  • The Rolling Stones have finally released the legendary El Mocambo 1977 club shows on CD. This long awaited grail is everything I could've hoped it would be...and more. It's one of the great live albums of all time.

    While to me the Mick Taylor era will never be equaled- this is as close as you're going to get. The band is sharp, and they didn't just perform a "greatest hits" show, which gets really stale after a while. Superb set, great sound.

    • @TheAlanRosenbergShow
      @TheAlanRosenbergShow  2 года назад +5

      Yes. And the best Ronnie Wood as ever played with the stones in my opinion. He really had something to prove at the time. Big shoes to fill. And he did a great job as clearly heard on this album.

      @@TheAlanRosenbergShow Indeed. Woody never sounded better with the Stones-or even as good-as this show as far as I'm concerned. His solo on Little Red Rooster is eerily Taylor-like, though more subdued.

      @@TheAlanRosenbergShow I agree Ya Yas is best ever - I do think Ronnie Wood needs a bit more credit though - I know you said he's great on this - and I know Mick Taylor is obviously a blues virtuoso - and their best albums are in his era. But his energy, and even just his playing and love of playing re-energizes the Stones even to this day. It not just lead vs rhythm -its just guitar - that makes you move

    • @TheAlanRosenbergShow
      @TheAlanRosenbergShow  2 года назад +4

      @@deand7348 absolutely true. Stones would have been long gone without Woody saving the band and being the middle man between mick and Keith.
      But I do wish woody would have maintained the high level of lead playing he did in 75 and 76. The weaving is great but sometimes a little more would be nice. Thanks for watching and commenting

    I listened to it and as you said Alan, it's fantastic overall. It goes to show that now the Stones are starting to see that they have to really take the "hidden" material out and the theatre shows, because the classics are very worn out. The great thing about this record is how fresh it sounds. The band sounds looser, probably because they were just trying to get the feel for the 1978 tour, so there was no pressure. A great homage to Charlie too, he was fabulous in this show.

    I really love your review!!! I could not agree more with:
    1) The sound of this recording. As sharp as hell. No only the band was ON FIRE, as you mentioned, but also the remasterization was PERFECT. For example, it's absolutely impressive how the rhythm guitar can be hear in Crackin' Up (and also the piano at the end), in comparison with the Love You Live version, which I think is the same version.
    2) The outstanding set list of songs.... OMG!
    3) The concept of being almost live. I mean, you can hear plenty of dialogues between the stones, which makes you travel directly to El Mocambo.... the one that you mention that Charlie is a jazz drummer, but also the one that Ronnie invites people to his room... haha. And many others.
    Thanks for the review!

      Hi Manuel. Thanks for watching and your amazing comments. I really really appreciate it. So glad you mentioned Crackin' Up. Yes to my ears sounds almost identical to Love You Live, yet so much better on the new El Mocambo album. I know some people are complaining that the mix on the new release is to big - sounds like recorded in an arena vs a small club sound. But not to me. I love the big sound. Sounds fantastic and so exciting to me. And yes the Charlie comment is hysterical...love it. Anyway, thanks so much again.

    I think “Brussels Affair” is the best live recording of the Stones ever. That version of “Midnight Rambler” is sublime. After that, I’d say that the 1995 European shows were great. “Gimme Shelter” from the Amsterdam show is the best version ever. But for historical reasons I’d give it to “Ya-Ya’s” with 1995s “Stripped” following closely for best live recordings.

      @@TheAlanRosenbergShow YA YA deluxe set should have released the concert with the songs in the correct order and take the songs on the 2nd CD and insert them in the correct placement as played during the concert. Unfortunately, the Stones don't own those recordings, so there is nothing they can do. The 1969 Oakland concert, which I have as a bootleg CD, is a better representative of their live act. Fidelity may not be as good, but you get the complete concert and the songs in the correct order.

