I push onwards with pain in my heart, for nothing is eternal, and friends are no exceptions. They all had their porpuse, their will, and drive. The pyromancer searching for lost knowledge. A faithful warrior who sought to make a sun of his own. A crestfallen warrior who was content to let the world pass by. A maiden of faith, searching for a meaning behind her curse.
The Catacomb Crab... I know it must have a purpose! IT MUST HAVE! We have to keep searching. There is something, somewhere, hidden by the Crabbo. The deepest lore of them all...
I never found Logan. I just walked right past him and only found out later from his Apprentice that he went to Sens Fortress but I still never found him. Then the merchant told me Logan failed so I assumed he died. Here is some advice: If you want to be rescued, don't let people walk past your cage without saying a word.
I've never played the game, but is it possible he didn't realize you'd be friendly? I'd imagine he wouldn't want to draw hostile attention to himself. Obviously I'm just making excuses for the game though
Audric, nah this was just a joke. barely any npc in the game says anything unless you interact with them (exceptions being basic merchants and such that they want you to find easily)
No, school teaches the bare minimum... at least here in the states. Problem is, is that when your strive for information, when you strive for extra knowledge, you want to learn more. You want to learn anything and everything there is to the universe until... you can't learn anymore. The lack of learning more leads to a depression, and eventually, you try desperately, clinging onto the hope to learn more. You yearn for it, and you know you cannot learn much more after that. You go insane, from the despair that you know it all, with no more of a purpose.
Jokes aside the current American school system is just that. The reason why I am not in college right now is because I got tired of being part of the system, wasting my money on trivial information I neither want or need or may ever hope to use in my future line of work, all for the sake of a series of end-game classes that are only a fraction of the time you spent to get there. Having to do grinding homework that takes up time that I could use elsewhere by getting a job or advancing down my career path, being forced to take part in the teacher-student politics in the generals while watching your teachers spiral into madness in a system that takes money from them and gives it to the administrators instead. This can apply to both college and public schools, the only difference being that the only currency you waste in the latter is time, something more valuable than gold and taken for granted more than breathing oxygen. If I could exchange all of my political science classes and all math past pre-algebra for classes that would actually do something to get me to where I want to be, I'd do it in a heartbeat.
And logan went insane because of the thirst for knowledge, not because he knew so much, even tho i hate to go to school, i need to say that learning wont make you go insane as long as you aren't interested in it MUCH
Is Logan's end really tragic, though? Personally I see his hollowing as a one of the few success' in the Souls series. In his homeland he was a hero and great teacher, but his own personal ambition was not to be famous or revered. He simply wanted to acquire knowledge (which is only a bad thing if he intended to use it for ill, which he didn't). Taking that ambition as far as it could go was to seek out the Duke's Archives and learn its secrets. Though we don't know how old Logan is exactly, we know he looks pretty old, and is probably older still than he appears because of the curse. That means that becoming undead may well have let him live past his natural lifespan... Long enough to attain his dream. Though it's never directly stated (that I know of), I think various quest-lines throughout the series strongly hints that an undead turns hollow when they lose their will to move forward. In most cases, this means giving up (you could even argue that this is reflected in the players themselves, either persevering against impossible odds and constant death and rebirth or rage quitting the game and becoming hollow). With Logan, however, I think we see a rare case of hollowfication caused not by hopelessness but by contentment. Logan got everything he ever wanted out of life and was able to turn hollow (see die) happily. That's just my take on it, though.
Saying that though, Logan Didn't appear to be Hollow. He seemed human. Whatever knowledge he found made him insane, as it did with seath. Who knows what secrets were buiried in those archives.
Theory: When Big Hat Logan goes insane, you find him in Seethe's chamber, naked (apart from his hat), with white dragon breath. He's the only character who strips before or after hollowing. When you talk to him beforehand, he's marveling at Seeth and his collection... I think when he went insane, he tried to BECOME an undead dragon like Seethe. Stripped off his clothes, took on dragon breath, and was just like "I AM A DRAGON!"
