Have to confess, as a boring person, I actually like the 'non-event' interior of the X5! It all looks well laid out ergonomically and easy to use. Very well built too. Much prefer it to the glossy, all screens dash of the equivalent Merc. That's just me anyway.
Great and true comment. I think BMW has become (mostly) the understated and classier choice vs Mercedes….I used to find Mercedes more appealing but in recent years the styling and interiors and even how they drive have gotten a bit much. Signed, boring introvert
Range Rover is the most boring interior there is, Benz interior isn’t no better. What is he talking about 🤦🏾♂️. BMW has the better interior of the lot. Which one of them have seats with lumbar support. All Range Rover has in a screen and ugly fat flats seats. Benz all they have are those big ugly circular air vents and a screen . Audi has all these lines and buttons that just screen 1980’s Atari console.
Still looks fresh and current. Not seen many of the independent pharmaceutical reps, driving these, usual it's the older models, or a clapped out first generation Range Rover Sport.
I have a 2018 X5 since new. It is beyond question, the best car I have ever owned since my first car in 1961. It is so smooth and on German Dunlop Tyres it is so quiet. The straight 6 cylinder 3.0 L Diesel engine is fantastic and extremely quiet. In Eco mode I have had 43MPG and 30 around town. It grips the road beautifully thanks to the wide tyres. I just cant think of being in another car. My last car was an E-Class Merc but it could not compete with this one. It is the kind of car you just want to keep driving as the build quality is second to none, and you feel so safe in it.
I remember my old boss way back in 1998 driving a BMW and I loved the fact the centre dashboard/console was blatantly directed at him, like a cockpit whereby me, a passenger had no right/need to get involved with any of the functions/controls.......he was the driver. Wish they still did that.
Really wanted to own an RRS and i love how everything wrapped around you as a driver. However fear of crankshaft snapping on the PSA engine swayed me to X5 for the reliability and to me it was the next best one. I driven an SE one (unless it was the model I driven) and the ride is crashy. I would highly recommend one with the dynamic suspension as it removes that crashesines. 7 seaters gets air suspension at the back but the airbags are not much more expensive then usual coils and not hard to change at all so dont let that put you off. I agree with 30d is being the all the car you need as its really quick and really fun in sport mode (i own one) also has the same 0 to 60 figures as the RRS (i was sad enough to look it up). I dont think the early 25d anymore fuel efficient than the 30d. However 16 or 66 plates onwards the 25d been switched from twin turbo N47 to Twin Turbo B47 which is producing 231 bhp instead of the 218. This is more fuel efficient and cheaper to tax if you are really after efficiency. I personally think the best one would of been the 40d if you want bit more extra grunt as the fuel efficiency and road tax is identical to the 30d. Matt I hope you dont mind me putting this essay on here thought it might help someone who is after an X5

Funny how opinions can differ, mine is the opposite, I think the mk1 was the best looking and most original SUV design of its time even if it's based on a range Rover template. The fact it was the best SUV for the road of its time, but still had the capability there, was a pretty big deal
yeah, definitely no, on design. Ask a woman, bcuz most (and most non women as well) will explain that the second gen is droopy/frumpy. Mercedes has run into this issue in later years as well, as have a few other models of various brands. And it affects sales, trust me!
Hi, I had a 2017 sdrive 2.0 diesel for 2 years. I was unsure to begin with as its 2 wheel drive but I can assure anyone looking to buy that you have nothing to worry about. It handles great, fuel economy I averaged about 42mpg, 0-60 is only about 0.2 seconds slower than the xdrive. With good tyres on with plenty of tread I had no issues in the snow either. I did 36,000 miles in it with zero issues. Great all round car
My favorite part of the X5 is the rear. I've always been attracted to that design since the first X5. It's the transportation of choice for people that live in Long Island NY. In Queens NY, it's the X6, I guess my neighbors like the coupe design.
I’ve owned and driven an X5 F15 M for three years now. It’s been a great all rounder and can’t really fault the vehicle. Recently considered changing and couldn’t justify it to myself for the changeover cost. The latest generation X5 now commands a ridiculous amount of money.