    Good review, man. Well done! I've just subscribed. This may be the best club gig by a rock band I have ever heard. Only 45 years late! When the Stones were recording Exile in 1971, Andy Johns, an engineer on it, handed Keith a guitar one day so he could join in a version of "Bitch" other band members were starting in on. Andy said he knew when he heard him play why Keith was so vital to the band. I always wondered what he heard. Now I know - it's on Route 66 (I think the boot version I know is from the first show and Keith's playing is even more urgent and funky, but whatever). Bill's bass throughout is great - they really lost something when he left in 1992. And now Charlie has died and Keith can't play so much any more, which is a different story, but this was a club gig during their glory years. And I agree - Ronnie was great on the '75 tour. I love the '78 tour too - they had the weaving down by then - I'm sure you know Handsome Girls and the whole Detroit gig from that tour ...

    Both this album, and your review of it Alan, were an absolute joy. It's just wonderful....not 100% perfect of course, but then nothing ever is (unless you're Michelangelo carving a statue of David).
    Here's a penny for my thoughts on the album, in the hope that people won't be too bored by them.
    Bottom line, the deal here is that Bob Clearmountain remixed the tapes from the Love You Live sessions, and the end result is a whole lot funkier and dirtier than what we got in 1977. For sure, side 3 of LYL, the club side, was a novelty, bookended as it was by live material from stadiums in Paris and Los Angeles over the previous two years. It was possibly also a sop to sniping UK punks, who felt the Stones had become irrelevant and overblown stadium bores.
    Trouble was, there was something just a little bit squeaky clean about side 3. A whole lot of fun, of course, and a breath of fresh air compared to some other parts of LYL, but still.......
    For those who complain that listening to the blues is like watching paint dry, the opening track (Mannish Boy) was guilty as charged; Around & Around managed to sound like a toytown version of Chuck Berry; and Little Red Rooster, fine as it was, was completely lacking in the sly barnyard menace of the Stones' original cover. Happily for all though, Crackin' Up (track two) was a revelation, and wonderful by anyone's standards, so it really ought to have been a single release back in '77, surely?
    Anyway, here we all are, forty-five years later, and Bob Clearmountain has completely reimagined/reconceived/reconfigured our hearing of this live set. Some of Jagger's onstage patter has been removed, for a variety of reasons, but no serious harm is done by that. Lets take a peek at the track listing:
    Honky Tonk Women: the opening track on all the live shows '75 thru '77. I'm not sure why, as it seems rather plodding and pedestrian compared to the '69 thru '73 live versions, and can only surmise that the band were finding their feet, so to speak, and settling into a groove for their show that was about to unfold.
    All down the Line: In my view, the 1973 version of this song (Brussels) totally kills this later version from 1977. Mick Taylor wasn't always better than Ronnie Wood, by any means, but in this instance he really was, and his beautifully melodic lead knocks Ronnie's incessant twirling into a cocked hat I'm afraid. For me anyway.
    Hand of Fate: superb as track 2 on Black & Blue was, it didn't really achieve any real traction live in shows over the following years, and nor did Hey Negrita, which really was superb. So it just about passes muster here, I guess, if not a great deal more.
    Route 66: you look at the back of the album cover, and see this track listed, and think 'Amazing, the Stones going back to their roots'. Trouble is, it's not quite as exciting as it ought to be, although I gather that there are rawer and funkier versions out there from the same time period. Knebworth perhaps?
    Fool to Cry: sugary and schmaltzy as hell on Black and Blue, and none the worse for that either, but live, it just seems to fall flat as a pancake. Who can blame Keith Richards for falling asleep whilst performing this song?