I always had a theory about Griggs. He wears black armor and the slumbering dragon ring. He's found "locked" in a room with a dead body wearing sorcerer gear. He tirelessly pursues Logan. He sells you fall control, and spells that limit visibility and sound you make, all labeled as spy, Spook spells. I think he is a Vinheim Spook, sent to monitor the activity of the legendary Logan, and possibly kill him if he learns too much about immortality. Sort of like the guy that betrays his Way of White compatriots to keep them from getting the Rite of Kindling. He lets you think you save him (or maybe you do) and he acts like he's in awe of Big Hat, but maybe he's much more sinister. Pure speculation though, maybe he learned mobility and masking spells to speed through areas when pursuing a target he truly does love and want to keep up with, right?
People marvel at the thought of Logan going nude as himself trying to be like Seath. But what you got here, is some real shit. That completely makes sense, at first I just thought he was on the nuts but now that I've realized the truth...shit just got real. Best Game Ever
You know, I think that would actually tie in with Dark Souls 3 and Orbeck of Vinheim really well. He's another sorcerer that teaches you spook spells, but he says upfront that he is a spook. I don't think it would be too far out to say that Griggs held a similar position during the time of Dark Souls 1. I believe Orbeck even says that the more accomplished sorcerers are more likely to have attempts on their life. Could be that was the case for Logan.
I think as much as they tell story through items descriptions, but also through item placement on characters and the world, you have to be on track here.
Alright so this is kinda important Logan is a Scottish name and it is a surname which was originally derived from a Scottish place name meaning "little hollow" in Scottish Gaelic. little HOLLOW!
U know, i was kind of sad about killing Logan. The guy was like a jolly grandfather who was somehow always in a good mood. Then he had to go batshit insane and try to crystalize you...while naked...
in sen's fortress, there are 2 dead bodies- one with a slumbering dragoncrest ring, another in black sorcerer garbs and with hush on their person. I think these were bodyguards of logan that died trying to protect him from the horrors of Sen's fortress but failed, thus he got trapped in a cage, and the rest is history.
Havel put logan in the cage. It's in his war diary, as he travels to sens fortress on the way to dukes archives and discovers the horrors of Seath, and decides that Gwyn has condoned this and has become corrupted. He even seeks to find some way to stop Gwyn, before being arrested for treason.
+Collin Thompson the cool part is how the player becomes hollow, basically just quitting and never coming back to the game means you've given up your only true purpose.
That's literally what it says in his description. He wears a big hat to block out the noise and sight of people around him so he can concentrate, hence why he's called "Big Hat."
No matter how smart the sorcerer's get they will never top Rickert and his discovery that just staying behind iron bars will make you immortal without driving you insane
Here's my take on the sorcerers of Lordran. They are all connected by one common thread: they failed to accept their limitations and lost everything because of it. Griggs could not accept his own weakness and challenges Sen's Fortress in order to follow in Logan's footsteps. He dies (possibly repeatedly so) and hollows because of this. Logan could not accept the limits of his own mind; the Duke's Archive contains an unfathomably vast amount of knowledge, and Logan tried too hard to absorb it all. No human, mortal or immortal, could possibly learn everything contained within those hundreds of thousands of tomes, and Logan lost his mind in the attempt. Perhaps the realization of the impossibility of his goal was what finally made him crack. And Seath could not accept that the secret of immortality is that there is none; the everlasting dragons had it but it was simply out of Seath's reach. The Primordial Crystal was clearly only a temporary solution; the Channelers are still kidnapping undead for experiments and studying the dragon-like beasts of the realm, so Seath is still trying to find that elusive secret of true immortality to no avail, and his madness grew with his desperation.
i really wonder what this world was like before the undead curse and before the flame started to go out. did humanity just live normally, like any other civilization? did the kings and gods just rule over the people like usual?
yeah pretty much, you can learn about specific nations in the item descriptions but for the most part life was pretty normal until the flame wanes and the undead/unkindled return for the next cycle
5:26 Producers: so, you're old and wise but your senses are starting to dwindle. This place is taking its toll on your mind. You can almost feel it happening but are unable to notice at the same time. Logan V.O: I have just the thing (channels his inner Ozzy)
Forbidden and maddening knowledge is a frequent theme in a lot of fantasy such a in the archives that drove both Seath and Logan mad. Probably my favorite touchup is in Stephen King's 'The Eyes of the Dragon'. In the book, a sorcerer allots himself 10mins each day to read from an ancient and evil book of knowledge, because any longer than that will drive you mad. An interesting theme, but it is never expanded upon. I'd love for a video game, book or movie to dive deeper in the "why" and the "how". Just some nerd ramblings.
