upgrade" scene - so seeing the parachute was a genuine relief from tension rather than a generic feel good moment.
I had zero interest in this movie until the reviews between both critics and audiences exploded recently. I just got back from the theater and I have to say, this movie truly lived up to and exceeded the hype. I had no idea a Japanese low budget Godzilla movie could make me cry, make me scared, and feel as epic and high stakes as it did. Godzilla 2014 was good, but Minus One is actually what that movie tried to be. This is the greatest Godzilla movie ever made, and I fully expect it to win at the Oscars.
Just saw this in IMAX, it's freaking unreal!! What a movie!! A+ all the way. 100% agree with all the praise this move has received, it's a cinematic masterpiece! The way those characters are written, how invested everyone - and I mean everyone - in a packed IMAX theatre were in those characters is a testament to how good this movie is. You could hear a pin drop in the quiet moments... And then there was the roar of Godzilla. OMG, the sound is next level!! Absolutely loved this movie. 10/10! Also, take a tissue with you, trust me, there's a couple of parts where this movie really pulls at the heart strings...🥺
I saw it over two weeks ago and I can’t stop raving about it! So much so I am about to see it yet again tonight! EASILY the best movie of the year, and my favorite theater experience in years. I have an inherent love for all the Godzilla films, even if some are much better than others, and this one cruised in and stole the top spot. Hollywood can’t hold a candle to this.
I'm glad you acknowledged that it's mainly Lazy, Hollywood character writing that were the main problems with the "Monsterverse" films rather than bashing the entirety of the MonVerse films outright like some other critics do. They do have their own charms to them but they're not perfect, I treat those films more like an entry way for new fans to Godzilla. After watching the whole video, you're definitely a fan of the series, I'm definitely subbing to you.
I'm honored that this was the first (actual Japanese) Godzilla I got to see in theater. Right from the get-go he's genuinely terrifying... and that's BEFORE he gets irradiated! They show him _just_ enough; plenty of satisfactory screentime, but with gripping build-up. He's not shown bombastically as to not make the CG look unconvincing. But the character builds, the arcs, the very heavy hero's journey... the music... *everything.* This is what fine cinema was before Hollywood devolved its content to 5-second attention-span consumption. There's little that grabs you in today's movies. And that's only to say about all the films that aren't identity/idealism flag-wavers, no; the movies that are meant to be the crowd-pleasers. Toho completely took the core concept of cinema to heart with this one. I doubt I'll see another movie so captivating in a loooong time.
I couldn’t help wanting to go watch it again so I seen it twice. And when walking out the 2nd time I heard ppl saying “I didn’t think this movie was going to go that hard” , felt really nice hearing it , bringing in new a audience to the franchise. Keep supporting it and show what a good movie deserves.
The characters were great The captain had a heart of gold, The young sailor that wants to prove himself. The scientist that used logic and cared about not wanting people to die and made a point of how cheap it was during the war. Many good lines in the movie. Especially when the scientist and captain who fought in the war told the young sailor he should be proud not have fought in the war really struck me where in talking about it today.
4:37 “NEW TOY…NEVER MIND!” I also like the attention to historical accuracy when it comes to the Japanese warships. I don’t think I could even point out a single inaccuracy when it comes to the warships. This studio deserves to make more Godzilla movies.
The fact that the movie had insane historical references, was a masterpiece of human suffering in a post war country, and still operated in budget... magnificent.
This was the first monster movie to give me goosebumps. As a new father, the story between a man not ready to be a father; fighting his own war and a daughter who needs a father really touched my soul.
I absolutely loved the silence before the ‘event’, it perfectly represents that slo-mo when you know something awful is about to happen but it’s too late to do anything about it.
It's honestly a very underutilized trope for movies, where you have a villain that is just a villain based on their inherent dangerous nature and not necessarily any villainous intentions. Other examples being Alien, Terminator, Jaws, Jurassic Park. There's something appealing about the idea of being in danger from some incredible unstoppable force of nature, rather than the pedantic bullshit we face in real life like car accidents or climate change.
I have to say it, this Atomic Breath is the most satisfying thing to watch. Its like watching an old revolver fire in slow motion. Whoever came up with that idea on the team is a genius.
This film was fantastic, amazing to see what true professionals can create with a sixth of modern hollywood's summer blockkbuster movie budget, i am happily going back to the theater multiple times to support it
The taxi driver is iconic and shows what could be without CG. I really miss those types of movies that actually get you lost in the film. when the credits roll there's slight disappointment being back to reality. Thanks for the update brother keep hearing good things about this one
I just wanna say that this might be my favorite Godzilla design of all time! It's got that badass design of heisei godzilla, just in a more realistic form! In my opinion, it's PERFECT!
Have never seen nor wanted to see a Godzilla movie in my life ... until today!!! It only just came out here and I went to the biggest best Dolby cinema I could... Wooowwww, I just loved it!! I cried!!! I wanna go again tomorrow!!! Is Shin Godzilla the next one I should seek out??
Saw this movie just this past week. I plan to see it one more time hopefully before the new year. It might have been a small audience, but damn it. The movie, the characters both Godzilla and the humans, made me invested into them. The first Godzilla movie that I was rooting for the people to beat Godzilla and for Kochi and his adopted daughter to live happy lives. Once those end credits were rolling, me and my tourist friends lead the charge with a sounding applause that had all the other audience members clapping too. We were teary eyed and one of the audience members, a veteran air force fighter, said to us that this movie truly hit him in the emotional levels. Man was in his 60s or more, but I could tell his eyes were teary but there was a confident smile on his face. It was also what he asked us as we were chatting with him. If we understood both the messages conveyed by this movie and the various easter eggs hidden. Personally I only saw a couple of references, such as Godzilla biting and chewing the train; but I definitely felt the message conveyed through that movie and just kept cheering for the people, the little people, fighting against Godzilla, the absolute force of malevolent nature that he became. Thank for this video review!
