    Do you have Shimano's Bluetooth unit installed on your bike? What's your favourite feature? Let us know in the comments below!

    • @Ed.R
      @Ed.R 3 года назад +2

      No but got bluetooth on my homemade automatic shifting system. Means I can program it to have any features I want.
      A fun one is putting it in manual and making the bike shift from a distance using a phone.
      Just because I could I also have the rear light controlled by bluetooth.
      The most useful feature apart from changing settings is data logging for performance optimisation.

      I want the bluetooth unit, but it means I have to also upgrade my battery too.
      Ideally I'd upgrade my shifters and move the junction box to a bar-end one.

      BetterShifting is a Di2 site, so yes ;-). The Wireless Unit EW-WU111 / EW-WU101 is a nice to have, but not essential if you ask me. Still... I mainly use it to quickly see my current gear, look at gear stats and view the battery level on my Wahoo.

    I installed my D-Fly inside the handlebars by the junction box. Heard mixed reviews about bluetooth connection having issues keeping a consistent signal to the head unit when placed inside the seat tube. Also was concerned about potential rattle. Handlebars is the way to go Alex. A bit more work but well worth it. EDIT: Also, people, please update your components using a proper wired connection to a PC or laptop computer. Pretty sure even Shimano discourages folks from performing updates using the D-Fly and a wireless connection. Like mentioned in the clip, good way to brick the bike.

    • @grimp53
      @grimp53 3 года назад +1

      Also: prior to performing the Di2 update with the charging/junction box plugged into a USB socket make sure to unplug any unneeded USB devices from the PC (joystick, printer, scanner, ...) as they may interfere with e-tube. I ended up with a dead left shifter when it failed to update the firmware.

  • @GMoneyLove
    @GMoneyLove 3 года назад +10

    E-Tube software has come so far in the last year or two. It was easy to brick things because the connection and software would regularly disconnect from each other. I stopped using the phone app and stuck to connecting up a laptop because of some bad experiences. I gave it a go again recently and was very pleasantly surprised. So if you've had the same experience as I, give it another go! (PS- I found that even when the app dropped the connection to WU111 unit during a firmware update that if I was patient and worked me back the update would pick up and continue w/o bricking the whole thing.)

    Think its ridiculous that Shimano don't include a wireless bluetooth module inbuilt within system. £75 for something that competitors like sram include is a bit much for a bit of plastic and a chip. Dear GCN - These are no hacks, all of this is just basic Di2 stuff. And only about half of its functionality. Theres a bunch of stuff U missed/didnt mention. (turning on/off/pausing rides, timing laps, turning on/off lights, quick shifting by 2-3 cogs or whole range, changing shifting speed, adjusting derauliers etc )
    U failed to mention that most of this stuff is only available on new Di2 groupsets (such as BT connection module, buttons on top of hoods...) and the older ones need a significant upgrade for most of the newer stuff to work.
    Also when upgrading firmware, always upgrade only one component at a time as if doing many at once it often fails and system restart is needed if this happens (disconnect battery for about a minute).

    I'm installing Ultegra Di2 on a bike. I am installing a Shimano chain using Shimano length method. Before I cut the chain I double checked the big/big small/small combinations and I wound up with a very loose chain in the small/small combo. If I was to shorten the chain juuuust enough to give it tension, that makes the chain way too tight in the big/big combo. The fix for this would to simply not use the smallest cog in the back when on the small chainring. Apparently you can't customize the Ultegra Di2 to do this. I did some research and found this statement: "Note that Gear Position Control is not enabled on 12-speed Ultegra/105 derailleurs. If you're on 12-speed Ultegra/105, you can shift into the smallest cassette cogs when you're in the small ring. There is no way to change this setting." Any input on this would be greatly appreciated!

    Updating the firmware via BLE connection is fraught with danger: It will hang up on random occasions and in the worst case scenario brick the component you are trying to update the firmware of. The only safe (and reasonably convenient) method is to use your charger via the charge port to run the E Tube software from a Windows machine (no other OS is supported), or if you're a tech nerd, get the SME02 module for component-by-component diagnosis and repair via a Windows machine.