I admit it, Logan's kind of a dick. He doesn't care that Seath did horrible experiments to innocent people; he just admires the dragon for his sorcery. He's described as being antisocial and wears a big hat to block people out. The only reason he cares about the player is that they're interesting in sorcery like him, IF they're even interested in sorcery. Compared to characters like Siegmeyer, Sieglinde, Solaire, Laurentius, the Fair Lady and Gwyn (to name a few), he's a pretty selfish and unlikeable person, far from the most memorable NPC in the game. But dammit, I love the poor guy! For all of Logan's faults he does see the player as an ally in the quest for knowledge, and he clearly has some degree of affection for the player; he's been surrounded by people who don't care for sorcery as he does, and he enjoys finding someone who shares his interest in magic. On that ground, he and the player are indeed equals and he sees this. He is a great sorcerer, but he doesn't lord this over the player, who is just starting out. Instead of flaunting his knowledge, he is more than happy to simply pass it down. By the time he sets out for Seath's library, he and the player would seem to be friends. And for someone who's antisocial, he's quite eloquent and charismatic. I think of him as the Sherlock Holmes of Dark Souls, sometimes. Asshole though he may be, he's so passionate about what he does that it's hard to dislike him. He may need you to meet intelligence requirements, but so does Sherlock Holmes, if you want to find any meaning in his company. Plus, Logan was the first NPC who I saw go crazy/hollow, and the first I had to kill. It was pretty jarring, killing the guy who sold me powerful magic that I would have died (more often) without. Basically, although common sense would tell me that Logan really isn't a great guy and that there are much better characters in the game, I just can't help but love the eccentric sorcerer. Besides, it's painful to see a once proud and powerful sorcerer, who made bolts to match the power of Gwyn's lightning, reduced to a insane shell of his former self, wearing no clothes save for his hat and his underwear in a van attempt to imitate the being whose knowledge he sought.
***** I don't think of him as sefish everyone in dark souls has a sense of selfishness. like siegemeyer just leaving his daughter alone for "adventure" and to be killed by her in the end. that is selfish to. Gwyn sacrifices himself because he cannot bea to see how all he has done will fade in away and cannot accept the change or adept. and u can apply to everybody in a way. Just because u don't like to be too much with other people and stay for ur self doesn't mean ur more selfish than social people who carve for attention. and yeah the expirements are really asshole like but there always must be a bad guy because without them how do u know that u are really good?
Goodbye friend, Don't you dare go hollow. A few hours later. That's a fine pyromancy will you tell me where you found such a fine sorcery, finally he said that iconic phrase "Don't you dare go hollow" one hour later I'm heading to the demon ruins and I see laurentius. I saw what had happened so I ran past him...sad.
These videos are absolutely phenomenal. They are so deep, and they make you think, and it truly shows the depth of the Dark Souls storyline. Amazing job.
He tried being "Thick Framed Glasses Logan", "Fat Suit Logan", and "Handlebar Mustache Logan" first, but he kept being recognized. I think he's dressing up like a dragon now.
I would figure as much, otherwise you'd pretty much have to dedicate a very large chunk of times to these. Thanks for them by the way I love them! The other theory I had for Logan was that he went there searching for those Archives but by finding them he had no new height to work towards and was content to just exist and learn at the Archives, causing him to begin to hollow. Honestly, your theory is likely better thought out than my own. One of the great things about this game
This series is about interpretation, not speculation. You'll just have to bear that in mind when you watch, because it goes against storytelling to say "this might not be true". Anyway, the developers confirmed at one point that Humanity is in fact part of the Dark Souls. Whether it's supported in-game is another story though, you're correct.
I write the stories, and they're based on in-game information. Most of it is described in the actual game (and a bit of it is implied, and my own interpretation)
The one reason i loved this is that it also carries a moral with it and that is meaningful to some more than other " with great knowledge comes great power but also responsibility" In short this was inspirational and i love it keep up the amazing work
If I'm not mistaken Logan didn't hollow because of the archive's knowledge. From what I heard Logan tried to turn himself in to a dragon in Seath's chamber but he couldn't because he refused to take off his hat. That's why you find his robes in his spot because he went to do the ritual and when he couldn't he lost hope and hollowed. If Logan wasn't already going mad with knowledge and ambition he would never have needed his hat to block out the world and he probably would've become immortal. He charged me 40,000 souls for Soul Spear though so I don't feel bad.
