To be fair, the lego models sort of get an excuse for being harder to make. Like, you have to really think about what pieces go together properly to end up coming out looking like these animals, and the result isn't always going to be perfect. Of course they still could've done better with some of these, like the shark fins that Clint put on "backwards". He shouldn't have needed to put them on "backwords" because they should've been in that direction to begin with. But overall, designing lego builds for animals has to be a lot more challenging than doing a little bit of research and creating battle stories for animals.
No artificial colour can truly match that of a kingfisher. Like some hummingbirds, bee-eaters, sunbirds and others, they're iridescent. Their feathers refract light like a prism. Lego has a lot of logistical reasons for colour choices sometimes. The colours used in one set are often influenced by other sets in production, so if there's not enough other sets that require those pieces in orange, they might just chose another colour instead of starting a new production run of that piece in that colour, as that's an extra cost to add to production. Their Creator series Tiger, on the other hand, has the first LEGO set with an anus!
Orange or red-orange for the feet would’ve required 3 recolored pieces, but the cattle horns and bar holders with clips already are produced in red, so then the only recolor would’ve been the t-piece, and they had to recolor that anyway to get tan. I wonder if they have some upcoming sets that use the t-piece in tan, and that was the reason/compromise? Or if someone decided that Lego tan was closer than Lego red for the kingfisher feet? (I don’t see it, but maybe someone would think that.) Or if they just goofed?
I bit over 20 years ago, my spouse and I bought a small existing bookstore. In February of this year, we closed the store and retired. A friend of mine commemorated the event by giving me a Lego Kingfisher set. I haven't put it together yet, due to the upheaval of trying to rehouse the accumulated flotsam of a nearly 3000 square foot business, but I was happy to see that you consider it to be fairly accurate. I assume the Kingfisher's feet are tan because of limitations with those specific molds, as Lego only makes some pieces in certain colours, which and certain colours only in certain factories
Fun Elytra Fact! The Minecraft community has a major feud about how to pronounce the word Elytra. A camp defends their pronounciation by claiming that biologists pronounce it their way. Now I've asked my local biologists but they're wormheads and otter people, and Dutch, so not very much help. So I'm oh so very glad Clint unwittingly sides with the OBJECTIVELY CORRECT way of pronouncing Elytra. Today marks a great day in the history of Pointless-Discussions-About-Something-Very-Niche-Which-Nobody-Actually-Cares-About-But-Which-Are-Incredibily-Fun-Nonetheless!
I, too, have been a LEGO nerd for most of life. And I just started watching your content recently, and I've been loving every second of it. You pointing out the anatomical accuracies of these models gave me a new appreciation for them (my brother owns the butterfly/beetle/mantis set). So, in short, I would LOVE to see more LEGO videos!!
I love animals. I love lego. I love enthusiastic science communication and I always appreciate thoughtful artistic technical critique with an eye for field-specific detatails. I also use "Rad" a lot! Needless to say, finding this channel today has been a treat and a blessing.
It's official. Clint can geek out about literally anything and I'll be here for it. I didn't think I'd be interested in a Lego video, but this was so great
My guess for the Sauropods is that some or all of their Airsacs in the neck helped pump the blood to the brain. Also would love to see more Lego Videos. Get that sponsorship.
Clint, Lego partnering with you would be brilliant for them, for you, for us..aaand for all those kids that have yet to discover Clint's Reptiles! Lego- make it happen! I want to see these kits at my local zoo!
countershading also has another benefit when seen from side-on-- it obscures the shadows which the creature casts on its own body making it all appear to be one uniform color (i.e. the dark part in bright light and the bright part in low light are perceived as the same color to the eye). This makes its overall shape more difficult to discern.
I love this! I used to work as an artist (for a separate company) at Legoland in California, and always loved making spaceships out of LEGO. I gotta get my hands on some of these animal kits! (ROR sponsored?? Heck yeah!!)
