Cuvier's Dwarf Caiman, The Best Pet Crocodilian?
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 21 сен 2024
- Alligators, crocodiles, caiman and gharials (crocodilians) are probably the coolest animals on the planet today. They might even be as cool as dinosaurs. The Cuvier's dwarf caiman (Paleosuchus palpebrosus) is the smallest, so perhaps it is the best pet crocodilian? We travel to New England Reptile Distributors ( / nerdreptilesinc ) to answer the question, is the Cuvier's dwarf caiman the best pet crocodilian?

Honestly I’m super thankful for this channel and people like you spreading positivity and facts about reptile husbandry. I think you make the world a better place by sharing this, so thank you.
I live in a tropical Island avg temp 80F, and I have a big backyard. Can the Caiman live in the enclosure with sun, shade and a pond?
Angel Báez I don’t think 80F would be hot enough for a crocodilian
I agree in verbatum.👍
Thought id put this reply here since its at the top. I think the reason the adult reacted at @2:08 is because Clint moved his hand, lightly rubbing the soft flesh inside her hind legs, which is a well known trigger zone in other Crocodilians. That very slight movement triggered the animals fight or flight instinct, and in a crocodilian, even the "flight" reaction is just a touch on the aggressive looking side.
😊😅 tz, Zcb..m😊
Caiman: *growls in Clint's hands*
Clint: This is a great day.
Isn't that pretty much the definition of "a great day"??
“absolutely my favorite animal”
Clint's Reptiles there’s nothing quite like the growl of a crocodilian to make a day truly special, be it for better or for worse.
Do you notice how wide his eyes be lol..... Most will understand,of course it's a great moment, everything would be lol
Wait. That was growling. I thought it was just heavy breathing. Especially since Clint didn't seem to freaked out.
Edit: Okay so they seem to growl often. Normally growling is a warning sign, is it the same for these guys.
Clint is that kid who had a new favourite dinosaur every day, all grown up, living his dream and it’s amazing
YES
I like how clint switched to a baby when the adult started acting crazy😂😂
She'd had enough 😅
😆
😂😂
I actually got startled when that happened 😂
“WTF is this ape babbling about?” 🐊
"Mom somebody's bothering me, come kill them." He says with such a sweet, love filled smile for this amazing animal.
2:05 *Adult caiman starts thrashing*
*Immediately cut to Clint holding a baby instead*
😅
The adult made her point clear from the start.
That was Jasmine and she is 24-25 so I think she qualifies as a Full adult
23:03 Cut to Clint laughing his face off and the baby signaling for mama to kill Clint 😂💖
I literally soiled my pants when it suddenly trashed :|
Edit; Now after watching the whole video I'm quite sure Clint also had similar accidents few times during filming :D
According to that definition, his Caiman are more "friendly" than most chihuahuas.
"Unwillingness to bite"
And
"Allow you to handle them"
As someone who's had to deal with people's tiny little demon puppers on a semi-professional level, I agree wholeheartedly.
Some of yall suck at socializing small dogs and it shows.
(Anyways the reason most 'toy' dogs have such poor behavior is because they are not treated like dogs, their boundaries are constantly pushed to the point of them snarling and biting for 'funny videos', theyre toted around all the time in a small bag, people dont really seriously play with them, most owners rarely teach them anything beyond potty training, and owners dont bother to socialize them. Now imagine doing this to a pitbull. That's gonna be a dog that gets euthanized.
Agree
Chihuahuas get a bad reputation, but it's mostly bad owners not socialising them well or caring for them well.
@@littlechickenman I know, I have a chihuahua that's got a great personality and temperament!
When I was younger, the pet store in the mall had spectacled caiman hatchlings for $99. My mom was tempted. Even at my young age, I knew that wasn't a good idea. I opted for the leopard gecko. That gecko is going to turn 21 this year :)
They were very tempting. What a terrible idea.
You have a 21 year old Leopard gecko. Thats amazing.
Joshua Dill most animals love longer than people think they do lol. Mammals are short lived in compared to fish, birds, and reptiles.
Not humans, but like dogs, cats, horses. They don’t live as long as you would think they would once you look at like parrots and gold fish
*Wow*.
There was a hatchling Schneider’s (closely related to the Cuvier’s) dwarf caiman for sale at my local aquarium shop, but at least that was over $200.00.
They don’t sell reptiles, anymore, just tropical fish.
Why in a mall tho?
I love the little squeak sounds baby crocodilians make. It's so darn cute! I can actually mimic that noise myself.
Perhaps you were a crocodile in a past life? 😉
They do it because they are trying to call for their mother
Animal: exist
Clint: This is possibly my favourite animal in existance
Yeah. This one, though. This one is definitely near the top for me.
Crocogile stop spreading negativity on such a positive channel >:c
@@crocogile2352 *insert sound of baby crock for momma to come kill this nasty comment* Otherwise, carry on and be awesome
@@nicnaknoc that's pretty damn cringe
I loved its scales, it almost looks like a dragon in certain parts of its body that crocodile
I love how Kevin gave the anatomical details of WHY there are certain care requirements. I think understanding those biological mechanisms really helps keepers a lot, not just in making sure care is correct, but also what to fix if you notice health problems.
"coolest animal that's alive today"
never change Clint
I don't intend to 😁
If you like dragons you will love the Abronia lizard
Yes sir
Kevin from NERD is literally reptile royalty. A phenomenal teacher, by way of being a master student. He absolutely never fails to both impress, and astound me with his ability to care for, and socialize with even the hardest of pets. To top that off, I'm of the opinion that he's an actual saint.

