I can't tell you how thrilled I was to see this video on the Remington Model 31 pop up on RUclips this morning. I own a Model 31 that was my father's shotgun which I inherited when he passed away in the early 1980s. I have some recollection of when he might have gotten it in the late 1950's. He carried it when we hunted rabbits, pheasant and quail while I was a teenager back in Ohio. Except for some fruitless turkey hunting years ago, I have never had reason to use this old 12 gauge because it had a 30" Full Choke barrel and I had other guns which better suited my hunting needs. While I was perusing Ebay one evening back at the height of the pandemic, I came across a 25" barrel for a Model 31 with a factory installed Poly-choke which I purchased on the spot. I made some other discoveries in the course of researching information about my shotgun. The all-steel shotgun was dated 9/1949, (as am I). The new barrel was a full choke barrel dated 11/1948 and re-dated 11/1950 when it was cut down and the Poly-choke installed. I also did some research on RUclips to find how to completely strip the receiver and give it probably the first complete cleaning of its life. It is now slick as butta'. The Remington has now become my go-to dove gun and no longer languishes at the back of my gun cabinet. Thanks for your channel. I would like to see a feature on an old Ithaca Model 37 some time.

I had an old Winchester pump that I bought from a high school friend that was chambered for 16ga. Absolutely loved that shotgun but the magnum craze of the '90s made it all but impossible to find 16ga. shells so I ended up selling it. Every time I pick up my 870 I regret selling that Winchester.

That is a great old shotgun. I have a 16 gauge and so do my sons. 16 gauge is a great option that most people have no idea exists.

I like the 16 Ga. No particular reason except the16 Ga was the first shotgun I hunter with when I was about 14 years old. It was my Grandfathers Iver Johnson Champion. I have an older Mossberg 500 with C-Lect Choke that works quite well,

Great video!!! The 16 gauge is an interesting loading. I have a 16 gauge Ithaca 37 Featherlight that I’ve owned since I was 15 years old, 62 years ago. Mine has a 28 inch barrel with a fixed Modified choke. I got my first limit in the dove field with that gun. I had it refinished about five years ago and have only fired it once since then. That old Model 31 looks great, did you refinish it? The Polychoke system has always appeared bulbous to me, but it sure does the job. Prior to screw in chokes, the Cutts Compensator and Polychoke systems were the leading edge in choke versatility. You sure were dusting those clay targets, it should be a good option in the dove field this Fall.

My father carried one in 12 gauge with a Cutts Compensator choke for over 50 years he could have easily afforded a fancier gun but refused to part with it. He was very fast and accurate with it. He used it for pheasants, quail, partridge, home defense and even trap and skeet.

Sterling makes a 1oz Slug for the 16ga! One of my favorite gauges! I've had and have pumps and doubles in 16ga. Absolutely love it.Thats almost takes down like an older Remington, that became the Ithaca 37.

I have a 12 gauge 31 wuth a Herters choke , similar to a polychoke but without the cuts.It too shoots low. I have found putting the bottom of the metal where the bead rests just at the top of the receiver works well.
    They are very well made.
My dad had a 16 gauge Ithaca double that his dad gave him in the late 1940s with 28 inch barrel with mod and full chokes. I remeber those purple Federal shells and Remington were still green like the 12 gauge shells. My guess is the gun was made around 1924 or 1926 .Very nice handling gun but the chambers may have been a little shorter than 2/4 which made dad cautious and also it was hard finding shells.16 seems to be making a little comeback.
Intresting video , thanks for making it.

I like the c-lect choke (Mossberg named their version that since polychoke was its own company)on my Mossberg 190 16 gauge bolt action shotgun. Makes it very versatile since I cam go from full and modified choke for birdshot and buckshot to improved cylinder for slugs.

    I have a 1926 win. Model 12 16 gauge, one of the last 2 an 5/8 “ chambers . I have
plenty of 2 an 1/2” ammunition which reload nicely. Love the model 12 16 gauge. This one pattern’s slightly high at 25 yards with the 28” modified choke which is great for rising birds. Like you, I love the old wood and steel guns of the days gone bye.
Really enjoy your channel. Thanks for sharing your insights.

I immediately noticed the color difference bewteen the receiver and the barrel. Remington was certainly on the cutting edge back then going with the aluminum receiver to save weight. I would love to see you do a review on the Winchester Model 37 single barrel shotguns whenever you're able to run across one.

"The gun with the ball bearing action". Mine is the skeet model 12 gauge, made in 1949. The guys of the day hated the 870 when it came out, because it was made out of stamped parts, compared to the machined parts of the 31.

    • @marshmutt8975
      @marshmutt8975 Месяц назад

I'm certainly younger than the guys of the day, but I like the machined steel rifles and shotguns as well. I know the 870/1100s have stood the test of time, but they just don't do anything for me compared to the 31 and 11 and Winchester models 12 and 97. Unfortunately, Remington and Winchester were losing money on the "good stuff" so they had to do what they had to do.

Very nice old shotgun and especially the 16ga. I inherited my dad's Ithaca model 37 in 16ga. It is my favorite shotgun and gauge. My dad shot more pheasant than I can count with that shotgun. It is hard to find shells with more than 2 1/2 dram equivalent of power in them, so it shoots like most 20ga. today. I do still have some of my dads shells from the 1960 with 3 1/4 dr. eq. I like the velocity on the boxes now, but I miss the dr. eq. because that is what I am used to. What is your highest dr. eq. for 16ga. that you have found today?
