I'm posting this on my brother Mark's birthday, so it's also for him. He's a big fan of this song, and it always reminds me of him. Let's just say he went through a bit of a U2 phase.

Liner Notes:
I was lucky enough to be at the Denver U2 concert in 1987 featured in the movie "Rattle and Hum." The "Bad" in Rattle and Hum was from my concert. The wikipedia entry on this song quotes Bono has as saying the lyrics are about a friend of his who had a heroin addiction, but is also about addiction in general, including his own. It's always such a great live song. We based our arrangement on the live "Wide Awake in America" version. Phil said the harmonics at the beginning are borrowed from a later tour rendition. I love the studio version of this, as well. I went with the live version of the lyrics for the most part, but re-inserted "walk away"--he says "break away" twice in the live version, and I view that as probably unintentional.

I look forward to bringing you more remote collaborations with the guys from "Rattle and Hum", a Salt Lake-based U2 tribute band that I met when I lived in SLC. In fact, Phil is a fellow attorney, and if you've been paying attention, you've seen him on other U2 covers on my channel (known as "The Phil") live from the Pie. Phil, Ty, Cam and I performed an acoustic-ish U2 set at the Irish pub "Piper Down" in SLC under the name "Achtung Babies," so this isn't our first time working together. I look forward to our future collaborations.

Bad is probably U2's most underrated gem, imo
Ultraviolet is way more underrated. Not saying better, but this is far more well known than Ultraviolet, So Cruel, Lemon, or A Sort of Homecoming.
Why underrated???...Ask anyone with knowledge..all of them will tell you that "Bad" is the absolute peak of U2! I'm not an expert but i feel the same...

Loved it...just loved it. This was always one of my favorite “live” versions of Bad and you captured it flawlessly.

Nice. Been listening to Bad since 1984 when it was released and i have probably a few hundred versions from the hundreds of live audio U2 concerts i have.
This is one of the best covers iv heard and the lead and bass guitars were on point.

I'm a big fan of what Adam did with his bass, specifically on the album cut. He actually takes the base for a walk... plays some counterpoint when needed. He's actually leading the song. Without it it changes it entirely. The live versions are a different feel - Edge always seams to take over.

Wow I just realized that my friends and I used to stay up all night on Friday and Saturday nights in the 80s watching music videos on Video concert hall and Night Trax. That's when U2 arrived .. Where did the time go ...I guess getting older ain't so bad when we can listen to Mike Masse doing covers on you tube :-)

Bad is my all time favorite song. I have been known to play this song (Live Aid version) over and over for 10 hours or more. Vocal, Edge, and bass parts spot on. Drums need a bit of work in places. Some think U2's Larry isn't a rock drummer, and he probably isn't, he plays drum corps style, with an Irish beat - hard to copy. What makes Bad such a good song? The beat and chords make it easy to slip in segments of other all other songs into the middle of the song, and if one were to list all the song pieces U2 has added to this song live, it would rival your complete song repertoire. Thanks for pulling this off for me.
I respectfully disagree. I think Cameron's drumming was a highlight of this recording.

Mike you are incedible... even Bono cant sing like that anymore. Also liked the delay in your voice. perfectly mixed with the dry signal. One last thing... your guitarist is awsome. The tone and delay is perfect! please tell him there is notes missing in the high parts.. simply tell him when he goes down on the solo... from A to D... he needs to hit 2nd strings 2 times in a row from 14th, 12th fret then open E... same when going up from D to A. need to hit B strings 2 times in a row... 10th, 12th then low open A
