    My father died of cancer & my step Father just went through Kimo and radiation treament. You have a valid point about cancer not being a choice. The point Dr. Drew was making was not that drug rehab is worse than having cancer but that statisticly those diognosed with cancer have a better recovery rate than those who go through drug treatment. Just stats to bring awareness to the amount of people who dont make it though can bring a bit of perspective we might not have had without the comparisen

    I would ne curious to see how Dr. Drew´s synapses, brain cells, dopamine, ect, would react to complete and sudden abstinence from any drug addicted patients.

    why can't I have someone like Dr. Drew, and a rehab group that care about me. I have no one, my husband has abandoned me, turned my children against me, I live in the study and no one talks to me, I've been suffering from childhood abuse, I developed Borderline Personality disorder, drank and started using drugs, pot, then bennies, and cocaine, but stopped mostly, breakdown, hosp. and presc. drugs. 30 years later I'm still on presc.drugs, deep depression, some violence, I HAVE NO ONE, WHY?

    I think its good that Dr Drew and other physicians are finally recognizing drug addiction as a medical/psychiatric condition rather than one of personal willpower. If it was a matter of willpower, of course everyone would stop immediately.

  • @lisquidsnake

    It is a complicated matter, them being on TV. I'm under the impression that most of the clients would go out to use regardless of the cameras and that Dr. Drew's intent was for the cameras to be a deterrent, as if to say "You can't hide your addiction." I'm also still under the impression that this show is very educational and it has motivated me to involve myself in studying the psychology of addiction. Good times though

    doesnt mean you are a bad person. If you ask most heroin addicts, like 90 percent of them would give anything to quit. But they can't which defines addiction. When most addicts get into treatment and get the disease under control they become outsanding members of society. They go out of their way to help other people. They are so greatful to have gotten it under control.

    compulsion isn't a disease, it's a symptom OF the disease. Like i said before, many people who are "addicted" to cigarettes and caffeine are NOT actually addicts. that word gets thrown around a lot and is often miss-used. There are MANY drugs out there that after repeated exposure cause a dependence, but being dependent on a drug does not make you an addict. Addiction requires specific genetics.

  • @airquotesthezombie
    @airquotesthezombie 15 лет назад

    as for sex addiction, many people these days are saying it has all the same properties as chemical addiction. i haven't really looked into it...
    If you HAVE been doing research for months i apologize for calling you stupid in my first post. I also feel strongly about this issue because i am a recovering addict and the disease-model addiction treatment has saved my life...

    I found the "Eyes of Nye" episode about addiction is very interesting and I recommend it since it covers many different views of addiction. It asks many questions and picks apart addiction from different sides so at the end you can make a decision.

    Trying to help and actually helping are two different things. 12step facilitation ranked slightly higher than free AA in effectiveness. AA has about the same effectiveness as no treatment at all, except that those who fail at AA tend to fail more spectacularly. More binge drinking, more rearrests, more deaths.
    Bad treatment is not superior to no treatment. The road paved with good intentions and all that....

  • @Spwnt
    @Spwnt 16 лет назад

    if you watched the show, it said that statistics show that you have a 1 in 10 chance of getting the disease under control when entering rehab.
    You can't relate because you've never been addicted to a substance. Once you have addiction your brain actually tell you that you need this substance to survive. People who quit their drug without getting treatment will, a lot of times commit suicide because of their severe depression if they do not relapse. And just becuase you are an addict

    Of course in traditional disease concepts of addiction emphasis is put on the chemical and personality "shortcomings", while what makes life truly meaningful, like meaningful work or relationships, come second. My "sponsor" during court ordered "treatment" was dependent on anti-depressants for decades.........

  • @blortner
    @blortner 13 лет назад

    @littlekittie1261 It's not realistic to expect people to knock on your door ad babysit you into health. The individual must want to change and then reach out and get the help they need. Statistically speaking, rehabs don't work.
    97% of those completing treatment are drinking and using again within a year of release. I say this from an informed standpoint as a former rehab counselor and as a long-term recovered alcoholic. Clean up your own mess.

  • @BeauJames59
    @BeauJames59 15 лет назад

    Re-read friend. I'm saying the VERY things you need to do to overcome depression, like have meaningful work and relationships is given second place to treating some "disease". RET has proven to be as effective as drugs. I tossed the drugs, got "Feeling Good: The New Mood Therapy", DID the exercises, and fired the counselors and therapists, so can most anyone......

    I feel that Dr. Drew is a good, kind-hearted, intelligent man who truly believes what he's doing is the right thing. However I think he's sorely mistaken about just about everything, due to the fact that he learned about addiction from a medical textbook, written by an ex-doctor who learned about addiction from an OLDER medical textbook, etc etc.
    The problem is when actual addicts try to share their views on addiction/recovery, the doctors say "oh he's just a junkie he doesn't know anything"

    You either have the proprability to be addicted or not depression or excitement doesnt really effect it because its about the same, people use it for coping with depression and then end up abusing, and then the other end uses them to get the ultimate high. The real deciding factor is right in your brain's wiring and thats decided in large part by your genetics. If you have a history of addiction in your family, mental illness as well, you have a higher likelyhood to get addicted than another.