Cars are totally over priced. Thats why sales are sinking..they are selling an SUV with average diesel engine at the price of a ferrari of a few years ago. They will fail one after the other or be purchased by chinese manufacturers
I have recently bought this car. It was the 30d version. I was looking for the 50d but couldn’t find one. So I decided to get it remapped and what a difference in performance and the actual driving. After the remap it went to 337bhp and it would have been more if I wasn’t running 22” wheels.
I had a 2015 BMW X5M and it was the most incredible SUV I have driven….I had it tuned by a UK tuner and it cranked out 650 JP and did 0-60 in about 3.7 seconds….great fun, decent value and was very reliable…

That is a very very good presentation 👏 but I will definitely recommend the 3l petrol much better more durable, I know less fuel consumption but you get better engine noise and better performance 😀
This engine with 255 hp is all you need. My f30 16 plate is with it and it is just faultless. Will definitely follow your advice regarding the zdf gearbox though as I am getting closer to 80k. Guess what the main dealer said when I rang them - the gearbox doesn't need service! Love the content keep it up!
I’ve also been told by mechanic mates that modern gearboxes don’t need servicing either. Apparently they are designed to last the life of the car and shouldn’t be opened up unless you really need to.
@@coops1964 Unfortunately they do. The merc is using zdf gear box as well and it needs service every 60k my garage said. My Russian neighbours had one in Russia. First thing they did when they arrived here ( after slumming it in an Opel station wagon for a couple of months, was buy a BMW X5. She wanted two, but he drew the line. I see a few old Twingos in my area in Prague, and they look retro cool. I remember them from Spanish sun holidays 25 years ago.
I just bought a top spec 2018 X5 M50D 80k miles (but the car looks mint!). Just made sense over a RRS or Cayenne. I spent hours considering and searching all. Will let you know how it goes!
I had the mk 1 3.0 sport with full sport body kit ! Now my oldest son still has it on a 02 reg! Now after your recommendation last year i have a facelift 2010 range rover sport and love that too more than the x5
I didn't want to like this car....but I warmed to it. I think it is very stylish and I actually liked the understated interior. Like most I would rather have the Range Rover Sport too but there are plenty of X5 fans out there and I can definitely see why.
Great car. Great review. Personally, I prefer 50d, so that I can speed away from xtinction rebels,....and my friends children. I don't want the former smoking weed in my Beemer and the latter spilling Coca-Cola on my cream leather.
Yea it makes sence that it is wide, heavy, tall and... HEAVY so it will wear down tires much quickly to a renault clio but its 1 of the things you have to deal with given the size of the car, but for me the old e53 is all car you would ever need to daily drive, i just love the style and love everything about the 1st gen x5, e70 and now f15 i do respect and im aware of them but for me its the e53. Thanks for the metric conversion for the fuel consum.
Saw 3 of them parked up round the corner from me recently, thought it was some enthusiasts having a meet. Then I realised every car had 4 occupants with balaclavas, ballistic vests and HK G36 carbines. Think they were too busy for a chat so I left them alone!
I love these x5 but what put me off I saw to many in are garage with electrical problems the garage I worked for used them for customers who needed a vehicle while there's was being repaired and the woman loved
The F15 really is where they got everything right with the design of the X5, I feel. I recently picked up a late F85 X5 M and hands down, it is all around the perfect package for someone like me who only has one car and needs it to really do everything. It does. It’s a brilliant vehicle. My first BMW, but it comes in a long line of performance cars and tourers. Charger, Vettes, Stinger GT2, etc. I considered an SRT Grand Cherokee of the same year, but when I could get a 30k mi used X5 M with for the same price AND an named exclusion-only service contract, it was a no brainer. B&O audio, leather wrapped everything, and that excellent updated S63. It really does feel like an M5 in SUV form and out of a couple dozen cars I’ve owned over my driving career, it’s by far my favorite. I’ll hate to see it go when that service plan is up 😉
Re servicing costs, I found during the last 5 years of owning my 2008 E39, the main dealer service rates (under their Value scheme for older cars) were cheaper than an indy, and you got the BMW stamp in the book to boot. ;-)
Mate your selection of vehicles is impeccable! This was on my list....toying on a m40d/50d or a 2018 Audi S5 sportback. Let’s get that on the channel please boss!
