Colin = great voice, so expressive with nuance. Wish he did not get into dispute with lead guitarist who wrote with him, but unable to reconcile now. Idiot lawsuit over "Down Under" flute part. "Men With Two Hearts = superb production. "It's a Mistake"- a poignant anti-war song, one of the best. Include with other war songs by the Kinks: "Some Mother's Son", and "The War Is Over." For those of us growing up during the Vietnam War era, it was horrible. What a waste of human life and expensive! The you know whos liked it, because they got rich.
My take is different than yours. What made Mistake so enjoyable back then and today is its melodic hook, nuanced guitar chord (non-barre chord), and Colin's voice - yes. Many of us don't pay heed to lyrics or political posturing by folks who have no qualification (no skin in the game, no knowledge, etc.) to opine, let alone offer insight (pretentious!).... it is the worst type of pandering and special interest meddling imaginable. Let the music stand on its own two feet - - - listen to the music and try to understand what makes it tick, why it is likeable and let the politics to politicians. Here here.