LOVE IT!!! MORE PLEASE!!! Also, I too emailed Lego after I saw the insect set and asked it they had any plans to do a reptile set. Since reptile keeping has a large following and I would imagine that the cross over between Lego fans and reptile keepers is fairly large. The response I got was "they can not talk about future sets." So, we have a chance. Maybe if MORE people email Lego and ask for reptile sets we will see this come to pass.
I think Lego would be NUTS not to go into collaboration with Clint, Dr. Laidlaw! He brings with him a huge following that's constantly growing! He's a dynamic personality across the Reptile world and beyond. He's known for being honest in his dealings with his fellow man. Lego - don't miss out!
Honestly one of my favorite videos you guys have made in a long time and there's so much extra stuff in the pattern video that I just can't wait for the next lego video!
Was disappointed that there wasn't a headless joke in the praying mantis section of the main part of the video, but then delighted when the best headless lego praying mantis joke possible happened in the blooper.
I think the reason the bottom in the butterfly is not as detailed/realstic is bc these, very much like the art-piece and architecture series legos, are the kind you put on a shelf or in a glass case to be on display from the more "pretty" angle. Which in butterlfies tends to be the upper part of the wings where they have colour, and ofc it's when they've got their wings spread.
Correction: The antlers of moose and Deer *ARE* Alive, at least until they're shed. horns do indeed have a Living Core that *Grows* the dead keratinous horn around it, but Antlers differ in that it isn't Keratin that grows on their surface, but Skin & Fur. You can even see when they near the Yearly shedding period, the Skin & Fur does indeed start to die and peel off, leading up to when the entire bony antler structure breaks off and will eventually start to grow back the following year. but as they're growing, they're entirely and completely alive, Fuzzy, warm to the touch, and completely full of Blood, which circulates throughout the Antler to keep it growing. The only reason some deer/moose/Cervid skulls still have antlers is that the animal was likely killed only while the Antlers were still growing or at least just before they began to shed.
I love these sets! More lego anatomical reviews would be so great! I was hoping you would have the t-rex skull fossil set. I've sculpted a few skulls, and I think that set captures some really great detail!
I would absolutely love to see more Lego video in the future. As a major fan of both legos and biology, this was one of the most fun videos I’ve seen in a while. Keep it up Clint!
Re: the backwards dorsal fins on the shark, I had to do a similar thing with a Lego dinosaur set I got as a gift last year. For whatever reason, Lego made the triceratops' forelimbs longer than the hind limbs. It looked so much better, not to mention more accurate, after I switched them around.
@@killdozer7792 I don't think it's a cost issue, though, as fixing the mistake is simply a matter of rotating/repositioning pieces already included in the sets.
Wonderful video. It might be worth approaching Lego for a sponsorship,in future. They do sponsor a lot of educational and scientific content for kids. It would certainly make sense for them to have you review their models.
My university had a canal run alongside it and I spent many a lunchtime sat watching the kingfishers that lived there, definitely one of my top 5 birds! One thing I'd say is you should add baby kingfishers to the list of things who's dislike of kingfishers is justifiable, they're truly horrible parents!
My 5yo was absolutely enraptured by this video! He has asked to rewatch it at least 5 times by now. I love how much we get to learn together about these animals while Lego keeps his attention. I'll be sending an email to Lego so they can get you on payroll ASAP!
Not me thinking Clint made this video specifically so he'd have an excuse to buy more Legos cuz he could write it off as a work expense if he makes more videos like this 😂
The best way I’ve heard someone explain mantis eyes is say you take a bunch of straws and make a circle so the holes are facing out. When you look at it straight on your seeing into the ball and straight through but you can’t see through the other straws until you move.
13:32, oh wow I have that set and didn’t know that one was to scale!! What a huge insect! I really liked that you get an extra one of those mantis pistol feet in one of my favorite LEGO colors Sand Green.
I don't usually build Lego sets, but I do have model kits. And just listening to the part that you said about how the giraffe set replicate the drinking pose of a real one perfectly, I just feel soooooo satisfied
I appreciate the long giraffe segment at the start, they're my favorite animal. And I might need to look for this lego set, Lego has been releasing some beautiful sets in the past few years.
