      David Zimmer watched our dad build a three bedroom home in the 50’s and later on when we popped our top to make two story 4,000 sq foot house!

      I was pretty young when my dad built our first house. I had a blast trying to help. My dad had set a 2x4 up against a wall and my brother knocked it down into me and busted my head open. After that I didn't get free run to play everywhere, but I learned a lot while it lasted.

    Love, that your kids are so much apart of the home build. I still remember when I was 4, (45 years ago!) when my dad built our family home. My job was to run the large magnet around picking up all the extra nails! Plus, playing and keeping the family hunting dog, Rusty worn out. I still to this day treasure all the time and wonderful memories with my dad. It was so sweet to see the girls, even your little princess, right by your side helping. The fort and the swings have me a little jealous, though. I never had those! ..lol Looking awesome, seeing a little more of the vision now.

    New to your channel but loving the content so far. Just a trick in case you didn't already know it. If you leave your jack studs out till the very end you can come back and set the skill saw set to the depth of a 2 x 4 and run it right next to your king studs when cutting out your bottom plate for door openings. Then come back and nail in your jack studs.

    I am really liking your video's and work! Planning to start my own soon. I had a thought that you should put a whole house attic fan in the attic with trunks in various locations. That way you can pull cool air in from below and vent out into the attic. Really efficient way to cool the house in the nice months when temps are hot in the day and cool at night. I would do a variable speed fan for adjust-ability. Could even be set up on timers and filter the incoming air below. Not sure if its been thought of on here but wanted to share that with you. Looks amazing!

    Here are some suggestions to help:
    1. If you set your wall plates on edge, you can layout the top plate and the bottom plate at the same time by marking the edge of the plates and it will save a lot of time.
    2. I mentioned this before, but putting in your ceiling backing BEFORE you frame your walls is incredibly important and will save you a huge amount of time. Typically blocks are nailed flat (the 3-1/2" face down) on 2 ft centers. This provides sufficient backing for your ceiling drywall. If you are putting in metal on the ceilings, you will still need backing.
    3. If you pre-cut your door openings half way through when you plate your walls it will save you a lot of time when you cut out the door plates.
    4. Make sure that you install greenboard, blue board or some other water resistant drywall around the showers and bath.
    5. Be SURE and straighten your long walls using a string-line. You will never have a chance to do this again and long walls typically are more than a 1/4" out of straight. You can install blocks between the truss framing and tie off the walls once they are straight and plumb. Tying off your walls is crtically important. Otherwise you may be halfway through drywall and trim and find a crooked wall or an out of plumb wall and then, it's a big problem.
    6. Make sure that you plumb all of your walls as you straighten them.
    7. It is better if you brace your walls diagonally from top plate to bottom plate. Your walls can shift otherwise.
    8. Concerning your HVAC, using two units, one for the upstairs and one for one for the downstairs is very smart. I also suggest that you install zoned systems and they don't cost a lot to install and will save you a LOT of money in heating and cooling costs. Set up your heating and cooling so that you can heat or cool different zones in the house separately. This will work with both forced-air systems and your floor heating (water pipe) system. I can't emphasize doing this enough because it really doesn't require that much more work or cost.
    For example, you can set up the children's bedrooms as one zone that you can heat or cool separately. You can set up the great room area as a zone and when you are sleeping, you don't need to heat it or cool it as much. You set up the kitchen / laundry room areas on a separate zone. Once all of your zones are set up, you can use individual temperature sensors to monitor the different zones. Then you can use thermostats designed for zones to control the zones separately.
    You have a very large, open house. It makes sense that at night, you don't need to be cooling and heating the entire house. You can allow the open areas to be 5 degrees hotter or cooler at night and program your thermostats to start heating or cooling them when you wake up every morning. If you need the children's bedrooms to be warmer or cooler, you can set those temperatures separately.
    9. I would strongly suggest that you install a 5/8" OSB plywood floor at the bottom of your trusses right now. this will allow you to traverse the attic easily and it will allow you a ton of extra storage in the attic areas. Doing it now is easy, doing it later is a pain in the ass. You don't need to go to the cost of using 3/4" tongue and groove because you are not installing a floor on the OSB. 5/8" OSB is half the price of 3/4" OSB and it is strong enough to carry the weight of any stored items that you put in the attic.
    10. I would strongly suggest that you create a large attic access hole to get into your attic. You can use a pull-down ladder (the metal ones are better if you can find them), or in your situation, you could build a stair access to the attic. Also, pre-fab metal circular stairs are sold as kits and they are cheap and they look cool.
    These are just suggestions. You are doing a great job, your home is beautiful!

    Just a quick note. Install some 2' blocks between your trusses and tie off your walls at the center of the walls to the trusses. Otherwise your walls will shift. This is VERY important and will make a huge difference in how solid your walls are. It will also prevent your walls from warping over time. Put in at least one block every 4' - 8' length of wall. Professional carpenters install these blocks on 2 ft centers and use them for backing for the drywall. This blocking serves a double purpose because you can nail the walls to it and brace them straight and plumb. This is very important, please consider my advice. I framed homes as a foreman for years.

      I will put up a vapor barrier. Putting it up first would be ideal but then trying to put walls up, top plates on and nailers becomes a lot of work with out tearing the vapor barrier. No matter what way you choose it’s a pain.

      By the way... absolutely love your channel. Look forward for every new episode and love the details you give. It’s really been helping me figure out our build. Just thank you so much for your documentation

    I am new to the channel you are doing a great job. And I am remodeling a 100 year old home it may have been cheaper to do what you are doing?? I was a little worried about the structure of the home but as I see you adding walls it's like you're adding more support. That will be beautiful when ur done. #RedPoppyRanch built his home by himself as well. Thank you I am learning a lot.

      Thanks for joining us! Sometimes it is cheaper to just build, but old homes often have irreplaceable character which we love. We actually hope to do a complete home renovation on the channel sometime after this home is finished.

    When you put together the wall on the floor, how do you ensure all of the studs are plumb without using a level?

    • @MrPostFrame
      @MrPostFrame  4 года назад

      The top and bottom plates are marked for stud locations and once it is up you plumb each end of the wall and the rest of the studs should be plumb as well.

    Can you put up a floor plan of the entire house and garage? It would be nice to see the full plan.

    You should make some hiding spots in the walls for guns and valuables.

    I thought you said you were going to put a door through to the garage mezzanine on the second floor? Other than that great work!!

    Just curious, why the tub/shower inserts and not tile?

    • @MrPostFrame
      @MrPostFrame  4 года назад +1

      We will tile above them. We've done full tile options before, but didn't feel like we needed them in all of these bathrooms.

    Will you be publishing blueprints when you are done?

    • @MrPostFrame

      Yes, and even before the project is finished. We are almost ready now that the framing is complete.

      It rains pretty frequently in the spring time (now), it's loud now without a ceiling, but it will quiet down a lot.

    Will you be contracting out the drywall or doing it yourself?

    • @MrPostFrame
      @MrPostFrame  4 года назад +1

      Using a sub for that. It's a big, tedious job that we've almost always hired out.

    Why no windows on that wall? Why is the bathtub floating?

    • @MrPostFrame
      @MrPostFrame  4 года назад

      Not sure which of the walls you're referring to. Exterior walls all have windows.