I saw it 5 times so far. I could not stop ruminating the film and characters, and needed to keep going back. It's a start contrast to even the shit Hollywood films shown in previews before this masterpiece.
I was so blown away by this movie. I went in thinking it was going to be another Hollywood disaster. But I was blown away. Easily the best of 2023, and the best I've seen in theaters for years.
Just saw it today. It was amazing. My god that moment when that little girl gave him the art she made broke me. Like she knew there was something wrong. It was a good scene. How is tears coming out in a monster movie. Is nod to the story they told. Great movie
took my gf to the movie (she has no real interest in monster/kaiju movies) and i witnessed her leaning forward several tmes during the movie. she was invested. a really good strenght of this movie: it also wins over people that are usually nop fans of the Gman. my favorite thing about minus one is that we dont get some techno mumbojumbo and/or some sci fi weapon to deal with Goji. no we get a broken country with no standing army and a small group of civilians who must come up with a plan to defeat Goji.
I honestly got serious 'Letter From Iwo Jima' vibes from this film, and 'Grave of the Fireflies' about the girl. Movie had me bawling. I like how you mentioned how the original story embodied Japan's uncertainty of the future. It is a concept no other Godzilla film has really bothered to address, and I think this film is the true successor to the original. This took place just after the American occupation ended and the original story was about something entirely different, a Japanese Soldier. It got scrapped and this story was born in the ruins. Just some fun facts.
One thing that I find interesting, is that Shikishima carries a letter from his mom, which said something like " stay alive" , I always figured that that clashed with him being a Kamikaze pilot.
this film should have won Best Picture its so much better than anything we have seen in years. Honest raw story telling and fantastic acting, visuals, people and even a great Godzilla. still can't believe I cried both times I watched it
I liked it. I understood the survivor's guilt felt by the main guy. I enjoyed the ominous Godzilla score. I liked how it gave you time to read the subtitles. I was bummed that Godzilla did not reach Tokyo.. I didn't get to sing.. Oh no, there goes Tokyo! Go go Godzilla. Kong the OG kaiju RULES!
Honourable mention for the Capitan character. Ever scene he's in is fun and he oozes pride and confidence. One of my favourite characters in the movie aside from the main cast
The Godzilla scenes, especially the scene where Godzilla is bearing down on the wooden boat are pure artistry. Not sure if people will appreciate the immense talent of the director and designers that created these unforgetable moments.
I've seen some of the American Godzilla films and this is hands down one of the best, and agreed best movie I've seen this year! It's better than Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Pt. 1 and I'm a fan of that franchise (TBH it was a letdown from Fallout, but still some good action). The human story is what got me, and this can be directly compared to Jaws, another favorite. I say this about Jaws all the time, "It's not about the shark, it's about the 3 guys on the boat." And this is what Godzilla Minus One is. The characters are so strong and their motivations are clear, how can you not feel for them? This movie has something that's also been severely lacking in Hollywood in recent years: good male characters with arcs, showcasing not toxic masculinity, but honor and responsibility, and the emotional burden in having to "step up" because society and your own self-worth demands it.
I find this comparison with American Godzilla funny, because it seems like people are filling these films as if Hollywood had abandoned everything that Godzilla was before, whereas Toho has already done this, like, being a hero, anti-hero, villain, victim, Godzilla has been all of this in Japanese films, from the Showa era, Hensei, Millenium, recent short films, and the fact that Toho is enjoying it and even has total respect for the Monsterverse only makes this situation even funnier, because both are lagendary ( Americans) and Toho (Japanese), are doing the same thing currently, reliving the past with current technology, the only difference is, that the Americans are reliving the showa hensei Millenium era etc., while the Japanese are reviving the solo films, serious and heavy that if you compare it to the entire franchise is made up of 5 films or more, I know that the script and the humans (some at least) are very weak, but that doesn't make the film rubbish (at least for me ), especially GvK in which the proposal, the focus of that film was the obvious one in the title, and they delivered, what will come in this next film may not have a serious tone like the one in 2014 or the minus one, but perhaps for the The story of monsters, from Kong's perspective, can be quite heavy, I mean, have you seen the origin of this Kong? It's sad man, so let's not go all out and say that the next film is going to be silly just because Godzilla is doing the same thing he did 40 films ago, running. (detail, I'm not saying that minus one is bad, quite the opposite, it's Oscar worthy, but you know, it seems to have gone to people's heads a lot)
Understood, but please know that I watched it in German, meaning I didn't understand the words. But this movie is such a masterpiece, I understood everything I needed to, and loved it. Then I saw it with the subtitles later and it was even better.
I've seen G-1 twice and actually enjoyed it more because I was focusing on the human drama of the story rather than watching for the next Godzilla appearance. Fantastic film, and I hope to see it again in the theater.
I never expected to be weeping like a small boy at a Godzilla movie 😭. Having said thay, I couldn't help laugh my arse off at those noises he was making right at the end. 😂. Both of them were superb, in fact everyone was.
Dont forget about Godzilla Shin, also very good made by Japaneses with very realistic approach to Godzilla attack, from government and policital point of view

