- On every big commercial I direct, I start the process by doing "director scouts." I look at all the possible locations with my location manager and then make my choices and present to the agency/client.
A couple of years ago, I started filming little scenes on these scouts using my Blackmagic Pocket cam. I discovered what has now become an integral part of the process for me. I use these sketches to get ideas for scenes and blocking and action for my characters. Especially in a place like West Texas - where so much of the action of the campaign was cowboys doing what they normally do.
This video is just loosely strung together sequences I made while scouting for the Ranch Water commercial. I used a lot of this video to build my storyboards later.
Always interesting to see the sketches now that the final piece is out.

Supremely gorgeous work! I love the ebbs and flows of Texas. Never been but the subtle nuances of the culture seem so timeless
A beautiful representation of a side of Texas most people don't know exists. Can't wait to see whatever comes from this scouting trip fully developed.
it's out! a couple videos back in my feed.
This has so much feeling in it! The handshake makes it feel super personal. Beautiful.
I saw the final project on Pete’s Vimeo account a few weeks back, it’s absolutely gorgeous. You have a fan, thank you for sharing this.
Thank you for watching! Pete is the best. I loved working with him on this one.
hey, it looks like you uploaded an h264 render. i learned the hard way, but youtube favors prores (any format). the h264 compression shows tiling and artifacting. which I'm seeing in the shadows and grainiest parts. hope that helps. great work btw!
Absolutely beautiful.
Thank you Pablo!
This is a really cool window into the choices a director makes. Thanks for sharing. It's interesting to think of what we capture on our own when running and gunning versus what we might capture when we have a cast and crew (and client) waiting on our moves and looking over our shoulder.
truly!
Incredibly beautiful, Ryan - thank you for sharing. Great to see how the initial sketches informed the final piece.
thanks for watching! yes, these sketches were key to the rest of the process.
Beautiful imagery. Thanks for sharing
thanks for watching!
lovely
those eyes at 5:20 could carry a 90-min movie, no doubt. would love to see you do with that guy & west Texas what Chloe did with Brady and the Badlands.
he is incredible. i almost cast him, but he was my horse trainer. needed him coordinating behind the scenes with me.
A gentle reminder to go out and see what you can capture in a couple days, even if you’re not trying to make something cohesive just yet.
my entire mantra. so much to be discovered by doing so.
This is beautiful
thank you!
this is incredible
thank you thomas!
Stunning! Maybe even Stages calls to be shot in this way?
well, yes, perhaps :)
can we please get color grading tutorial, I would pay top dollar!
thank you brandon! i may do it eventually. it will be disappointing though. i just spin dials in various combinations. literally.
@@ryanboothfilmmaker I too would spend good money to see you spin those dials, Ryan! 🙃
Did you shoot all of this handheld ? & did your lens have image stabilization?
lens has stabilization. canon 24-105 f4. but yes, all handheld.