Thank you for video. X5 comes across as a good all-rounder. I am currently considering a BMW x6, BMW, X5 , a Porsche Cayenne a Disco 4 and a RR Sport. Having escaped uninjured from an horrific crash in my RR Sport, my feeling is to go for another RRSport or Vogue, however the offerings on market atm are over priced high mileage and grubby . I know it is only to be my 3rd car for Country living , nonetheless it is hard to beat the city boy out of a guy who loves country life😂
Love the channel Matt but I have one question - you always mention using premium fuel, I get it with a petrol, octane rating, etc. But I've always thought premium diesel was a con, same cetane rating as the cheaper stuff far as I'm aware, what's the benefit?
I don't know if it's a con or not but I can share my personal experience. Premium has additives . Increase range, car is more responsive ( have you tried to floor a diesel just to get this massive lag and the car is just not accelerating at all? Happen to me in the past with normal diesel) And keep it clean. Never really had turbo lag either. Yes it's more expensive fuel at a time the normal diesel is £1.53+ per litre, but I get 10-15% more range in comparison to normal fuel.
Buy only Shell diesel. My mate has a fleet of fedex vans and goes through 9-10 tons of diesel a month. His bills in replacing engine parts and general costs in running them vans are night and day compared to when he was filling at tescos and the likes
You should, if you travel for work. I can see the X5 in the hands of a sensible, self-made entrepreneur or higher level manager at a housing development company. But before they do, might go have a look at a diesel Macan, or Mercedes SUV diesel counterpart. Thank you, always cool you mention everything important and I sure do enjoy the views of your rolling hills landscape, excellent and much enjoyed Sir👍
I agree with you that RR Sport looks better and has a nicer interior than X5, but its perceived reliability problems has probably helped BMW sales quite a lot! Have to admitt that it has a lot to offer if you want a large SUV or whatever BMW call it!

Matt, we have owned a 2014 BMW X5 M Sport 7 seater from new, it has now done nearly 80,000 miles and has been brilliant. My only watch out is I recently had to replace the electronic handbrake control unit, which cost nearly £800 + vat plus and labour, total cost £1,300. I tried to get a contribution from BMW for what appears to be an incredible amount of money for such a small part, but to date without success. Maybe I was unlucky, but just a watch out, other than that the car has been terrific and still looks the part alongside our newer 4 Series.
Wow the Crown Vic in Manhattan is long gone - like the Jelly Bean Chevy Impalas of the 90’s. I am aging myself now but back in the 80’s when I moved to NY they still had checkers.
Wasn’t really a fan of this gen X5 until after the 2016 q7 came out which looked even more boring. The new shape X5 is in my opinion the best all rounder in its class especially in terms of comfort, build quality and looks
I have an f15 X5 50i which I absolutely love. Like you I prefer the styling of the Range Rover Sport, but here in Australia expect to pay an extra $20k for a comparable one.
We nearly bought an X5 in 2019, but we ended up with a second generation Volvo XC90 Inscription. Imo, the XC90 has the edge, though if you don’t have the Powerpulse, the gear changes are really odd, and it’s revs really high. You should get one on the channel. The XC90 Gen II is a decent car.
Seriously considering an F15 30d just like this next time I swap. Love the look of them. And they hold the same saying as my current F30, if they're good enough for the fuzz they're good enough for me.
I have the 40D it has the economy of a current 2 litre Mazda 3 well to be honest it’s better. With golf GTI acceleration 5.9 0-60. I couldn’t go back to a sedan or hot hatch after this.
Service your BMW every 6500miles or 10000km. They are notorious for timing chain issues when you stick to the dealer recommended extended service intervals. You don't have to do a full big $ service but you MUST at least do an engine oil and filter change.

