I'm an old man now, have lived here in Ottawa ever since I married a Canadian girl thirty years ago and retired from the military. Winters are hard and I love the cold winters and the hot summers. Keeps the insects down. Keeps the alligators away too. When I miss Texas too much it is only a short flight away. I love it here.
Except for the military part, I did what you did exactly in reverse 20 years ago. I used to love Ottawa back in the 90s and earlier, but from what I see of Ottawa now, I think Texas suits me better.
Spent 5 years in Montreal and then 25 year in Ottawa after immigrating to Canada. Finally we moved to the west coast for the retirement. Ottawa has a tough winter but it’s a great place for the kids to grow up. I miss those friendly people, nice sunny winter days after big snow storms. Lol
I'm an Ottawa native. The "downtown" you present is where all the government buildings are. Not many live around there, so you can't expect it to be lively. Places such as the Byward market are much livelier, and can be quite packed on Weekends.
And if your lucky you won't get stabbed. More like dangerous. A cop once told me to NEVER go to the market because of the crime. For the record I absolutely LOVED Ottawa but the ones in charge ruined it. Oh ya let's not forget how they built a rink in Kanata and not the Flats because the NCC, joke, wouldn't allow it. Everything that can go wrong in Ottawa does...
@@lapoose325 As an Ottawa native (even born here) I have to agree, it sucks. Sure, the nature and food are great, but everything else is irritating. People end up being so fake, even false-flagging and attacking people who try to assist them, and even going against the overly helpful Trucker Convoy, or simply being hypocritical on a daily basis. Again, the scenery is great, it's the people and how much they self-sabotage that ruins everything in the city. Everything great is in every other city other than Ottawa. The government also does the suck ruining everything more and more each year. Having been to both Europe and Japan I genuinely admire those places better. If I could live in Japan, I would. Everything (other than work) seems so much better in both places. Granted, you can get jailed for Twitter posts in UK and Italy, and maybe other EU nations. Ottawa needs to grow up in the Vancouver way, not the Toronto way.
If youre watching this, and heard him mention people go to Halifax to look for more affordable housing PLEASE DON'T, things in Halifax are insane, rent prices getting closer and closer to Toronto prices, houses tripled their price, there are not enough places to rent for everyone which makes the prices skyrocket, on top of that, the government restrictions that were preventing landlords to raise their prices were gone in Dec 2023, things are going to get much worse now in 2024... There are already people living in tents in downtown because they can't afford rent, imagine how much worse this will get... Halifax was a nice and affordable place 5 years ago, it is ridiculously expensive, without offering jobs, healthcare, transportation, etc etc etc, do not come to this city.
Your remarks about the temperature: it’s now 2024. The last 3 winters have been mainly warm, with the real cold hitting between Jan-Feb. We just received a blast of snow Jan.2024. We had a green December. It all warms up in March. Therefore, recent winters last from Jan-mid-April.

Ottawa is actually pretty nice A good balance of a small town and big city I wouldn't want to live in Toronto though, grew up there when I was younger and it was chaos and unaffordable. Nice place to visit though
I miss Ottawa. Currently I am living as an Expat in the Philippines. Everything in Canada is way too expensive, the winters are long, and the woke liberals are just too much… so I made the move. And at first leaving Canada (or escaping however you want to look at it) was a dream come true. But after a year I really started to get homesick. And I especially miss Ottawa. Ottawa is a city surrounded by nature (unlike Toronto where I grew up), and there’s so much to explore there not just as a tourist but also as a local. Compared to Toronto the traffic isn’t bad, and getting downtown is not a stressful adventure. There’s pros and cons but I think as Canadians we tend to take things for granted and only focus on the cons. And with that being said I’m planning my return to Ottawa with a different mindset/perspective and will appreciate it much more than I did before.
I completely agree. I moved from Ottawa to Montréal in 2022 and I saw that Ottawa is the best place to live so in August 2024 I moved back in Ottawa. Our health system is alot better than Québec, the rent laws are alot better in Ottawa, we pay less taxes in Ontario than Québec etc.
