    The current fat tire gives a huge amount of grip, but when it goes over that line it just snaps loose and it is pretty much impossible to correct. I think the smaller sidewall lets the car slide just a bit more, but it will be easier for the drivers to correct it. Less tire deformation makes the car more predictable.

    • @xeigen2
      @xeigen2 3 года назад +57

      Most of the snappiness of an F1 car comes from the yaw sensitivity of the aero package. They downforce drops off rapidly when the car isn't going straight through the air.

      Is it, though? If a sidewall is larger, it takes more time for it to break traction and unload the tire, shorter sidewall would take longer to snap out of grip since it is not preloaded so much, but when it does, it has less momentum to realign to the rim therefore becoming more snappy in a way.

    Being into mountain biking and hearing about this is kinda funny to me just because of how modern bikes use wheel sizes at 27.5" and 29". The bigger wheels are harder to maneuver, accelerate, and decelerate, but have faster roll speeds once they do finally get up to speed. Of course, the bikes are all designed around bigger wheels and stuff, which are also, crucially, directly underneath the rider. Basically, what I'm thinking (and probably wrong about given the differences between a bike and a freaking F1 car) is that as FIA regulations change and billions of dollars go into R&D, the "finished product" could see some benefits as well. After all, top fuel dragsters, supercars, and some mountain bikes/motorcycles run mixed wheel sizes and are designed around that idea, so there's that to consider

    HOW DO YOU NOT TALK ABOUT BRAKES?! One of the largest reasons production sports cars are getting bigger wheels is so they can fit bigger brakes. That's also the reason big luxury cars are getting big wheels too, they need to stop those gigantic land barges. Now f1 teams will be able to put larger brakes on their cars to make them stop on a dime even more... or at least stop as quickly as the tires will allow before sliding. Idk how y'all can forget about this crucial factor considering brakes are the usual reason for people like time attack teams get bigger wheels.

    • @morganbakerable
      @morganbakerable 3 года назад +1

      F1 cars use inboard brakes so they are completely independent of the wheel diameter. This is a big part of the reason why street car wheels keep getting bigger though.

    I've been trying to explain this concept to so many people who can't seem to grasp it. Now I have something I can use as a reference :D Thanks.
    Even if the 18" wheel is the exact same weight as the 13", it will still be more difficult to spin and stop because the barrel is farther away from the center.
    This also means your brakes work more to slow down the wheels, so they heat up more.

    • @exploranator
      @exploranator 3 года назад

      HOWEVER, with far, FAR larger brake rotors available, airflow and heat dissipation on brakes is dramatically increased. Heat control leads to greater modulation ability and consistency (remember no ABS in F1.)
      Porsche pioneered 19" rear wheels on their 935's and tried to put 19" wheels on ultra-low-profile tires on the front, so truly gigantic brake rotors could be used, but the sidewall was too short and the tires slipped off of the rims during cornering due to the slow sloping nose of the 911-variant race cars, of which the 935 was one.

    Great video but missing two important points:
    1. Contact patch: The aerodynamic forces pushes the car down and on the original 13" wheels, the tire is squashed down to increase the contact patch significantly, thus improving grip (equivalent to having much wider tires but without the aerodynamic drag).
    2. Fashion for larger wheels: This is the main reason for the F1 wheel change. The reason most modern cars have larger rim sizes is because of the larger brake disks and calipers that are fitted inside the rim space. F1 do not have their brakes inside the rim, so larger wheels are just going to make them a lot slower and not better.

    • @weatheranddarkness
      @weatheranddarkness 3 года назад +2

      At first. You can bet that a lot of the stated reduction in downforce will have been clawed back by the time teams launch their first cars, and even more so by the time the regs change again.

      Wrong. They're going to ground effect. Much more downforce.

    • @weatheranddarkness
      @weatheranddarkness 3 года назад +3

      @@dbraven1981 correction, this is what happens when everything gets squished into soundbites. What's happening is that undercar tunnels are being re-allowed, but the surfaces above the floor are being restricted. Ground effect is more efficient, as in a higher "lift":drag ratio, but it doesn't provide "more" downforce. The 2022 regs are designed such that the total downforce expected from a car with legal bodywork "should" be lower than a car with a body that complies with current regs, and with the other main difference being that a larger portion of that downforce on the new car will come from the floor/underbody.

    • @weallfollowmanutd
      @weallfollowmanutd 3 года назад

      @@dbraven1981 you need to do your research. Just because they're using ground effect, doesn't mean it's faster, because the FIA removed a lot of bodywork downforce. They even said it will be at least a few seconds slower.

    • @ryanokeefe12
      @ryanokeefe12 3 года назад +1

      @@weallfollowmanutd They removed downforce from the top side of the car, but to offset this, have allowed more work to be done to the underside of the chassis and floor.
      The cars should be 'slipperier' in a straight line, which will help with top end speed.
      I think the biggest thing that will make the cars slower isn't the new rules - it's just the fact that the cars are "new" + the budget cap allows for less resources in development.
      Compare 2017 cars (first year of the current ruleset) to 2020; Bahrain Qualifying: 2017 | Bottas (1:28.769). 2020 | Hamilton (1:27.264).
      Thats over 1.5 seconds.
      Note - I didn't compare to this year as it's not really apples to apples considering the rule changes for the floor, which were the FIA's second go at slowing the cars down.

      @@freeski919 1- they cant, they need impact structures
      3- they are already doing that next year, and the cars will likely generate less dirty air.
      4- They plan on doing that really soon if the next gen cars work as intended.
      5- This is where i wanted to get. The penalties last race werent for "hard racing", they were for pushing a car off the track. Others proved time and time again that you can attack and defend on that very same corner without pushing the others to the side, and punishing those that go overboard also means that drivers will defend in a cleaner way, which also leads to better racing.
      7- Monaco isnt going away, love It or hate it, theres way too much money involved.
      8- That is a problem with motorsport in general, always was and will always be. The only way to solve this issue is expanding the ways a driver can get the superlicense, because f2 is the only plausible way to do it and even then its pretty expensive.
      9- Theres like 4 races in the whole season that are in the desert lol and even then, the fans loved Bahrain
      10- He is gone as soon as Haas gets out of financial trouble, so probably 2023 he is gone