For some reason I just can't stop watching your videos. I think its your video editing and your narration makes the story of Dark Souls a lot more than what I interpreted it to be. Its a very sad story.
Ive always wondered where the hell the books in the Archives came from. Did Seathe write them? Were they some of the dragons books and if so, why the hell are they so damn small compared to Seathe? How could he read them when he went blind? So many questions about that place.
Playing Poker with Artorias, Gough, and Ciaran. I remember Arti screaming "Oh Gwyn, if i loose now, i throw my self into the Abyss". He was clearly bluffing.. and lost the bet
Im amazed that i have never discovered this channel before. These videos are amazing and im only working through a few at the minute, well done with these.
i was just about to comment on that myself. but still these vids are one of a kind my good sir. im pretty sure you have the most calming voice on youtube.
+Decaying Reverie If you left without killing him, I'm pretty sure you can go back to whatshisnuts in the Bell tower and buy absolution from him and that makes the NPCs friendly again
When my friends first start playing Dark Souls I say "This is just the tip of the iceberg!" Thanks to your creativity (and excellent hunting of in-game info) I feel like I'm still looking at the tip too! Great channel.
So does Griggs ever leave Firelink Shrine? I bought all his stuff and told him that Logan is in the Duke's Archives. Griggs said he would go there, but he hasn't left yet...
Since Seath was born without the scales of Immortality he would eventually die. Was it because of Seath that the age of Fire could start? After all in the opening they said that there was no life or death so Seath could be the first being that could die meaning that he would oppose the order of the world leading to the birth of the First Flame. Weird theory but could it be plausible?
Nah, i have a ps3 and i played DeS before DkS. In response to that other guys question, i think that the "Giants" archstone was cut content, and that they expanded on it heavily in Dark Souls!
@@Rakuyo13 judging by what he put, their both sorcerer's,both have big hats,so possibility seath twisted Logan slowly turning him into a new generation of sorcerer's,the crystal sages
Maybe the first sin was stealing fire from the gods (everlasting dragons) and opening Pandora's Box ( the power of the great soul, which became the lord souls). Maybe Seath was the scholar of the first sin, since humans used the power of souls to become more than they were (hollows), why couldn't he ? He found out about the cycle of flame and darkness and, being mortal himself, was driven mad by the revelation. This lead to the events from Dark Souls. Then, when the cycle started again, he was reborn as Lord Aldia, who learned of all this using the ashen mist heart, thus the person in the memory of giants. He then desperately sought a cure for the curse, which made the history of Lordran become the doom of Dragnleic.
+KaiserAfini "The Scholar of the First Sin," would be one who studies the "First Sin" or learns from that sin. Aldia is the Scholar, but perhaps Seath was the Perpetrator. The "First Sin" would then refer to Seath's betrayal of the true dragons. Popular theory is that the first sin was Gwyn and his deities lying to mankind about the nature of Dark and Fire. I feel that Seath's betrayal is far more likely, as it predates Gwyn's sin.
Otherwise I loved the video just like your other videos. Really great, thought-provoking and encompassing. I'm always stunned at how much information you cram into these videos, I mean, it was always there, you just explain and interpret it so well.
I think his looking at it from the wrong angle i think instead of it being something he found out in the tomes its what Logan had to pay to find it out, something seath would want and wouldn't mind having a worthless undead roam his halls, hell it was even said its like he knew you were coming...
I didn't ever find him in Sen's Fortress. Once I was able to get through the earlier parts (past the swinging blades), I went all the way through the battle with the Iron Golem, beat it on my first try, and continued to Anor Londo, never realizing that there was a bonfire *INSIDE* of the Fortress. And given that I was trying to beat the game before my spring break was over, I didn't bother going back afterwards to find anything I may have missed. There's a pretty long list of things I still need to do in Dark Souls, and I guess this is another addition to the list.
I think you are actually wrong here. You say that Big Hat Logan was driven mad by the knowledge from Sith's library, but I don't think that's true at all. Undead are kept strong by their sense of purpose. Lucathiel remains sane because she believes there's salvation in Drangleic, the protagonist remains sane because he needs to ring the bells. Logan's goal, his self-chose purpose, was to find the Sith's library. Which he did. He has completed his task, and without a goal to walk to, he fell to the hollowing, his sense of self erroding without a guiding beacon.