@@coops1964 Unfortunately they do. The merc is using zdf gear box as well and it needs service every 60k my garage said. My car is getting close to 90k now and it will go for major service next month- Oil all filters gearbox oil and gearbox filter front discs and pads. Not looking forward to the bill which would be best part of 1200£ for everything i reccon but it needs to be done.
Regards the e53, ive just done week in devon in a 3.0d. it did 43mpg on the runs there and back and 37 during the week, unbelievable from such a heavy old bus but the engine is amazing.
What were you doing? Rolling in neutral🤔
@@pupton5525 no, i regularly achieve that, poor mpg on the m57 is nearly always down to stuck main and egr thermostats. Change them both and your mpg rises.
Got a X6 M50d. Brilliant car with a great balance of economy and performance. Had it for a year now and no issues to report. Only thing I hate are the side mirrors especially when having to reverse into my garage. Otherwise a great car all round.
Nothing like seeing one of these blasting past you in full police spec with blue lights flashing and sirens wailing!
You always have to prepare yourself when it’s time to watch this guy.. he’s full of metaphors.. how does he do it, whilst driving, it’s just rolling of his tongue..
So many to even reference , I’m just here rewinding and laughing when I catch another one of the zingers
Thanks!
Woohooo delighted to see a review of a car similar to I bought, mines 2015 f15 30d msport I bought this over similar age if range rover vogue and gle much better in my opinion, love mines to bits, run flats are expensive, other than that superb, another great video mate!
Think the mark ii X5 looks quite cool to be honest 😎 Still, I’d just buy a 5 series.
My fave spec of x5 is the x5m which gives you m5 performance but practicality and space
I personally think the X5 is a very classy SUV. This generation is a lot sleeker looking than that generation of the Audi Q5.
I had the mk 1 3.0 sport with full sport body kit ! Now my oldest son still has it on a 02 reg! Now after your recommendation last year i have a facelift 2010 range rover sport and love that too more than the x5
Thank you I was waiting for this type of video!
I didn't want to like this car....but I warmed to it. I think it is very stylish and I actually liked the understated interior. Like most I would rather have the Range Rover Sport too but there are plenty of X5 fans out there and I can definitely see why.
Couldn't agree more regarding the Diesel X5s
Great car. Great review. Personally, I prefer 50d, so that I can speed away from xtinction rebels,....and my friends children. I don't want the former smoking weed in my Beemer and the latter spilling Coca-Cola on my cream leather.
Waited for this review and jumped right into it once I saw it. Love this and all your other reviews
Thanks! Hope you enjoy it!
@@HighPeakAutos would love review of alpha guilia quadrifiglio
love it
Yes been waiting for this one!! Really want to swap my Disco Sport for one of these
Yea it makes sence that it is wide, heavy, tall and...
The E53 is my favourite too
That is a great video. I do agree that is the best looking x5. Great work again Matt.
I’d save up an extra couple of years and wait till I could afford the fourth generation. They are stunning outside and in
Saw 3 of them parked up round the corner from me recently, thought it was some enthusiasts having a meet. Then I realised every car had 4 occupants with balaclavas, ballistic vests and HK G36 carbines. Think they were too busy for a chat so I left them alone!
🤣
“Have you got the time officer?”
X5 is a great car, ideally in a dark colour and M Sport
I’ll hate to see it go when that service plan is up 😉
Re servicing costs, I found during the last 5 years of owning my 2008 E39, the main dealer service rates (under their Value scheme for older cars) were cheaper than an indy, and you got the BMW stamp in the book to boot. ;-)
There is no 2008 E39 🙄
@@mq46312 oops! My bad. Should have said E91, but I did own a 2001 E39 5 series estate before that. 😉
Mate your selection of vehicles is impeccable! This was on my list....toying on a m40d/50d or a 2018 Audi S5 sportback. Let’s get that on the channel please boss!
Yay! You're doing metric subtitles now. Thank you!!!!
Yet another fantastic one!! My personal chariot is an E70 and I love it!
