Been riding since 82 & this motorcycle tops my list. I loved its LED at night, stability, the garmin my moto & how you can easily customize it to suit you, its a shame they discontinued the green. Safe riding :)
Excellent review. I think you have it spot on when you say for the road is perfect. I think BMW know this because of the tyres which are fitted. 21000 euros would allow me to travel a long way and at 5'9" and 12 stones 300kg I know I cannot lift on my own off road. Very many electronics which are great but I cannot fix with my small travel tools kit. I think shaft drive is great but friend of mine nearly fell off when rear oil seal failed. This is apparently not isolated case. Chain much easier if breaks but lubrication a pain without oiler. On your own bike you usually filter but not this one and it has no cases fitted. I think this shows limitations with size. For me BMW build perfect bike with original R80GS but these are now rare and expensive. My lady would love this bike but until I grow 3 more inches and put on 3 more stone and maybe sell a kidney I cannot change. Great review looking forward to next bike test.
As I said it's a great round the world machine, but not for all terrains and not for everybody. The price and the electronics as you said are too much. I prefer to stuck with something more simple, like my Tenere or maybe Honda Africa Twin for future.
Motorcycle Adventures I had an original Africa Twin which was great until someone stole something parts from it and I could not relax leaving it. New one looks great but still heavy. Everybody seems to like though. Perhaps in future but for now I must stick. it is no good me having great bike I cannot afford to ride. Happy travels. Pavlin.
This review was great. Thank you! It so happens I'm taking delivery of this exact bike tomorrow! So this came in really handy. Thanks for doing it!. . . . .Jim C
Nice bike but expensive. I have a Tenere and love the machine. I went with a 1200 because I ride two up quite a bit and wanted to have enough power. I have ridden dirt bikes most of my life and it does take a while to get used to the additional weight of these bigger bikes. That said, the Tenere is a fantastic ride and easy to handle because it carries it weight very well. Price is good compared to the GS. Great review thought.
SIMPLY FANTASTIC. Thank you very much for your review, I was looking for a well done review for a long time and I FOUND YOURS. All the best my friend. Your new Brazilian friend. Luiz C Laba
Got exactly same bike: '17 Triple Black ADV, I've exactly the same observation: it's great! The only comment is related to fuel consumption: the computer shows the average of the last thousand 4.6 liters (2 people with 3 trunks) - after refueling it shows a range of over 600 km (!) and this is honestly true :-)
Try the f800gs, you will find a compromise between weight, power and off road capability with an more affordable price. Ride safe. The channel is 10. Grüßen.
I love the look of these bikes, especially in black. I only wish the crash bars were black too, so they wouldn't hang off the bike like silver spaghetti. Nice review, thank you and hello from Japan.
Hah! If youve got the Testbike from BMW Motorrad Berlin i rode the same one! it had 350km on the clock at that time. And... confirmed my expectations! Bought just the same thing. Only thing i had to get used is to not hit my shin on the boxer all the time. Great review - keep up the good work!
Brilliant review, i'm looking forward to see your next adventure motorcycle test. If you have the time, post about the preparation you're having to your Mongolia trip, certainly to August, you are already managing lots of things.
Hi, the bike is ready to go any time anywhere. I will do just the standard maintenance + new spark plug, valves adjustment, new well bearings and I am ready to go. About my nothing to prepare, just one Russian Visa. I will make one clip about it before I go.
Hello Pavlin, I'm watching you from Riga. Great review with good arguments. Weight matter when bike stuck for example in mud, and you not able to pull it out. I wish you, always meet right people in you adventure to Mongolia!
O, thank you my friend. In Mongolia I will go with my trusty Tenere. This big beast is great, but it's not my tip. I prefer to be simple and as light as possible. Thanks for watching!
Hi Pavlin. Nice review. However, with the exception of very hardcore offroad (jumping over logs, no roads at all, etc) I always use my GSA. A fantastic bike. And if you go to Mongolia it will be your best companion (remember, not many fuel stations there). Weight is not the issue when offroading, balance is. Take an offroad class in Hechlingen and you will understand and you WILL start saving up for this magnificent toy.
Hi Martin, I full understand that. I have a lot of off roads hours, I use to ride enduro bikes, but the weight always matter. Thanks for watching and ride safe!
Nice review! I like your videos. For the GS I have 2 cons more. 3. Con it is so thick not only heavy 4. Con there are so many of them here in Germany, it is the vw golf of motorcycles
I think the flip down break petal is meant for standing or sitting. I just don't get why people make a big deal on the "Quick shift". Every Japaneses bike I've own from the mid 90's can do that.