I think that what you say is possible, but I more beleive the theory proposed in the video. I say this because I think that logen's real goal was knowledge and wisdom, the library was only a means to that knowledge.
+Archer AZ Considering how the Grand Archives are in Dark Souls 3, it likely drove him to madness because he had no protection from its influence. That protection, in the form of some type of candle wax, was not created until much later.
Bloodborne's Insight. That would actually be pretty cool. But no, I'd assume there are just things that aren't meant for human eyes in Duke's Archives. Y'know, fantasy stuff.
St. Thomas supposedly acquired knowledge of the philosophical truth, he then went "mad" wanting to burn all of his previous teachings and no one understood a thing he said.
Very late reply, but two possibilities present themselves... The first is that with Seath's fascination with other draconic beings, the golems are there to contain/observe the Hydra. The second, more likely... behind the Hydra is a big golem that has captured Princess Dusk of Oolacile, who somehow ended up in the Chosen Undead's time. And Manus's pendant is found on a golem in Seath's Archives... maybe he was trying to study Oolacile and even Dusk herself? (After all, Oolacile was a town of sorceries, which would be of interest to him, and the story of its fall to the Abyss would be of fascination to Gwyn's family or even Frampt...)
imagine if they shoved all this lore right in your face like most games with ambitious world building do. the lack of information is what makes the game so great like especially after meeting both primordial serpents.
that's the point. if you just straight up play through the game without paying attention to fine details or thinking critically, most of the plot and story will fly over your head and you can be easily duped into thinking "whoopee I'm a magic superwarrior and I saved the world!" when the true ending(s) and meaning of the story are much more ambiguous and comprehensive. it's up to you to read the descriptions of items, listen closely to what characters do and don't say, and pay attention to the fine details of the world to divulge & interpret the story's meaning for yourself.
AnimalPlanet0 I was going to insult you, but clearly you are only a spoiled kid, you deserve patience: I played in english this game and it's not my first language, but in your infinite knowledge you immediately criticized me without knowing anything, bah.
rapsody230 Lol... what is the point of your argument? You call me spoiled kid and it's you who wants the game story in your hand... english is not my first language too, and I criticized you because you said Dark soul's story it's not good because it's not clear, just read again what you wrote. You can answer my argument insulting me or with an argument but i'll not read it... I saw your comments on others video and you are a type of person that I dislike
Uh, yeah, I get that you're trying to paint a sort of landscape for some of the characters of Dark Souls via these types of videos... but my problem with them is that not only is it a representation/dramatization that doesn't accurately represent the potential scenarios of which you'll see in the game... it also skews and misrepresents VERY BASIC DETAILS of these characters. Case in point, Big Hat Logan, this very video. Your video has him speaking to you with loving caution... but this ignores the fact that Big Hat will SNUB YOU if you don't meet an intelligence requirement of 14 after rescuing him from Sen's Fortress. He promises to teach you Sorcery. Yet, Griggs of Vinheim will teach you regardless of your intellect. More telling is that if you remain below this threshold, when Griggs finds Logan's spells... he'll still "teach you." Logan makes assumptions of you based on a prejudice. He eschews wisdom for intellect. He wants knowledge for knowledge sake and it undoes him. More evidence that Big Hat is, quite frankly, a self-centered asshole, is when you actually have the opportunity to rescue him a second time. When he sits in his cell, the only thing he can tell you is that he's so sad not to be near the tombs of Seathe's archive, completely ignoring the fact that there is the very audible sound of Pisacas crying in a way that is distinctly like a human female. The Pisacas drop humanity, the game beats you over the head these things were human, like everything in Seathe's horrible human experiment that is the Duke's Archives. Do the ends justify the means? Would YOU like to be experimented on in that way? Clearly these Pisacas didn't, who used to be members of the Princess Guard. But if you attempt to kill them, they will run away from you rather than fight you. They don't want to die, even as monsters. Logan stands the most capable of finding out how they were altered and possibly finding a way to reverse the process... but he sits in his cell, fixated on simply just reading the books. He gives them no regard whatsoever. But he'll share his spells with you, for real this time!, if you let him out! Bastard. He even tells you "I bear no enmity toward that wonderful, scaleless beast." You more than likely have two eyes, two ears... Big Hat Logan is not some tragic figure. He's a trope of most Wizards from Dungeons and Dragons type books, such as the type that TSR produces. He'll entertain an apprentice and at first sign of trouble, take off. He, again, values knowledge for the sake of having it. His words in the Duke's Archives are like that of a scientist telling you that Joseph Mengele, the Angel of Death, had invaluable resources when doing unethical human experiments. He is a cold representation of intelligence, but with no regard for the people around him, such as Griggs and the Pisacas, he's not many steps away from being just like Seathe. Seathe defies nature in wanting to live forever, at the expense of ruining countless lives in pursuit of that goal. How fitting that Big Hat read this and then strive to emulate such a horrible monster. He does not hollow, he merely drives himself insane in absorbing tombs of information. Perhaps there was greater work at hand, but how fitting a successor for such a horrible monster. Logan does not Hollow, he goes mad. He's definitely naked, and he's definitely attacking you, but he is not a Hollow. His skin isn't putrified when you combat him. He's still human, just a human monster. This plays into the detail of the Dragon Scholar race option in the beginning of Dark Souls 1. "Scholarly looks invite scorn." No better example than if you mark Logan's demeanor. A cold hearted monster.