I think of Legendary as the American Showa era; just dumb fun meant to entertain (and I definitely entertained by them). That being said, G-1 is phenomenal and raised my expectations for movies now.
GODZILLA MINUS ONE was the first Toho movie I got to see in the cinema. On my ranking list, GOJIRA 1954 & SHIN GODZILLA were tied at the number 1 spot as best movie in the franchise. Then I saw this, and, it knocked them down into the number 2 spot. A close number 2, but 2nd none the less. The two things I loved about this the most was, how much of a savage Godzilla was in this film, and, the human characters. Never have I seen human characters in the film series so well acted, and well written as they are in this one. The only other time the human characters in the series were this well written and performed, was in the 1954 original. Now, on my rankings, I am only ranking Toho, as, I rank the Monster Verse separately. I was already chomping at the bit to get the Blu-Ray when I was halfway through the end credits.
I’m glad to hear you speak with accurate knowledge about the franchise (I didn’t know you were also a lifelong fan till now). But not only do I appreciate your thoughtful review of the movie and the series as a whole, I really liked how you highlighted what j think is Godzilla’s greatest superpower: his plasticity. He can become whatever you need him to become in order to meet the needs and/or demands of the times. Whether a nuclear allegory, a political satire, an environmental message, a thoughtful reflection on the human condition or modern cultural concerns, an anti-hero, action hero, or superhero, a friend of all children, a or just mindless popcorn schlock, Godzilla can and does do it all. With nearly 40 movies over 70 years, I always say: “there’s a Godzilla movie for everyone-even for those who hate Godzilla movies.”
Saw it last night … haven’t been to the cinema since 2018, as nothing has compelled me to go. Great movie .. totally deserves to be number one for years to come.
I saw this film the other day, I was genuinely surprised about how good the characters were and how much I was invested in them, Godzilla was a real force of nature but impersonal, the actors really crushed it and made me care about them
Toho has announced a black & white version of this movie launching on Jan. 12, 2024 in Japan. Hopefully the black & white version may be screened in other markets as well.
This movie is amazing in Imax. I've never said this before, but when i walked out of the theater, i said, " destroy my ears with that beautiful sound again." It seriously is the best movie i ever watched.
Seen it 3X and hope to get one more in theaters. I've told everyone ad-nausea to go see it. It's my favorite of 2023. MI-Dead Reckoning as well as Sound of Freedom are my second place movies.
I saw this today (and had not seen the reviews before). I was drawn in by the acting of the guilt ridden kamikaze who could not bring himself to die pointlessly in WWII, but who immediately took in a stranded young woman caring for the orphaned infant of another stranger. The resolve to protect that child was an effective plot point. The acting and human character development were very memorable. When this wins the Oscar for Best Picture, hopefully it will get widespread box office revenues.
The world is celebrating Godzilla Minus One, just not enough to go out and see it. It’s depressing see the total global Box Office is just over 60 million.