E53 is the best, my BMW X5 E53 4.8iS V8 is the best used car I've ever owned!
Not my cup of tea carnt stand bmws but great video as usual still waiting to see you do a rx8
I'm hoping to buy one in the next year. Great video 👍
Thanks! They’re very good
Thank you for video.
I know it is only to be my 3rd car for Country living , nonetheless it is hard to beat the city boy out of a guy who loves country life😂
A friend of my father used to have this X5 after having a 5 series GT! But after the X5....... what did he choose? A 6 series GT!! Brilliant
Best ever review so far thank you 👌👍
Love our 2018 F15 30d. Going to be hard pressed to know where to look when it comes to changing it next summer.....
@@svetoslavtodorov2427 £1:53!!!!!
@@coops1964 I know right? Sad ... Nowadays I am happy to find anything under £2 a litre ....
BMW X5 4.6IS, such a mean looking SUV, I think its still to this day the best looking SUV
You should, if you travel for work. I can see the X5 in the hands of a sensible, self-made entrepreneur or higher level manager at a housing development company.
But before they do, might go have a look at a diesel Macan, or Mercedes SUV diesel counterpart. Thank you, always cool you mention everything important and I
sure do enjoy the views of your rolling hills landscape, excellent and much enjoyed Sir👍
Love these reviews! Am hoping this will be my next car. Have a 2014 x3 which i love but would like to try the x5 at some point.
Always check the air con filter in the glove box for bags of sherbet.
One of the few BMWs that looks good from all angles
I agree with you that RR Sport looks better and has a nicer interior than X5, but its perceived reliability problems has probably helped BMW sales quite a lot! Have to admitt that it has a lot to offer if you want a large SUV or whatever BMW call it!
I have been waiting for this I nearly bought one 2months ago but bought something else but am going to look again next week
What did you buy?
@@HighPeakAutos my trader friend was selling his 2016 c class convertible 250d premium plus in white with black roof on the upgraded 19 inch merc alloys so I bought 35,000 miles mint condition, I bought that in June and sold it Saturday,, I did agree a price with my local bmw dealer on a part exchange of there's a 2014 m sport 3, 0d at £22k the next day they put the price up £1500 to cover a years warranty I said no just out of spite, cheers Mark
I had an E70 X5 M Sport 3L and loved it but it went through tyres like filling up the screen wash. In the end had major issues with the DPF and £5k later decided to sell it. They drive superb. Would I have one again ....most definitely
Yes, that's a known fault even on the previous shape X5 / X6 Models
Are you able to get your hands on the Ford B-Max, the most uncool car in the world?
Really can't understand why anyone would give a thumbs down for this video.
Great comprehensive review of a super SUV!
Good timing as I'll be bidding on an '08 3.0 SD tomorrow on BCA #fingerscrossed.
Wow the Crown Vic in Manhattan is long gone - like the Jelly Bean Chevy Impalas of the 90’s. I am aging myself now but back in the 80’s when I moved to NY they still had checkers.
This MK3 BMW X5 is awesome 👌🏾
Excellent as always, oh, and Jazz FM... Nice!
Fantastic video as always, really enjoyed it thank you, that particular X5 has a very ex BMW UK look about it.
Basically no reason to dislike it. There's a reason I love x5s
Gotta love Bluewater! Would've thought that's out of your way Matt
I find the E70 more attractive externally
Hi Matt, another great video "thumbs up"
Cheers for another great video!
Lovely video Matt (as usual).
Thanks
We nearly bought an X5 in 2019, but we ended up with a second generation Volvo XC90 Inscription. Imo, the XC90 has the edge, though if you don’t have the Powerpulse, the gear changes are really odd, and it’s revs really high. You should get one on the channel. The XC90 Gen II is a decent car.
I love the look of those. I’ll have to get one of the channel
Michael how reliable had yours been also what mpg are you getting with it please?
Service your BMW every 6500miles or 10000km. They are notorious for timing chain issues when you stick to the dealer recommended extended service intervals. You don't have to do a full big $ service but you MUST at least do an engine oil and filter change.
