There seems to be mixed reviews on this method. I never got to try. While downloading the program which this video tell you to get, I went to another website and tried their method. It took 30 seconds, and my problem is solved in 4 simple steps:
Step 1. Press the "Windows" key and type cmd.
Step 2. Right-click "Comand Prompt" and choose "Run as administrator".
Step 3. In the CMD window, type chkdsk G: /f and hit "Enter". (Replace "G" with the drive letter of your external storage device.)
Step 4. Then Windows will start checking and repairing disk errors and damaged files. Wait for the process to finish.
Your method is effective mostly with all different types of drives when the issue is not fatal. Usually everyone should try it and if it didn't work, you can proceed to the one illustrated in this video

The type of the file system is RAW.
CHKDSK is not available for RAW drives. not working 64 GB pendrive i did all steps but not working tried chkdsk not work becuz of dis. WTF I should do?

Hey guys, don't run chkdsk if this is a result of hard drive damage, e.g. you dropped it. Chkdsk might further damage it. Try this, boot up into Ubuntu from a flash drive. Once logged in, plug in your hard drive & if you lucky you'd be able to access it. The error at times is as a result of windows not being able to read it in it's format so you need to try a different OS

For anyone using a USB with "raw chkdsk not working" try plugging the usb into other ports.
What worked for me is..-
Running cmd as administrator then typing "chkdsk H: /f /r" and pressing enter helped me.
waited for the cmd to do it's magic after it said 100% completed.., I simply closed the cmd window and I was able to access my drive.

i have done what you said but my entire hard drive was gone. the drive where my files were there was now showing just the software files of TestDisk. Data was very cruicial to me...please help me out.

Hi, if the method explained above didn't work for you then follow the following:
1- go to findandmount.com/fnmsetup.exe and download their software.
2- install it on your pc
3- once you run it you will get a list of available drives, select the one that you want to fix.
4- click on scan and select thorough scan.
5- right click on the partition that you will get and mount as.
6- assign a letter to the partition and click ok.
7- wait till finished and you're done!

it seems my laptop's hard drive got corrupted due to error in trying to recover my external hard disk using the test disk. Now i cannot boot up and i am stuck in bios page.
i tried creating external boot drive to boot up the laptop but since the pc internal hard disk seems to be corrupted, it is not showing in the driver list on which i am suppose to load the new window os form bootable thumbdrive.

your method split my hard drive in multiple partitions i did not want that from that testdisk tool what option do i use to make it back into one partition for the 960gb
Very recommendable 'TestDisk' Software and also this instruction. To bring this excellent instruction up to date I thought I would share my experiences. I tried 'TestDisk' several times on different PC's running windows 7 and 8.1. It did not work. However, I found once I had done the 'TestDisk' procedure I made a simple dos command of chkdsk (on the portable hard drive whatever drive letter is associated with it). Then re-used the 'TestDisk' software and that did the trick and fixed the problem I could access all my files again. For the dos instruction, my portable hdd was 'E' so the command in dos (cmd in the windows search widow brings up the dos screen) was chkdsk E:/f