If you think Minus One's CGI is better, you are high asf. The cost to make it is a clear indication of quality. Toho did a better job by putting gay men in rubber suits.

That's impressive.

I’ve seen this movie 7 times in theaters so far. Yes, 7. I know, I’m a lunatic. This movie is PHENOMENAL. I can’t praise it enough. I hope Hollywood learns a lesson, but they probably won’t
Edit: just for context, I have the AMC A-List pass so I’m not paying for each viewing
It's still wild to me Minus One had a budget of $15,000,000 or less! Hollywood literally has no excuse for the 200+ million dollar dross they put out as far as I'm concerned!

The lesson they’ll learn is “more big monster movies”

Yeah I loved that scene as a Jaws tribute.

PTSD is obviously very real, and very serious, but his character was also very overacted. But that's also par for the course for Japanese acting. 🤷🏼♂️

You're so right about not needing superficially "relatable" characters. Koichi Shikishima's story isn't very relatable, but it's so compelling.
Been a while since I’ve seen such harrowing, jaw dropping action. His frickin laser beam struck the fear of god in me. Add the great characters on top of that. And then add the great look into post-war Japan on top of THAT? Movie resonates a surprising amount.
this movie moved me to tears, not only because of characters and emotion but it's been so long since I've seen a good movie released.
The female lead… does a heroic selfless act… that has impact… a female hero in a Godzilla movie
That act changes the male lead… it’s an emotional scene
Female characters have often served as integral movers in the Godzilla franchise, from Emiko revealing the existence of the oxygen destroyer despite having sworn to secrecy to Akane willing to sacrifice herself as recompense for having caused the deaths of fellow comrades. With that said, I absolutely LOVED this film and it left me breathless at times. This iteration of Godzilla had me terrified.

Anyway I'll stop because this comment is long enough. If you haven't already... GO AND SEE THIS MOVIE!
I loved this movie but feel kind of bad because me and my friends all roared with laughter at the end when the protagonist flies his plane right into godzilla's mouth and it just kind of stuck there for a second before exploding. 😆
I mean, that is kind of funny.
Took my 21 and 11 year old sons to see it, and even the younger one said reading subtitles was no barrier to enjoying such a great film.
I watched it with my Dad and brothers, and we loved it. Plus, my dad isn't a big fan of Japanese movies, but this one made him smile
Ive always thought Godzilla was out dated and not entertaining, but this movie changed my mind. Easily one of the best movies I’ve seen in awhile.
*everything.*
This is what fine cinema was before Hollywood devolved its content to 5-second attention-span consumption.
The characters were great
The captain had a heart of gold,
The young sailor that wants to prove himself.
The scientist that used logic and cared about not wanting people to die and made a point of how cheap it was during the war.
Many good lines in the movie. Especially when the scientist and captain who fought in the war told the young sailor he should be proud not have fought in the war really struck me where in talking about it today.
Everybody was awesome!!!!
I hated Godzill in this movie, I want the people to win badly. This movie is Gold