I've had several boxers, and personally don't find them too heavy all. Partly because the weight is very low (especially compared to other bikes of this type/capacity). Because of the low centre of gravity the wright literally seems to disappear as soon as you start moving. I can turn mine on full lock without foot hoping no problem. The handling at any speed is unbeatable in my opinion. They are totally comfortable (I travel from the uk to Heidelberg every year), use it for work and keep up with my mates in their sports bikes in the weekend blast. Not happy with the temperamental left switch gear, the poor paint in the cylinders & final drive. These need a lot of ACF50 applied regularly to keep them right. The price however is getting silly. £17k in the UK. For a bike? And still have to pay £600 extra for a satnav?
I've never ridden a motorcycle before, and I bought this bike a week ago, haven't ridden it yet but will be home soon to try it out. Do you think I'll be able to manage it?
Yours is the best motorcycle channel out there! I'm a GSA rider since 2007 and haven't a bad word to say - I go long distance but not off-road. If you use the Contour camera for vlogging, how do you record sound - there is only an internal mic yes?
Great review. Nice bike. HUGE though. Too expensive for me. With all that tubing wrapped around it there's lots of hand holds for the three people I'd need to help pick it up should it fall over.
Thank you for great review and dedicated work as always! What do you think about BMW F 800 GS Adventure? It weights 230 kg, 30 kg less then 1200 GSA. Do you think that this model would be good for your type of riding on off-road terrains like Mongolia in matter of weight?
Hi, actually I already have video for GS 800 Adventure. Next week Africa Twin and after that the GS. I think that it is very good bike, for me at the moment there are two problems: Not possible to make do it yourself service and too expensive.
Motorcycle Adventures Thank you for replying. Can you explain me what do you mean by "not possible to make do it yourself service"? I didn't understand what you wanted to say, sorry.
The bike is too complicated. Too much electronics and for everything you have to go to BMW service. This I don't like. I prefer to make everything alone. Unfortunately with most of the new models is not possible. I hope is clear now.
Motorcycle Adventures It's perfectly clear now, thank you for answering, I'm looking forward to watch your videos about Africa twin and 800 GSA. Keep up the good work, respect from Serbia
I cannot agree on the review at the end. I like the review though. I have a 1200GSA and do 80% offroad, I have done thousands of KM on gravel and bad roads. I have been on tracks loose stones and sand many times. The other day I took it around the MX track no problem. The weight is a problem in the beginning but I got use to it, I go most places the other guys on lighter bikes go. A lighter bike is obviously better in off road conditions but the 1200GSA can go off-road. If it falls over (and it will) it is not easy to pic up. My weight is 72kg and I am not very strong although I can pic it up if it has no luggage. Weight is a problem but not so big that it cannot be used off-road. My son and I went toget on the bike. We did a 7000km trip through africa. We did fall over about 10 times. The total weight with both on had to be about 400kg. Sand was the p[roblem. I just went slow in 1gear 0.6bar front and back (TKC80) and we made it. Thanks for your wonderful contribution to the adventure world. I enjoy your videos and they are the best out there. .
I've watched a lot of your reviews on adventure bikes - all very good. On one of your reviews you commented on the shaft drive and that you didn't like it so much. If possible, may you could share your thoughts about the difference between chain and shaft drive for adventure bikes. .... Looking forward to more videos. Be safe. ;-)
The difference for me is that if it's brakes down, the drive shaft is almost impossible to fix on the road. Chain you can buy from everywhere, cut it and use it, but with the drive shaft, you will need a special spare parts. If you are in remote area, you have to wait many days until somebody ship the parts for you.
There are 2 things: a) the bike is huge. I tried it and it was ok for my 2 meters. If you are normal size I would consider something a little bit smaller. b) it is very powerful. You must have things sorted in your brain if you want to start on such powerful bike. If you are young and want to show yourself, I think you will hurt yourself.
"If you want a big heavy touring bike,..." Yes, that is a little heavy for off road but for touring it works well *Comparisons* 2018 Honda's Goldwing tourer (non DCT) weights *787 lbs* 2018 Suzuki's Burgman 650cc scooter weights *618 lbs* The 2018 BMW R1200 GS weighs *538 lbs* ready to ride & this 2017 BMW 1200 GSA weighs *580 lbs* wet. I will get a GSA, if the price is right in Feb. 2018. So I was curious too about weighs.
I have to agree, big bike limits off road capacity, great on road and not many in Mongolia. Begs the question of what the difference between touring bike and adventure touring bike ? Be nice to know how many BMW GS are bought against the RT for example and how many riders take the GS off road, is it just a trend ? Maybe one of the reasons Triumph no longer make the Trophy, most people bought the Tiger 1200 instead. Are older style touring bikes dying out because riders want to be Ewan and Charlie ? Walter Colebatch of Siberski extreme says buy the bike for the worst part of the adventure not the easiest.
