Those are some tangled roots. Nice the way you are tackling the roots. At least you go straight in and do it. Not being afraid. That is what makes a bonsai master.
@@growclipbonsaiforseniors1951 thanks for watching, Tom! Yeah I’m super excited to see how these develop. After these all recover I’m thinking of experimenting having these all be styled differently from one another. I may try an air layer on one, then wrapping a wet towel to keep on another to encourage aerial roots.
@@DavesBonsai thanks for checking it out! Hopefully they recover well and I didn’t go too crazy on those roots. Those roots probably weren’t touched in many years.
@@DavesBonsai indeed! This was quite the process! Dave, I was working away at these trees for hours … Probably at least 4-5 hours. It was a blast sorting it all out. The magic of editing hopefully made it go by quickly 🤣
Benjamina are some great ficus to work with but the main issue with them are the roots, they grow into potato roots. That's what a ginseng ficus comes from. They grow fat Benjamina roots, chop them off and graft on microcarpa ficus tops. My advice is make sure you keep on top of your root work. As long as you do that you will have no potatoes. 👍🏼 For the top make sure you leave green on the branch when cutting back. Like my pun 😉
@@growclipbonsaiforseniors1951 I was super tempted to try repotting those bulb roots as well, but I decided against it because I’m running out of room in my winter storage area. 😄

@@growclipbonsaiforseniors1951 you are too kind! Yeah I was hesitant to tackle the roots first, but I think it was worth it.
Nice work on the tops. The repotting should give you some nice growth in the spring. Great video, Dave!

Catching up on videos, Dave. Been super busy. Watching now.
@@growclipbonsaiforseniors1951 I can relate to life being busy lately! I hope you like this one. It was a blast to work on these ficus
I like the thrift store pot.
@@growclipbonsaiforseniors1951 me too! It was the only time I’ve ever seen a bonsai pot at the thrift store.
Great video Dave love it mate
@@Bonsaicrazy thanks, Andy! This was probably one of the most complicated repots I’ve done. Hopefully they survive!
Pretty cool man. I hope they thrive for you.
Thanks I appreciate it! So far so good ... no leaves are falling off yet and i'm keeping them well watered. 🤞
I look forward to updates on those.

Those were some thick roots! "Major surgery today" is right!

I love a good pun! Yeah those potato roots are INTENSE! I'll probably check in on those roots once a year.
@dreamingofbonsai every other year will be fine as long as you have plenty of fine roots.
@@bonsaiexpression That makes sense. I'm going to baby these trees for the next few months, hopefully they'll recovery nicely.
I wonder if one of those bulbous roots that you cut off will sprout a top in a different pot?