I was born and grew up in Ottawa ,,, I always had things to do , somewhere to go , and a lot of clubs and bars , and night-dancing's either in Ottawa or Aylmer ,Hull,, Gatineay ,,etc, like I said there is always somewhere to go , even skating , or excursions , cabin a sucre and hay rides ,, like I said ,, just check out your local papers or website for activities to do in Ottawa ,, even though it is cold during winter , just wear two layers of clothing , protect yourself and keep warm , and in the summer , heaps to do ,, camping or more places to hang out to ,, just check around and ask around ,, even though I've been away from Ottawa for a long time , I'm sure there is still heaps to do ,, it's not just about Government workers ,, there is a lot more than you see ,, anyway ,, Canada is big ,, and it's your choice what you want to do with your time , hang out indoors or hangout outdoors ,, just check it out ,,
I live in Ottawa as a student and I came from Vancouver during covid. My view on Ottawa and the activities you mention are that these things or similar alternatives all exist in other cities where they're often better, or they're too far to do feasibly without a car. I try to replicate activities that I did as a teen in Vancouver often, like biking everywhere, hiking with friends, exploring random corners of the city, enjoying downtown as best I can, and much more. What I can say is the city is too small or inaccessible to enjoy many of these as they get repetitive very quickly. I should also mention that any of the "swimming" locations that aren't an hour or more away by car are almost hazardous. Many of my native friends have had rashes or other nasty things. The 6 month winter really takes the life away in a horrible way too - I didn't understand seasonal depression until my first full winter there. My hopes were that after covid, some life would turn up which it has a little but still not very much. To top it all off, not having a car in this city is a nightmare, I can be on public transport for hours sometimes just to hang out with my friends. You might ask why I even live there, and the answer to that is a specific program not offered in many places in Canada that I have sunk so much time into it just makes sense to finish my degree at this point, after which I plan on leaving the city and hopefully Ontario as a whole. Thankfully I have friends I can make the best of my time with for now.
I m from Brazil. I look forward on going to Ottawa as my best canadian friend lives there, and I d like to have an experience of living abroad again. I know that the extreme cold and the big snow falls can be tough on the long canadian winter, and I m not used to it, but I still think it can be a good experience. The high cost of the real estate there is also another issue, but lets see how it goes. If I dont make it, I can come back here. Living here in Brazil is ok for me, but there are times that we are willing to try something different. I look forward on going to Ottawa next year. I wont say moving because I m still not sure if I ll move there permanently
It will be a great experience to visit Ottawa! Be sure to watch our other video about all the things we love about Ottawa - it has some suggestions for things you must see. ruclips.net/video/K3iZ2Js1VDk/видео.htmlsi=o1_Zx2MHTUtputkB
I grew up in Ottawa and lived in several cities around the world… Montreal, Paris, Edinburgh, Bangkok, Hanoi… I miss it dearly. The quality of life is the best I’ve experienced so far. Great summer city. No restaurant closes at 6pm and are closed on weekends. That was my line of business and Ottawa restaurants do extremely well. Packed on weekends. So, that was completely inappropriate to say this.
As somebody who thinks that Ottawa looks like a nice place to live, I like hearing the views of somebody who would advise against it. I still think that it might be worth considering, as I've never gotten along well with hot weather. It's also good to hear a local perspective on what the public transit is like.
In 2010, I moved from Sudbury to Ottawa and then in 2022 I decided to move in Montreal and now here I am in 2024 back in Ottawa because by my experience it is the best place to live & easier to find a family physician etc. The OC Transpo system is not better than Toronto and Montreal but some times you have to chose what is the most important thing like jobs, health, housing or bus
You missed Ottawa's biggest negative, which is that it is an intensely car-centred city, with devastating impact especially on the more suburban areas. Acres of parking lots are a cancer on wide areas of the city. The biggest reasons for the problems with public transport, which you justly include here, is that successive mayors and city councils have pandered to the car-driving public and have failed to develop public transport and walkability outside of the Glebe and a very few other central areas.
