in the midst of these "quiet" moments - can we plant the seeds that lead to the next evolution of our work?

Thanks a lot Ryan! You make a great habit of constantly planting the seeds, and I believe a good part of it comes from genuinely enjoying the process. The toughest parts come from looking for, or expecting, sprouts. "Look at the rain" and create more mental space, as that's what leads to growth. Thanks a lot for sharing.

I feel Artist a like are all needing this video. In a world or growing algorithms, “just listen to the rain” come back down from the brain fog and get back to just life, the present, then be able to fully digest the work we put in. LOVED this brotha!!

Good word for any career path. I have a friend who shared this - and I'm in a TOTALLY different career (steel industry/procurement/management). But this hit home for me and some stuff I've been honestly a bit frustrated with lately - but there's beauty in struggle too. Instead of sitting and being ticked off on circumstances, build where you can. Plant those seeds. Growth will come and you'll be grateful down the line that you dug in to the dirt to harvest something amazing later.

Good word. I’ve been planting seeds off and on for a couple decades, and am just now starting to see some real fruit. Many life obstacles and detours along the way. I don’t always feel like I’ve made any progress, but having a signed contract with a dream client tells me otherwise (my first “big boy” job). Now, I’m wanting to plant some different seeds when I haven’t even mastered the previous ones. Narrative is daunting when all my filmmaking friends are in different states or countries and I feel like I’m on my own. But still I will plant. Thanks for sharing.

Hey Ryan, im a 27 year old filmmaker who wants to direct and shoot features, and in the meantime I make music videos, short films, and other various things on my youtube channel since finishing film school. Back in film school, your 2016 reel really inspired me and matched the visual aesthetics I was going for in my own work in so many ways. I wound up loving "Ten Days" and "5 Star" a ton, and I really really love your Vince Staples, and Billie Eilish unreleased exclusives you have on your vimeo. The thing you did for the revenant was awesome too. Back in 2016 I was also at NAB and I believe you were speaking there but I had to leave the day before you spoke. In any case, just wanted to say the last 7 years or so your work has been something ive really loved quietly watching and cheering along for in the background. The algorithm just recommended me this video and I wasnt even subscribed to you yet, so Im glad these years of metadata of watching your stuff brought me to this thoughtful video.

Wow! Thanks, Ryan this comes just in perfect timing. I'm at a point where nothing seems to progress, finding it hard to make a living out of this and at the same time trying to build something meaningful with likeminded people, so it's been hard to find mental stability while having to focus on needs rather than passion, but I guess sometimes we have to stop and humble ourselves. Once again thanks for your words.
we all have to pay the bills. and that's ok! it's noble, necessary, part of the process. but we have to fight to make space too. plant the seeds between the gigs.

Just this week I had my first “I might need a break” moment in years. Getting hit with existential questions like “am I in the right place?” or “is this sustainable?” right in the middle of productions getting more complicated by the minute and putting out little fires left and right. So while things may not be slow, they’re definitely a cause for reflection. Thanks for the reminder to actually take that time :)

I feel it.
I'm in the documentary world and it's been pretty much dead since the end of 2022. Lots of projects were canceled and networks are not ordering anything at the moment. I think the interest rates contributed more than strikes for commercials and docs.
I hope it's temporary.
completely agree. debt financing doesn't work in the same way anymore, that's for sure.

Fuck the algo 😅 While im not on a level where writers strike matters, the UK has been quite slow in the corporate / branded content world too. So many cam ops have had a very slow year this year.