*Clint holding adult caiman*
"(...) which is awesome and"
*caiman thrashes*
"WOO!"
*jumpcut to Clint holding a baby caiman*
"Okay moving on"
I laughed so much, you are amazing Clint!
Dude I jumped
I had a caiman alligator when I was 18. It was the first pet i bought when i got an apartment. Back then in the state of Maryland they were legal. I think i paid $50 for him when he was a hatchling. Cute little bastard for a little while until i had to start feeding him man size meals and grew pretty fast. He always hissed at everyone but was pretty lovable to me and my girlfriend (now wife). That boy would sleep on the couch with me. Was almost like having a dog😂. Very big responsibility and you are right, they dont make great pets unless you know what to expect and have the time to put in with the reptile and the room to keep them.
Next episode: Cthulhu, best pet squid?
Do you have one we could borrow??
This comment genuinely made me laugh out loud 😂
linzeepopable that was the idea my man :)
@@ClintsReptiles ya I got two in the back room but dang there fiesty
Handleability, we give it a 1 out of 5, there is a good chance you could lose all sanity and connection to reality holding one of these guys.
I jumped so hard when that first Caiman lunged forward. Love the seamless skip ahead to you holding a baby instead, lmao! Thanks for these videos, I look forward to what you have to say in all of them!
I just did too, and I've seen this before..lol!
Haha 🤣 This just happened to me too! I must have looked ridiculous. 😅
I love how you passed the lead to Kevin for the last half. It's so mature and responsible to share the platform with another expert, different perspectives are so valuable.
I always love how upbeat Clint is while talking about how things can destroy your hands, what a positive guy
You have to love them! Being little monsters is part of what makes them so wonderful 😁
I think it's just that he admires their strength, yet remains cautious
The crocodile breathes like a dragon, Smaug would be proud
@@ClintsReptiles well, just like... kids :D
propably the adrenalin :D
The cut from the adult acting up to him with the baby, is probably the funniest thing i've seen on not only this channel but any reptile related thing ever
I think the greatest testament to how well the guys at NERD know their stuff is that everyone we've seen so far seems to have all their fingers!
I wonder how many we didn't see that are missing a bit lol?!
I love how this channel went from "is this legitimate pet reptile a good pet reptile for you" to "is this wild dangerous animal a good pet reptile? Lol no"
This is incredibly accurate 🤣
People need to hear it. Too many people going to expos and purchasing dangerous animals on a whim, with no clue what they're getting themselves into. People and innocent animals both die on that impulse, so it's great of him to be putting this stuff out there despite how ridiculous it seems to any rational person.
@@ledumpsterfire6474 oh i wasnt saying its a bad thing, i was just laughing at the trend. People do need to know why these animals require such specialised care and how quickly they can kill you
*caiman lunges at nothing*
*cut*
*Clint now holding a new, baby caiman*
yeah, that makes sense
😅
Yeah lol that's just good sense there lol
"You just want your mama to come kill me. That is so thoughtful, you are so thoughtful"
Stay wholesome forever.

