Say hello to my new series of videos... STANDARDS! Yup, that's it, me playing unaccompanied standards. These stripped down performances are perfect to really digging into the phrasing and dynamics that I am using to shape the phrase. Notice how all of the notes swell in and out of the direction the lines go, and how the notes effortlessly land on the goal notes. The idea behind this series is to make it easier to hear what's going on with playing a simple melody.
The tune is My Romance played in the key of C concert (A on the alto, D on the tenor). The entire song goes up and down in diatonic scale degrees. This is a great and easy one to add into your reptertoire.

You're sound is really good. Thank you Scott for all you do for us who wants to get better at playing saxophones. Can we hear you play the Tenor or Soprano?
Thanks! I definitely need to get those horns out more on the videos.
Yeah I agree Michael, I will someday try a different horn and hearing scott play something different would be an inspiration in that direction I’m sure. Thanks scott and keep up the good work, inspiring!
Nice job Scott!! One of my favorite Standards, I love your dynamics and phrasing. Ialso love Michael Brecker's version at the end of Carly Simon My Romance concert. Thanks for your passion and love of music.
Brecker is my all time favorite sax player!
I like it, it s really this new standard series, very useful tuto, i
tried to repeat some of your phrases with my tenor sax. In another
style, could you create a new series teaching some well known jazz
standard with their fundamentals. I like Mercy mercy mercy. Cheers, Pat.
Yes, I'm going to be doing an online sax school and that is going to be a big part of it.
@@ScottPaddock excellent news then. Expecting this school, maybe you could share with us one std you choose, just to give us appetit;). Thanks for all your good job.
WONDERFUL!!!! JUST WONDERFUL!!! I REALLY NEED TO WORK ON THAT KINDA ROMANCE STYLE U KNOW😅 KEEP IT UP SCOTT!!!!!!
Thank you!
Lovely. Can you revisit In a Sentimental Mood in full at some point too? Thanks
👍👍
So good 👍
Thanks Regan!
So soft and smooth, but still that special sound I like so much! Thank you Scott! That is so beautiful! 😍😍🎷
My sheet music for "My Romance" is written in G major (but it doesn't matter, it can be transposed). I can hear these changes in the dynamic and it makes such a big difference!!!
But you also changed the note values a little bit in a few bars, or? If I heard that right...?
Hey Stefanie! People usually play My Romance in either Bb (G on alto) or C (A on alto). I like the way A sits better on my horn. Yeah, dynamics, articulation and ad libbing make all of the difference when playing a standard.
@@ScottPaddock Thanks ☀
What program do you use for recording audio I need to find a good one, abelton isnt working for me
I use Reason.
What microphone are you using here?
For these videos I use a clip on Shure Beta 98
