Hey Pierre, Suzi here… I know this video is from two years ago but I had to rewatch it because tonight is the first time I’m going to try and shoot fireworks. From all places, my front yard. I’ll try and get a dog in the shot since there is no interesting landscape around here. Happy Independence Day 2020!!
Pierre, I used your recommended camera settings and tips to shoot fireworks with my Sony a6000 and 55mm to 210mm lens. I used 5sec. to 7 sec. exposures. The shots turned out wonderful! I could hardly believe they were that good. That you very much for your tutorial Pierre! Great stuff.
With all those people walking around in the dark at the fireworks, YES, put your camera on the ground is a great idea! he-he ha-ha ho-ho, just sit back and watch your camera go.
Thanks, very good helpful tips. What about video? Do you have a recipe? Taking photo is quite easy and we can see the results instantly but in video, one chance only.
Merci !
If you just smash the shutter button, chances are that you introduce camera shake. If you use a timer, it's extremely difficult to predict when the action is going to happen, and time it precisely. One technique is to set a long shutter speed, and cover the lens with a black card. When you notice some action, remove the cardboard, then put it back a few seconds later. This way you can superimpose multiple bursts in the same shot. Removing the black card is quick enough, and it shouldn't shake the camera. So having no professional cable release is no excuse, either. Everyone can get a cheap black card from a craft shop.
Good recap of fireworks tips, Pierre, but not exactly “secret” considering how many posts have long covered, and continue to cover, this subject and all you touched on. Still, repetition reinforces. Also, very important - turn off: 1. Built-in flash/flash mode, 2. Auto-focus (use manual and pre-focus at infinity as you replied to a comment below), 3. Image stabilization, and 4. Long exposure noise reduction (in many cameras). Of secondary importance is to shoot most pics at show start if you want to minimize the accumulating smoke/haze. Some consumer oriented cameras, as you know, include a specific fireworks scene mode that may not take into account all these technical safeguards. Bonus - frame scene to anticipate and capture topmost bursts, and get creative w/zoom during exposure.
Hey Paul!!! GREAT add on! The 4. You mention is definitely something that can get people confused as it usually freezes the camera for a while...! Thanks for sharing man :)
All of these tips are extremely valid. Tripod = not absolutely required. (be a rock!) Manual mode is extremely useful. However i would suggest (if using a rock/tripod) to shoot in bulb mode with a remote trigger. (Careful with wireless triggers, other people might use them too and might interfere with yours, physical trigger might be best if its crowded) Bulb mode = you control the shutter length, so can make the shutter as long as you want or as short as you want. Be prepared for rain! BTW Canada Day is a thing too... go to Canada on July 1st for some fireworks practice before the 4th of July! (hah, next year!) For me I wound up using Iso 64 (D850) F8-F11 24-70mm lens between 44mm and 70mm i focused on the first firework as it went off, and left lens on that spot most of the rest of the night, some adjustment from time to time. In 20 minutes wound up with 178 photos to mess around with on bulb mode. Oh and i used Matrix metering / full scene meter, not spot.
Heya! Awesome thanks for sharing! Yeah remote + bulb is great. I have the tendency to think as little as possible so I leave it in preset times. Otherwise I have to watch the time or count :p Timelapse mode works well too!! Good point for Canada!!! Damn I missed it :-0 Have a great day man!
Bubba da Hut Good point about bulb mode and potential interference w/same. Some folks opt to keep bulb mode active and place/remove black cardboard in front of, but not touching the lens.
Because of this I'm actually probably gonna give it a shot when the fireworks go off in Switzerland on the 1st of August haha. Once again, good video! Enjoyed watching it :)
I liked the way you keep jumping, bouncing and running around between scenes hhahahaaa you have so much energies man. Anyway, just landed here in NYE coz I'm an insta follower and...a RUclips subscriber from now on. Keep up that good quality content, I'm enjoying it so far
Just found your channel, landed on the night photography vid. me and my hubby were having a date night and trying some night photos for the first time. awesome vids, love your editing. you will have over a million subs one day!
Hey Jess!! Thanks a lot! Glad it helped! Welcome to the adventures! When I have a million come say hi I'll remember you and your hubby! ps: new video is live now! Enjoy!! :) ruclips.net/video/cNlSfOxyz34/видео.html
You're welcome! I'll be in France starting on July 21. I'll be in Agen for a week for a conference and plan on visiting Paris for a day before going to Spain. It will be my first time in France. J'ai besoin de pratiquer mon français.
Et bien !! Ta chaîne a explosé ! Dommage que je n’étais pas dispo sur paris il y a quelques mois car ça aurait été un plaisir de partager avec un passionné !!
Excellent Fotografo Pierre… I am interesting the Differnet perspective that proposes that it is not only an armour fires if the one in composition … greetings.. From Mineral de Pozos Guanjuato Mexico.Thank you
Hey Rich! It's a camera holder. I put the camera there all the time :) better for me than having it hanging on the strap. Here's the one I use amzn.to/2KHNuod - might be knock off brands available too...
Merci Pierre bon video, but I have to shoot fireworks in a suburban area and not a city. How do you focus on sky in auto focus when you have no talk building's to focus on at night. Au revoir. Lee.
Hey Seb!! Oops! En effet... Juste avant que ça explose et deux methodes: en devinant quand ca va partir ou se metter en mode timelapse (intervalometre) comme ça pas besoin de rappuyer à chaque fois

Hey Emma! Glad to hear! Good luck 🍀👍
Use bulb mode + long exposure, use a black card to block some of the time.
Merci !
I am going to try this but with rear curtain flash to make a portrait maybe...
