  • This is a recording of an emergency call to Bedfordshire Fire & Rescue Service. The caller had the what3words app and was able to communicate the precise location in just a few seconds.
    About what3words:
what3words is the simplest way to talk about location. It has divided the world into 3m squares, each with a unique 3 word address made from three random words. Now people can refer to any precise location - a stadium entrance, a tent at a festival or a parking spot - using three simple words.
3 word addresses are appearing on contact pages, business cards, travel guides and physical signs all around the world. People are using the free what3words app to find friends faster, get accurate directions to that tucked away Airbnb and to drive, or ride, exactly where they want to go.
what3words is available in over 36 languages, enabling over 4 billion people to use the system in their native tongue. It can be used via the free mobile app or online map.

Love the app!! I was excited when I learned about W3W and told my very techie son about it. He was not so excited and said, "latitude and longitude will do the same thing. So what's the big deal?" I didn't have a snappy come-back but thinking about it I could only conclude it's like domain names vs knowing IP addressing. One is easy and the other is not. Am I correct? Is there more to it than that?

Hi Rick. Where I work for Beds Fire the benefit for emergency services is that using words is a lot simpler to communicate over the phone rather than communicating a list of number - like coordinates from long and lat. The other advantage is that when you input the 3 word location a drop down menu will come up and so it's easy to see if there's been a spelling error because if the location isn't in Bedfordshire then we can just double check the spelling. This is much more difficult to do with numbers as if you type in one wrong number you could end up at a location miles away

Many a slip between cup and lip. If my pronunciation isn’t good or there’s loads noise around, it may be difficult to repeat the words over the phone, isn’t there a way of sending my position to the emergency services direct from the app. I can text 999, but there doesn’t seem to be anyway of simultaneously ringing 999 and forwarding them the directions .. at least not on any of the information videos.