Your noticeable excitement when getting to the mantis is infectious :D I've been eyeing that insect set for a whole now, glad to know it's of good quality.
Using Legos to teach my son about animals has always been a good idea for me. I hope you make more videos with legos (or maybe even other model kit brands or sets like those from National Geographic or Bandai).
Loved this video. Would love to see more Lego content. As a fellow lego nerd this video was so exciting to see pop up in my recommendations, and the sheer enthusiasm absolutely dripping from this video is so noticeable. You’re an excellent presenter. Combining all the little details hidden away in lego sets with analysis of how they translate to the little details of the real animals is such a genius idea. This is probably the best video I’ve watched all week, and probably longer. My only gripe is the use of the “legos” instead of “lego” xD. Thanks for the great content! Would love to see you cover the new fox 3 in 1 set as well as the gazelle alternate model for the giraffe! We’ve been getting spoiled lately with so many amazing animal Lego builds, it feels like the quality has exploded leaps and bounds above what was the case even only a few years ago, especially regarding the 3 in 1 sets (as can be proven by the shark build that you were not a fan of since that is a set that was released in 2019).
I'm taking an anthropology course right now and the convergent evolution shout with giraffe manes immediately made me go "oh yeah, opposable thumbs, I gotcha." (btw this course is making me seriously consider a double-major in anthro; current major is history ed)
I was in the middle of building the Kingfisher when you mentioned this video in another one. And while I'm a botanist, the eyes bugged me in the picture on the box too! So glad to have seen your solution for that issue, will apply it when I'm at that step!
I love how that gray-green snake you hold in the middle of the video tries to get away to the left side of the screen every shot and at the next cut it’s been reeled all the way back in

I caved and got the set last week, and all the bugs are so beautiful. The mantis is my surprise fave!
I really find your enthusiasm for all living things infectious. I've been watching a few years now, and even though reptiles and insects don't appeal to me as pets, I really enjoy learning about them and appreciating their beauty more than I used to!
Literally this ^^^
WOW, Clint is into Lego too?! I wouldn't have thought Clint could be even more cool but here he goes again. Love the video, keep up the good work Clint ❤!
Fascinating video! Other sets you could feature:
31154 Forest Animals: Red Fox
31129 Majestic Tiger
76391 Hogwarts Icons (with enormous Hedwig snowy owl)
910017 Kakapo
76414 Expecto Patronum (big blue Stag and Wolf builds)
31157 Exotic Peacock
I assume the Kingfisher's feet are tan because of limitations with those specific molds, as Lego only makes some pieces in certain colours, which and certain colours only in certain factories
The best part about that giraffe set is the creator made VERY solid Lion and Antelope alternate builds.
it's a praying mantis with revolvers for feet, crowbars for antennae, and swords for hands.
What is the other way?
@@2_Oldthe other way I've heard it pronounced is E-lee-tra
@@vulkendov5210aaaaaah!!! That's just gruesome😣
TIL. I’ve been pronouncing it wrong my whole life. I’ve always pronounced it “eh-LY-truh”
@@2_OldAccording to Wikipedia, the correct way is “EL-ih-truh.” I’ve always pronounced it the way Clint does.
Theres two little grubs underneath the log the Hercules Beetle stands on. I love that detail bc it's completely hidden but so CUTE.
If that giraffe wasn't as expensive as a real one, it would be the best Lego set of the last decade.
“The head comes off easily”, meanwhile, female praying mantis are like “what’s the problem?”
Clint’s going to be happy if he ever makes the Lego tiger model.
No ifs, ands, although maybe one but…
Because of that Tiger, my kids now check every new animal set to see if it also has an anatomically correct butt 😂
Your sly snarkiness as you said "holding a bar of pure silver"... I see you Clint 😉
😁
I think Lego would be NUTS not to go into collaboration with Clint, Dr. Laidlaw!
He brings with him a huge following that's constantly growing!
He's a dynamic personality across the Reptile world and beyond.