You also have to be realistic most people prefer to own a car. And have total freedom of movement, total schedule control, total comfort and total privacy I used to use metro system and bus system here at montreal from 18-23 But by 24 once i had my own car and driver liscence. I could not get myself back using bus/metro 😂 With my car i am not limited to bus/metro schedule. To their specific road. Some areas are not well served. If you want to travel out of the city you gonna need a car. And love total privacy. And i am guaranteed to have a seat in my car. While you can forget about that with bus/metro during highly active hours Also canada is way too cold and too humid high heat during late june july august. And too boring and repetitive to be a fun country to walk outside and use public transport on a regular basis 😆 i am sorry but i am not gonna go use bus and metro at -10 degree celcius to go drink a tim hortons coffee while looking at ottawa parlement. We dont have a good weather and we dont have the most exciting cities. We dont have something like Miami or Barcelona here 😆
@@mathewvanostin7118 It’s also worth noting that you have a completely different perspective if you live somewhere with reliable transit that comes every few minutes or less and is reliable, and is faster than travelling by car. It’s all about cities giving people options. No one’s going to use transit if it sucks, and no one will walk the sidewalks or bike if it’s dangerous… which is the case in most North American cities unfortunately…
@@ChrisTheAppleOne montreal transport system is very good. During highly active hours. Bus wait time is 5-10 minutes. Metro wait time is 2-5 minutes. During low busy hours, wait time is 20-30 minutes. Metro wait time is 8-10 minutes Sidewalk in montreal are very safe. Lot of people even walk on sidewalk very late at night. And everyone feel safe. Even small height women feel safe The reason i got a car had nothing to do with montreal transport quality and sidewalk safety. Its just cars beat metro/bus/walking for reasons explained in my earlier comment Especialy in a bad uncomfortable weather country or a boring repetitive country that dont motivate people to roam a lot outside like our dear canada lol
It's especially annoying because the drivers here are seriously dangerous.. I've been hit by cars on sidewalks TWICE in Ottawa... and then you get to wait for 12+ hours in the ER after they forget about you. Ottawa is a large town that morphed into a city long before it could handle the increase in population-- and it shows.
Ottawa’s beautiful and a great place to live. It’s very active and I always found it had a substantial night life. I was born on the Quebec side but lived in Ottawa for 30 years. I moved for my exes work and I’ve missed it ever since.
I've lived and worked in Ottawa for 35 years, so here are some rebuttals. According to the 2016 Census, 20.1 per cent of the employed labour force in Ottawa-Gatineau work in the Public Administration sector. Tech is burgeoning but I was delighted and privileged to learn French as an Adult. Ottawa ranks a mere 7th as coldest capital, ditto for snow load. Ottawa is a family town, so go to Montreal for nightlife, as you suggested. Cost of living, including accommodations is better than most Canadian Capitals. If you want Victoria or Vancouver, remember the earthquake risk. Sorry to say, you could come across as a bit of a whiner. Suck it up and munch on a beavertail!
We haven’t decided yet. Over the next few years we will be checking out many cities in Canada, the US and elsewhere and making videos about the pros and cons. Eventually we will pick our favorite! Ottawa is actually a great place if you love four seasons. I hope also watched our other video about Ottawa ruclips.net/video/K3iZ2Js1VDk/видео.html
I doubt you will find a perfect place since you seems mofe inclne to look at negative aspects. I traveled a lot and all cities visited have their good and bad sides. Better to question yourself on who you are to better find out what enjoyed you the most and then accept the bad sides of the place chosen because perfect place does not exist...
Yeah, as an Ottawa resident, when you mentioned how a bus will just drive on by, and they only run every 30+ minutes, coupled with the winter, well you get the idea. It can suck!
Public transportation is the worst in Ottawa, its not functional at all. You're looking at 2hour or more to get anywhere. I grew up in Montreal and Public transportation is seamless.
In 2010, I had moved to Ottawa from Sudbury then in 2022 I moved from Ottawa to Montreal and now 2024 I am back in Ottawa, ontario because it is the best place to live in Canada and more affordable and less crimes than the rest of Canada. And because Ottawa is the capital of Canada there is alot more financial help than the rest of Canada. Easier at finding a family doctor.
We are traveling the world looking for the best place to live. This week we are in Pittsburgh. We plan to take a couple years to make our decision and will make videos as we continue our search.

@@ShouldWeLiveHere I traveled the world and lived in 11 countries. The best country to live in is Portugal. I love Malta too. But Canada is not definitely a country worth to live in. Expensive and boring.
The most backward city in Canada...transit sucks...road conditions suck...people are entitled and mostly brain dead...government workers that think they own everything....the crime is worse every day....I work there but get out every day thankfully....I don't mind the commute...it's a pleasure to leave every day.
the five points should be true! However Ottawa is safe, clean, peaceful, a centre of 2 provinces and has great future, because no one capital won't develop.will see that$$$
Ottawa isn't bad actually. I live here and i don't think it's horrible, but i definitely don't think it's great either. The video's pretty accurate and i think it's well-done.