    Crazy Mama: at last, we're cooking! I'm afraid I didn't take to this final cut on Black & Blue at all (nor the first track either, sadly) and felt that the Stones were quite unnecessarily coming over all Led Zeppelin, with less charm than a juggernaut driving through a quiet country village. Let's forget all that however: this new rendition has a whole new lease of life breathed into it and is magnificent.
    Mannish Boy: this Muddy Waters cover benefits infinitely from Clearmountain's fresh mix. The '77 version was a bit of a yawn, but this is terrific.
    Crackin' Up: just great, just great - one of the freshest things the band has ever done.
    Dance Little Sister: the studio version was supposedly recorded in a toilet back in '74, or at least, that was Richards' intention, to make it sound as if it had been. Trouble was, it came out feeling just a little bit contrived. But here, thank goodness, it breaks free of its studio shackles and is a marvellous thing to behold.
    Around & Around: much better here than on LYL. Dirty, rocky, and fun.
    Tumbling Dice: I'm told that at least 50 versions of this song, if not 100, were recorded back in Nellcote, and I'm not by any means certain that that the final product on Exile was the best one to have chosen. And exactly the same goes for All Down the Line too. The band seem to have nailed Dice in '73, with its lovely horns at the end, and again in '75 in LA, although on Love You Live it sounded rather unexciting. I'm afraid I can't get too worked up about this Mocambo version either.
    Hot Stuff: this really comes alive in a way that it didn't on Black & Blue. Great.
    Star Star: I guess the Goats Head Soup version is the definitive one, although the band made a pretty fine fist of it at the LA Forum in '75. This version doesn't do anything particularly special for me, however.
    Let's Spend the Night Together: a lot of fun, albeit not quite as much fun as on the 1981 (Hampton Virginia) live set. But still, it shows that looking backwards (into your back catalogue) can be a way of going forwards too.
    Worried Life Blues: words just fail me; it's superb. Indispensable as all the other guys are, it's a very much a case of no Keith, no Stones, and this song proves that to the hilt.
    Little Red Rooster: dirty, murky and thrilling. A great improvement on Love You Live's rather sanitised version.
    It's Only Rock & Roll: there are some terrific versions of this around (both Paris and Earls Court '76 for example) but this isn't one of them, in my book. Sorry.
    Rip this Joint/Brown Sugar/Jumping Jack Flash: I have a feeling that '77/78 is when the Stones should have started to drop some of the old live warhorses, but here, thanks in very large part to Billy Preston, they sound as good as new. All three are tremendous fun cuts....a lot of fun, so thanks Billy for your contribution.
    Melody: a lovely jazzy track on Black & Blue, and something of a departure for the band at the time. Unfortunately it's one of those songs that doesn't achieve anything live that hadn't already been achieved in the studio; so it's a fun and interesting addition to the set, albeit a rather forgettable one for me.
    Luxury: this is a rather jagged and rough-hewn rendition of that super-smooth and silky song from 1974. And as much as I enjoyed the song back then, this new version is a lot of fun too, with all its gawky stops and starts, which have a certain insouciant charm to them - for all that it shouldn't work on paper.
    Worried About You: beyond magnificent. What else can I say? A bit like the live version of You Can't Always Get What You Want, but with more highways and byways in amongst it than that. Of course it wouldn't have made sense to release this version before the official studio edition came out in '81on Tattoo You, and if they had released it as part of a live set before that date, then Mocambo would have had to have been a double album. Something the public doesn't always want, unfortunately.
    So as a whole, this album is unquestionably up there with '69 (at the Garden), Leeds '71, Philadelphia '72, Brussels '73 and LA '75. (I ought to include Hampton '81 in that list, if only 'Still Life' had been better-edited!). Sorry for those of you who feel '78 should be in there - you're probably right.
    And sorry to you too Alan, this is your forum, your show, and I'm stealing all your thunder, going on like this! My apologies, and all my best wishes.