He's known for being honest in his dealings with his fellow man.
Lego - don't miss out!
Honestly one of my favorite videos you guys have made in a long time and there's so much extra stuff in the pattern video that I just can't wait for the next lego video!
It's pretty ironic that I'm watching educational videos about zoology, while taking a break from studying for my invertebrate zoology final
"I had to use my zooligist skills to even identify that this is a shark" is one hell of a burn
Clint talking about legos is something I never thought id see, and never knew I needed
You literally hit on all of my favorite things through your videos. Birds, fish, legos, dinosaurs, and general animal knowledge. Top tier!
We need the tiger set for… reasons. I wanna see Clint’s reactions to… the… detail
I'll write a fantasy book about super dwarfs and won't mention that they are snakes until the very end.
Lol
Correction:
The antlers of moose and Deer *ARE* Alive, at least until they're shed. horns do indeed have a Living Core that *Grows* the dead keratinous horn around it, but Antlers differ in that it isn't Keratin that grows on their surface, but Skin & Fur.
Clint, at this rate you might be able to get fans to design some of the coolest Lego models ever
To be fair, the shark and dinosaur set are a lot cheaper than some of the other sets, sooooo....
@@killdozer7792 I don't think it's a cost issue, though, as fixing the mistake is simply a matter of rotating/repositioning pieces already included in the sets.
I absolutely love hearing him geek out. You can tell he’s having a blast.
Wonderful video. It might be worth approaching Lego for a sponsorship,in future. They do sponsor a lot of educational and scientific content for kids. It would certainly make sense for them to have you review their models.
Clint doing legos is something I never knew I needed
Also if you like these you may also like the Lego tiger model that has a certain realistic feature that it has become known for.
Thanks for giving me the answer about beetles legs, I swear that gave me a headache when I first learnt basic insects anatomy for art.
Next video.. Giraffe… the best PET?
keen to understand the handleability
My university had a canal run alongside it and I spent many a lunchtime sat watching the kingfishers that lived there, definitely one of my top 5 birds!
One thing I'd say is you should add baby kingfishers to the list of things who's dislike of kingfishers is justifiable, they're truly horrible parents!
never fails to brighten my weekend when Clint uploads! always worth the wait!
My 5yo was absolutely enraptured by this video! He has asked to rewatch it at least 5 times by now. I love how much we get to learn together about these animals while Lego keeps his attention. I'll be sending an email to Lego so they can get you on payroll ASAP!
Not me thinking Clint made this video specifically so he'd have an excuse to buy more Legos cuz he could write it off as a work expense if he makes more videos like this 😂
🤫
@@ClintsReptiles I'm kind of thinking that praying mantis was probably meant to be a boy because the head comes off so easily
When I was a kid Legos were inexpensive. Now the cost of the giraffe could feed a starving child for six months.
I appreciate the long giraffe segment at the start, they're my favorite animal.
And I might need to look for this lego set, Lego has been releasing some beautiful sets in the past few years.
Thank you for more excuses to buy Lego!
Looking forward to "Giraffe, The Best Pet Mammal?" 🤣
Your noticeable excitement when getting to the mantis is infectious :D I've been eyeing that insect set for a whole now, glad to know it's of good quality.
Using Legos to teach my son about animals has always been a good idea for me.
I hope you make more videos with legos (or maybe even other model kit brands or sets like those from National Geographic or Bandai).
I definitely didn’t expect this, but I’m loving these kinds of reaction videos! Keep it up!
I love how enthusiastic you are. Your enthusiasm is infectious.
Yeah,do more. Also nice to see a reptile advertisement rather than gross cereal.
Love to see someone nerd out about science AND hobbies combined
Clint telling fun facts while reviewing a lego set is great! I would love to see more of the lego animal models covered!
As a Lego enthusiast wildlife ecologist, I agree with all of your statements.
I love how that gray-green snake you hold in the middle of the video tries to get away to the left side of the screen every shot and at the next cut it’s been reeled all the way back in
I love that the Unguligrade demonstration is a freeze-frame of you jumping