1. Not many presentations are given in both languages, only from government officials, companies I work for everybody speaks English all the time. No problem there, it's only a problem if you want a government position or working in service industries. And to learn a language you need to actually try, there are many people that live in Canada for years but can't speak English still because they only hang with people that speak the same language. 2. Thanks to global warming least year the rideau canal didn't even open for skating, but I agree thought it might not be for everyone, I am from Taiwan, so I had my fair share of hot days, I actually enjoy the snow. 3. Yeah public transit can use alot of work, but on the bright side it was ranked the best city to drive in in Canada, so I just drive. 4. That place with rental sign I actually used to live in that area. My wife and I bought a place in 2022, yeah so expensive, but Calgary is much colder fyi, and Halifax doesn't have many jobs available in my field, Toronto and Vancouver are much more expensive so don't get me started, I lived in Toronto for a year when my wife and I are dating because she lived there, and looked at the housing prices seriously, only rich Rs people get to live in detached homes or even a decent sized townhome. 5. We must have very different favourite restaurants, my favourite restaurants are always open on weekends, and at least until 10pm, one opens at 11:30am that is the latest opening time of all the restaurants I go to.
I lived briefly in the Soo. Moved there in July and the weather was great. By mid-August it felt cold and damp almost all the time. Also found it hard to breathe after a couple weeks with the pollution of the steel mill. Locals seemed used to both. I did not stay long, largely due to the breathing issues, which cleared up almost immediately after we got past Sudbury. Moved back to Southern Ontario by October and the weather here was so much warmer!
I have lived in Montreal it snows a lot in Montreal as well I think I can get usto Ottawa snow 😅. There’s all ways something to do in Ottawa clubs bars you. You name it
I have lived in all major cities in canada. Trust me, most major cities are same. Its upto to put the effort if you want job, friend, relationship, etc. Ottawa is not more or less, i think its even better than toronto or montreal cause its not full of immigrants like toronto and not totally french like montreal.
Yes it has some issues. I have come to live there because my parents live there and now I am kind of stuck with a little condo that I had to do weird things to make work I don't want to explain to buyers. What is really scary about the LRT is if it is a Ottawa taxpayer burden and it just keeps messing up worse, someone is going to have to say shut that stupid thing off we can't pay for this nonsense.
I'm gonna be staying there for over a year and taking a course in Ottawa I do have a job lined for me there but I do plan on looking into a smaller location soon once my course is done. I'm leaving BC due to how expensive and unfordable it has become.
Ottawa is definitely more affordable than most places in BC. Be sure to watch our other video about the things we love about Ottawa. A year will give you a chance to see what you think of winter and to attend all of the festivals and visit the museums. 😁
I only speak english and I am a total minimum wage pleb. If you're not bilingual and in the gov't it's a very very difficult place for a young man to make a living.
I am an Ottawa native. What you are saying is true but you are only stating the negative aspects of Ottawa. Ottawa is a great place to live and very safe. Ottawa is not for everyone, especially for some foreigners. If you want cheaper houses, cross the bridge in Hull/Gatineau (10 minute drive) and you can get much cheaper housing. Ottawa may appeal more to older people.
Canada is welcoming a record number of immigrants. The largest number are moving from India The targets are an additional 485,000 new permanent residents in 2024 and 500,000 new permanent residents in 2025. With a population of 40 million that is a noticeable change!
Ottawa native here, There's a reason why Ottawa is called "The city that fun forgot". There's more culture in a bowl of yogurt. I would never move back.
@@ShouldWeLiveHere Well, in the world I like London, England the best. I tolerate living in Toronto despite it being unjustly expensive. At least there's stuff to do here. Certainly not a world class city it boasts on being lol

@@ShouldWeLiveHere probably the more expensive ones but I saw many under $300K with reasonable fees and land tax--One house I looked at had $10K yearly property tax . The bad thing about Ottawa is that there are not many people in the streets anywhere. Kind of a lonely looking place tbh
For me Bilingual is a reason to love Ottawa. Ottawa is not that cold compared to Calgary, Edmonton, Regina, Quebec city. The only thing I don't like is the housing
If you love the cold and can speak French Ottawa would be a great place to live! I just read housing prices in the US are about half of what they are in Canada while disposable income is about 10% higher. Housing really is expensive in Canada.
