  • The Rocky Mountain Railroad Club opens their archives to show you the works of Otto Perry, noted rail photographer of the Rocky Mountain Region. Enjoy long gone Santa Fe passenger trains pulled by mighty steam locomotives and classic diesel types including an Santa Fe-1, FTs, F3s, & PA-2s. All of these diesels are in Warbonnet colors. The Super Chief, the Chief, the El Capitan, the Scout, the Grand Canyon, and the Centennial State trains are featured. Giant wartime 2-8-8-2 steam locomotives are seen in rare scenes on Raton Pass. There's also plenty of classic Santa Fe steam and diesel locomotives powering freight trains to watch and enjoy.

    If you own the DVD you will notice that the disclaimer at the beginning states that the audio is for entertainment purposes only. That said dozens of separate sound clips were used to produce this video.

    When I was a kid, we were crossing the tracks in a prairie area in western Kansas and an eastbound streamliner almost got me. It was an Alco PA set leading an eastbound passenger train at speed. The Alco's were really quiet compared to the EMDs. The engineer had to get on his horn to get our attention.

    Engine at 1:40 is misidentified as "4-8-4 Southbound". 3742 pictured here was a 3700 class 4-8-2 Mountain type.
    4-8-4s were numbered 3751-3785 and 2900-2929
    BTW: 4-8-4s on the AT&SF were officially designated as "Modified Mountain Type".
    Similarly, 4-6-4's were designated as "Modified Pacific Type".

    Looked it up, and the "Blue Goose" was a streamlined 3460 class 4-6-4 hudson, and the 3461 set a world record for a steam engine with a 2227 mile run from LA to Chicago without maintence (only fuel). It's train was a fast mail express.

    The 2900 and 5011 steam classes would not have been built other than the fact that diesel production was limited during WWII...as a matter of fact, the ATSF was one of the first railroads to go "whole hog" on the FT diesel...

    The Santa Fe rr definitely had some incredible steam power for their steam era engine roster, I like the Hudson 4-6-4, Northern 4-8-4, and the Texas 2-10-4 type locomotives as my 3 favorite classes of steam power.

    People took along a reel to reel tape recorder when filming back then. The sound is in fact dubbed now in but that was the only way to have sound and picture.

    Thank you, RMRRC.
    Wish Otto had _followed_ the locomotives as they passed by.
    Just when locomotive is closest and greatest detail visible, it continues out of the frame.
    Is more footage actually of railcars than engines?
    Videographers: Please film black steam locomotives from the SUNNY side and FOLLOW THEM. Cease the "Hollywood" technique of subjects passing out of frame.

    • @johnkristincarmody65

    • @robertgift
      @robertgift 7 лет назад +1

      Kristin Carmody You can see hundreds of all kinds of railcars every day. Nothing special. The locomotive is special. Just when closest and greatest detail is seen, it continues out of frame. Follow the locomotive.
      Then railcars can be filmed - if you want to wastexpen$ive film on them.

    I own a copy of this video, and whilst the footage is ok the sound dubbing is absolutely terrible. About six different sound tracks have been repeatedly used, regardless of loco speed. It makes frustrating viewing. Not recommended.

    • @charleswhitcomb4470
      @charleswhitcomb4470 8 лет назад +2

      The speed was matched to theof the sound source and there were dozens of clips used. If you don't know what you are talking about you should not comment. Of the thousands of people who have purchased and watch this video you are the only one to think it could be done better.

    • @struck2soon
      @struck2soon 8 лет назад +3

      +Charles Whitcomb , I certainly DO know what I am talking about when it comes to steam locomotives. You on the other hand obviously don't, otherwise you would agree with me. Otto Perry would turn in his grave if he could see what a mess was made of dubbing his good footage. Try watching it with your ears open!

    • @TakeMeToChurchill
      @TakeMeToChurchill 8 лет назад +2