      You’re not stealing my thunder at all. This is an incredible analysis. Certainly deeper song by song than I did and I appreciate that. I was looking at the forest vs the trees so to speak. I’m a fan of LYL because I saw the stones in 75 and it was life changing. I also thought it was the best or most exciting guitar playing by Woody. He sounded like he had something to prove and was playing dynamic lead guitar. The band is loose and fun and powerful. To me El Mocambo is like that but better because of the incredible set list. It’s a wonderful listen overall. And I love Clearmountan’s production. Like you said it’s not small and squeaky clean. It’s big and loud and powerful. And yes Crackin Up is amazing. Was the highlight on LYL as well to me. Thanks again.

Now, there's something I'd like to ask you: if you compare the four songs from side 3 of Love You Live to the tracks on this new record...I mean...I dunno...they sound different. Take Little Red Rooster: on LYL the guitars are different, expecially Ronnie's. Same thing happens on Mannish Boy: the LYL version seems a little longer and on Crackin' up Ronnie's solo sounds a trifle different. Only Around and Around sounds completely equal. There's nothing I like better than tales of the Stones playing secret private gigs like El Mocambo in 1977, as long as there's a bootleg. I'd like to hear the Toronto material before it was mixed or from another source altogether because the official release always sounded sterile to me. The Stones parted ways with Billy Preston after Toronto, thank God! I honestly enjoy the 'Melody' duet on Black & Blue, but the high-profile presence of Preston with the Stones at Knebworth nauseated me. Jagger went backstage for a 2-song costume change, so what did the Stones do, let Keef sing You Got The Silver & Happy? Negatory in that category: the remaining Stones become Preston's back-up band for Nothing From Nothing plus some other excruciating tune of his. Fair enough, I wasn't at Knebworth and didn't have to endure it, my reaction was to seeing the video. Although introduced as a member of the band, photos from the El Mocambo gigs wisely masked Billy's presence, there are no duets, and only his piano is in the mix. The most egregious detriment of Preston's association with Jagger was the effect it had on his singing. In 1976 & '77 in particular Jagger hammed up his vocals. He could always get campy with dialect and intonation, but there were times (when Preston was around) it got so exaggerated it bordered on clownish. If you listen closely to Jagger's El Mocambo vocals you can hear it, at Knebworth too. Fortunately the Some Girls albums changed that, an album largely of songs about gritty NYC. And Mick was back to snarling lyrics again in the studio and onstage. He lived in the Big Apple with Jerry Hall then and judging from what he used as lyrical fodder (yeah, on East 53rd Street they spit in my face OR people dressed in plastic bags, directing traffic OR I been sleeping after dark I been walking Central Park) it seems like New Yawk New Yawk toughened him up some.

    • @TheAlanRosenbergShow
      @TheAlanRosenbergShow  4 месяца назад

      Yes his vocals were very campy on the 75 snd 76 tour though much of it was cleared up with overdubs on Love You Live. With that said I love how every Stones your up until the recent ones really are quite distinct sounding. Sometimes sounding like a completely band. Do I enjoy the flavors Billy Preston brought to the band especially the occasional funky clavinet. .

They were pretty expensive in their time as well. They were produced by a company called Vinyl Experience Ltd - British - I'm in the US by the way. One is a Mick Taylor box and the other Ronnie Wood. Each comes with a 72 page book (mostly photos) and signed photos (Mick Taylor and Ronnie Wood in each corresponding box). They each have two sliding trays which pull out with CD's. Each CD is the Collectors Edition with original album packaging Digitally Remastered of the following CD's. These are the Virgin Records CD's which in my opinion is the best version of these albums - they sound extraordinary. Taylor Box is Sticky Fingers, Exile, Goats and IORR. Wood box is Black & Blue, Some Girls, Emotional Rescue and Tattoo You. I've only seen these two boxes once in my life in the US and I picked them up....Glad I did. The original versions were in thick cardboard digipak format with certificate of Authenticity. The discs were DSD and SACD which for me is great, because i have an SACD player. They are amazing. As for Bridges, well, I hated the cover lol. I like the album though at the time thought it was a bit of a letdown compared to Steel Wheels and Voodoo Lounge. I LOVE Anybody Seen My Baby as was expecting a big hit with hit, but that didn't happen. The album lacked a classic ballad which the previous two had with Out of Tears and Almost Hear You Sigh. The album was disjointed as it does sound like a Mick album and Keith album done separately combined, which is kind of what it was. The ending with two Keith lead vocal songs back to back (and three in total) was a bit much, as much as I love Keith. But when I listen to it now, it's fine, but certainly no classic. Also I was never a big fan of Saint Of Me, though that worked well live and is much better on No Security. Also Out Of Control is a great song (I call it a later day Midnight Rambler live epic), but it's no much better live on No Security than on Bridges as well. Side 2 being a lot more Stonesy; and also having version 3 of 'Memo" on there. Reason I asked about B2B, because among Stones-hardcores there's quite a difference in opinions on the latter day stuff. Everyone agrees pretty much on the previous albums, but post '89 it varies. Myself I think b2B is by far the best. Going song by song there are many very strong cuts; and they took that whole album on the road basically, and played the sh8t out of it. 'Steel Wheels' was a comeback, tour was good, but it doesn't really have songs that have held up. "Voodoo" is my least favorite of the entire Stones catalog. I am not a fan of Don Was at all. What is especially frustrating is that we heard 'Brew', 'Stew' and 'Residue', which showed us what was in the can. Could have been a great album. 'Bigger Bang' is IMO just a bunch of Jagger demos. I saw the show twice and thought it was fantastic - loved the B-Stage and yes the Stones were still pushing new material and did play the shit out of it....for the better. Out Of Control is epic - a true classic to me. I do not know Flipside but definitely will search it out. By the way I really like Brew And Stew (but don't have Residue). Anyway, thanks so much again - fun "speaking" with you. Very best, Alan

