When I play a faction I play only with its troops. Now I made my own troop tree and play with that. Still, for Battania, the most Op troop, except the Fians, is the Wildling. Set them to spread formation, fire at will and do nothing else vs cavalry. Vs infantry, set them to engage in loose formation and they will win.
It's not about the wrong troop, it's about the commander ability to use his troops to their potential. When I pick a faction, I don't use any other troop outside their culture. It's my own handicap I set for me when I play plus it feels more immersive for me and gives me more replay value cause every army/culture has their strengths and weaknesses. Also if you want your army to effectively use their throwing weapons, don't F1 F3, Hit F1 F4, they will kite as much as they can with throwing weapons before they clash. Your welcome :)
One is not understood something about battanian oathsworn. They don't need to kill enemies they need to hold the ground while Fian champions flat the field. And for that they are better than legionary because they have a nice shield, some projectiles and that important braceable spear, one of two unit in the game how has it.

The Battanian Fian Champions are the strongest Battanian troop.