They are definitely on our list. We are just waiting until spring/summer when the grass is greener and flowers are blooming! We will also be adding Waterloo. We have a few more on Mexico coming first.

“Ecspecially” - bilingualism is actually an asset. But hey, not for everyone. Especially if learning one. Cold - yeah, it’s cold. One of the best cities on the planet for all season activities. Access to hockey and skiing and snowshoeing - all accessible. Transit - the LRT has had issues. - second coldest capital in the world, btw, not first. I lived in Ottawa from December 2011 to November 2021. It only started changing to become a modern city in 2014. The snow that lingers and overcast fall, winter and spring is much too unbearable. Downtown feels unsafe and it is filled with many odd people in large parts, close to the city, eg. Vanier. Gatineau was much nicer but too quiet and lonely during winters. I'm back in Singapore now but Ottawa will always have a special place and memories for me. The short summers are really awesome in this city!
Entirely understandable that the weather got to you that much. Winter ruins my morale every year in South Carolina, and I'm a New Jersey escapee. SAD is a thing.
Extreme cold?!?! 😂😂😂😂 this guy is obviously from Vancouver!!! Ottawa is the average of average Canadian winters. Extreme cold? That’s the prairies and the territories.
I have to question your level of education if you are having a hard time reading signs that are bilingual and make it a negative point! I know it’s crazy hard to understand for someone like you that a country can have two official languages and it could be needed for a job lol
The point was to let people know that if if they want to live in Ottawa and they don’t speak French it could be a detriment when they try to get a job. Especially if they want a job that involves interacting with the public.
Ottawa is turning into a terrible place to live. I have been here for 50 years and it has been ruined by too many immigrants allowed in too fast and drugs and crime raising rapidly. The reasons you give ain't the real problems.

i went to ottawa a few monthes ago in the summer i loved the area of the byward market is was around 6pm and was extemly busy
Thanks for sharing your unique perspective. Really appreciated!
Ottawa native here with a pro tip: Burn Your Plane Ticket...N😂W.
Just a quick correction: Ulanbataar Mongolia is the world's coldest capital. Deserts can get incredibly cold during the winter.
Thanks for catching that. We had always heard it was the coldest but we should have double checked!
Yup, Ottawa is only like 7th coldest.
Than moscow?
I have been to both ulanbataar and Ottawa,Mongolia was colder,Ottawa isn’t so bad as I had a car.
Ulanbataar is way up in the mountains, no wonder it's cold. Ottawa is the coldest capitol city at relatively ground level!!!
Hello from Hanoi ! Lived in Ottawa before and moving back soon. I’m a bit scared 😟
@@cggf6147 scared of what?
As somebody who thinks that Ottawa looks like a nice place to live, I like hearing the views of somebody who would advise against it. I still think that it might be worth considering, as I've never gotten along well with hot weather. It's also good to hear a local perspective on what the public transit is like.
You are right that Ottawa is a nice place to live...ignore clickbait haters like this joker.
Is it cold more than St John's NL?
I checked online and it looks like Ottawa is the winner for being consistently cold over the winter compared to St. John’s. Brrrr!
Lived there for the majority of my life. Left for good in April and will never go back. The winters are absolutely unbearable for me.
Yes, the winters are freezing cold that’s for sure!
I’m confused because the other city you mentioned get snow before Ottawa
Of all the cities we have made videos about so far, Ottawa has the longest and coldest winter. 🥶
More public transit and fewer cars is definitely better. Thanks for your comment!
You also have to be realistic most people prefer to own a car. And have total freedom of movement, total schedule control, total comfort and total privacy
I used to use metro system and bus system here at montreal from 18-23
But by 24 once i had my own car and driver liscence. I could not get myself back using bus/metro 😂
With my car i am not limited to bus/metro schedule. To their specific road. Some areas are not well served. If you want to travel out of the city you gonna need a car.
And love total privacy. And i am guaranteed to have a seat in my car. While you can forget about that with bus/metro during highly active hours
Also canada is way too cold and too humid high heat during late june july august.
