    I love this! I'm half filipino and white, but was raised in a filipino household so I'm very familiar with the food. For the garlic rice; it's better to fry. Make the white rice(like the Asian way! Wash and boil) and once it's cooled down, fry it with oil, salt, and lots of chopped garlic. It'll be dry, yet sticky! For the adobo; I would've added a bay leaf for added flavor and fragrance. I don't add carrots, more just onion and sometimes potato. I don't know much on how to make turon, BUT it's best to use plantains. Less sweeter, but after all the caramelized goodness, it's decadent!! You earned my follow! ❤❤❤

      Wow! I've never even made pancit canton myself. I'm a Filipino born and living here in the Philippines. Thank you for going through all this to try our food and glad you loved most of them. You might wanna check panlasangpinoy for more authentic versions next time. No, it's not my website but I usually go there for recipes. The turon calls for overripe saba which might be difficult to find there....I was concerned the plantains didn't do them justice. Oh and you should wrap the lumpia filling raw not cooked. Like what the Chinese do. Lumpia and pancit are Chinese influence. And you might want to try eating with a spoon and fork next time for a complete vibe. I find it funny you're using a fork and knife. We don't do that here unless we're having steak.
      Btw, great pronunciation of Tagalog words. :) And loved your vlog.

    Just watching you working so hard is enough! Pusong Pinoy (Filipino heart) made Philippines proud, just some corrections…
    we use plantains when we cook them, never bananas because they get mushy/ soggy
    Next is the jackfruit didn’t quite see if you use ripe ones (yellow) or unripe are bit white and they really make huge different.
    Highlight your tapsilog (good pronunciation) looks so legit!!!! I live in Italy would go wherever you are to taste those bad boys 😋🥰

  • @MminaMaclang
    @MminaMaclang 3 года назад +280

    The reason why the jackfruit didnt work for you guys is because on the can you used it says "young green jackfruit", which is used as a meat substitute. We cook it with coconut milk, ginger, and a bit of fish sauce (or soy sauce if vegan). Sometimes we cook it with banana hearts too. Very nice veggie dish that can be a main or a side, and the young green jackfruit when cooked has a meaty pork-or-tuna-like texture to it.
    For desserts, we use ripe jackfruit. You'll know it's ripe because it should be a bright yellow and very fragrant.
    The banana that we use for cooking is also very specific! It's called Saba. Im not so sure western countries import that kind of banana. It has a slightly tarter, sweeter flavor and a creamier texture than your typical cavendish, so it is perfect when cooked as turon, or even just boiled or fried.

    • @marilorjustine

      @@marilorjustine I know Plantains are typically available in North America because it's imported from South America. But I think she's in the UK! Regarding the garlic cubes: korean food uses a lot of minced garlic so what my mom does is just peel a whole bunch of garlic one day and just pulse it in a food processor. Then she puts it in a zip lock baggie and flattens it so it's a thin layer and freezes it so it's easy to break off when needed in a recipe ! Ive also seen it put in like ice trays to freeze to make little cubes as well. Such a good life hack!!

    Great job! Our food is usually on the salty side because it goes well with the bland boiled rice or a dipping sauce suvh as vinegar or a drizzle of lemon/ calamansi such as in your pancit noodles. We use different type of banana that isn’t too ripe which is a bit firmer and less sweet. The sweetness will come from the sugar and the ripe jackfruit. But overall two thumbs up!
    Tip: overnight leftover adobo is best shredded and deboned then lightly fried on its own oil after allowing the sauce to soak in the meat and reduced until only the oil is left, over low fire. Then eat this with egg and garlic rice for breakfast instead of the beef. Its gonna be a bomb, trust me! Adobo flakes can alao be put in between your pandesal for breakfast as a substitute for rice.

  • @lnc8186
    @lnc8186 3 года назад +345

    When you make lumpia and you’re cooking the fillings, make sure you cool it off first before wrapping them in the wrapper or the wrapper will tear. Wrap them a little bit tighter next time as well.
    For the turon, you need to use ripe, cooking bananas like the Filipino saba or ripe plantain. Use the ripe, yellow jackfruit and not the green one. That’s used as a vegetable, usually with coconut milk that’s why that turon didn’t come out right nor taste good.
    For the pancit, sautee all the meat (that’s been boiled beforehand, saving the broth) and vegetables first, take them out of the pan once they’re cooked and set aside so they won’t get soggy from too much sautéing and mixing. Cook the rice or egg noodles next with a little bit more oil and the broth from the boiled meat. Once the noodles are cooked, turn off the heat and return the meat and veges to the pan, mix altogether, and serve with fish sauce and lemon. The noodles can be found in the Asian market. Your pancit looked a little soggy because you used the wrong noodles.
    I’m not sure where you got the recipe for adobo with veges but we don’t usually add veges to our adobo. You may marinate the meat first, overnight if you like but not necessary due to slow cooking under low heat or fire. To cook the next day, fry the meat first in a little bit of oil, then add the marinade sauce and cook on low fire until the meat is tender. Don’t stir until the vinegar smell is gone and the sauce is reduced to almost dry or you can leave a little sauce if you want. Don’t forget to add bay leaves when you cook the adobo as well. When you serve the adobo, there shouldn’t be a strong vinegar smell but a blend of smells and flavors. The ratio for your sauce should be 1/2 cup soy sauce (or 1/4 cup if you use Filipino Silver Swan soy sauce cuz it’s too salty), 1/2 cup water, and 1/4 cup vinegar. I use Japanese vinegar called Mirin rice vinegar because it has a little sugar which makes the adobo taste really good. You could’ve used that pork for adobo as well. Pork is the best meat for adobo esp if it has fat.
    Overall, you did pretty well for a novice “Filipino” cook. 😉

    thats a nice turon... I always cook turon for dessert... putting sugar in the oil is actually right... it will caramelized in the rice paper very well...
    1. lay down the rice paper
    2. put the banana and ripe jackfruit
    3. put sugar on them at least 1 tablespoon and spread the sugar.
    4. roll the rice paper
    5. deep fry it until the rolls are golden brown and coated in sugar.
    the caramelized sugar outside the turon gives it its quite bitter and sweet taste.