    @Markey0086 I agree with your points.... but drugs aren't probably going to be legalized because private sectors and big corporate banks have been making quite the profit by outlawing drugs. it's a business and it's one of the main reasons why america's economy is at the top of the food chain.

    I was turned off by Dr. Drew around 4-years ago because once a young lady called the show and was clearly depressed and thinking about throwing in the towel. Drew was cold and harsh towards her and said some crap about how she was just trying to get attention, and so he hung up on her and the show went on. After that I never much liked the guy.

    Dr. Drew should not even be mentioned in the same sentence as Phil. Dr.Drew Pinsky actually is a real board certified MD of Internal Medecine/Additcion speacialist and has been helping people for years on his radio show loveline while also doing real work in a hospital while not on the air. All you people who have never heard of him until Celeb Rehab have no idea what your talking about. He genuinley wants to help people, he doesn't need ratings, hes already pretty well off being a Doctor.

    @carlyjenna1618 We have never called alcoholism a disease because, technically speaking, it is not a disease entity. For example, there is no such thing as heart disease. Instead there are many separate heart ailment, or combinations of them. It is something like that with alcoholism. Therefore we did not wish to get in wrong with the medical profession by pronouncing alcoholism a disease entity. CONTINUED

  • @airquotesthezombie
    @airquotesthezombie 15 лет назад

    I think they word "addict" gets thrown around too much and is often confused with "dependent". addiction is a biological process, meaning you have to inherit the disease from a parent who also has the genetic predisposition for addiction. i'm guessing this does not apply to some people who smoke. it also does not apply to some people who become dependent on drugs. Non-addicts will quit when the negative consequences outweigh the positive, an addict will not. that's the definition of addiction

    It is not unusual for addicts to want to be excused from looking at the compounded consequences of years of choosing addiction. And there are plenty of professionals ready to make their name and fortune by excusing them with the pseudo disease label. It is behaviourism, we are fallible, it is mostly caused by forgivable cognitive ignorance. Leave the celebs alone in their addiction, let them be ordinary in their addiction, it is cameras that spread the rot, not celebs.

    @carlyjenna1618 I just want to interject that the same people who don't agree that addiction should be qualified as a disease, also believe that it SHOULDN'T be recognized as a disease by definition. I just think it's makes the word a lot less useful. It's a broader term. Cancer patients didn't have a choice in their "disease" in most cases. I believe in PHYSICAL CHEMICAL DEPENDENCY,A PERSON creates that when starting to abuse something for mental coping reasons, not because a DISEASE compels.

    I would work on putting together some intelligent points, other than "its a choice" yes thats true..but the choices are made because of imbalances and a dependency brought on by their sickness..you obviously never known anyone with an addiction..even though they know they are killing themselves..they cant stop without TREATMENT.that personal inability to stop something inside from killing you..can also be another characteristic of it being a disease.

    @carlyjenna1618 drug addiction is "affected" by self-will. U have to first WANT to break addiction & find the strength to go thru with detox and withstand withdrawal. I do believe drug addiction can be sort of looked at as a disease, and thats because it becomes physical, but Most ppl (most anyway) are not born addicted to drugs or even forced to do drugs in the first place. Sum r depressed, wanna "feel" good, escape reality etc, sum are followers or think its cool. either way 1st times a choice

    if addiction isnt a disease and is just bad choice making then explain to me how lab rats, primates, and insects all have been addicted to things. they have all been studied to have addiction when exposed to certain drugs. well i guess the bees just made bad choices and were weak. or, if you want to get scientific, all animals have a reward section of the brain. its what makes men feel good after sex, its what makes you like something new. it is also what gets rewired after you become an addict.

    @eminem865 I agree its a good show, but duinay2 is right he does ask some dumb questions sometimes. Like when that Rachel chick was telling him she doesnt always buy Janice's crap and that she is sometimes just seeking attention. he's all... "What do u mean" she says it again like in dummy terms... he's all, but What exactly do you mean?? I'm like wtf, Its like having a convo with Keanu Reeves sometimes, U should see him on The 16 and preganant reunion shows, lmao.

    It's difficult finding out how to feel about these "celebs" that are on this show. The way I see it, these people are insanely selfish, don't deserve what they have, and frankly probably not the type of people I would feel comfortable around my kids. But, they are only human. They are where they are not entirely because of themselves, but because of everything else around them. Our culture and our society and our environment allows for it. They need help, so why bash em?

    Wow. It amazes me how hateful & ignorant some of these comments are (pls tell me all the rude comments r mostly written by immature teenagers, who just don't know any better, or have any common human decency). Dr. Drew is seriously trying to help these courageous patients. & yes, some of the things they do on camera r dumb, but believe me (& i don;t care who u r, same for anyone) if u were going thru wds off major narcotics w/cameras in ur face--you'd do stupid stuff, too. TY, Dr Drew.

      You are one dumb person. I have actually been through multiple rehabs. An actor or celebrity, even if they say they can, cannot in any way focus the way they need on their recovery while having to think about how they appear on tv at the same time. Don't sit here and tell me the celebs are capable of just being completely authentic and real in front of the camera. Bull! The type of personality required to be a celeb like most of the ones on the show means they are always acting, a part of them is always on "show". So with that being the truth it's completely irresponsible and down right evil for producers to pay those actors to appear on a tv show while attending drug treatment for a deadly disease. You are one stupid person