***** Isn't hollowing what occurs when a regular undead permanently loses all of it's souls and humanity? The lack of those two causes it to be unable to function as it used to and drives it insane? If so, shouldn't it still be possible for an undead to go insane through regular means without going hollow, so long as the undead still has some humanity and souls left?
Fraggr92 My previous response got eaten, but my problem with this guy's retort is that "I believe death accelerates the hollowing" is probably gonna lead to some really narrow interpretation of the game. Nothing I said is particularly rooted in "shit I made up." When I see other people hollowing in the game, specifically the other human NPCs, when they go out into the world and are hollowed... they're undead visibly in a state of being Hollowed. The condition the game asks you to revert, putrified skin, looking like a zombie, etc. Nothing about this denotes "acceleration", it's based on the same observation that you see in the video. "He goes out his own... and then I tell you a sad story about why he's hollow." The information that Logan reads is different and it subverts your interaction with him. It makes sense that compared to Laurentius, who's magic is thematically aligned with primal human urge that Logan's raw intellect ultimately results in him driving himself mad. Because apparently that guy's opinion about Hollowing is running counter to what you see in the game, I'd want to know what he's basing this on as far as evidence or a reading of the game. It could be compelling... but a sentence isn't a lot to go on, so it's not to me, atm. I'm specifically waiting to see something like "Dark Souls 2", but that would be a "get out of jail free card" of sorts. He says Death accelerates the Hollowing, and yet it's not the first time we've run into characters that aren't Hollowed and suggest that insanity and Hollowing aren't necessarily the same type of affliction. We are shown the effects of Hollowing and then we see two characters go mad for different reasons. If you kill the red eyed Chaos Bug in the secret path leading to Lost Izalith, then Solaire, who has PLENTY OF REASON to go Hollow, doesn't have a bug burrow into his brain. Aside from the prevailing theories about Solaire, I just want to say that the game presents NPCs that don't necessarily follow the trend of going Hollow and we know that Hollowing has a specific look. When you die, you "reverse hollowing." Logan isn't Hollowed, and someone's loose interpretation of what that means just based on "I believe death blah blah blah", I need to actually see someone make an argument because I don't think it's a particularly strong suggestion, it reeks of something else but I don't feel obligated to guess at what that is.
After watching your videos it truly amazes me how in depth the lore in this game is, even if a lot is fan speculation. It makes me wish that the game itself had a greater focus on story, as most people play it without really realising.
The bit about Vinheim assassins was probably worth bringing up in the video, because i like giving people the option to bring their own interpretation into things. As to whether he's spying on Logan or not...I think that's a bit of a stretch for his character personally. But hey, to each their own! Thanks for reminding me about that piece of information.
Logan didn't go insane. He simply didn't want us to destroy seath. He propably admired seath's efforts for knowledge and he couldn't let him die by a greedy hollow just for souls
Kazuto Kirigaya not in the game though lol. once i got my int pretty high i killed every boss by just spamming spells and never even got hit. the game got way too easy so i switched back to my dex build.
Wow what a good video! This one in particular, Is one I really like. So much detail to the lore and it makes so much sense. Learning the lore to this game is a long and sad road.