Nice video, yes GS is an enormous bike but toooo much big and fat, liquid cooling !!!!!!!!!!!!! they ware very good just without I don’t know what the hell BMW was thinking about to add liquid. I had the chance to have just a mall ride with 2014 model and it’s just fantastic. You didn’t spoke about cardan transmission, what are your thoughts about, and why other big trails (Africa Twin, KTM Supper Adventure….) didn’t the same?
Hi, I did not said anything about the drive shaft, because there is tons of information online. I prefer chain, yes, it has maintenance, but easy to fix in the case it brake down. With broken drive shaft, for example in Himalayas, you have to stay until you receive all the spare parts. No thank you. Reviews of Africa Twin, GS 800 Adventure, KTM 1090 Adventure and many more will come soon. Next week Africa Twin 2017.
Totally agree with you, plus the wait will be much more less and even you can plane to take with you a full chain kit but not a full cardan kit ;-) Impatient o see Africa Twin and GS800, my favorite bikes I wish if Ténéré had an engine like GS800
A absolutely perfect machine .... for all the guys, they don´t trust their own underpants! Thank good, that BMW didn´t build a roof on this overload truck! Are you still alive or do you already drive a BMW 1200 GS .... :-) ???
A really LOVELY "fatty girl"!!! GLÜCKWUNSCH... fur das Motorrad-Test!!! Lucky you!!! Grusse aus Mexico... nach Berlin!! (Beautyful city... hope sometime I could go there, again!!!!) Would you (sometime) make part of any of your videos in (or nearby) the "Goldelse"? When I visited Berlin... didn´t have the chance to went that place and... I really like it! (Maybe because of the movie "DER HIMMEL ÜBER BERLIN"!!!) (Sorry if my Deutsch writing is not very good... I just know a few words/phrases of it!!!) HEHEHE! ;) Entschuldige dich!!! HAAAA!!!
Motorcycle Adventures its more like a adventure tourer..its way to heavy now..almost like a goldwing. its absolut amazing to ride for a very long time...for ofroad the 800 is better. personaly l like the R1200GS betye cause its slimmer and looks better. l also think its a better and more agile everyday bike. Thanks for another great film..
Motorcycle Adventures agree..borroed a GS one time and it was very good in the city as well as the mountain roads..The GSA is to big for my taste..but you buy what you like/love if you have the cash for it...
They're far more capable off road than you would imagine. I rode one on road for years and had the same opinion, then was fortunate enough to compete in the International GS Trophy, and couldn't believe how good these big bikes were off road!! Here's what we did with them: ruclips.net/video/_aA6-wWTwyI/видео.html
I always said that in the right hands any bike will work, but the majority of people don't have the skills to handle that weight off road. About the video: Made by professionals, great footage, great places...great nature...it's easy to make it to looks difficult than it was and to present the bike as a real off road machine, but the reality is far far away... no upset, but I have seen enough GS bikes in very difficult situations. It's a very good motorcycle, but not for all roads and not for everybody.
Nice bike if someone would make a gift of it, but otherwise: Too big and too heavy, too expensive, too much electronics. Did I mention it's too expensive? Also too heavy!
Why is single sided swing arm bad design for off-road ? Have you tried it off-road ?I am asking as I travelled more than 80,000km ove the last 20 years, off-road here in Australia on two GS bikes (R1150Gs and R1200GS, both oil cooled). First was heavier but less sophisticated but R1200GS (not adventure) was perfect. Total weight with petrol was 230kg, with camping gear luggage and extra petrol around 260kg. Dropped it countless times at various speed (sand, gravel, mud) and never had issues nor anything got broken. Never had an issue with suspension, nor I had difficulties lifting it up on my own (it is never down flat 100%). I had Honda AT (was supposed to replace gs) and it felt lot heavier on road and when I dropped it off-road it was always difficult to lift it on my own and something ended up broken every time. It basically lays down as dead horse and you feel every kg when you are lifting it. Not the case with oil cooled r1200gs
Sorry, old technology. KTM 1290 SAR is lighter, faster, modern technology. Even BMW Motorrad is admitting that boxer engines are technology of the past and are working on a succesor for this old lady. Look at the F850GS which is showing the future of BMW adventure Motorrad.
Motorcycle Adventures youre the best. Cannot fault your reviews ATAALLL, keep up the good work
Thank you for watching Roger!