Metro wait time is 8-10 minutes
Sidewalk in montreal are very safe. Lot of people even walk on sidewalk very late at night. And everyone feel safe. Even small height women feel safe
The reason i got a car had nothing to do with montreal transport quality and sidewalk safety. Its just cars beat metro/bus/walking for reasons explained in my earlier comment
Especialy in a bad uncomfortable weather country or a boring repetitive country that dont motivate people to roam a lot outside like our dear canada lol
Yes, Ottawa does have a lot to offer that’s for sure. And if you like skiing or winter activities, it’s great.
So as someone who isnt bilingual do I have no chance in finding a job in ottawa?
There are plenty of jobs you can find in Ottawa where you don’t need to be bilingual.
Nope, go home and find a job there.
Thanks for watching, and your feedback. I always like to include the cons I see from my perspective…
According to you..Which is the best city to live in canada..??
We haven’t decided yet. Over the next few years we will be checking out many cities in Canada, the US and elsewhere and making videos about the pros and cons.
Eventually we will pick our favorite!

I doubt you will find a perfect place since you seems mofe inclne to look at negative aspects. I traveled a lot and all cities visited have their good and bad sides. Better to question yourself on who you are to better find out what enjoyed you the most and then accept the bad sides of the place chosen because perfect place does not exist...
so where do you live now?
We are still searching for where we want to live. We are checking out Mexico now. It will probably be a couple years until we decide.
It is still a clean and pretty city. And diversity is good. Two official languages we are fancy. Love it or leave it I guess.
Leaving Ottawa the dumpster town. And soon too
Yeah, as an Ottawa resident, when you mentioned how a bus will just drive on by, and they only run every 30+ minutes, coupled with the winter, well you get the idea. It can suck!
Thanks for sharing! Nothing worse than waiting for the bus in frigid weather….
@@ShouldWeLiveHere or it just never shows up! And you're standing there in -17 wind
Public transportation is the worst in Ottawa, its not functional at all. You're looking at 2hour or more to get anywhere. I grew up in Montreal and Public transportation is seamless.
For us it was better before the LRT when they had dedicated bus lanes
In 2010, I had moved to Ottawa from Sudbury then in 2022 I moved from Ottawa to Montreal and now 2024 I am back in Ottawa, ontario because it is the best place to live in Canada and more affordable and less crimes than the rest of Canada. And because Ottawa is the capital of Canada there is alot more financial help than the rest of Canada. Easier at finding a family doctor.

yeah in canada you need to speak both french and english even on the quebec side there are way colder places other than Ottawa in Canada
Weather-wise, Ottawa is on par with Montreal.
I’m glad you’re liking it there! The cold winters just got to us though over the years….

If you think the North is cold you should move to Antarctica
I lived briefly in the Soo. Moved there in July and the weather was great. By mid-August it felt cold and damp almost all the time. Also found it hard to breathe after a couple weeks with the pollution of the steel mill. Locals seemed used to both. I did not stay long, largely due to the breathing issues, which cleared up almost immediately after we got past Sudbury. Moved back to Southern Ontario by October and the weather here was so much warmer!

don't buy a house in ottawa . The property taxes are insane . Probably THE one city where a condo is smarter
Condos can be good but can have high HOA fees. We saw many places where condo fees were over $1,000 a month. Snow removal can be expensive which raises the fees.

@@ArshDeep-qs2hs I don’t have a lot of experience with that but here is an organization that does. isso.ca
Be sure to also watch our other video about the things we love about Ottawa. I hope you enjoy your time there!
If u want to talk about all the negatives then it won’t be appealing to anyone. Maybe just keep to yourself
We also made this video about the reasons why Ottawa is great but it appears people are more interested in knowing why they shouldn’t move there. ruclips.net/video/K3iZ2Js1VDk/видео.html
Ottawa's a toilet. It use to be lovely with low crime. Transit is a joke with No See Transpo and the No Train. For years city council hasn't done a good job. Snow removal is brutal. I lived there and am so happy that I no longer do.
Where did you end up going?
I've lived in the Ottawa area since 1974. I am tired of the cold. I will retire to southwest Ontario. Maybe Strathroy.
Thanks for watching! We will add Strathroy to our list of places to check out. Our next few videos are about places in the US. Housing is so affordable there compared to Ontario!