I also like the attention to historical accuracy when it comes to the Japanese warships. I don’t think I could even point out a single inaccuracy when it comes to the warships. This studio deserves to make more Godzilla movies.
I think a few of them may have been destroyed at that point

Write, the writing, the presentation has been elevated but the execution... Amateur hour on most of these films.
Not a big Godzilla fan. But this was by far and away movie of year .. oscars and Hollywood take notice
this film should have won Best Picture its so much better than anything we have seen in years.
He did make it to Tokyo; Ginza is one of its districts.
He did attack Tokyo.
Honourable mention for the Capitan character. Ever scene he's in is fun and he oozes pride and confidence. One of my favourite characters in the movie aside from the main cast
Hollywood is about content, not quality. On the other hand, Japan means quality.
so you don't watch a lot of stuff, huh?
@@lilmovieperp3599 yes. I am very picky about what want to watch.
Most old japanese godzilla movies (all monsters attack, raids again, son of godzilla, etc)
This movie had me genuinely sad when Godzilla showed up because I was so scared any of the main characters were gonna die
I really hope they release a good dub for this. I wanna watch it so badly but my dyslexia makes it very impossible to read and keep up with the text.
Understood, but please know that I watched it in German, meaning I didn't understand the words. But this movie is such a masterpiece, I understood everything I needed to, and loved it. Then I saw it with the subtitles later and it was even better.
I personally respect both Minus 1 and the Legendary G films! I like how the past 2 legendary films channel the absurdity of the Showa Era.
I've seen G-1 twice and actually enjoyed it more because I was focusing on the human drama of the story rather than watching for the next Godzilla appearance. Fantastic film, and I hope to see it again in the theater.
I love the end credits roar and the steps before the roar. Amazing!!!!
Shin is a very good Godzilla yeah. I think this one was actually more menacing though because he looks smart. Shin looked mindless.
Meh shin is alright. Terrible cg but decent concept.
@@priznutit looks just as good as minus one i dont get the problem with the CGI, also they only had a 5 - 8 million dollar budget
@@S1N1CAL Shin looks kind of mindless, but the song accompaning his atomic breath definitely signified he was in massive pain and was definitely aware of it. I do see where your coming from

Million percent agree -- this is my favorite movie of the year, and I don't even don't generally LIKE monster movies.
Yes for sure
Great review and commentary! My hope is that word of mouth will push this film to $200 million. It won't be ignored then.
Crazy when people who give a damn about story over agenda can make a compelling watchable movie. Chew on that Hollywood.
Say it louder so the hollywood idiots can hear it over their egos!
but we need a strong, young female character (millie bobby brown) fist fighting Godzilla and Kong
@@shosc16this godzilla movie has strong women lead characters, though
you don't know what you're talking about and I want to exploit it on a stream...you down to come on so I lolcow this take?
this movie is a commentary on the japanese government just like shin godzilla, if you want to cry about movies being political
Brilliant video dude . I am now subscribed. Just watched it last night here in ireland . I’m not a Godzilla fan but this film blew me away.
I saw this film the other day, I was genuinely surprised about how good the characters were and how much I was invested in them, Godzilla was a real force of nature but impersonal, the actors really crushed it and made me care about them
Toho is so iconic, they put out some of the best black and white samurai movies ever, im not surprised they did well with this
Toho has announced a black & white version of this movie launching on Jan.
I was pulled into Minus 1's STORY in JUST the trailer...and got a physical nerve chill from ears to toes when I heard G's stupendous classical roar!
Hey can’t wait to see it, I remember the OG one via videotape…love your content bro
It’s depressing see the total global Box Office is just over 60 million.
the fast godzilla in godzilla vs kong was just strange to me.