I love reptile world ;)
@incinerator950 Reptiles are more related to demons and Satan
from my interactions with crocs while working for a zoo and from what my friends and colleges have said , the best way to deal with a crocodillian is to train it kinda like a dog and not like a lizard. the more you interact it and teach it how to interact via treats and training the better they become .
I’m like 99% sure that the reason the caiman got a score that high was just so that the Savannah monitor could keep the number one spot for worst pet reptile.
I thought the Nile Monitor and Green Iguana had worse scores? ( time to do a re-watch to check oh woe is me :) ).
I thought the kids got the lowest score? Lol
@@katelillo1932 last time I checked human children aren't reptiles haha
@@millie-mayprice891 human children are terrible but very available
Where i can find a human children? Or can anyone tell me how to made one (sarcasm) lol.
I stick with my boa,at least they are cheap and easy to care
Thank you for putting this information up. We had a reptile shop near me when I was a teen. I had a collection of reptiles that I adored. There was no vet around that would see any of my scaled kids so I was on my own for their care. Even library books were inadequate for many non-mammals. Still, I loved them & gave them the best care I knew of. Folks were amazed how social my pets were. I handled them as much as possible & still have the bite scars from some of the grouches. Had the internet been available then, with all this information, it would have made life so much easier for me & my scaled kids.
Most of your videos on large reptiles can be summarized as “Just get a Tegu”
This video is amazing because the whole time Clint is basically breathless in awe at how awesome they are and I'm right there with him
"Somebody's bothering me, please come kill them" is kind of universal request from one's offspring.
I always love the blooper scenes, Clint’s reactions to animals jumping or trying to bite/ run away are SO RELATABLE ❤️
2:10, I felt my heart drop a few inches
Right??
I jumped myself when it snapped at the camera
Frightening!!
I almost soiled myself.
Lol Clint was holding the Caiman like the crocodilian is a very vocal animal which is awesome.
Caiman starts thrashing:🐊
Clint: 😬 Wooh ✋😮🤚
Then comes back with the baby all cool like: 😏 The problem with crocodilians generally is that they're prohibitively enormous.😂
Oh my heavens, those babies are majorly cute! I love the “mama come kill this guy!” Noise they make lol
I love that Clint makes videos about animals that shouldn't be pets - it gives us a taste of what they'd actually be like, and I think it can discourage a lot of perhaps more impulsive people, from getting a pet that's not for them.
You could upload a 24h Caiman Hissing ASMR and I'd watch it
So relaxing.
Lol
I got my reticulated python from NERD and he is awesome. My future bucket list is to get a caiman from them when I move to the country and am more prepared. Thanks for the video!
Crocodilians existed before the dinosaurs and still existed after the dinosaurs so yes they are pretty cool.
I dont know about before, i mean the most basal crocodilians discovered are before the triassic?
They pretty much are natives of everything.
Dinosaurs still exist
There were crocodile-like things before dinosaurs but dinosaurs came first before crocodiles
And sharks were around before there were trees if I'm remembering correctly lol
2:08 So fast, frightening...then funny! Absolutely amazing.
When it comes to hardiness, they survived the impact of an asteroid the size of Mount Everest that killed almost all life on Earth : 5/5