Motorcycle Adventures always a pleasure
They have done a KILLER job with those spoked wheels. Gorgeous
Been riding since 82 & this motorcycle tops my list. I loved its LED at night, stability, the garmin my moto & how you can easily customize it to suit you, its a shame they discontinued the green. Safe riding :)
Simply perfect review well done. Ive subscribed, and can not wait for more excellent content.
Thank you very much! I will not disappoint you! Ride safe!
Great video man! You answer all the questions a biker would ask! Great work! 👍🏼
Thanks for the review. I am thinking of buying one not for off road but for long journey within the cities of Kenya.
Excellent review. I think you have it spot on when you say for the road is perfect. I think BMW know this because of the tyres which are fitted.
21000 euros would allow me to travel a long way and at 5'9" and 12 stones 300kg I know I cannot lift on my own off road.

Thank you Richard, the same for you, happy travels!
Nice review. For the hand-guards - I have installed the GIVI plexi-glass - added to the the original . They are great.
This review was great. Thank you! It so happens I'm taking delivery of this exact bike tomorrow! So this came in really handy. Thanks for doing it!. . . . .Jim C
You are welcome again. Every week, new video. Ride safe!

Your new Brazilian friend.

So, that is mean that my mission is complete it.
Yes, very nicely done.
Bloody good review... great job my friend! I am subscribing and looking forward to more reviews from you :)
The name of the susspension is,,PARALEVER"!Good film as allways!
Got exactly same bike: '17 Triple Black ADV, I've exactly the same observation: it's great! Silver spaghetti 😂😂

Yes, it was the test bike. Great bike, but too heavy and too expensive for me. Ride safe!
Hello Pavlin,
I'm watching you from Riga.
3. Con it is so thick not only heavy
4. Con there are so many of them here in Germany, it is the vw golf of motorcycles
It's really depends from the point of view.
With some practice yes!
thanks for the videos but could you do a Ducati MultiStrada1200 Enduro/ Enduro pro?
Thank you. That's the bike for me!
Great! Buy it and enjoy your trips!
Yours is the best motorcycle channel out there! I'm a GSA rider since 2007 and haven't a bad word to say - I go long distance but not off-road. If you use the Contour camera for vlogging, how do you record sound - there is only an internal mic yes?
Hi, I use recorder device to get the sound and then add it to the video.
Great review. Nice bike. HUGE though. Too expensive for me. With all that tubing wrapped around it there's lots of hand holds for the three people I'd need to help pick it up should it fall over.
"When" it falls over.
great review
Thank you for great review and dedicated work as always! What do you think about BMW F 800 GS Adventure? It weights 230 kg, 30 kg less then 1200 GSA. Do you think that this model would be good for your type of riding on off-road terrains like Mongolia in matter of weight?

The bike is too complicated. Too much electronics and for everything you have to go to BMW service. This I don't like. I prefer to make everything alone. Unfortunately with most of the new models is not possible. I hope is clear now.
Motorcycle Adventures It's perfectly clear now, thank you for answering, I'm looking forward to watch your videos about Africa twin and 800 GSA. Keep up the good work, respect from Serbia
I will, thanks for watching my friend!
Does it have heated seats!?
I cannot agree on the review at the end. I like the review though. I have a 1200GSA and do 80% offroad, I have done thousands of KM on gravel and bad roads. .
In the right hands any bike could go anywhere, but how many are skilled enough to control this bike off road?
Just curious, why would you NOT choose a lighter bike? What makes this BMW better for you?
You know what, just today i made about 300 KM on a 250 cc, back home one guy with gs1200 a big cases and without a helmet, just chilling in the city.
Well, everybody is different...
they stopped using their wierd turn signal buttons on both sides?
Yes, they stopped. Now is much better.
If you are in remote area, you have to wait many days until somebody ship the parts for you.
I Will have my bike driving licence Soon . Do you think chat the R1200 GS la suitable for a newbie ?
I think that you should start with something like 400 or 600cc, but ...
But ... ? Continue ...
of course it is your choice, you are the rider.
have a joy ride Brother.
There are 2 things:
a) the bike is huge. I tried it and it was ok for my 2 meters. If you are normal size I would consider something a little bit smaller.
b) it is very powerful. You must have things sorted in your brain if you want to start on such powerful bike. If you are young and want to show yourself, I think you will hurt yourself.
Thank you for a great video, in the next few months I will get the same bike, love the boxer engine and technology.
You are welcome again! Enjoy your bike and ride safe!
If you want a big heavy touring bike, this is perfect.