    It was a great show with a few failed experiments and miscues. What's funny is that the "warts 'n' all" presentation actually makes it endearing. I wish that they could nail "Luxury" live but I don't think they ever really will. No matter, this is good stuff for the fans. I agree with the reviewer that the deep cuts were brave attempts to do something different.

      Thanks for watching and commenting. Endearing is a good description. I love their failed experiments as you say. To me more fun to listen to than umpteen versions of the same warhorses over and over. Luxury starts off really rough but they plow through it. It’s a valiant effort and enjoyable as warts and all and I’m thrilled it’s there. It’s better than the rare appearance on the 75 tour I have on bootleg. For these rarely played tracks are always the highlight.

      Wow - I've seen the Stones pretty much every tour starting from 1975, but never in a small place - just arena's and stadiums and never up close. I can't imagine what it must have been like to see them in a club so close. Yes this recording is from the 2nd night with some bonus tracks at the end from the first night. Apparently the 2nd night was much better musically....but there's a big difference seeing it live vs listening at home. I imagine must have been the experience of a lifetime. What I would give to see the Stones back then in a small place playing deep cuts....Congrats! And thanks for watching and commenting.

So to me the official live album Still Life was anticlimactic. Good performances but the album is just ok to me. Love 20 flight rock into going to a Go go.

    • @TheAlanRosenbergShow
      @TheAlanRosenbergShow  2 года назад +4

      @Mike Barooshian Of course it's all opinion. I wish Wyman never left. But I believe he left after Steel Wheels / Urban Jungle because he felt they had reached their ultimate live success and there was no where else to go. Those tours were the biggest ever in it's time. Six sold out nights at Shea Stadium etc - the attendance numbers were beyond belief. And like you said Wyman wanted to write, do solo stuff, photography, metal detecting and more. He knew his writing style (and singing) would not fit within the Stones framework. I do think he could have done solo stuff along with staying in the Stones if he wanted to, but he had been threatening to leave for a long time. Personally I'm glad the Stones continued. Voodoo Lounge, Bridges To Babylon, Bigger Bang were all great tours (I especially loved the B-Stage Arena Shows). And The No Security Tour was a personal favorite of mine. I would've loved Wyman to have been involved but he chose out. They were still amazing tours and some great new music too. Anyway, just my opinion and all this has nothing to do with the greatness of El Mocambo, so let's celebrate this amazing release.

      Obviously I’m not privy to what’s really going on. But on the face of it I totally agree. His pictures missing etc. terrible. But I’ve heard stories that Wyman doesn’t want his pictures on these releases etc. personally seems far fetched to me. But again on the face of it I totally agree with you. Leaves a bad taste in my mouth. But from all my studying of this industry and bands. It’s not unique. Most bands seem to be pretty brutal throughout their histories. Seems to be not much true brotherhood in this industry. For only one example check out the Allman brothers. Brutal. Thanks again.
