There was a man who found a solo injured penguin on a beach near his home and he took it home and nursed it back to health until it was well enough to be released. Turns out the penguin wasn’t ready to say goodbye and he came back a few days later to visit with his friend! The penguin now regularly migrates with the local flock and when the flock is nearby he visits the man frequently. Probably the closest a typical person can get to having a pet penguin.

I saw a story awhile back( somewhere in Asia I think?) where this older couple had basically raised a sick penguin back to health and it stuck with them. Pairing their names with food is such a clever way to teach each bird to learn what they're called. Notice how every time she gave a fish to Coco, for example, she always said "Coco," even if she fed that bird multiple fish in a row, she said it for EACH fish. I bet if she stood on one side of the enclosure and called out "Coco," that bird would come running.

I can confirm this. We have two Abbys and one small American (she’s just under 2 pounds), and they are bickering every other hour and do their fair share of spraying, the little one having to stand up for herself the most. I would say that having a bigger enclosure would help, but even during floor time, they’re always bundled up or in line anyway, never far away from the leader’s rear. Half the day, they’re assaulting each other in some way, yet they love and need to do that, haha.

Sorry, I missed this when you first posted. However, I only discovered your channel about 8 months ago. My undergrad degree is in Biology from Univ Missouri, Columbia. I love your channel!
My late mother grew up in Chile before and during WWII. Her father was part owner of the huge nitrate (ancient bird guano) mine near the port of Antofagasta, Chile. She told me Admiral Richard Byrd was a friend of her father's. On one visit to their house, he brought my mom a pet penguin. My guess is that the penguin was either of the Magellanic or Humbert species. It could have been a Galapagos penguin, but she said it was pretty big. Anyway, the penguin had one friend because the Admiral brought a second one for her little sister. This would have been in the late 1930's, so I am sure no special permissions or licenses were required. I wish I had asked more about the Penguins and Admiral Byrd.

Honestly, they seem to be content to just hang around, they don't really like to be handled physically but they don't seem to have any issue with being in close proximity with people. I have to 100% agree with your handleability assessment with the caveat that smaller penguins would be easier to handle.