"If you want a big heavy touring bike,..." Yes, that is a little heavy for off road but for touring it works well
*Comparisons*
2018 Honda's Goldwing tourer (non DCT) weights *787 lbs*
2018 Suzuki's Burgman 650cc scooter weights *618 lbs*
The 2018 BMW R1200 GS weighs *538 lbs* ready to ride
& this 2017 BMW 1200 GSA weighs *580 lbs* wet.
I will get a GSA, if the price is right in Feb. 2018. So I was curious too about weighs.
I would go to RT for touring instead.
why not get a Harley for touring
Hi Pavlin,
Its Ashwin from India. :)
Well this is nice initiative and appreciate the idea.
Well, When you are going to review Royal Enfield HIMALAYAN?
I would do it with pleasure, but they are not so familiar here. I can't find one.
When I have a chance to fine one for test ride. Did you have any ideas?
Nice review Pavlin. Now I am waiting for your Africa Twin review. :-)
Actually it's my favourite. I will release it on 11th April.
Looking forward to watching it, my friend. I love that bike.
I"m buying my first lottery ticket.
I will agree with everything you said. " Buy the bike for the worst part of the adventure not the easiest." So truth. Thanks for watching!
Interesting view. ADV bikes as a trendy alternative to uncool touring bikes.
Where is the F was that? The red square?
Perfact review 👍😊
Thanks!
Nice video, yes GS is an enormous bike but toooo much big
and fat, liquid cooling !!!!!!!!!!!!! they ware very good just without I
don’t know what the hell BMW was thinking about to add liquid. I had the chance
to have just a mall ride with 2014 model and it’s just fantastic.
You didn’t spoke about cardan transmission, what are your
thoughts about, and why other big trails (Africa Twin, KTM Supper Adventure….) didn’t the same?
Hi, I did not said anything about the drive shaft, because there is tons of information online. I prefer chain, yes, it has maintenance, but easy to fix in the case it brake down. With broken drive shaft, for example in Himalayas, you have to stay until you receive all the spare parts. No thank you. Reviews of Africa Twin, GS 800 Adventure, KTM 1090 Adventure and many more will come soon. Next week Africa Twin 2017.
Totally agree with you, plus the wait will be much more less
and even you can plane to take with you a full chain kit but not a full cardan kit ;-)
Impatient o see Africa Twin and GS800, my favorite bikes I wish if Ténéré had an engine like GS800
I love that bike too.
It is actually very good bike, nit my type of bike, but good.
Why not your type? Maybe you should also test the non Adventure model. Triple Black.
Thanks for that test. Good video!!
The boss of adventure
Could be...for some people...

i love this motorcycle
This huge bike makes me wonder ,ok it looks impressive but heavy no good for the city no good for adventure but very very good for impression
Exactly
Edwin March has words for you...
testing heavy adv bikes now?!
Yes, correct. All with the word Adventure in the name.
Motorcycle Adventures
its more like a adventure tourer..its way to heavy now..almost like a goldwing.
its absolut amazing to ride for a very long time...for ofroad the 800 is better.
personaly l like the R1200GS betye cause its slimmer and looks better. l also think its a better and more agile everyday bike.
Thanks for another great film..
Yes, it is too heavy, but many people love it. It's not my bike, but I have to say that it's very good choice, if you riding only on the road.
Motorcycle Adventures
agree..borroed a GS one time and it was very good in the city as well as the mountain roads..The GSA is to big for my taste..but you buy what you like/love if you have the cash for it...
They're far more capable off road than you would imagine. I rode one on road for years and had the same opinion, then was fortunate enough to compete in the International GS Trophy, and couldn't believe how good these big bikes were off road!!
Here's what we did with them:

I thing exactly the same as you, it is very nice bike, but not for me.
Ride it on a hot day and you'll cook your legs, it gets really hot, specially in slow/heavy trafic.
I know.
Here is a BMW ...... and there are others .....
Get a better camera 😉
40% failure rate. Consumer Reports. 2018. yamaha Super Tenere is the most reliable adv bike.
Reading the comment section in 2024.
Cool!
single sided swing arm - it's a joke for off-road, very bad design.
This bike is not really made for off road, you can do it, but will be very hard.
You
That bike looks like a ship
I will agree, it's huge.
Sorry, old technology. KTM 1290 SAR is lighter, faster, modern technology. Even BMW Motorrad is admitting that boxer engines are technology of the past and are working on a succesor for this old lady. Look at the F850GS which is showing the future of BMW adventure Motorrad.
I already test it: ruclips.net/video/qbMHAMXYggU/видео.html
Way too porky and heavy! And I'm speaking as an ex owner of 4 GS s.
I will agree with you. Too heavy and too expensive then it should be.
the most overprised bike ever
excellent review
Thanks Niall!