They are on the list of animals that Chuck Norris allowed to live
Adam Robertson pretty hard when that thing doesnt exist, and his idiotic followers think humans lived during dinosaur times.
Exhibit A as to why people think atheists are assholes.
You have to shoehorn it into every conversation just to stroke your ego.
Adam Robertson you are the one who brought god into the conversation though lmao what an idiot. Yea such an ego stroke by pointing out the facts.
If I ever get rich, I’m 100% getting one. It’s like the ultimate pet for an experienced reptile enthusiast.
Lmao "you just want your momma to come kill me"
So cute!
when was that said ? darn, seem to have missed it XD
Love watching Clint and Kevin. Thank you for educating everyone, myself included. I get impulsive on wanting certain animals but I always do lots of research, like months and months worth and talk myself out of getting that particular animal at the time. I would absolutely love love LOVE to have a larger monitor species but I know that I do not have the means to give that kind of animal the space and habitat it deserves and NEEDS. Doesnt matter how bad I want one, I just can't. Maybe one day though. Clint did introduce my via RUclips to the Ackie Monitor which I'm in the process of doing months and months of research on lol anyway, thank you both/all so much. Helping ppl keep the animals they have in a better way with a better understanding.💕
We've been talking a lot about my favorite reptiles of late. I can't tell you what my favorite would be, but I can narrow it down to five for you.
In no particular order:
Common snapping turtles
Dwarf caiman
Gorillas
Great white sharks
Sperm whales
What are your favorite animals?
Haha, Clint said SPERM whale
I cant pick, Hognoses and Leopard Geckos and Garter Snakes are SOME of my favoruites, and of course about EVERY Monitor Lizard, im obsessed with those.
Wolves - I love their family values, Great white shark sheer prehistoric power, owls any owls, although as a New Zealander we have just one native species of owl here, the Morepork or Maori call it the Ruru. I’m fascinated by reptiles but I’ve never held a snake - my geography prevents me from doing that which is why I LOVE your channel. Thank you for the awesome content. Ps your Mother’s Day video was awesome 👏
Canids - because holy success through adaptability batman!
American toads - cute and comically bad at life but still getting it done.
American alligator - Ultra American and incredibly impressive.
Bees - tried to pick just one and I can't, they're all amazin.
Black Capped Chickadee - I just love them. They're not all that special, but they make me happy every single time I see one.
Honorable mentions (aka animals I plan to get because of your channel) Corn snake, BCI boa, Peter's banded skink, pink tongued skink, green tree skinks, bull/pine/gopher snake, and some variety of garter snake and some variety of king snake.
Orcas a.k.a Killer Whales cause no animal messes with them.
I would love to hand raise one of these so bad. They’re so interesting and gorgeous! Making their own bioactive enclosure would be SO FUN
I went to Florida recently and got to hold a 2 year old American alligator. At that moment I was absolutely filled with live and amazement for that animal like almost nothing I can remember. When I got to the hotel I started researching crocodilians and which one would be the most practical one to have as my "someday if I'm rich" animal, and I landed on this very creature due to its size and behavior. I've since decided I'll go for more reasonable animals, with a BCI boa as my someday but totally attainable dream pet. But these things are wonderful animals, just not the right pet for me. Clint and team, you all have done wonderful work and helped me hone my childish joy and excitement about a very unreasonable dream animal (a crocodilian) into a real action plan that will hopefully allow me and my kids to enjoy great pet reptiles for decades to come. Love you guys, and thank you.
C S could always get a tegu.. their a pretty reasonable alternative
@@Dewey_Boondye420 I've thought about them too. There are so many awesome critters out there. I can't wait for thr reptile shows to start back up so I can start getting to know the breeders in my area and solidify plans on what to get and when
Saw a young alligator in the wild. Then saw a smaller adult. The coloring and flexibility was wonderful.
@@cs4870highly recommend a monitor as well. Asian water monitors in my experience are so sweet and easy to bond with. I’ve noticed monitors and tortoises are super personable if you socialize and spend time with them enough. I’ve had a monitor lay on my chest tongue-flicking my face, and a sulcata tortoise follow me around the house while I was doing chores. Amazing animals, but harder to manage than something smaller so keep that in mind lmao. They get biiiiig. But they’re not dangerous in the way crocs are.
Clint talking to a baby caiman is the cutest thing EVER.
Kevin is such a down to earth guy. Also just in his presentation as well as all his videos he does for Nerd he is always passionate and always wanting to be assertive when it comes to telling anyone and everyone the way it should and needs to be for the health and survival of said animals. I just respect him and his work so much. Also being I just recently noticed Clint and this channel I see he is on the same path with his passion and care for the animals as well. I wish there was way more people in this world that care about the survival of these animals and wanting to learn more about them then just the stupid "they are an animal that can hurt me" mindset. Cause with that mindset they are willing to hurt an animal that they have no clue of.
I absolutely just adore Clint’s enthusiasm for these beautiful creatures.
You can really tell this beast is on another level compared to pet lizards. Huge, loud breaths in & out.
2:09 I dropped my phone lmfao
Isn't that an exciting moment??

