Join us as we spend the next two months making fun of some of the best bad acting ever committed to a video game. We'll be looking at crummy full-motion video games, overhead shooters, survival horror and even light gun shooters. All in an attempt to honor some of the hammiest acting you've ever heard.
Today marks the penultimate episode for the season. We're celebrating with a personal favorite of mine -- Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. While there's no denying the game's greatness, it's certainly hard to defend the voice acting. Also worth noting is the quality of recording, which sounds like it was done in a tin can. well.. his acting in that scene was better than any of the other ones in that video.. cheesy sure.. but the voiceactor was just a man.. and we all know a man is just a miserable pile of secrets!

@@grugonk The point was that Alucard shouldn't emote to show his vampire side, but he needed to have some slips here and there to show his humanity, like with his mother and in the end against Dracula. So his lack of emotion actually fits the script, I give you that the problem is mostly that the moments he needed to be emotional, the VA just couldn't.

Alucard had a nice voice actor and some awesome lines. I would almost forgive the game's VA if it weren't for.. "that".

I love the voice acting in this game so much, I love Richter's nasally "Die Monster!" and Drac's over exaggerated "HUUUUMANS"
As well as Richter's badass lines such as "I've come to put an end to this"
"My mother never said such a thing!"
"Go back whence you came! Trouble the soul of my mother no more!"
"You have been doomed ever since you lost the ability to love"
Some Richter lines are absolutely amazing as well

Well that is alittle bit..
The voice acting isnt bad, they are simply reading the lines as delivered. They are doing a good job. There is passion and strong voice work in the lines, the trouble is more with the lines themselves.
I think some of the voice acting is bad, but I do take your point that most were working with a sub-standard script and bad directing. With better material and stronger direction, this same cast probably could have generated something much better.
Darius Batista No, the acting is pretty bad. Dracula may as well have a flashing neon sign on his forehead that says "I'M ACTING!" Richter sounds like a Power Ranger, and I don't think Maria needs explaining.
What is my problem that i really liked to subscenes?
+Damsen me neither, ironically, those who hate on the voice acting are the same who then go on shouting SOTN is the best game ever. Their idolatry has fucked up both their minds and senses and cannot see reality for what it is.
+Damsen by the way, I also gave sotn a chance this year and finished the game with 200,6% a week ago. Great music and visual but not the best gameplay. I'd suggest you to play Castlevania Curse of Darkness for the Ps2, it's such an underrated game, it even improves some of the mechanics from SOTN x10.

The uploader didn't quote the whole sentence, the complete thing should be something like "Ah, sarcasm. For what profit is it to a man, if he gains the world, and loses his own soul? "
I believe that the script wasn't bad, still, he idea wasn't exactly good executed.
Besides, Robert Belgrade's work as Alucard wasn't bad. His voice tone was powerful.

I'm a little disappointed you didn't include Shaft saying HOLY POWERS.
Every single time I saw the unfortunately named Shaft, I laughed. Half the time, the name sounded phallic, and the other half of the time, I thought, "Can you dig it?"

How could not Maria's VA tell the director that the "What do you here?" sounded weird?
I actually liked their acting. While it definitely has some flaws, the way they exaggerates the words gives a theatrical aspect to the encounter much like a stage play. Some people may enjoy Shakespeare or Les Miserables, while here we can enjoy our own Castlevania stage play ! It's cheesy for sure but i enjoy it for what it is and it also adds to the grandiose setting of the game. Plus, it's actually kind of fitting to be acting considering the historical time period the game takes places in.
In comparison, the Dynasty Warriors game acting turned historical badass figures of the warring kingdoms into walking clowns...
I'm a huge fan of bad video game voice acting, so I find all of this incredibly endearing. A lot of its badness comes from the writing and localization. I'm happy that Konami later re-recorded the voices, but I suspect I'll always prefer this original version.

well... "what do you here" is not a sentence I'd use everyday, maybe never... it's just that it's like they try, but not hard anough, the voice acting seems bland, that doesn't make it a bad game, it's my favorite ps game too, but we gotta admit that they are pretty... lame, bad, just unappealing overall

Honestly the voice acting wasn't that bad. I liked it mostly.
Robert Belgrade’s voice solidified Alucard for me. The way David Hayter is to Solid Snake. He talks with apathy. Fits Alucard’s persona of just wanting to get rid of Dracula, not caring about anything else.
I feel like Alucard and Maria have fine and fitting voice actors. Alucard's can be a little hammy (especially no.3) but I blame the script for some of that.

Actually Dracula's and Alucard VA are great. Yeah, Dracula is overly expressive at times, but he did well IMO
I haven't watched all the clip since I'm a new Castlevania player, but let me tell you, Dracula's response to Alucards' "Power of Love" statement was worth it.

The Shepherd line is actually good. Because it philosophically state that since Dracula is dead, Richter's work would be done. But Shaft is alive so the line does kinda have little point. Unless his plans were foiled by Richter's death since the castle collapsed.
Let's be honest that this game voice acting isn't very good. HOWEVER, the first cutscene still give me shivers... Too epicness, even for a bad voice acting...

The terrible voice acting and writing adds to the games charm--it's bad but in an earnest way. And the game is so good that it comes across as an over the top Gothic melodrama b movie and not a shitty experience

That line, with a few alterations, would sound perfect in a Dark Souls game but when over-acted with an American accent, it just sounds so amazingly out of place.

I think the voice acting in this game is great. I just think the 'cheesyness of it' was that they werent too meticulous about it - sounds like some of the voice actors just read the lines being told to use passion without really knowing the context of any of it, so some of the lines sound really unfitting to the games aesthetic and style. Dracula and Alucard's voice in particular are awesome, but Richters sounds superly overly cheesy, especially in the intro dialogue.
But how can you diss the "What is a man? A miserable little pile of secrets!" etc, just how? It sounds like music to my ears!
I love "bad" acting. It's one of the reasons I started a whole series called Great Moments in Bad Acting. I think the acting in this game is pretty goofy, but it's also endearing. It comes from a time when they weren't all that worried about professional voice acting, and I like it for that reason. I certainly meant no disrespect to Symphony of the Night.

That's why there's a re-translation patch for the Japanese version of the game which follows the original Japanese script more closely and retains the original Japanese voiceovers, which, in contrast to the English voices, were actually recorded in a professional recording studio.
The most cringe-worthy performance is at the end, and the writing is partially to blame. Dracula's death scene is ridiculous. He gasps for air, but a vampire wouldn't do that. He quotes from the Bible and even takes the trouble to tell you the chapter and verse. Not at all the behavior one would expect from the Prince of Darkness. Then we learn his wife's name is Lisa. Lisa? This is the best name they could think of for Dracula's wife? Lisa is the name of the girl you went to high school with in the 1980s. It is nowhere near old fashioned sounding and gothic enough for the situation. And I don't know what's worse in the Succubus part--Alucard screaming "Mother!" or well every time the Succubus speaks. Her voice is like nails on a chalkboard.
