This may be a crazy theory, but I think I might be on to something so let me know what y'all think. I have been watching Messi highlights consistently for the past seven years, and as a result have become a close follower of both Barcelona and the Argentine national team. I believe one of the reasons (there are obviously countless) that Messi has been so good and remains so consistent is his genuine loyalty to his team and their success. Moreso than any athlete I have ever seen he seems to only care about, following his family and health, leading the Argentine National Team to World Cup Glory and leading Barcelona to be the best team in the world. His belief in the importance of the success of the team for Barcelona is first evident in his always unslefish play and how he will likely never leave the club. But also his most in-your-face celebrations are always against the biggest Barcelona-rival, Real Madrid. He loves to play well and beat Madrid because it seems he genuinely dislikes them and wants Barcelona to be successful as a club. Furthermore, I think the recent lack of success in the Champions League keeps him motivated, and therefore, operating at his peak. Secondly, I think this is even moreso evident at the national level, but unfortunately to a fault. Messi is so innately devoted to bringing pride to his national heritage, that instead of using the motivation from the goal of team success he sometimes falters as the pressure is actually unbearable (consider the footage of him pre-match in the 18' World Cup, I have never seen an athlete look more genuinely stressed). Anyway, I think where I am going with this is that in order for Messi to be the Greatest Athlete Ever (which I believe he is, and note that I was a huge fan of all 4-American professional sports leagues + NCCA + Olympics first before discovering soccer) he has to be elite at so many aspects of not just his sport but at maintaining yourself as being the best. So, I think his true, genuine, unwavering team loyalty serves as one of these important, transcendent abilities that all come together to make Messi the top of the top. Lastly, I believe the only other player that rivals him in this particular ability is Kobe Bryant, and remember it was Kobe that said Messi was the greatest athlete he had ever seen.
The thing about Messi that I’ve noticed is how unpredictable he is, he gives passes that seem simply not possible. & he takes himself out of situations that the best solution would be to pass. But he doesn’t, he takes on 3,4,5 defenders & the ball is still glued to his feet. You can’t train this, this is just god given talent
