@@JassoJaarki but did the real Herb Brooks really do this post game bag skate after tying Norway 3-3? And didn’t someone yell their name and that they play for USA

I think being only 3 years after 9/11 we were all feeling desperately patriotic. Even without that added sentiment, this scene would still have given me shivers down the spine.
Watching my wife become an American was probably the best day of my life so far. I watched her work her ass off for this; blood, sweat and tears. That’s what built this country!
I have the good fortune of being born Canadian, but raised and playing hockey in the U.S,, I've played for many teams in my home state of Michigan and played against many future stars like Modano,LaFontaine, Jimmy Carson and of course played with the Millers'. But most of my off-season training was in Canada! and on my home reservation on Manitoulin Island .Also playing in my Native American tournament in Canada, called "the Little NHL", where i faced many teams of my heritage and all Canadian
It’s amazing… I had no idea until last year that Mike Eruzione is the first cousin of one of my dad’s in-laws. As a Boston girl, I am so proud of Mike.. He works at BU now coaching I think!
Herb Brooks was a savage coach, but he really understood their enemy and what was needed to get the U.S. team into the right physical shape, mental shape, and even spiritual shape to stand toe-to-toe and beat them. The Soviets played like a unit, they had years of dominance, implicit trust and they played for the glory of the U.S.S.R. The U.S. team had less time, mostly strangers, but a coach who knew how to take that team and forge them into champions. They _were_ born for this, as was their coach! Brooks was the only guy who had the right plan!
I always got emotional at Ruzzo's comments when this movie came out. Now , I seem to bawl my eyes out even more. Back when being proud to be an American was accepted by other Americans.
Eruzione finally got what the coach was asking. Amazing they probably could have stopped sooner if they just would have answered the 2 things he wanted them to remember
I was 9 years old when this game was played.... I guess that makes me a real OG lol! It still brings tears to my eyes and chills down my spine thinking about watching this game and the pride everybody felt from beating the Soviets!
"You're looking for players whose name on the front of the sweater is more important than the one on the back. I look for these players to play hard, to play smart and to represent their country" -Herb Brooks-
Its well documented in interviews...... Brooks drilled them until he was done yelling (about midnight). Rizzo's epic line didn't happen and didn't stop the beat down. But basically everything else in this scene was spot on. They also rematched Norway the next night and won 9-0.
Whether it happened or not exactly like this scene the 1980 US Olympic Hockey team took advantage of superior fitness and conditioning. They came from behind in almost every one of their games, including the semi-final and gold medal games.
Modern day athletes, specially NFL players, need to watch this video, again, again, and again! Get that through their heads! Who do they play for? THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA!!!
This is exactly what I was thinking. "When you pull on that jersey, you represent yourself and your teammates, and the name on the front is a HELL of a lot more important than the one on the back. GET THAT THROUGH YOUR HEAD!"
Earlier in the movie when these guys got together for camp he asked the same question. Every one of them said what school they played for. He wanted them to say they play for the USA. It was about THIS team. Not where they came from.
What made this scene so great was the following scene when they are working together to get the plane back. Playing cards. Then herb sees the nhl all stars get trampled by the soviets.
1) 40,000 views :) 2) weird fact i learned today about this moment. It wasn't Eruzione saying "I play for the United States of America" it was Mark Johnson smashing his stick against the glass in frustration at the drills. 3. You should read "Herb Brooks: The inside story to a hockey mastermind" it's a great book!
Canada did not beat the Soviets in Olympic competition, which is what this conversation was about. Of course the USSR had to lose some games in international Hockey because no one can go completely unbeaten without a loss. The Philadelphia Flyers also beat the USSR in 1976, the same year the Soviets took their fourth consecutive gold medal. The point is that in Olympic competition no one had beaten the Soviets since the USA did it in 1960, until the USA did it again in 1980.
You're the type of dbag who likes going into children's cancer wards in hospitals telling them Santa Claus doesn't exist and tell yourself as security escort you out that you did a good thing by telling the truth
The coolest thing isn’t the scene itself. The coolest thing is seeing the comment section below. Sometimes we think the United States is on life support given all the negative rhetoric our media put out. But we’re not. Even on liberal RUclips America is bathing in love. Just look at the comments.
The USSR were already the defending gold medalists in 1960 when the USA beat them at the Olympics in Squaw Valley. That Soviet team was essentially the same team that would have its dynasty from 1964 to 1976, they just hasn't acquired the reputation yet. So the USA was the first to beat them before Canada.
The 72 summit series gave Canadian's a reason to start waving their flags. Canadian are always seen as nice letting other people out shine us. The 72 summit series and the 2010 Olympics gave Canadian a reason to show the world that they want to win. The USA has thousands of stories like this. The very few stories for Canadian's where a person can see Canada come together and say no Canada is the best Country in the world.
1960 the Soviets had not yet won four straight Olympic gold medals the way they did in the late 60's and early 70's. The USSR did not begin competing in international hockey until 1954. The 1980 Olympic game was called the "Miracle On Ice" because the Soviet team was considered unbeatable at that time, having suffered their last real defeat at that hands of the Philadelphia Flyers in 1976. When the USA beat Canada and Russia in 1960 the Soviets had only won one gold medal in 1956 at that time.
Urg I don't get this question I have to answer!! Some one please help me!! The answer needs to be 4 sentences After the exhibition game near the beginning of the movie ends in a tie game. Herb Brooks has his team skate conditioning drills late into the night, ending them only after he is satisfied they realize who it is they play for. Why does this work with this level of athletes? Could it have back fired?
I didn't say the 1960 Olympics weren't important, because the Soviet team that the USA beat that year went on to win gold in 1964, 1968, 1972, and 1976. 1956 was simply the first year the Soviets won gold, and they hadn't yet established their reputation as the best team in the world. So USA still beat them first, and then came in second behind the Soviets at the '72 Olympics where Canada did not medal. Canada pulled out a narrow victory over the USSR at the Summit Series in '72.
Not defending Canada, but in regards to another post Canada didn't send its best players to the Olympics around this time. This truly was a Miracle of a win for the USA. Great movie, great memory.
Too bad this didnt happen in the real story. The thing that made Herb Brooks call this off was whe Mark Johnson smashed his stick in to the boards in frustration.