Love Clint's enthusiasm! Lol, it seems like every animal he has on his show is his new favourite animal... in the whole world!
1 out of 5 is still a higher ranking than the homo sapiens in their larval form.
Relatable, and amazing
I would love the energy this croc would add to my house. This "survival of the fittest" vibe would be nice. Imagine going downstairs in the morning and entering your croc room for a bit before going to work.
My first impression: OMG THATS SO CUTE
My middle inpression: Okay. They need much respect.
My last impressions: Its a great baby! But needs much care love and above all, respect.
I absolutely love how you will say a reptile is your absolute favorite on Earth. Clint I feel safe to say every reptile on the planet is your favorite reptile. That's what makes you so delicious and amazing to watch. You are this generation is mr. Rogers with snakes. Your Enthusiasm and your passion for what you do is contagious. I've never watched somebody like you before. This quarantine is help me really find some amazing stuff on RUclips. I never knew. I thought this was place for people did videos of stupid things and then posted them online. I have since learned it is a fabulous place to go to learn about any single thing you want to learn about. You are in my top three favorite channels and I shall continue to enjoy you as long as you have a program. You've gotten me interested in reptiles. The tarantula people have me interested in tarantulas. You've talked me into getting a pair of jumping spiders because I fell in love with Lucas. I've just had such an awareness of other things since being locked into quarantine like we are. I want to own a reptile. I want a Tagu lizard. I want one like Gus Gus. I've been watching Tyler Nolan and I want an iguana like the pair that he has. I can't remember their name but they're huge. Rhinoceros iguana I think? whatever they are there black and they're huge and he's named them Khaleesi and Drogo from Game of Thrones. The female is so affectionate just like Gus Gus. The mail not so much but they really do love Tyler. He has an amazing collection of animals like you do. Okay well that's it for my comments. Thank you for helping people get through these trying times. the children in this world are very lucky to have you teach them. Your children are very lucky to have a dad like you. And I'm pretty sure you're going to say you're the lucky one. anyone that knows you and yours is lucky.

The Cuvier's Dwarf Caiman and the Western Dwarf Crocodile are my favourite crocodilians because they seem to be the most terrestrial and look so much like small Kaprosuchus.
You should leave the score in the thumbnail like your older videos, it is easier to compare and find the right pet reptile. Besides that, your videos are very helpful

@@ClintsReptiles still planning something like that?
The title worried me for a second there XD glad you clarified they definitely do not make good pets!
When talking about whether it is the coolest animals you mentioned how dinosaurs looked less cool - have you ever looked into pseudosuchia? It's the sister group to dinosaurs, and as the last living dinosaurs are called 'birds' the last living pseudosuchians are called 'crocodiles' - pseudosuchia is a huge group of fantastic looking animals all related to living crocodiles, some of my favourites are:
-Arizonasaurus (a sail-backed crocodile)
-Poposaurus (bipedal crocodile)
-Desmatosuchus (an aetosaur - a very heavily armoured crocodile)
-Kaprosuchus (a crocodile with more horns)
-Dakosaurus (a sea monster crocodile)
-Postosuchus (was believed to be a heavily built land croc, now considered to be bipedal)
-Araripesuchus (one of the land crocs, has a lot of good artwork)
NERD’s socialization regimen is amazing. Such cool animals but definitely terrible pets.
That's awesome definitely hands down my favorite reptile as well.love how informational and positive your videos are a big thank you for this one

That's probably a good thing.
2:08 Not gonna lie I jumped out of my chair with my heart fucking pounding lmao. The fact that I was just staring at it in complete silence didn't help very much...
I love how this series has evolved from "Do you want a reptile? I'll show you some options and help you decide which reptile is right for you!" to "Let's see how bad of a pet this reptile makes!"
@2:06 the combination of that startling moment with the immediate transition to a smaller sized ambassador had me rolling with laughter.

Kevin has a cool vibe and what he does with animals is incredible.
Hahaha. Did not expect the growl... There's coffee all over my couch now 😶
Good morning!
That breathing noise is very comforting. Like a cat purring.
First of all, I love your clear and obvious passion for animals! It's amazing!! Did Kevin mention to you if the adult caiman with the deformed mandibles was a rescue? That sort of deformity typically results from poor diet, namely lack of calcium from never feeding whole prey items, and I know NERD takes better care of their animals than that.
i love how there was a slight change in his volume when he talked when he swapped between the adult and the baby is funny cause of how the adult’s bite is much worse than the baby’s
It would be so cool if the Dwarf Caiman had the temperament of an American Alligator or American Crocodile. I'm not sure if that would make them moderately good pets necessarily but those little suckers are so feisty and it would make them somewhat better.
Or better yet, a Dwarf Caiman with the temperament of Gusgus!
The pure excitement you have on your videos just proves to me that you actually care for these creatures and you are having fun
