burnout? plant the seeds...
Просмотров 3,9 тыс.Год назад
it's been a hard year for many of us. WGA / SAG strikes, tons of jobs cancelling, passion projects deferred... in the midst of these "quiet" moments - can we plant the seeds that lead to the next evolution of our work? a video essay of sorts for those of you who either feel stuck on a content hamster wheel or alone as you try and push a rock up the hill on your own.
An end of the year STREET FILM. Blackmagic Pocket 6K Pro and a foggy Brooklyn Bridge.

2022 was a bizarre year in my career. The TV commercial space (where I spend most of my directing energy) was wildly unpredictable this year. Economy rumblings, shifting ad spends, and a new pitch pool made for less time on set than anticipated. But it made space to plant the seeds of my next 2-4 years of work. In the meantime, how do you practice when you're not on set? For me - little BMPCC6K...
West Texas Scouting with the BMPCC6K Pro.
Просмотров 2,1 тыс.2 года назад
On every big commercial I direct, I start the process by doing "director scouts." I look at all the possible locations with my location manager and then make my choices and present to the agency/client. A couple of years ago, I started filming little scenes on these scouts using my Blackmagic Pocket cam. I discovered what has now become an integral part of the process for me. I use these sketch...
A CONVERSATION ABOUT SOUND DESIGN.
Просмотров 1,5 тыс.2 года назад
"An audience will forgive bad picture before they forgive bad sound" or some version of this is a *critical* lesson to learn as filmmakers. But what if we push further? What emotional or tonal beats can be unlocked if we keep pushing our sound as much as we try and push our visuals. This is a conversation centered around a couple of moments from the recent RANCH WATER director's cut.
LONE RIVER x RANCH WATER - "FOLLOW IT WEST" feat. RYAN BINGHAM
Просмотров 3,7 тыс.2 года назад
My most recent director's cut of an ad campaign that ran during the latest season of Yellowstone. Featuring Ryan Bingham and shot out in West Texas with working big ranch cowboys. This work is representative of the kind of project I do as my "day job." It's an incredible filmmaking training ground and I love the relationships, techniques, and experiences that I gain from this kind of work. This...
FINDING YOUR "VOICE" AS A FILMMAKER OR PHOTOGRAPHER.
Просмотров 2,6 тыс.2 года назад
I know it sounds like a truism, but there is nothing more important than "finding your voice." In other words - if you were to make something and NOT have your name attached, would an audience be able to tell that you made it? This is the goal for any of us working in a visual medium. On a workshop in Siem Reap, Cambodia nearly 15 years ago, I was given a piece of advice that set the course for...

I've headed down to Chinatown in Manhattan every year for Lunar New Year. It's always an incredible celebration to be a part of. Even in 2020 as the pandemic was kicking off, I still managed to make it down and wander around. But this year? I missed 99% of it. I was on calls and had a treatment due. When an hour opened up in the late afternoon, I grabbed my camera and quickly rode my bike acros...
SONDER: Street Photography in Motion // A filmmaker's guide to practicing empathy.
Просмотров 4,5 тыс.3 года назад
In John Koenig's "Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows", he describes the sudden realization that each random passerby is living a life as vivid and complex as your own as SONDER. This is a film about how the act of *filming* on the street can increase our empathy and sonder muscles and ultimately make us better filmmakers. I don't know how this channel will continue to develop, but I do know that I w...
Street Photography in Practice (a self-assigment with the Fuji XE4)

Between directing commercials, I will often use street photography as a way to create and get better at visual storytelling. I pick 1 camera, go to 1 location, and photograph for 1 hour. This film is an exploration of this process using a recent session in lower Manhattan.

[from lunar new year, 2019] I'd been gone for three weeks on a wild commercial and it happened that the day I got back was both the lunar new year and a school holiday. I stumbled on the parades and firecracker celebrations last year purely by chance and so we took the girls down this year. It was a special moment. So many kids running and playing, families together, a general air of celebratio...

I just came back to revisit this to link to a friend, why didn't you pursue youtube Ryan? Your numbers should be so much higher for the value that you put out into this space, unfortunately people don't know what they are missing.

rewatching for inspiration on sound design. love the storytelling approach to how a scene feels with the sounds. those two edits really pulled the final edit together.

In order to reap, we must sow. And it sure seems like life has a lot more sowing than reaping 😅 Thanks for sharing this Ryan, sometimes it feels like throwing spaghetti at the wall till something sticks, which has felt like my past year, so I must say I can I relate. And I appreciate you sharing these words of encouragement. It's comforting to know other filmmakers are going through the same thing. Wishing you all the best!

Good word for any career path. I have a friend who shared this - and I'm in a TOTALLY different career (steel industry/procurement/management). But this hit home for me and some stuff I've been honestly a bit frustrated with lately - but there's beauty in struggle too. Instead of sitting and being ticked off on circumstances, build where you can. Plant those seeds. Growth will come and you'll be grateful down the line that you dug in to the dirt to harvest something amazing later.

Thanks a lot Ryan! You make a great habit of constantly planting the seeds, and I believe a good part of it comes from genuinely enjoying the process. The toughest parts come from looking for, or expecting, sprouts. "Look at the rain" and create more mental space, as that's what leads to growth. Thanks a lot for sharing.