Perfect as always. I didn`t know that Griggs disappears to Anor Londo, I thought that he is one the few who actually survive. Logan on the other hand is pure style as well as substance, an true exemple for this game's depth. About the bonfire in the cell: Hm, "it's almost like he knew you were coming", I guess you are hinting that Logan betrayed the Chosen Undead to Seath to spare himself maybe a worse fate, knowing that if he was in a chamber, the Chosen Undead would come and rescue him again.
Thats the same like in the real world, all true heroes are dying or became crazy or something other. There is a German word for this people "Märtyrer" (Pardon for wors English)
No, if a person goes insane in the pursuit of knowledge who is to say whether that was a good or bad thing, the only person who can decide that is the person themselves

Here is some advice: If you want to be rescued, don't let people walk past your cage without saying a word.
Lmao!
I've never played the game, but is it possible he didn't realize you'd be friendly?
I'd imagine he wouldn't want to draw hostile attention to himself. Obviously I'm just making excuses for the game though
I stumbled upon him, and killed him. He was really hostile 😔
Audric, nah this was just a joke. barely any npc in the game says anything unless you interact with them (exceptions being basic merchants and such that they want you to find easily)
He actually does say something he tells to help him out
Logan doesn't actually hollow, he goes insane.
Yo vaati I was a supporter of your souls art book and I love it! And I was wondering if you would make another soul of a great artist video?

Lesson learned: Knowledge makes you insane. Stop the insanity and take down schools.
Zachery Lawshe It was a joke, but you could make it a political discussion. But only on a different comment.
IRAMantisShrimp k
+Dick Tingler logical.
that is a pretty cool way of thinking about it.
He technically never hollowed.
+Cultureghost yeah

Theory: When Big Hat Logan goes insane, you find him in Seethe's chamber, naked (apart from his hat), with white dragon breath. He's the only character who strips before or after hollowing. When you talk to him beforehand, he's marveling at Seeth and his collection... I think when he went insane, he tried to BECOME an undead dragon like Seethe. Stripped off his clothes, took on dragon breath, and was just like "I AM A DRAGON!"
Yeah, hehehe that sounds like Crazy old man Logan
I think the no clothes refer to the scalelessness of Seath.
Could well be.
TheRainSnake Devlopers added in his hat so people would understand who he is.
Yeah, that makes sense. Wouldn't want it to be some random hollow.
I think as much as they tell story through items descriptions, but also through item placement on characters and the world, you have to be on track here.
lastfirstborn2 you should of uploaded this somewhere else as well
Yeah and if only the logan x archives encounter didn't happen, we could say that he killed logan and played off that he left
Alright so this is kinda important Logan is a Scottish name and it is a surname which was originally derived from a Scottish place name meaning "little hollow" in Scottish Gaelic. little HOLLOW!

That same logic doesn’t apply to everyone though.

U know, i was kind of sad about killing Logan. The guy was like a jolly grandfather who was somehow always in a good mood. Then he had to go batshit insane and try to crystalize you...while naked...

Dark Souls 3 truly shows how right and spot on Vaati has been throughout all this. Awesome

i really wonder what this world was like before the undead curse and before the flame started to go out. did humanity just live normally, like any other civilization? did the kings and gods just rule over the people like usual?
yeah pretty much, you can learn about specific nations in the item descriptions but for the most part life was pretty normal until the flame wanes and the undead/unkindled return for the next cycle
actually each time the fire is linked everything reverts back to that and the darksigns go away. they only come back when the fire fades

"The less that is known, the better." After watching these videos I never want to fight another enemy in Dark Souls.

"Oh, don't worry about that. I die all the time."
I love listening to the lore laid out by the research youve done. It really brings a whole new aspect to the story and to the game itself
Ive always wondered where the hell the books in the Archives came from. Did Seathe write them? Were they some of the dragons books and if so, why the hell are they so damn small compared to Seathe? How could he read them when he went blind? So many questions about that place.

Man if I had known all the stuff your videos have taught me during my first playthrough I would have bawled my eyes out
Maybe the first sin was stealing fire from the gods (everlasting dragons) and opening Pandora's Box ( the power of the great soul, which became the lord souls).
The first sin is the Witch of Izalith recreating the first flame. Lost Sinner's item description point towards that as well.
