- Here is a quick look at my Remington 31L I find it an interesting firearm because its the Remington that looks, at least to me, like a Mossberg 500. A cool shotgun that had touches of design from John Browning aka the barrel takedown... It was an important link in the genealogy of the modern pump shotgun.
It was interesting what Remington had here, the Model 17 and guns off that design were from John Browning and when the patent expired on it, Ithaca bought the patent, retooled it and in 1937, Ithaca brought it out as the Model 37. Then, the Model 31 Remington came out, and it is considered by those who have actually handled then one of the finest shotguns made. Remington stopped making the Model 31, not because it was a bad gun, but because it was too expensive to make and they were losing overall to the Winchester Model 12. So they stopped making the Model 31 in 1949 and brought out the 870. Afterwards, the Model 31's patent was bought by Mossberg and guess what, they refined it, actually they simplified it and did a few things different, and out it came as the Model 500.
You got it. Your model 31 lives on as a Mossbery 500, 590
@@Yukon12gauge00buck And JC Higgins model 20.. same thing as the High Standard model 200
@@guaporeturns9472 Thanks for the comment. I have a high standard and they definately have a common ancestry
I inherited a model 31 in 16 ga from my grandpa. It's my favorite pheasant gun, lighter and slicker than my 870 wing master from the mid 80's.
I recently learned that Mossberg sort of copied the action, now I understand why Mossberg shotguns became so popular. Great smooth action pump gun.
Yeah they made a great action commercially viable. Thanks for sharing and enjoy you 31
Excellent history video! I enjoyed the effort you put into this video! thanks for sharing with us.
***** Glad you liked it! Thanks for the note.
Nice! I think someone likes his pump-guns! An interesting note that the later Remington 870 & 1100 were the first shotguns to be manufactured on CNC machinery. I think we need to take that gun over to the trap field where the choke will come in handy.
That's a great plan using it for trap. That's a notable fact about the 870 and 1100.
Kinda cool I have a 1946model 31 and a 1951 870. End of one era and the beginning of another.. all within 5 yrs. Love em both
That is pretty cool. The 31 is pretty smooth I bet!
@@Yukon12gauge00buck super smooth , but still no model 20 , but close.
@@guaporeturns9472 cool. Might have to take mine out for a shoot now.
@@Yukon12gauge00buck 31 or 20 .. or 870?
@@Yukon12gauge00buck?
I have read that Remington designers were given the task of developing a shotgun to compete commercially with the Win model 12. They took the model 17 and reworked it into a side eject with a few other improvements and changes. The 31 is in my op. the best pump ever built. Models 10 & 29 were a gunsmith's nightmare. The basic design of the 31 can be traced back to JM Browning's genius.
I agree it might of been the best pump shotgun ever for feel and the action is sooooo smooth. In fact you can argue as I do that Mossberg copied 90 percent of the action but their genius was making it easy to mass produce. Anyway thanks for the comment.
The Remington 17 is not related to the 10 or 29. It was designed by John Browning. The others by John Pedersen (Model 10) the 29 improved by CC Loomis, Remington Engineers.
That's correct but they are kissing cousins.... Still looking for a R17 for my collection.
Nice shotty, neat to hear history on em , another cool vid
Thx sorry I never replied.
I see you use Ballistol, breakfast of champions! (if they can afford it)!
When I can get it yes it smells like feet and G95 like pudding. Weird world
Very cool video
thx 4 years later
Hello good evening, I am looking for a short handle for my remington 31 would a handle from a remington 870 or a mossberg 500 be compatible on the M31? Thanks
Sorry I don't know they appear different.. I hope you get your gun running. THere are few online parts stores that might have it.
any idea what a remington 31 T is or what the T stands for ? thanks
It's actual an L for light or lite if you leave in that "walled community down below the 49th :) The L denotes an aluminium receiver Vs steel. If you have one of these you'll swear the action is floating on air. Its smooth.
Late reply but the T stands for trap. TB/TC is a trap gun with b/c grade wood
Reminds me of my Model 20-12g
Ok I will have to research the model 20.
check out my High Standard Riot Shotgun video. Highstandard made your sears Model 20 with virtually the same action and yes its very similar to the 31
My model 31 is a ww2 shotgun
That's me turning green with envy.
Mine has US military and a flaming bomb sybol engraved on it
JC Higgins model 20( High Standard pre Flite King) is the smoothest pumping shotgun ever made. Thanks for the video
My favourite pumpgun it doesn't hurt McQueen used it in the movie the Getaway. Thanks for watching.
@@Yukon12gauge00buck my favorite too. I don’t have a riot gun like he did but I have 3 model 20s. Love them.
i have a 31l as well... can you shoot slugs from it??
+Cy Klops (cyklops99) What choke do you have on it? I have a full choke so I will pass but if I had a modified I would certainly shoot slugs.
+Yukon12gauge full....
yes. ammo manufacturers keep lots of old shotguns on hand to prove that someone still using their, or inherited grandpas old gun will be able to shoot their ammo safely.
I have run lots of slugs through my 20 gauge 31 but only the so called "rifled slugs", slug with deep spiral grooves down the sides. Marketed to imply they will induce rotation as a result but the truth is that they are really compression relief groves that allow soft lead easy passage through a choke by giving room to mash down. Model 31 metallurgy is sound enough not to be overly concerned. I have shot of my slugs through 870 and Browning Pump shotguns, hundreds from the latter in the form of an improved modified and out to 125 yards still put two of my dedicated rifled barrel slug guns to shame. Even my Browning 2000 semi auto, with a full choke, with clamp on fiber optic sights to the rib will give me softball size groups at 100 yards. Secret is the old Browning models, before the widespread adoption of screw in chokes, had a parallel design to their choke that did wonders to slugs. Back to the 31. Use the soft "rifled slugs". Stay away from the dedicated designs, some actual bullets, even some actual steel designs from a foreign manufacturer and you will be alright. That, and each gun is different. Your modified choke gun could be deadly to 100 years and your cousins identical gun may struggle keeping everything inside the dimensions of a cereal box at 50 yard. Test different manufacturers and see. Just stay with the old style foster, i.e. rifled slug design.
Yes, but as you know slugs are slimy and they move really slow, you may be better off with snails.
I have the steal version of this gun
That's what I wanted but this landed in my lap cheap.
The pump on mine is not a corn cob style pump mine is smooth and checkerd
I would never buy a Mossberg the parts are made in Mexico and assembled in America that's why they're cheap.
If you want a good shotgun buy a old American-made one
Old wingmasters are the way to go if you can but I don't mind the Mossbergs just not my cup of tea either.
Not true at all that a mossberg 500 is any way related to any Remington !
Not officially but look at the action, the bolt and tell me that the Mossberg 500 isn't "heavily" inspired by the model 31. Look at the Ithaca it was almost a straight copy of the Remington 17. I contend that after you move the safety and make the bolt a little easier to manufacture they are very much same internally.
and externally. LOL
RemingtonMan1969 you are incorrect. The lifter is IDENTICAL in the Remington Model 29 and the Mossberg 500. The Mossberg is more correctly (as stated in this video) a copy of the High Standard Flite King. Don't let fanboy pride get in the way of the facts. It is VERY flattering that Mossbergs are basically Remington's at heart.
Sorry, Meant the Model 31, not 29.