Otherwise I loved the video just like your other videos. Really great, thought-provoking and encompassing. I'm always stunned at how much information you cram into these videos, I mean, it was always there, you just explain and interpret it so well.
now I want to know what was in the archive that bothered logan so much
I think his looking at it from the wrong angle i think instead of it being something he found out in the tomes its what Logan had to pay to find it out, something seath would want and wouldn't mind having a worthless undead roam his halls, hell it was even said its like he knew you were coming...

Seath*
+RenOfTheFields I don't give a seath how it's spelled.
+Thomas Vinci Ha, gg
I think that what you say is possible, but I more beleive the theory proposed in the video. I say this because I think that logen's real goal was knowledge and wisdom, the library was only a means to that knowledge.
+Archer AZ Considering how the Grand Archives are in Dark Souls 3, it likely drove him to madness because he had no protection from its influence. That protection, in the form of some type of candle wax, was not created until much later.

Has anyone ever questioned why theres crystal golems at the hydra in darkroot basin?

If they made clearer these stories dark souls would have an awesome plot! But in-game it's all uncertain and not clear.
imagine if they shoved all this lore right in your face like most games with ambitious world building do. the lack of information is what makes the game so great like especially after meeting both primordial serpents.
that's the point. if you just straight up play through the game without paying attention to fine details or thinking critically, most of the plot and story will fly over your head and you can be easily duped into thinking "whoopee I'm a magic superwarrior and I saved the world!" when the true ending(s) and meaning of the story are much more ambiguous and comprehensive. it's up to you to read the descriptions of items, listen closely to what characters do and don't say, and pay attention to the fine details of the world to divulge & interpret the story's meaning for yourself.

Thanks for all your amazing videos! Keep up the great work!
More telling is that if you remain below this threshold, when Griggs finds Logan's spells... he'll still "teach you."
Logan makes assumptions of you based on a prejudice.
Bastard.
He even tells you "I bear no enmity toward that wonderful, scaleless beast."
You more than likely have two eyes, two ears...
Not to be that guy but it's tome(s)* not tomb, tomb(s) is what you put dead people in. :P
Given the size of my post... cough.
Late at night, got a coffee and a new keyboard with nice sound, lets write an essay
"He goes out his own... and then I tell you a sad story about why he's hollow."
The information that Logan reads is different and it subverts your interaction with him.
It makes me wish that the game itself had a greater focus on story, as most people play it without really realising.
why not name him LARGE HAT LOGAN?
cuz it doesnt sound good
How about Hugh Mungus Logan?
+MrSocialish
"HUMONGOUS WHAT?"
Oh my god that's depressing
Vaati, I love your videos, keep up the good work man!
Logan didn't go insane. He simply didn't want us to destroy seath. He propably admired seath's efforts for knowledge and he couldn't let him die by a greedy hollow just for souls
So in other words, sorcery sucks
Kazuto Kirigaya not in the game though lol. once i got my int pretty high i killed every boss by just spamming spells and never even got hit. the game got way too easy so i switched back to my dex build.
lol afro wants to have a word with dex players
You can pretty much clear the game with sorcery only and it's not too challenging either.
Mitch Dickeson yea im halfway through NG+ with my sorcerer and ive yet to use my weapon lol
lol Sorcery is balanced though. Geez
It felt too much like I was directly imitating the character "vaati". I want to give this channel / avatar my own identity.
So, nobody commented on this?
@@zynx1828 seems you were the first
But why do they call him Big Hat Logan?
Wow what a good video! This one in particular, Is one I really like. So much detail to the lore and it makes so much sense. Learning the lore to this game is a long and sad road.
Like my hat?
Yes indeed. I have a few spare souls. Mind teaching me some new spells? That bitch Priscilla won't know what hit her.
There is a German word for this people "Märtyrer"
(Pardon for wors English)
lol it ok
uh do you mean martyr
Yes I mean.
Ferdinant Unfugfasel I believe you're quoting The Dark Knight.
This is why your character can only have 99 intelligence because if you have 100 or more you become insane. And Logan had 199 Int.
This is a perfect example of why we shouldn't find the answers of he universe. It should be left unknown.
No
No.
No, if a person goes insane in the pursuit of knowledge who is to say whether that was a good or bad thing, the only person who can decide that is the person themselves
